Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville and Bank of America Partner to Build Homes Bank Volunteers Swing Hammers for Habitat at Harmony Ridge on Global Build Day Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville and Bank of America are partnering through the bank’s sixth

Global Build with Habitat for Humanity International. Recently Bank of America volunteers installed siding on ten affordable and energy-efficient homes in Habitat’s Harmony Ridge mixed-income neighborhood, located off of 5th Street in Charlottesville. Partner families, who have worked alongside Habitat staff building their homes since January, are scheduled to move into their new homes early next year. As part of this event, Carolyn Rainey, Senior Vice President at Bank of America, presented a check for $15,000 to Charlottesville Habitat for its Pathways to Housing program, which empowers low-wealth families to achieve economic stability and self-sufficiency through financial empowerment, increased earnings, and affordable housing. From October 5-12, a record 2,800 bank volunteers worldwide worked alongside Habitat homeowners to build, rehabilitate, or repair homes, helping to address affordable housing needs in 107 communities across nine countries. Meeting the need for safe, decent, affordable places to live is a significant challenge in Charlottesville. An estimated 12,000 families in our region either live in unsafe conditions or are cost burdened by housing. As a result, they are forced to make difficult choices between shelter, food, education, and healthcare. “Affordable housing is fundamental for individuals and families to achieve economic mobility,” says Brian D. Ludwick, Bank of America Market President. “Partnering with Habitat and engaging our volunteers is one way we can help build a more sustainable Charlottesville community as part of our approach to responsible growth.” Habitat and Bank of America have partnered for more than 30 years, helping homeowners build or improve the places they call home. Each year, #BofAVolunteers give more than 40,000 hours to Habitat in their communities through board service, home building initiatives and financial literacy training for Habitat homebuyers. About Bank of America: At Bank of America, we’re guided by a common purpose to help make financial lives better, through the power of every connection. We’re delivering on this through responsible growth with a focus on our environmental, social and governance (ESG) leadership. ESG is embedded across our eight lines of business and reflects how we help fuel the global economy, build trust and credibility, and represent a company that people want to work for, invest in and do business with. It’s demonstrated in the inclusive and supportive workplace we create for our employees, the responsi-

ble products and services we offer our clients, and the impact we make around the world in helping local economies thrive. An important part of this work is forming strong partnerships with nonprofits and advocacy groups, such as community, consumer and environmental organizations, to bring together our collective networks and expertise to achieve greater impact. Learn more at about.bankofamerica.com, and connect with us on Twitter at @BofA_News About Habitat: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville brings people together to build and rebuild homes and communities while catalyzing new pathways to safe, decent affordable housing. Our work has evolved from building one house at a time to developing vibrant, sustainable, mixed-income communities, where hardworking local families can achieve their dreams of homeownership. Since our founding in 1991, we have built 200 new homes and safely housed 2,000 neighbors, thanks to the commitment and dedication of our thousands of volunteers and supporters.

What’s Happening Around Town? Wild Virginia Holds Art Show for First Fridays! Join us for First Fridays as we celebrate eight artists whose work will be on display at CitySpace on the downtown mall. This event is free and open to the public on Friday, November 1 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at 100 5th St NE, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Hosting our first art show ever, we decided to title the evening “Soliphilia,” an exhibition of eight local artists featuring a variety of media to show their love of interconnected wild places in Virginia. The Montessori Mountaintop school will also join us to showcase student works! Proceeds from any sales will benefit Wild Virginia and the important work we do that conserves our state’s natural areas. Susan Sexton has been painting since she was a kid and absolutely loves getting lost in a painting. She paints on a diversity of mediums, ranging from rocks to wood to canvas, and wild animals are her favorite muse. She specializes in acrylic painted small square canvases. Linda Carson Goodling has been creating art in various forms since she was a child. Her career has involved art-related jobs ranging from making wooden toys and doll houses to hand coloring porcelain jewelry and etchings of landscapes, hunt prints and universities. When walking in the woods, she often brings back artistic implements.

Plein Air exhibit in the main gallery. Wild Virginia is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is protecting and connecting your favorite wild places. We educate citizens, landowners, and other stakeholders about threats to our forests through hikes, outings and events. We advocate for the connectivity and integrity of Virginia’s forests and waters. We influence decision makers by mobilizing citizens. Our three main campaigns are outings & education, water & energy, and habitat & connectivity. Become a member today! By joining Wild Virginia, you add your voice to hundreds of other Virginians speaking out to protect our wild places, and memberships are the backbone of our grassroots funding. We also say thank you by inviting you on special outings and to members-only events, or giving you 10 percent off at many local businesses.

n Alabama lawyer stands up for a death row prisoner, and becomes a crusader for penal justice. A Senate staffer investigates the use of “enhanced interrogation”—read “torture”— and takes on the White House and the CIA. And a Chinese artist, under house arrest, organizes an interactive exhibit at Alcatraz in support of prisoners of conscience. Want to know what’s happening in the world today and who’s creating change? Commentary and analysis have their place, but as Mark Twain said, “Don’t say the old lady screamed. Bring her on and let her scream.” Charlottesville’s 32nd Annual Virginia Film Festival, October 23-27, will let the old lady scream with more than 150 remarkable films: films of import with a nationwide profile, films on local or community-specific concerns, and films of no particular purpose at all except for good old-fashioned entertainment. “First and foremost, what the Festival does is provide a platform for storytelling” says Jody Kielbasa, Festival Director and UVA Vice Provost for the Arts. And what a wide platform it is. Along with surefire Academy Award contenders, hard hitting documentaries, foreign gems and family classics, the 2019 Festival features an international cast of film industry notables including celebrated actor, writer, and director Ethan Hawke, Emmy Award-winning actress Ann Dowd, bestselling author John Grisham, actor Dennis Christopher, and more than 100 filmmakers. “Once again, we have a lineup of films that includes some of the year’s most heavily-discussed titles of the awards season, plus some of the most exciting work from around the globe,” Kielbasa says. “I think we’ve become a festival that tries to reflect our community by bring-

