make a difference in the lives of area seniors, their families, and caregivers and we’ll be focusing on five key areas where our needs are most pressing:

JABA Long-Term Care Ombudsman Volunteer Seniors living in nursing homes, assisted living, or receiving home care often have no one who’ll stand up for their rights. Our Ombudsman volunteers serve as powerful advocates for seniors and their families. If you’re a good listener, and can be assertive while being patient, we want to hear from you. JABA Neighbor-to-Neighbor Volunteer It can be lonely and isolating for seniors living at home with no family close by or the means to get around like they used to. Neighbor-to-Neighbor volunteers provide friendly visits, transportation, or home assistance to give seniors the support they need to live safely at home and maintain their independence. Volunteering at one of JABA’s Community Senior Centers With Centers in Charlottesville, Nelson, Greene, Louisa, Fluvanna, Esmont and Scottsville, there’s sure to be one near you. You’ll bring joy to the lives of our members — and into your own life — by leading and participating in activities involving the arts, crafts, games, music, exercise, and more. JABA Insurance Counseling Volunteer Navigating the complexities of health coverage can be overwhelming for seniors. Our volunteers help guide them through the process. With Open Enrollment for Medicare fast approaching, the need for counselors is urgent. We’ll also need support staff and data entry volunteers. Your help will have a huge impact on seniors seeking quality health coverage. FISH Volunteer FISH stands for Friends in Schools Helping, and it’s an intergenerational program that matches up an adult with a child in our local school system to serve as a school-based mentor. You’ll help boost the confidence of a child by helping them succeed in school. This is a very rewarding experience, and you don’t need a background in education to participate. Annual Fall Block Party Celebrates the Region’s Innovators, Entrepreneurs, and Artists Tom Tom Founders Festival announced the 5th annual Tomtoberfest, a yearly fall block party that will take place in Lee Park on September 23rd and 24th. tourists, today that is just one strategy for bringing visitors to the county according to Maureen Kelley, Director of the Nelson County Visitor Information Center. She explained that the county had moved from being one that is “ski-centric” to one that offers year round activities. “We are no longer reliant on mother nature to keep visitors coming,” she said. Hess agrees stating that in years past, skiing was “the economic driver” for the county. However, that could mean if it wasn’t a great year for snow sports, visitors would stay home or go elsewhere. More and more, though, Nelson is becoming known for its wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries drawing people from as far away as Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Other Nelson County activities that brings out visitors and residents alike are the annual and popular music festivals. In 2016 the Lockn’ Music Festival will return to Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington August 25–28. This annual outdoor, four-day event attracts lots of visitors with over 70 percent coming from out of state Kelley said. Festy, another popular outdoor music festival, enjoyed five years at Devils Backbone Brewery, but this year will be in its new location at Nelson County Preserve August 7–9. Another local favorite is the annual Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy featuring a wide range of

music and performers throughout much of July and continuing into the first week of August.

Nelson’s Real Estate Market San Giorgio described the current real estate market in Nelson as “busy” and one that has “absolutely” recovered quite a lot since the economic downturn of several years back. In fact she described 2015 as the best she has experienced in the last fifteen years. Marlo Allen, Associate Broker with Mountain Area Realty in Nellysford, is a native of Nelson County and passionate about helping people buy and sell homes there. She described the Nelson market as one that is “stabilizing.” Buyers can still find some good deals, and “properties that are priced appropriately are selling well.” Chase also saw a big increase in sales in 2015. Sales in Wintergreen declined in 2014 after the owner announced the resort was for sale. However, they were up 20 percent in 2015 after new owners acquired it ending the uncertainty he explained. In spite of the increase in sales in 2015, median and average values are still down, Chase said indicating that the current market there still very much favors buyers. CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

ou could start at Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton and sample a Classic Lager, then head eleven miles up the road to Wild Wolf Brewing Company in Nellysford, for an Alpha Ale. From there it’s just three miles to Devils Backbone Brewing Company, where their Eight Point IPA is named for the eight point bucks in the woods near the brew master’s house. Now you’re less than three miles from Blue Mountain Barrel House, where on the first Sunday evening of the month the thirsty gather for “Beer and Hymns,” or “singing and chatting over a pint.” Twenty-two more rural miles will take you to Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet, winner of twenty-one tasting competition medals. Follow Route 240 to 250 about six miles into downtown Charlottesville and finish your trip at South Street Brewery, the city’s longest-running brewpub.

