NEWS & VIEWS

Center for Nonprofit Excellence Brings Big Changes to Board Academy UVA Community Credit Union is pleased to announce George Ballew as Senior Vice President (SVP) of Member Options, LLC, the mortgage division of UVA Community Credit Union. The new position of SVP of Member Options, LLC reports to the credit union’s President/CEO, Alison DeTuncq and will support the credit union’s growth with a continued focus on developing community relationships. “We are excited to share George’s talents, energy, and passion for providing affordable mortgage solutions with the communities we serve. His experience, leadership, and commitment to the credit union’s vison of helping members achieve their financial goals will propel our mortgage division forward,” said Alison DeTuncq, President/CEO of UVA Community Credit Union. With 27 years of experience as a senior level mortgage banking expert, Ballew has built a solid network of community connections, as well as a wealth of mortgage knowledge and experience. As a leading executive, Ballew has launched, developed, and led new and fast-growing mortgage divisions in several respected financial institutions. He brings talent in program development, sales, business development, compliance, and team leadership. Most recently Ballew served as senior branch manager of Integrity Home Mortgage Corporation in Staunton, VA.

Increasing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Board Service Big changes follow the 10-year anniversary of Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE) flagship program, Board Academy. To ensure that Board Academy and board service, in general, become more welcoming and accessible, we’re offering the following: • Orientation to Board Service workshop—CNE has designed a new session specifically for those with little or no board experience so that every participant has a foundation on which to build throughout the remainder of the program. • Childcare subsidies—Scholarship recipients can now apply for an additional $200 discount on tuition to help offset the cost of childcare related to attending Board Academy’s evening sessions. • Difficult Conversations workshops— This series of three 2-hour sessions focuses on skills needed to engage fruitfully on tough topics, especially in relation to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A primary Board Academy goal is to widen the pathway to board service for those who might not have otherwise joined boards. “Board members should reflect the diversity of the communities they serve,” Cindy Colson, CNE’s Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships explains. “We want to make sure that anyone who is interested in board service and dedicated to their community can participate

in Board Academy. By adding an orientation session and additional funds to support childcare, in addition to program scholarships, we seek to attract applicants with a wider variety of backgrounds and experiences.” Research shows that diverse groups make better decisions, and yet ensuring everyone feels heard and included in collective decision-making can be challenging, especially when the power dynamics of race, class, and gender are at play. Openly addressing, and hopefully overcoming, these challenges takes skill. With effort, practice, and the right support, we can learn these skills. “Through the Difficult Conversations workshop series, CNE wants Board Academy to contribute to that learning so that our nonprofit board leaders are better prepared to make equitable decisions that positively impact our communities,” says Andrew Robinson, Board Academy Program Manager. 2019 Board Academy graduate and current CNE Board Fellow, Selena Cozart, Ph.D., reflects on her experience: “The instructors were excellent with their knowledge and content delivery. Sessions were interactive and practical in a way that helped me to envision myself in board situations and think through ways of responding and possible outcomes. I learned about a host of nonprofits in the area through engaging with others in their passionate pursuit of mission-based service. I am grateful for the generous scholarship that helped me to participate.” Board Academy accepts approximately 24 participants each year and has trained 234 members of local communities to be more effective board members. Classes run from January through early May. Applications for the 2020 cohort are due online by Friday, November 1, 2019. CNE will hold dropin information sessions on Board Academy at their offices located at 1701-A Allied St., Charlottesville, VA on Friday, September 20, 8:30–9:00 a.m. and Friday, October 18, 4:30–5:00 p.m.