We detect smokescreens. Housing discrimination isn’t always obvious. These are the kinds of smokescreens you might run into:

“Sorry, we’ve changed our minds about selling.” “We just rented that apartment.” “It doesn’t look like you qualify for the loan.”

Visit www.hud.gov/fairhousing or call the HUD Hotline 1-800-669-9777 (voice) 1-800-927-9275 (TTY)

Your Choice. Your Right. Your Home. A public service message from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in partnership with the National Fair Housing Alliance. The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status or disability. For more information, visit www.hud.gov/fairhousing.

Skyline Drive This 105-mile National Scenic Byway runs the entire length of Shenandoah National Park, winding its way through Shenandoah’s almost 200,000 acres along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The drive begins in the north of the Shenandoah Valley at Front Royal to Waynesboro, where it converges with the Blue Ridge Parkway. The byway is replete with more than 70 overlooks from which to enjoy stunning autumn views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the Piedmont to the east. The strictly enforced 35 mph speed limit allows visitors to take in the views of the orchards, forests and farmland along the way. The road is well travelled in the fall, so expect the drive to take between three and four hours.

flock to Virginia year-round to enjoy its stunning natural beauty, but autumn is a particular favorite among visitors, as well as locals. This is not surprising, given that the Commonwealth is home to one-quarter of the Appalachian Trail, 38 state parks, 21 national parks, and eight mountain ranges which feature peaks that soar above 5,000 feet, providing locals and visitors ample opportunity to bask in the splendor of fall. When the days gradually shorten toward the mid-to-end of September, the process of photosynthesis is abbreviated. As a result, the leaves on deciduous trees reduce production of chlorophyll and we begin to see the first signs of a gradual change from green, to the vibrant yellows, oranges and reds that we associate with autumn. “The progression of the color change depends upon elevation,” says Steve Marianella, REALTOR® with Wintergreen Real Estate and a volunteer at the Wintergreen Nature Foundation. “The colors change gradually, starting in the mountains, and slope downwards as the weeks progress.”

The duration and intensity of the color of fall foliage is highly dependent on moisture. Little rain results in an accelerated pace of leaf fall making for a shorter season, while average to high rainfall produces leaves with more brilliancy, as well as an extended fall foliage viewing period. According to the Virginia Department of Forestry, this year a vast portion of the state experienced a late summer drought, thus we can expect an abbreviated and less vibrant viewing season. Despite this fact, it is safe to say that by mid-to-late October we can expect to see trees throughout the Commonwealth awash in fall color at its finest, making it the ideal time for “leaf-peeping.”

Crabtree Falls in George Washington National Forest Photo opportunities abound at Crabtree Falls in Nelson County—a favorite of Marianella’s—which has the distinction of being the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. Located in George Washington National Forest, the falls are an impressive sight any time of year, but they’re particularly spectacular in

autumn, when the vivid yellows, reds and oranges of the leaves on the trees are juxtaposed with the falling water. Located a mere six miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 27, the falls’ five combined cascades tumble a total of 1,200 feet.

Ingalls Overlook Colleen Marshall—a REALTOR® with Long & Foster Real Estate—has helped a number of out-of-state clients find their ideal home in Virginia. Several chose to move to the Commonwealth due to its temperate climate, as well as the opportunity to enjoy the “great outdoors.” “Virginia’s climate is conducive to being outside year-round,” says Marshall. “I’ve actually experienced four seasons in one day. If you don’t like the weather in Virginia, I recommend waiting a few minutes!” Marshall is particularly fond of bucolic Bath County, and suggests taking a scenic drive on Route 39. Along the way, you’ll find Ingalls Overlook, located in Warm Springs. “The view is spectacular there any time of year,” she says. “But especially in the

Also known for its scenic beauty, the Blue Ridge Parkway meanders for 469 miles through Virginia and North Carolina, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Scenic views and hiking trails are plentiful, and there are eight campgrounds along the Parkway which offer a variety of camping experiences. Novice and more experienced photographers will enjoy the 280 pullouts along the road that look out onto unobstructed, breathtaking vistas.

Carter Mountain Orchard Family owned and operated by the Chiles family, Carter Mountain Orchard is situated next to Monticello and Michie Tavern. Known for its expansive views of Charlottesville, the Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind with a glass of cider and one of the family’s famous apple cider doughnuts. Their orchards are family-friendly, and open for apple picking from August through November.

Hot Air Ballooning Experience Virginia’s fall foliage from a birds-eye-view, with a peaceful hot air balloon ride. There are several ballooning companies throughout the Commonwealth, many of which operate year-round. Choose from a sunrise or sunset flight, and be sure to have your camera at-the-ready, as the views from above are simply magnificent! There’s no place like Virginia in autumn. With scenic drives, miles of hiking and biking trails, wineries, cideries, historic sites, and more; there’s simply no reason to stay indoors. n
