Heyer Voices, the Power of Youth United and Unleashed Heather Heyer’s mother, Susan Bro, recently announced the creation of a new program called Heyer Voices (Heyer was killed during the events of August 2017 in Charlottesville). Bro says this initiative will support area high school juniors and seniors in their pursuit of social justice and unity in two ways: 1. By cultivating self-awareness, empowerment, and skillfulness to change the world from “the inside out.” 2. By providing support for youth to develop and implement innovative projects using non-violent direct-action. Heyer Voices represents a partnership between two local Charlottesville nonprofits with intersecting missions: the Heather Heyer Foundation (heatherheyerfoundation.com) and The Sum (thesum.org). Bro, who is president of the Heather Heyer Foundation says, “My child will not be silenced, and Heyer Voices is one more way to ensure her voice lives and grows through the voices of our communities’ young people. I’ve said before that if I had to give Heather up, we were going to make it count.” Elliott Cisneros, Executive Director of The Sum, says those accepted into Heyer Voices will participate in a workshop on August 16 and 17. The workshop will culminate with the development of non-violent, direct-action projects. These projects will be implemented over the fall semester through monthly Saturday meetings. A final day of learning, celebration, and future envisioning will convene in December.
Critical Dates: • Parent/applicant information meetings: Thursday, August 1 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, August 3, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (RSVP is requested). • Applications due by Tuesday August 6. All meetings/workshops will be held at the combined offices of the Heather Heyer Foundation and The Sum: 914 E. Jefferson St., Suite G4, Charlottesville, VA 22902. The program is limited to 12 participants. To apply, high school juniors and seniors need to submit an application online: heyervoices.org or complete one at an information meeting. For more details: email info@heyervoices.org or call 434-282-1377. The Heather Heyer Foundation “was created to honor Heather Heyer, a young civil rights activist who dedicated her life to promoting equal rights for all people. The foundation has established a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to individuals passionate about social change.” Susan Bro, Heyer’s mother, serves as the foundation’s president and Alfred Wilson, Heyer’s former supervisor with Murry Law Group, PC, serves as the organization’s executive director. The Sum provides “workshops, assessment, and coaching to cultivate and empower internal tools for personal and organizational effectiveness across race and other differences.” The Sum’s Executive Director, J. Elliott Cisneros, formerly directed the Human Rights Office for the City of Fort Collins, CO, taught social justice classes at Naropa University in Boulder, CO, and was a school principal. He moved to Charlottesville after the events of August, 2017.
Live Arts Announces Leadership Change Today the Live Arts Board of Directors announced the resignation of Bree Luck as Producing Artistic Director. Luck has enriched Live Arts’ reputation and mission to produce engaging, relevant theater with heart. At Live Arts, she has directed eight productions, provided hundreds of artists and volunteers the opportunity to have a voice and overseen sold-out subscription seasons.
While the board considers this time of transition, it is delighted to announce 6-month interim appointments of Barbara Kessler as Executive Director and Jeremy Duncan Pape as Artistic Director. Kessler has been a dedicated member of the Live Arts community for many years and has experience with nonprofit board leadership, human resources management, and workforce development programs at PVCC, SNL Financial, and UVA. Kessler will take a leave of absence from the Live Arts board during her appointment. Pape comes with over 20 years’ experience at Live Arts and beyond. With a BFA from the University of the Arts and his MFA from The New School. Pape worked in New York City as a director, technical director, and production manager for Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, The Amoralists, as associate artistic director at End Times Productions, and the founding artistic director of No-Win Productions. For the last 18 months, Pape has been an extraordinary technical director, working with dedicated volunteers to bring all Live Arts’ productions in on time and under budget. “We thank Bree for her compassion and thoughtfulness she demonstrated throughout her tenure. She leaves Live Arts stronger and more cohesive to engage a broader community. With Barbara and Jeremy, Live Arts will continue its mission of forging community and theater” commented Live Arts President, Cameron Mowat, on the announcement.
St. Anne’s-Belfield School Summer ELL Program Brought 16 International Teens to Charlottesville Sixteen students from China and Georgia participated in this year’s St. Anne’s-Belfield School English Language Learner (ELL) Summer Program, which ran throughout the month of July. “It is amazing the connections that can be built during a three-week
program,” said Antxon Iturbe, the School’s director of residential life and summer ELL. “The students come with open minds and we expose them to a wide array of experiences. The goal of the camp is to have campers do as many things for the first time as possible. We consider every space we visit a classroom.” This year campers studied topics in humanities, photography, and computer science in addition to taking part in daily group activities. Trips to Richmond and Washington, D.C. allowed students to see more of the area while local favorites like touring the Fralin Museum, taking part in the Carter Mountain Sunset Series, and painting the Beta Bridge introduced them to Charlottesville. “Whether it is trying new food, having a discussion in English, touring Washington D.C., or playing hideand-seek in the dark in Randolph Hall, the camp is designed to expand their horizons and create lasting memories,” said Iturbe. St. Anne’s-Belfield School is a co-educational preschool through grade twelve day school of nearly 900 students and more than 150 faculty and staff, with a boarding program in grades nine through twelve. Fifteen countries are represented in the student body, with 40 percent of students receiving financial aid. More information may be found at www.stab.org. n

