With its enchanting Tchaikovsky score, evil Mouse King, gracious Sugar Plum Fairy, and magical journey through Lands of Snowflake and Sweets, The Nutcracker has become a Christmastime tradition for generations of families. Based on the original 1892 choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, but given a Regency Era setting and updated by company members, this production features twelve professional dancers, nine trainees, and

more than one hundred student performers. A special Class with Clara (the ballet’s child heroine), will follow four of the performances. The company will also host a Nutcracker Suite Meet and Greet dance class for boys and girls ages 3-10 at the Central Branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library on December 6 at 4:00 p.m. Nutcracker season “is one of the most magical times of the year,” says Charlottesville Ballet’s Nina Staeben, “the time when kids are first introduced to ballet. It might be the first show or theater experience for many of

them, so it’s really amazing seeing their reactions. Their faces are so in awe of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and they want to run up and touch the costumes and meet the ballerina. It’s just so special to see that excitement.” Virginia Gingerbread Christmas A pancake breakfast, a party with Mrs. Claus, and a gallery full of gingerbread houses—Virginia Gingerbread Christmas has been a Charlottesville tradition since 1994, a gift to the community first conceived of by former Sage Moon Gallery owner Morgan Perkins in partnership with Downtown Business Association and Charlottesville Parking Garage. When Perkins felt the need to step back last year, says Rita Ralston of Ronald McDonald House in Charlottesville, “that left a real hole in memory-making for children, so we asked if they would be so kind as to let us take it over.”

Five thousand visitors saw the 32 gingerbread houses at the Omni Hotel last year. “They were all wonderful in their own way,” Ralston says, with “so much creativity. One woman actually built the home that her parents have in the Midwest. It even had sugar windows. We had kids who did Minecraft. A Girl Scout troop did their annual camp with a cottage and a campfire.” This year’s theme is Christmas Memories. Houses will be on display Sunday, December 4 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 5 and Tuesday, December 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Wednesday, December 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Winners will be named in seven different amateur and professional categories. “Two fun-filled hours making Christmas memories” is how Ralston describes the singing, dancing, storytelling, craft-making and cupcake decorating called Mrs. Claus Invites, on Wednesday, December 14 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Omni Hotel. This ticketed event will benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Santa himself will be first in line for the pancake breakfast at Charlottesville’s Hilton Garden Inn on Saturday, December 10. Breakfast proceeds will help the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville and other local agencies that serve children in the community. The Grand Illumination The Grand Illumination is what the City of Charlottesville calls its annual tree lighting ceremony and attendant festivities in Central Place on the Downtown Mall. This year’s evening-long event takes place on Friday, December 2 beginning at 5:00 p.m., and it’s all free.

From 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. the Paramount Theater will host Community Cares and Crafts, featuring free crafts and face painting, plus concessions and photo opps with Mrs. Claus and Friends. Toy Lift Charities will exchange a raffle ticket for every donated toy. Representatives of local nonprofits will offer information about their work. Local musical talent including the Virginia Gentlemen, the Virginia Consort Carolers, Live Arts Players, DMR Adventures, Mosaic Children’s Choir, and Wilson School of Dance will take the stage at Central Place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Santa and Friends will help countdown to the Grand Illumination itself at 7:30 p.m. Immediately following the tree lighting ceremony, the Paramount Theater will show the 2003 Christmas comedy Elf, starring Will Ferrell. Then on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., the Downtown Business Asso-