Apples, Pumpkins, and Perfect Days

hat’s better than a ripe, juicy apple on a crisp fall afternoon? Maybe some warm pumpkin pie on a cool autumn evening? The question is ridiculous because the answer is unknowable, “a matter of taste,” not even to be ventured upon, at any rate, until one has tasted the over two dozen varieties of apples grown right here in Central Virginia. Virginia’s climate is ideal for apple growing, thanks to our warm days, cool nights and rich soil as Thomas Jeffer-

son discovered. “He was a big horticulturalist and grew a lot of heirloom varieties of apples,” says Cynthia Chiles of Carter Mountain Orchard and Chiles Peach Orchards, whose family has been farming the same land, not since Jefferson’s day, but for a good 100 years. Virginia’s First Foodie grew eighteen varieties of apples alone, including the Esopus Spitzenburg, his favorite for eating, and the Taliaferro, his favorite for making cider. The Taliaferro, Jefferson said, was “the best cider apple existing,” producing a beverage “more like wine than any other liquor I have tasted which was not wine.”

Today the Taliaferro is “Monticello’s mystery apple”—no one is sure what it was. According to one 1835 description, the fruit was “the size of a grape shot, or from one to two inches in diameter; of a white color, streaked with red; with a sprightly acid, not good for the table, but apparently a very valuable cider fruit. This is understood to be a Virginia fruit, and the apple from which Mr. Jefferson’s favorite cider was made.” Latter day Virginians grow so many apples that the Commonwealth is the fifth largest apple producing state in the country, with more than 16,000

acres under cultivation by over 100 commercial orchards. Virginia apple country now stretches from the mountainous northern Shenandoah Valley through the Roanoke Valley into Albemarle and Rappahannock counties, and Patrick and Carroll counties in the southwest. But the majority of apples are grown in the Shenandoah Valley. The apple industry contributes an estimated $235 million annually to the state’s economy. Apples require between 90 to 175 days to grow here. That means the harvest, which began in July, will extend through early November, with most

varieties being ripe for picking September through November. Right about now, that is. This is the season when farms welcome apple aficionados, leafers, and anyone who loves fresh fruit and fresh air, with pick-your-own days and harvest festivals. Red and Golden Delicious, Rome, Gala, Winesap, Granny Smith, Jonathan, York and Fuji—you’ve probably purchased all of these from your grocery store. But have you tried Albemarle Pippins, Pink Lady, Pristine, Piney River Gold, Rambo, Mutsu, Stayman, Ginger Gold, GoldRush, Jonagold, MonArk and Empire? Now is the time. “This is the time of year to write to the Great Pumpkin.” But even if Linus of the Peanuts comic strip is wrong that on Halloween night the thing will rise out of its pumpkin patch and fly through the air with a bag of toys, further over-exciting all the children already hyped up on sugar, the big orange squashes so festive and pretty are ripening now. Pies and jack o’ lanterns will be appearing soon. Jefferson grew pumpkins too, for himself and his family and guests, and to feed his workhorses, cattle, sheep, and pigs. Although his own pumpkin cultivars have been lost, Monticello today sells seeds for Connecticut Field Pumpkins, a 19th century variety he

Dickie Brothers Orchard “There are so many varieties of pumpkins,” says John Bruguiere co-owner, with his brother Tommy, of one of the oldest farms in Virginia, dating to 1752, 1758 and 1760, when King George II sold tracts of land to their great, great, great, great grandfather. “Some are known for their size while others are known for their production. Some of the heirloom varieties you see may not produce a lot per vine.” At Dickie Brothers Orchard, the Bruguieres grow about a half a dozen types, some for carving and some for baking. “For pies for our customers and ourselves we grow a cushaw squash,“ John says, “an elongated, green and white variegated variety” originally from the south of Mexico, and like all pumpkins full of vitamin-A and antioxidants like lutein, xanthin, and carotenes. In a good year, and this is one of them, Dickie Brothers in the Nelson County town of Roseland also harvests 70,000 bushels of apples in 19 varieties. The Pink Lady, due to ripen in early November, is John’s favorite, “a beautiful apple on the tree with a great combination of tart and sweet, so it’s mildly tart and has a wonderful crisp

Nelson County’s Silver Creek & Seamans’ Orchards (SCSO) is a family (or rather, families) affair as well, dating back to the 1930s. Today the orchards grow about 25 varieties of apples. The Seaman and Flippin families have held their Apple Butter Makin’ Festivals on the first and third Saturdays in October for over 30 years. They make their apple butter “the old-fashioned way,” stirring it constantly while it cooks in large copper kettles. The 2019 festivals, October 5 and 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will feature pick your own pumpkins, children’s games, food, crafters, a corn maze, live music and Mingo the Clown.

