Both new board members have a special interest in homeownership and desire to spread the word about opportunities for underserved groups in Charlottesville and beyond. Meet Geraldina Gonzalez Geraldina Gonzalez first encountered Piedmont Housing Alliance (Piedmont Housing) as a first-time homebuyer in 2017. She said she first heard about Piedmont Housing when she was in the process of buying a home and her mortgage lender referred her. Ms. Gonzalez attended Piedmont Housing homebuyer classes. She also used our down payment assistance and low-interest mortgage allocation through the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) to purchase a home in Charlottesville’s Orangedale neighborhood. She currently works full time as a server at Hamiltons’ and also works at Feast. She said, “As an immigrant we come to this country for opportunities that in our country are impossible. They add that “contrary to many forms of hunting, American fox hunters undertake stewardship of the land, and endeavor to maintain fox populations and habitats.” Recently the Club underwent a “massive renovation,” Merrick says, which improved it while still keeping the charm of the original structure. Changes include an HVAC system and a much-updated kitchen and baths. In addition, the hounds now enjoy all new kennels, which are “just beautiful,” she says. The project was initiated by “the generosity of a small group,” Matheson notes, “but received close to 100 percent participation by Hunt Club members.” They were rewarded by “a sensational response” to the renovations during the annual Keswick Horse show in May, he adds. Proceeds from this Club sponsored event go to support local charities. The Club is also available for rental for other kinds of events. “While the horse world remains the backbone of Keswick,” many participants and Hunt Club members are not

riders at all, but they pitch in and work together with those that are, Matheson says. At the 2019 Keswick Horse Show he observed all manner of Keswick residents volunteering at the food booth, “working side by side flipping burgers.” Another Keswick icon is the Grace Episcopal Church where fox hunters gather every Thanksgiving for the blessing of the hounds, the oldest ceremony of its kind in this country, and part of the fox hunting tradition. This year it too benefitted from a renovation, which was motivated by damage to the pipe organ. Sunday worshipers have been meeting in the parish hall until the work is completed, Merrick says. When it is finished it will be beautiful, she adds, stating it will be a place for concerts and other events that will be open to the public.