ciation of Charlottesville will hold its Holiday Heritage Parade, celebrating national and community history and culture with marching bands, floats, living history performers and more. That same day from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., McGuffey Art Center will hold a Holiday Open House, with live music, food available from vendors on the lawn, and the chance to be creative alongside McGuffey’s own artists. Messiah Sing-In The Messiah Sing-In has been a University Of Virginia tradition for over 40 years now. This year’s Sing-In on Tuesday, December 6 at 8:00 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall is open to any and all singers from the University and the Charlottesville communities who love George Frideric Handel’s glorious Christmas oratorio. An Artificial Tree or a Real One? That is the question. Artificial trees have the advantage of symmetry, convenience, and always being the right size. They can be used year after year, don’t need water or drop needles, and can make a difference to people with allergies. On the other hand, artificial trees are generally made from metal and petroleum-based plastics and some even contain lead. This means they are non-recyclable and non-biodegradable. Also as many as 85 percent of the trees are imported from China and many people are concerned about conditions for workers there. The trees must also travel a long distance. Nielsen Research, on behalf of the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA), surveyed nearly 30,000 households and estimates about 21.6 million real trees and 12.9 million artificial trees will be purchased this year. ACTA points out most live trees are raised on tree farms—there are some 15,000 in the country—where they are grown like other crops. Nationally about 350,000 acres are used to raise the millions of trees which consume carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Still, they are agricultural products, which usually means annual applications of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. The bottom line is that both natural and fake trees have an environmental impact, although if they are artificial it may be slightly higher. The more years an artificial tree is used, of course, the lower the impact.

In many neighborhoods Boy Scouts, or other organizations, collect natural trees to recycle or compost. One family simply takes their tree outdoors to provide shelter for their birdfeeder then lops off the branches for mulch in the spring. The tree trunk is cut up for the fireplace and the largest piece becomes the Yule Log to burn the following Christmas Eve. There’s a third option: a living tree. Because of weight, these trees in containers of soil are necessarily small, but can be planted outdoors to enhance the yard. However, it’s essential to remember conifers are dormant in winter and indoor warmth may confuse them into starting to grow. In this case, they seldom thrive when replanted in the cold outdoors. Ideally, living trees should not be inside more than a week before planting them according to your nursery’s directions...and remember to mulch thoroughly. The bottom line, of course, is real, artificial, or living is a personal choice.

Lights! Lights! Lights! Be sure to consider LED lights which use 80 to 90 percent less energy than in-

candescent bulbs, don’t break, and come in vibrant colors. LEDs cost about three times as much as incandescents, but they last considerably longer. People who don’t celebrate Christmas, yet want their homes to be festive and lighted, might opt for an LED candle-style light in each window, so very appropriate with Virginia’s Colonial tradition.

Wreaths, Garlands, Ornaments You can purchase wreaths many places, including Charlottesville’s Holiday City Market, open every Saturday from November 26th through December 17th. You can make your own by purchasing a framework or forming your own from coat hangers or other sturdy wire. Some people enjoy creating their wreaths annually from fresh greens, while others prefer a permanent wreath to use year after year. Wreath-building materials are endless. Use evergreen sprigs from your yard as well as bits of ivy, holly, cedar, or magnolia and punctuate with pinecones, seedpods, bittersweet, or berries. Permanent wreaths can be crafted from sea shells gathered on vacation, ribbons, dried vines, small no-longer-used toys, candy, egg cartons, feathers, fruit, or more.

Garlands can be made from the same materials as wreaths. Set the youngsters to stringing cranberries or popcorn. (Make the popcorn the day before since it’s less likely to shatter when it’s a bit stale.) The Internet has hundreds (maybe thousands?) of ideas for holiday crafts employing recycled items. For example, the bottoms of plastic bottles often have interesting shapes to convert into ornaments and plastic milk cartons can be cut into leaves or other festive shapes. Get out the tin snips and turn the ends of cans into shiny stars or snowflakes. Never underestimate the decorating power of children with colored paper, cotton balls, and glue. They always enjoy making paper chains from construction paper or the colored foil wraps florists use on potted plants.

Always be Safe Unfortunately, the holidays are prime times for house fires. For example, fireplaces whose chimneys aren’t cleaned regularly can be a hazard. Fresh live trees are less likely to catch fire, so avoid any tree which is already shedding needles. Natural trees suck up a lot of water, so check the tree base every day to be sure it is still full of water. Keep the tree away from fireplaces, candles, and heat vents. Be sure all lights have the UL lab-approved label. While you can use outdoor lights inside, never use indoor lights outdoors. And turn off inside lights when you leave home or go to bed. Keep candles on trays or plates to protect furniture. Keep them away from walls, greenery, and things above them like lampshades, draperies or holiday decorations. By pursuing a “green” strategy this year, your holidays can be both happy and eco-friendly. n