Theater Roundup: What’s on Stage Near You?
FEATURE
BY KEN WILSON
CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM
A
gatha Christie and a team of former showgirls rescue a one-armed Civil War captain pursued by a tiger on the loose from a Louisiana beauty salon. A plucky thirteen-year-old girl dispenses advice to Julius Caesar in a song-anddance show staged in her family’s garage, and wilder and wilder till dawn. A theatergoer’s dreams are a tangle of perplexing plots right now, to be unraveled and resolved when the lights dim and the curtains rise on a murder mystery, a Shakespeare tragedy, a children’s musical, and the 3-D, full color rest of the 2019-20 theater season. On the boards or “in situ,” scripted or on the fly, theater in Central Virginia is alive and (high)kicking, thanks to talented actors, abundant volunteers, and appreciative and supportive communities.
Four County Players Founded by a small group of people in 1973, Barboursville’s Four County Players can boast of being Central Virginia’s longest continuously-operating community theater and “the cultural

A nonprofit organization with only two staff members but six membership levels, it relies on volunteers for most of its operations. “Probably upwards of 250 people are involved in a season,” says Debbie Owen, Four County Players director. “We really try to embody that feeling of a community theater and being a family. We’re very proud of what we’re creating in that environment.” One thing Four County is creating at the moment, thanks to more than 300 donors, is an enclosure for the back deck of its Mainstage theater. “It had a been a dream for a long time,” Owen says. “If you had to do a quick costume change, you would be doing it out there in all the weather, with skunks in the backyard, just exposed to everything. For our set build, we’ll have a proper scene shop; for storage of our materials and tools, things won’t be exposed to the elements.” The work will be completed in September, in time to construct the set for the Christmas musical, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. In the meantime, from October 11-27, audiences can enjoy The Savannah Sipping Society, a Steel Magnolias/ Golden Girls style comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten about four Southern women bored with their day-to-day routines. Drawn together by Fate over an impromptu happy hour, they discover lasting friendships and a renewed determination to live in the moment.

American Shakespeare Center Stuffy Shakespeare productions can ne’er be seen in downtown Staunton, but vividly imagined stagings in Elizabethan-era style take the boards yearround, thanks to the American Shakespeare Center (ASC). Founded in 2001 from the seeds of a traveling troupe, Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, the Staunton company, known for its high-spirited attitude, produces the liveliest Shakespeare around, and stages it in the handsome 300-seat Blackfriar’s Playhouse, the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theater. Performances observe period conventions—that means lights up, brisk pacing, minimal sets, and costumes that indicate class and character—but are enhanced with classic pop musical interludes. Actors play multiple parts, and the occasional gender-bending casting is a nod to the all-male casting of Shakespeare’s day. Shakespeare at Blackfriar’s is rousing, down-to-earth and a whole lotta fun. ASC now produces as many as 14 shows a year, interspersing its meat-and-potatoes repertory with contemporary fare. The fall season begins after Labor Day and includes a Roman Trilogy (Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar; his sequel, Antony and Cleopatra; and George Bernard Shaw’s “prequel,” Caesar and Cleopatra) plus a world premiere musical, The Willard Suitcases by Julianne Wick Davis. Davis’ play takes as its starting point the discovery of a handful of unopened suitcases in a shuttered psychiatric center in upstate New York, and imagines the lives—funny? strange? tragic?—of the patients who abandoned them. “If it is possible that there is a contemporary musical written to be performed in the Blackfriars manner and in Staunton, then this is it,” writes Ethan McSweeny, ASC’s new Director. “We are very excited about exploring Julianne’s touching and tuneful songs with ASC’s signature acoustic style on
instruments all played by members of the company.” The season will be augmented by a series of audience enrichment programs. For “Dr. Ralph Presents,” Fridays at 5:00 p.m., company co-founder Ralph Alan Cohen will speak with notable scholars and performers. In the weekly “Talkback Thursdays,” cast members will return for post-show question-and-answer sessions. “Discovery Space” on most Sunday mornings will offer a look behind the curtain at what goes into staging plays, including fight demonstrations and conversations with visiting artists.
As always in December, ASC will present the perennial holiday classic, A Christmas Carol. Alternating with Dickens’s heartwarming spook story will be Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!), an irreverent romp in which three actors reject their seasonal “Duty to Do Dickens,” and explore Christmas traditions from around the world instead.
Hamner Theater Founded in 2005, the non-profit Hamner Theater in Crozet is named for one of Nelson County’s most famous residents and finest storytellers,
Earl Hamner, Jr. A writer for such popular television shows as Falconcrest, Dynasty, The Twilight Zone and more, Hamner is best known as creator of The Waltons. As the theater’s co-founder and director Boomie Pedersen explains, the show “developed out [of] a televised version of his novella The Homecoming, which actually is the story of his father, who worked for DuPont in Waynesboro. “The only way to get back to Schuyler in Nelson County was to go to Charlottesville and take a bus. So, on Christmas Eve in 1923 his father got
stranded and didn’t come home. The Homecoming is about the family waiting for the dad to come home.” From Hamner’s memories grew a show so popular it ran for nine seasons and was followed by six more movies. When Pederson and playwright Peter Coy founded Hamner Theater, Pederson remembers, “we took that story and we created a piece which we did annually called The Homecoming.” With Earl Hamner, Jr. as an inspiration, and “a rich vein” of Nelson County talent to draw from, the theater today not only produces theatrical work but trains kids and adults in all aspects of theater production, from acting, improvising and directing, to lighting, set design and playwriting. In 2007 Hamner Theater began holding improv workshops and developed HIT—Hamner Improv Troupe. HIT rehearses weekly at Crozet Arts, and performs when and where it’s invited, including parties, even serving as an auction item. “I believe in improv wholeheartedly as a really good tool for living,” Pederson says, citing its usefulness for caregivers of kids and of Alzheimer’s patients, “where you have to be in the moment all the time. It’s really an excellent skill.” Hamner’s upcoming year-long Shakespeare Initiative will begin with

