The Live Arts intimate Founders Theater will be the venue for their April-May offering of Will Eno’s THE REALISTIC JONESES, a multiple Drama Desk award- winning play. In a quiet yet compelling story, Eno explores themes of creating community and confronting our own mortality with wry humor and gentle clarity. Bree Luck, Interim Managing Artistic Director at Live Arts, is excited by the finesse and resonance of the show’s script. “Will Eno is a master of contemporary dialogue, and THE REALISTIC JONESES is a sterling example of his genius,” she said. “His absurd exploration of the intertwined lives of two couples is a witty, slightly disturbing and thoroughly entertaining look at mortality and love.” Fran Smith, one of Live Arts’ founding members, is directing the production, and Sarah Cain is the producer. “We’re excited to have such dynamic actors working to bring out the sorrow and joy of Eno’s script, while our talented team of design artists is hard at work creating the world in which the words can come to life,” noted Cain. Of the Live Arts production, Luck observed, “I was lucky enough to sit in on a rehearsal recently, and it was a real treat to watch these utterly quirky, yet

“Gardens above all else are for sharing”

ould any gardener beg to differ? Emily Whaley knows: after all the planning and the plotting, and the digging and mulching and watering and tending have done their work comes a garden’s finest hour, when gardener and friends stroll through, approving and admiring, snipping and sniffing . . . and plotting and planning already for next season. And so the cycle begins again. “I think what I enjoy most about Historic Garden Week and what I tend to count as among my favorite memories,” says Christina Teague of Albemarle Garden Club, “is when I’m at a property and it gives me a vision for landscaping in a totally different way. It’s great for getting ideas.” Fellow club member Shelah Scott agrees. “My favorite part is seeing how other peo-

ple have organized and designed and maintained their gardens,” she says. “You get a sense of how each person feels about flowers or vegetables or all kinds of different things. There’s an enormous variety and you always learn something. You get ideas.”

For 90 years now, the non-profit Garden Club of Virginia and its 47 member clubs have been giving people ideas—and giving them joy. Since its first Historic Garden Week in 1927, which raised $7,000 ($98,000 in today’s dollars) to save trees planted by

Fox Ridge boxwood parterre Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, Historic Garden Week has helped fund the restoration and preservation of nearly 50 public gardens around Virginia, including at Mount Vernon, the Pavilion Gardens at the University of Virginia, and the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library. Each spring, for most of its 90 years, it has opened privately held gardens and estates to let the general public share their delights. Statewide, nearly 200 private homes and gardens will be open for viewing on 30 tours during the 84th Historic Garden Week, April 22 through 29, in what has been dubbed “America’s Largest Open House.” Garden Club of Virginia volunteers will create over 2,000 spectacular floral arrangements to decorate the rooms, mostly with flowers from their very own gardens. Here in Central Virginia, from Saturday, April 22 through Monday, April 24, Albemarle Garden Club, Charlottesville Garden Club and Rivanna Garden Club will host the local events, featuring five

Choill Mhor front walk and irises all directions, and are surrounded by woods, except to the South, where the Blue Ridge Mountains may be seen in the distance. Footpaths through the woods and around the house are dotted with whimsical statuary and water features. Complimentary refreshments will be served at the pool house between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Built in 2005, Choill Mhor (“great woods” in Gaelic and pronounced “Kyle More”) is an English Country Manor home set on 50 acres with gardens and numerous original and newly planted native trees. Perennial gardens containing peonies, baptisia, brunnera, leucanthemum, nepet, calamintha, and hydranga are of traditional boxwood parterre design. Thousands of daffodils, narcissus and camissia dot the landscape. An old oak tree shelters a shade garden with ferns, spring ephemerals, and many varieties of Bleeding Hearts, and a pollinator garden which blooms in summer. The farmhouse at Midway dates back to the early 19th century, sits on land originally part of a 715-acre land grant from King George II, and was once at the center of a prosperous hemp, flax and tobacco plantation. The house is dominated by a long two-story gallery, has Flemish-bond brickwork on the east wing facade, mouse-tooth cornices, and stepped parapets with corbeled shoulders. The formal garden was laid out in 1936 based on a design