Apples, apple butter, jams, jellies, cider, and crafts will be for sale. Silver Creek & Seamans’ Orchards will Paint Tyro Pink again on Pink Lady Day, October 26. Go for the corn maze and a large selection of Pink Ladies and other apples, along with activities like apple tasting, apple butter making, fresh pressed cider sampling, and pumpkin picking. No pets will be admitted, except service animals.

Henley’s Orchard Henley’s Orchard in the Albemarle County town of Crozet was established in 1932 by Joseph T. Henley, Sr., the Commonwealth’s first fruit inspector. Today Tim Henley and his wife Sarah

run the orchard with their children, Jacquelyn, Brook, and Steele. The family will hold Henleyfest every Saturday in October. Tim Henley will offer hay rides, while other members of the family will make cider. Carpe Donut will sell apple cider donuts. The fields will be open for apple picking.

Carter Mountain Next to Michie Tavern and just down the road from Monticello, Carter Mountain Orchard offers a 40-mile view, and an abundant variety of apples. Public picking at Carter Mountain, owned by the Chiles family and established in 1912, began in 1974,

when a freeze ruined most of the fruit, and there wasn’t enough left to justify hiring a picking crew. The family ran an ad in the newspaper, “cleaned out a tiny section of an old barn, set up a card table and a cigar box, and wondered if anyone would come.” They did and they do. From September through November Carter Mountain offers hayrides, wine tastings, pumpkins, apple picking, apple butter, apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple pie, and “all things apple.”

Today the Shelton family orchard comprises more than 200 cultivars, including two recent additions, GoldRush, a late 20th century variety developed by Purdue University, and MonArk, an early ripening cultivar from the University of Arkansas. The Sheltons also grow Jefferson’s old favorite, the Esopus Spitzenburg, which in his day was especially valued for pies and cider, and was mentioned by Herman Melville in his still popular 1853 short story, “Bartleby, the Scrivener.”

craft vendors will be on hand along with music throughout the day, plus hayrides over the mountainside, workshops, and an apple pie contest.

Sarah’s Pumpkin Patch Sarah’s Pumpkin Patch is a threeacre spot on a working family farm in southeastern Madison County. The Patch will open on September 28 and stay open Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays noon to 5:00 p.m. through the month of October. Interested parties can pick plump pumpkins directly from the Patch or purchase them, perspiration-free, from a plentiful provision in the pretty shop and farm stand. Other attractions include a corn box, straw or hay bale

The Taliaferro, Jefferson said, was “the best cider apple existing,” producing a beverage “more like wine than any other liquor I have tasted which was not wine.” Vintage Virginia Apples Vintage Virginia Apples and Albemarle CiderWorks in North Garden are labors of love for the Shelton family, southern Albemarle County farmers since 1986, when Bud Shelton planted 20 fruit trees on newly purchased property. In 1992, inspired by heirloom apple tastings at Monticello, they began planting vintage varieties themselves.

Vintage Virginia Apples will join with the CoveGarden Ruritan Club to hold their 19th annual Apple Harvest Festival on Saturday, November 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with apples, apples . . . and more apples. Enjoy fresh pressed, mulled and hard cider, apple butter and Brunswick Stew simmering over open fires, old-fashioned fried apple pies, caramel apples, and more. Food and artisan

The Best of The Harvest Virginia’s bounty is highly prized. Our apples are shipped to markets in 15 states and more than 20 countries. When it comes to housing, little things shouldn’t make a difference.