Hamner will take the final play of the series, a seven-person ensemble production of Twelfth Night, to nursing homes and other residential facilities, “even a jail if possible”—as well to parks and “other places where people might not expect to see theater.” Hamner’s Virginia Playwrights Initiative helps further its mission to
foster new stage works by giving playwrights the opportunity to workshop and rehearse their scripts with actors, a director and a dramaturg. Open discussions will provide feedback after each reading, because as Earl Hamner, Jr. said, “writing is rewriting.”

Community Driven when bent over double and cracking up laughing. “Since 2004,” writes Bent Theatre Director Andy Davis, “we have made it our responsibility to keep Central Virginia laughing. With each new year, our group becomes bigger and more ambitious, but at the same time, we hold true to our mottos and beliefs: ‘You Say It, We Play It.’” Bent Theatre’s short form improv comedians take inspiration from classic comedy shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway, Second City, SNL, MadTV, Comedy Sports, and Comedy Central’s Premium Blend. Their roughly two shows a month can be seen in Charlottesville at Gorilla Theatre and (on every fourth Friday) at The Bridge. Admission for most is a $10 suggested donation. Bent offers improv classes as well: 10-week classes for adults and 5-week sessions for kids.

Live Arts With its architecturally distinctive, concrete and titanium alloy building on Water Street just off Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, Live Arts sits right in the heart of the local arts scene. And it acts the part, offering classic and cutting-edge plays plus stand-up comedy and educational classes and workshops for children, teens, and adults. “High-caliber work unlike anything you’d expect to find in the area” is one goal for Live Arts, which began presenting work (on Market Street) in 1990 and now boasts over 700 actively engaged volunteers. Another is education. The theater holds summertime camps for kids ages four and up focusing on subjects including acting, production, comedy, music theater and dance. Adult classes cover Shakespearean action, beginning and intermediate level tap dancing,
The region’s established troupes have been joined recently by two new organizations. Andrea Douglas, executive director of the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, and writer, actor, and director Leslie Scott-Jones have revived the Charlottesville Players Guild, an adult company with roots in a dramatics club at the Jefferson School and an important part of Charlottesville’s cultural life from the mid-1950s through the late 1960s. The reformed troupe has been staging the Pulitzer Prize winning work of one of the most important playwrights in recent memory, August Wilson (1945-2005), whose 10-part epic, The Pittsburgh Cycle, depicts African-American life in the 20th century, decade by decade. DMR Adventures, located at the Belmont Arts Collaborative in Charlottesville, provides professional performing arts training for kids and adults, as well as producing shows and a cabaret series. On tap this summer and fall are three kids’ musicals: Hairspray JR (August 16-18), High School Musical JR (October 12-19) and Annie KIDS (November 15-23). A live theater performance with actors and audience in one space has an immediacy and power unmatched by digital diversions. And Central Virginia knows it. “I think this is a great place to do community theater,” Owen says. “People are coming out and are very thankful for what we’re doing.” “It’s a good time for theater and art in Charlottesville,” Nedzel. agrees “Our audiences have grown over the recent years.” “Whenever there is theater in the area, just go out and see it and help support it,” Pedersen urges. “It’s a really vital art form.” n

