NEWS & VIEWS Real Estate Related News & Events Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® Endorses Lowry, O’Brien, and Martin The Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® (CAAR) formally endorsed three candidates for Boards of Supervisors in Albemarle, Fluvanna and Greene County. The endorsement comes after candidate interviews and deliberations by both the Candidate Funding Project Team and the CAAR Board of Directors. Albemarle County’s Samuel Miller District challenger, John Lowry, was singled out for his efforts to move forward a balanced approach to government and vision for economic development. As a retired finance professional, his fiscal acumen will assist as Albemarle seeks innovative ways to fund government services. Lowry’s significant service to the community on the Economic Development Authority, Board of Equalization and Airports Authority were also factors in CAAR’s endorsement. Fluvanna County’s Rivanna District Supervisor, Tony O’Brien, was seen by the REALTORS® as an important voice in that community’s water supply discussion. In addition, O’Brien’s dedication to economic growth, dedication to agribusiness and his desire to diversify Fluvanna’s tax revenue streams were key factors in CAAR’s endorsement. Incumbent Greene County Supervisor, Bill Martin, impressed the REALTORS® with his understanding of local government and steadfast support for infrastructure projects. Martin’s openness regarding challenges to funding and implementing the community water supply plan and how that plan impacts Greene County’s future were important discussion points in the REALTOR® endorsement. CAAR Announces Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) Specially Adapted Home for Marine Corporal Kevin Blanchard Now Ready for Move-In CAAR is happy to announce that Marine Corporal Kevin Blanchard’s
specially adapted house in Crozet is ready for move in and was celebrated at a recent ceremony featuring CAAR President Anthony McGhee as one of the speakers. Corporal Blanchard was part of the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, in northwest Iraq in 2005. During a patrol, the vehicle Corporal Blanchard and four other Marines were in was hit by an improvised explosive device. Corporal Blanchard was the most severely injured compared to the other Marines in the vehicle, and lost his left leg and sustained severe damage to his right. His new home features more than 40 major special adaptations such as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered countertops. “The Virginia REALTORS® is in its third year of sponsoring Homes For Our Troops. Our members have given over $115,000 since 2015. Every Virginia REALTOR® is invited to strengthen this legacy. What’s Happening in Town? Women United to Award $50,000 to Local Non-Profits On Thursday, October 5 Women United will award $50,000 in grants, $25,000 each to two non-profits, at their 2017 Human Services Grant Award Luncheon at Farmington Country Club.
Including these grants, Women United has awarded almost $500,000 to local organizations serving women and children in the greater Charlottesville/Albemarle area. Women United is a collective giving organization, and all its grants are funded through membership. The luncheon keynote speaker will be Carolyn Miles, President and CEO of Save the Children and a graduate of the Darden School of Business. “We are very excited to welcome Ms. Miles as our keynote speaker,” said Kim Martin, Women United’s Steering Committee Chair. “Her organization has a similar mission to Women United, in that they want to give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. They work globally. We work locally.” Tickets for the luncheon are available now to the general public.