If you believe you may be a victim of housing discrimination, contact HUD or your local Fair Housing Center:

Visit www.hud.gov/fairhousing or call the HUD Hotline 1-800-669-9777 (voice) 1-800-927-9275 (TTY)

Your Choice. Your Right. Your Home. A public service message from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in partnership with the National Fair Housing Alliance. The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status or disability. For more information, visit www.hud.gov/fairhousing.

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

If you have children or are pregnant and a landlord refuses to rent to you, requires a higher security deposit, limits the use of facilities, or says you can only live in certain areas of a housing complex ... that could be discrimination. And housing discrimination because of familial status is against the law.

Area Hard Cider Industry

CAAR REAL ESTATE WEEKLY WWW.CAAR.COM

“T

he explosive growth and popularity of our wineries, breweries, distilleries and cideries highlight all of the strengths of our area,” declares Simone Alley, REALTOR® with The Alley Team at Roy Wheeler Realty Co. She finds a lot to like in our adult beverage community. “It’s wonderful to be able to enjoy these growing businesses set in the beauty of our area and there is certainly something for everyone.

Enjoys Remarkable Growth BY MARILYN PRIBUS

“The industry has created a boon for visitors and the economy that benefits all of us, including the real estate industry,” she continues. “Families and Millennials can enjoy visiting these unique businesses, all with a story to tell.”

Hard Cider’s History

For early settlers, planting apple trees was a priority so they could make hard cider, a fermented beverage with an alcohol content generally between two and nine percent. The alcohol made cider safe to drink—in many cases safer than water. In addition, once apple trees were established all that was required was to pick the fruit. On the other hand, barley and hops required for beer-making are more finicky to grow and must be replanted annually. It’s rumored George Washington bribed voters with hard cider when run-

ning for a seat in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Thomas Jefferson is said to have grown nearly 20 varieties of apples chosen specifically for cider making, even including the pucker-inducing Hewe’s Crabapples, one of his favorites. Today, hard cider culture is enjoying a remarkable renaissance. According to Michelle McGrath of the United States Association of Cider Makers, there are around eight hundred cideries operating in the U. S., more than double the number as recently as five years ago. National “big name” brands like Angry Orchard sell roughly 75 percent of the hard cider, but regional and local cideries comprise the remaining 25 percent and their popularity continues to grow. Virginia has about two dozen cideries and a number are hereabouts in the Commonwealth’s prime apple-growing region. Just any old apple isn’t ideal for cider. You’ll find apples like the McIntosh or Honeycrisp at your grocery store, but seldom at a ciderworks. Apples for cider are generally more acidic and bitter with more tannins and hence are not suitable for eating. Varieties favored for cider often include heirlooms such as Winesaps, Harrisons, Romes, Pippins and others, sometimes including, yes, those bitter little crabapples. The same strain of apple can vary in flavor depending on its soil, the year’s weather, and even the elevation of a particular orchard. Cider makers fiddle with cultivation of the trees, the blending of various apple varieties, and their personal fermentation styles to develop unique products.

Celebrating Cider This year’s Cider Week Virginia will take place November 15 – 24 all across the Commonwealth with our local cideries participating. Each one has a website, often including their history, videos, menus and schedules of events. • Albemarle Cider Works has operated since 2009 in North Garden where their orchard is planted with more than 200 (not a typo!) varieties of apples. Their craft cider is pressed and fermented at the farm. While

make unique ciders. They use local apples from nearby orchards and family farms and, they say, seek to keep it fresh and keep it funky.

Visiting Cideries Each cidery has its own personality and visits provide a nearby getaway for yourself, with friends, or to entertain out-of-towners with a true Blue Ridge experience. In addition, apart from Cider Week, there are almost-weekly activities. As REALTOR® Alley sums it up, “During beautiful weather periods we can enjoy events from musical evenings with Bold Rock Cider amid the apple trees on Carter’s Mountain to Potter’s Craft Cider’s Summer Share Release party to an elegant wedding at Castle Hill Cider. They all add to the unique place we call home.” n