by Charles Gillette, and is planted, in accordance with Gillette’s plans, with roses in a color spectrum ranging from pale to intensely saturated. Custom built in 2007, the Georgian-influenced Laing House has grey-painted bricks and a shake shingle roof, and overlooks the Moorman’s River, with extensive western views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Inside are Asian antique furnishings and objets d’art alongside the owner’s own Oriental brushwork paintings. Outside, informal gardens with daffodils, tulips, lilies and crocus surround the house. Bushes and trees include boxwood, azaleas, Japanese maples and a double-blossom dogwood. Many of the property’s 30 acres are wooded. Set on 280 acres with extensive Blue Ridge Mountain views, Fox Ridge is an active equestrian farm, with cross-country horse jumps, a Hunter riding ring, and a 20-stall working barn with close to a dozen horses in residence. Its slate-roofed Neo-Georgian red brick home was built in 1945 and remodeled in 2015. The central portion of Quaker Cottage is a log cabin dating back to the 1800s. Next to the cottage is a small cemetery with two graves from 1797, nine unmarked graves, and a Williamsburg-inspired garden. Gardens on the property include a boxwood parterre garden, a vegetable garden, and a boxwood allee Midway infinity pool and conservatory view

Garden Club of Virginia hired Colonial Williamsburg landscape architects Alden Hopkins and Donald Parker to design the Colonial Revival gardens. Work in the gardens continues to be supported by the Garden Club of Virginia. Tours of the gardens, conducted at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., start at the steps of the Rotunda facing the Lawn. Restoration and Preservation All this activity is nothing new, as Mary Pollock can tell you. Pollock’s mother Elizabeth Weedon was a member of Albemarle Garden Club for 50 years. Pollock joined in 1991, after returning from New York City, and was quickly appointed historian. Pollock can tell you the Club was formed in 1913, that the Regional Summer Flower Show at Farmington in 1927 may have been a precursor to Historic Garden Week, and that in the same year club member Mrs. William R. Massie established a medal “to be given each year to the member or Club accomplishing the most outstanding work in the protection, restoration or preservation of the natural beauties of our Commonwealth.” While the tours enchant the public each spring, the garden clubs do so much more. “The three tenets of the Albemarle Garden Club are conservation, horticulture and floral shows and Views from Laing House

“I

can’t believe we’ve already had the AC on and it’s only April,” laments a Lake Monticello resident. “I don’t even want to think about our electric bill this summer.” She’s not alone. Air conditioning soaks up about five percent of all the electricity produced in our country, approaching $30 billion annually. Fortunately there are tactics to lower bills, some are free, and many are not expensive.

Fans Of course, you can leave cute little personal hand fans around and gently waft air currents on yourself like a preAC Southern belle. A better way to cool things is to increase the “wind chill” in your home by using ceiling fans. This may take an investment, but even at such a low setting you hardly notice a fan is on, you can raise your thermostat three to four degrees and still be comfortable. Ceiling fans come in many styles these days, from Victorian to modern. Actually any sort of fan that circulates air will serve, but be sure to place them away from high traffic areas, young children or pets.

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

Running a whole-house fan in the evening or early morning on days when the outdoor temperature is lower can bring in cooler, fresh air and expel hot air from the attic.

AC Tips In summer, air conditioning can account for as much as 45 percent of your energy bill. (Compare your energy costs in April and August and you’ll see what a big difference the season can make.) Here are some proven ways to save on your power bill. If your unit is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it with a new ENERGY STAR® energy-efficient sys-

Keep Your

COOL This Summer

and drapes. If your budget allows, purchase insulated “honeycomb” blinds, which work year round keeping heat in during the winter and out in the summer. These are a bit expensive, but you might be able to supply one room at a time with insulating blinds until your house—especially the sunny side—is completely furnished. A more ambitious scheme that can add considerable appeal to a home is framing windows with trellises supporting deciduous vines blocking the sun in the summer but admitting the sun in winter. Awnings to shade windows have a nostalgic charm. Newer schemes such as solar screens and films can also reduce the sun’s heat through windows. A thrifty alternative is roll-up sun blockers, such as bamboo screens, which can be deployed during the time the sun is most direct on windows.

