“Canned Cocktails Made with Premium Distilled Spirits” is how Charlottesville’s new Waterbird Spirits describes its vodka drinks. Vodka is produced from all sorts of things these days: grains like sorghum, corn, wheat and rye, but also molasses, soybeans, grapes, rice, and sugar beets. Waterbird makes its vodka with American grown potatoes, and puts it into two canned cocktail varieties: the Moscow Mule, and the Vodka Soda & Lime. The Moscow Mule is crafted with ginger beer and natural flavors. The Vodka Soda & Lime marries its vodka with carbonated soda water and natural flavors. Waterbird uses only cane sugar—no high-fructose corn syrup— and its drinks are gluten-free. Both are available in local grocery stores.

North American Sake Brewing They have a love affair with sake going on over at North American Sake Brewing in Charlottesville’s IX ART Park, though not your father’s sake. Chinese in origin (dating as far back as 4800 BC, some say), sake came to Japan in 300 BC, and is thought of as a traditional Japanese drink today. Often described as rice wine, sake‘s fermentation process, which converts starch to alcohol with the help of a mold called koji, is similar to that of beer—and like beer it’s being made in an ever-growing number of inventive permutations. North American Sake Brewing co-founder Jeremy Goldstein grew up in California, where warm sake went with sushi and was no big deal—and usually nothing special. It wasn’t till after he’d moved to Virginia that he got his first taste of the good stuff— fresh, cold, and exquisitely crafted, not mass-produced—on a trip back to Los Angeles in 2014.

Vitae Spirits Distillery Goldstein was amazed. He bought a few bottles and shared them with his beer-brewing friend Andrew Centofante, who promptly turned his basement into a sake lab, making more, and more, and more—a process and a passion that led them to visit sake brewers in the U.S. and Japan, to found North American Sake Brewing in 2016, and to open a restaurant and brewery to the public in IX ART Park in August 2018, where they brew all their sake on site. Today Centofante continues as Head Brewer, while Jeremy takes the lead in business affairs. North American Sake Brewing’s seven different sakes are made using rice grown on American farms, water from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and local hand-crafted koji, hand bottling the result. Their flagship brew, Real Magic, made from single milled rice similar to a traditional Japanese junmai (“pure rice”) style, is “clear, mellow, and smooth, with notes of pear, crisp apple, and a long umami finish.” Quiet Giant is extra dry, “with a long finish and delicious notes of melon and umami.” Big Baby is unfiltered, giving it a cloudy appearance from suspended rice particles and active ingredients. The taste is bold and alcohol forward, with notes of banana.

Start brewing beer in your mother’s house, and you wind up distilling whiskey in a school. That’s the cautionary tale, or inspirational story, rather, of what happened to Ian Glomski, whose Vitae Spirits Distillery opened in the former Henry Ave Learning Center in Charlottesville in November, 2015. Glomski’s love for brewing led him to a 20+ year career in microbiology, and now it’s led him full circle. “Making alcohol in some shape or form had been my life ever since I was 18,” he says. “It brought me back to becoming a distiller.” Today Vitae Spirits produces two gins, four rums, orange, coffee and paw paw liqueur, anisette, and—so far—two “collabs,” one-time collaborations sold in a limited number of locations. Much of what it uses to flavor its spirits—hardy orange, ginger, lemongrass, mint and cilantro, for example—is grown in the area, sometimes in Glomski’s own backyard. Their aromatic Modern Gin, produced from American sugar cane molasses and Blue Ridge Mountain water, features 17 different botanicals. Pour some in a drinking glass, add ice and shake a little, and all that botanical oil will lightly cloud the glass. “Terroir” is a term familiar to wine lovers, but at Vitae Spirits it connotes not just a particular natural environ-

For their Distiller’s Reserve Barreled Champion Collab #1 they took the Violator Doppelbock beer brewed by their Charlottesville neighbors Champion Brewing Company, and aged it in rye bourbon barrels from nearby Ragged Branch distillery. Glomski has worked with Mudhouse Coffee Roasters too, developing a coffee liqueur, cold brewed with Mudhouse’s Intention Blend and blended with house-made sugar cane spirits. The result: “Notes of chocolate, soft stone fruit like plum and cherry, and caramel.”

Bourbon Beef, a mash-fed Black Angus available in several different cuts. A cask strength, 121-proof, “Cowboy Cut” bourbon is promised soon, and a Straight Rye Whiskey is currently aging in the rickhouse. Ragged Branch gives distillery tours daily at 4:00 p.m. Its tasting room, located on a knoll overlooking the distillery and rickhouse, features a fireplace, a covered porch, an outdoor patio, and panoramic mountain views.

“The only mother-daughter distilling duo in the country” is how Christine and Lauren Riggleman describe themselves over in Afton. Christine Riggleman opened Silverback Distillery there in 2014. Mother and daughter together make vodka, gin, rye and bourbon, operating two stills, a traditional pot still, and what’s called a continuous column—27-foot-tall—that runs 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Copper Fox Distillery opened in Sperryville in January of 2005. Today it produces 12 different spirits—single malt, gin, bourbon and rye—starting from scratch with Virginia products, malting, smoking, and milling their own grain, then fermenting and distilling it on the premises. “Our flagship is our single malt whiskey,” says Peter Morganer, one of its five distillers. “In Scotland they smoke their barley with peat. We were the very first distillery in the world to smoke barley with fruitwood—we smoke it with apple and cherry wood. When our owner Rick Wasmund was growing up, he loved the smell of different kinds of fruitwood when he

After a career in building and development, Toomey was watching the History Channel one night when he saw a Modern Marvels episode about American whiskey. MEET LOCAL ARTISANS ON THE 25TH ANNUAL

ne of the most appealing quality-of-life aspects of Central Virginia is the vibrant art scene with its variety of artisan studios in Charlottesville and surrounding Blue Ridge communities. The Tour was founded by regional artisans in 1994 to raise awareness of professionals living and working in our area. An excellent way to explore this art trove is the 25th annual Artisans Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, November 9 and 10.

This year, 46 artisans are featured in 25 locations. And Central Virginia’s fall foliage provides a stunning backdrop to this free driving tour of the studios of returning favorite and new artists. During the tour, artisans welcome the public into their studios and galleries. For many visitors, this chance to meet with and talk to the artisans is what they look forward to the most. The tour is also a fascinating opportunity to learn about the processes involved in the creation of pottery, furniture, weaving, jewelry, glass, and other media. At some studios, visitors see demonstrations and in others they have a chance at hands-on experience.

An excellent way to explore this art trove is the Artisans Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, November 9 and 10. “I find joy in creating jewelry,” she declares. “It’s my passion.” She says she looks to forms in nature such as waves on the ocean or rolling hills. “The metal may look like different types of leaves or rain drops. Each piece is unique, even though I create several pieces with the same basic design.” Studio 6. Laurie Duxbury found her interest in weaving as a child visiting historic sites in Virginia. Today she works at her loom to create both clothing and home accessories. She has studied in Sweden and her weaving has evolved into various combinations of colors and traditional patterns and techniques, although with a strong sense of contemporary design. Duxbury also teaches various forms of weaving in workshops and one-onone. “Weavers spend a lot of time with just themselves and their looms,” she says. “When we weave with a group, we bounce ideas off of each other, coming up with lots of ‘what-if’ ideas.