f you are like most people selling your home is a huge financial event, possibly the biggest of your life. It makes sense, then, to take care when you put it on the market in order to minimize your stress and maximize your profit. Here are some things to consider.
Choose the Right REALTOR® Real estate is a complex industry. Rules and regulations change, contracts are updated and addenda added frequently in response. In addition, the market goes up and down with significant variation from area to area and sometimes neighborhood to neighborhood within the same subdivision. When it’s time to sell it is essential to partner with an agent who is in the business full time, knows your neighborhood well and isn’t afraid to tell you the truth about the value of your home. To find the right REALTOR®, start with recommendations from friends and family who have bought or sold a home recently and had a good experience. You can also find agent ratings online. Then interview several who work in your area and pick one who is knowledgeable, whose advice you respect and with whom you feel comfortable working. The time may come when you need to act quickly to secure your dream home. You don’t want to lose out because you question the quality of your agent’s advice.
Price to Sell
CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM
You may not notice that the front door looks shoddy, a faucet in the hall bath leaks, the roof looks sketchy or the carpet or light fixtures are dated. Maybe you haven’t had time to get the dust off your fan blades, replace a burned-out bulb in a chandelier or clear out and straighten up the shelves in your closets. Or perhaps it’s your curb appeal that needs help. Whatever it is, if it’s not right, you can be sure the buyers and their agents will notice. With so much information readily available to them “buyers are savvier now” than they once were, says Candice Van Der Linde, with RE/MAX Realty Specialists, and will expect to see homes that are in good condition having been updated and renovated. You can also count on the buyer doing a home inspection. To prevent surprises, many agents, like Betty Aguilar with Nest Realty, advise their sellers to get a pre-inspection, especially if they have lived there for a while. If you discover you need a major repair like the roof needs help or the HVAC is in trouble, a pre-inspection will give you time to find the best, most cost-effective professional to fix it. If you wait for the buyer’s inspection before you act, you will be pressured to find someone who can do the job quickly to meet contract deadlines, which could cost more money. Also, the repair addendum may force you to get repairs done by a licensed contractor even if some are items you can easily fix yourself.
The most important part of any home marketing plan is the price. It determines who views your home and whether they give it real consideration. Unfortunately, most sellers are not objective about the value of their homes and want to price them too high. Doing so is perhaps the biggest mistake they can make. “Homes that are priced too high miss their target market,” says Michael Guthrie, Principal Broker and CEO of Roy Wheeler Realty Co. REALTORS® will show their buyer prospects eligible homes in a particular price range determined by what their lender tells them they can borrow, and what they are comfortable paying monthly. If yours is overpriced the buyers who would be a good match won’t see it. On the other hand, those who can afford it will be disappointed because the quality will not compare favorably to the other homes they view.
Avoid These Common
HOME SELLER MISTAKES BY CELESTE M. SMUCKER
After a time, if your home doesn’t sell, buyers and agents will assume there is a problem and will be even less interested. The result may be a disappointingly low price when the home finally sells. “Multiple Listing Association statistics throughout the country, show that the longer a property is on the market, the lower the selling price,” Guthrie explains. “The home becomes ‘stale’ and a price reduction results.” On the other
hand, “a well-priced home often sells quickly,” he continues.
Fix and Stage for Best Results Based on long experience and their knowledge of the condition of other homes for sale in your neighborhood, your REALTOR® will advise you about actions you need to take to make your home look its best. These can include cleaning up, de-cluttering, painting and completing repairs. Ignoring their advice can be costly.
Prepare for the Inconvenience While it may not always be convenient to maintain your home and make it available to show at a moment’s notice, failure to do so can mean a frustrating and extended time on the market. When an agent wants to show your house, turn on all the lights (even in the middle of the day), open the blinds and curtains, put out fresh towels in the bathrooms and make your countertops look their best by neatly stowing away toasters, blenders and coffee pots. Then take your dog for a walk, or drop him off at doggy day care, and think positive thoughts. The more often your home is shown, the more likely it is to sell quickly and for the highest price. If you are ready to sell, count on your professional REALTOR® to partner with you through the process to minimize your stress and maximize your profit. n Celeste Smucker is a writer and blogger who lives near Charlottesville.