Keep The Heat Down. Don’t heat things up from the inside. Avoid using the oven during the heat of the day and remember that microwaves use less energy and produce much less heat. Even better: a chilled summer meal of salad and sandwiches or grilling outside. And there’s always take-out food.

BY MARILYN PRIBUS

tem. This could greatly reduce your energy consumption. Eyeball your ductwork, particularly checking seams for dirt streaks which often indicate air leaks. Seal them with duct mastic. There are less expensive tactics as well such a changing your unit’s air filter regularly. A clean filter can save as much at 15 percent of electric usage of your AC unit compared to a clogged filter. It’s not a good idea to reuse disposable filters because simply vacuuming a filter can compromise its efficiency. A better idea might be to buy one of the reusable filters on the market. These save money in the long run and you’ll never be caught without one. Be sure your air registers aren’t blocked by furniture or other items. Set your thermostat at 78 or higher. This uses the least amount of energy while keeping humidity low. For every degree below 78, you increase your energy usage by three to four percent. Turn the AC off if you’re leaving for an hour or more. It’s a myth that leaving the AC on low uses less energy than cooling down a space that has gained heat in your absence. Setting the ther-

mostat lower when you return doesn’t cool things any faster, either. Shade your AC. If your unit is in the sun, provide some sort of roof, awning, or trellis to create shade. Be certain you have adequate clearance so the shading device doesn’t interfere with air flow around the unit.

Made In The Shade While shading your AC unit can help keep things cool, shading the house itself can pay bigger dividends. Trees to shade the roof are a wonderful benefit, especially deciduous trees that block the sun in the summer, but let it warm your home during cold weather. If you don’t have trees now, plant some that will shade your exterior as they grow. Check with a nursery or Virginia’s extension service at www. ext.vt.edu for recommendations on the type of trees to choose and how to place them where they will not interfere with water lines, driveways, or your home’s foundation. Employ radiant barriers to block both direct rays from the sun and high summer temperatures. The least expensive barriers are window blinds

Lighting can produce considerable heat, especially with old incandescent bulbs where as little as 10 – 15 percent of the electricity actually produces light with the rest being released as heat. Computers, washing machines and dishwashers, hair dryers, clothes dryers, and TV sets all generate heat. Reduce their usage, especially during the heat of the day. n Marilyn Pribus and her husband live in Albemarle County and have several ceiling fans in their home. When they added a screened porch, they included another ceiling fan for comfort.

For every degree below 78 you set your thermostat, you increase your energy usage by three to four percent.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE: THE REALISTIC JONESES will open on April 21 and run through May 13, 2017, with performances on: • April 21,22, 26, 28, 29 and May 3,5,6,10,12 and 13 at 8 p.m. • April 27 and May 4 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. • April 30 and May 7 at 2 p.m.

Hope’s Legacy mascot, Donkey, music from Second Draw, the Cote-Rotie and Mobilee Delicious food trucks, face painting, stick horse races, horse shoe painting, vendors, a raffle and more! Help a Horse Day is an ASPCA® event giving local horse rescues the opportunity to compete for prize money and build community awareness of the lifesaving work they do year round. The funds raised and potential prize money will directly benefit the horses and donkeys in Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue’s care. None of the funds raised at Hope’s Legacy’s Spring Festival go to the ASPCA® or other organizations. “This will be our first year competing in the Help a Horse event. The more people who attend our Spring Festival and the greater the number of new volunteers and funds we raise, the better the chance we have of winning one of the prizes from the ASPCA®. Those funds will allow us to help even more horses this year,” said Maya Proulx, Executive Director of Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue. When you attend a Hope’s Legacy event, donate, or volunteer, you help horses like Gentleman. Gentleman was found on a farm in Orange County, Virginia with 101 other starving and neglected horses. There were multiple dead horses on the property and many of the remaining horses were too far gone to survive. Through the hard work of every volunteer, donor and sponsor of Hope’s Legacy, Gentleman survived and has become a favorite of everyone who meets him. Gentleman is proof of the good work that Hope’s Legacy does. He likely would not have survived without Hope’s Legacy’s intervention.