In the early 21st century that urge to learn is upon us again. It helps that the water flowing down the Blue Ridge Mountains is perfect for the task, not too hard and with just the right mineral content so that brew masters can do their thing in any style they want. As the craft beer business has bonded to the Eat Local movement and “a beer” has come to connote, say, a Grateful Pale from Starr Hill as much as a PBR from far-off Milwaukee, creative types not dreaming up apps have been dreaming up recipes and flavor profiles, mixing Old World techniques with New World imagination. Virginia—once the “Hop Capital of the World”—has been nurturing the careers of a whole new generation of ambitious brewers. Mark Thompson is one example. The Starr Hill brew master was born and raised here, graduating from Western Albemarle High School and studying biology at James Madison University before taking his first professional brewing job In Portland,

The road you’d be traveling is dubbed the Brew Ridge Trail, a scenic route through Nelson and Albemarle counties and into town from one craft brewery to another, with sample flights and full beers available along the way. Even your designated driver could have just one. American beer making is as old as America. George Washington brewed his own at Mount Vernon with hops, yeast and molasses and Thomas Jefferson, wine lover though he was, planted hops in his garden at Monticello in 1794. In 1813, with the help of an Englishman stuck here during the War of 1812, he actually began brewing. James Madison, contrary to Internet rumor, did not propose a national brewery and a cabinet position for a Secretary of Beer. But Jefferson did invite Madison to send someone to Monticello’s fall brewing in 1820, the better to make the stuff at Montpelier.

Oregon (where small-batch brewing in America first took off again) in 1992. When the building on Charlottesville’s West Main Street that had housed Blue Ridge Brewing Company, the state’s first craft brewing company, became available in 1999, “two and two made five,” and he bought it. Still named for that West Main neighborhood where it was born, Starr Hill has been out in Crozet since 2005. Producing 28,000 barrels a year, it’s now the largest brewery in the Commonwealth. Offering, as it does, two dozen or so varieties of beer, ale, stout and more, it’s still one of the little guys at heart, subject to flights of fancy that turn into flights of Sublime Citrus Wit, Habanero King of Hop, and Barrel Aged Tripel. Thompson thinks the opening of Blue Mountain Brewery Company in Nelson County in 2007 is what really

renewed local interest in craft beer. Today its twelve ales and lagers—10,000 barrels’ worth—are brewed, bottled, canned and kegged at its original site in Afton and down the road in Arrington at its new Blue Mountain Barrel House. Blue Mountain’s two hop fields in Afton and Arrington grow 1,000 hills of Cascade variety hops for its Full Nelson strong pale ale, along with its seasonal and harvest beer offerings. Every August it holds a Community Hop Harvest, including a free lunch to volunteer pickers. Blue Mountain’s Afton facility doubles as a full-service restaurant. Its drink selections include not only 8-10 Blue Mountain beers on draft, but local wine, cider and kombucha as well. Like Blue Mountain, Devils Backbone owns two sites. Their Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows outside Roseland sits on 100 acres surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers outdoor activities including bike races, trail run races, and festivals as well as beer and pub fare. Their Outpost Brewery and Taproom, on a hillside outside of Lexington, houses a custom built brewery plus a Tap Room serving pints and sampler flights, and a bier garten open to picnickers. Mother and son team Mary and Danny Wolf opened Wild Wolf Brewing Company in 2011 in an old high school building in Nellysford, serving three core beers plus seasonal offerings. Today they’re up to six core beers and thirteen seasonal brews, tripling their initial production output. Their menu runs from Bavarian style sourdough pretzels and calamari to burgers and Korean barbeque tacos, and they pride themselves on their Farm to Fork initiative, obtaining all their meat within a thirty mile radius. South Street Brewery, now owned by the folks at Blue Mountain, occupies a warehouse dating back to the late 19th century, where it brews 650 barrels a year and serves twelve different brews, including its ever popular Satan’s Pony Amber Ale. Complementing the beers and beer samplers is a menu that leans heavily on locally sourced ingredients. Like the nearby wineries, that in many cases preceded them and remain popular, the breweries and brewpubs up and down the Brew Ridge Trail have become social hotspots, reliable places to find good bands and tempting food trucks, to hold a wedding reception, or just a good conversation. They’re innovative and intriguing. They’re the best of Central Virginia. n
