NEWS & VIEWS What’s Happening Around Town? Art Festival Fundraiser to Support Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville

Third Annual ARTCHO Scheduled for November 2 at Ix Art Park More than 50 local and international artists will be represented at the third annual ARTCHO, an art-focused, community-oriented, family-friendly art festival to be held Saturday, November 2 at Ix Art Park from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This year’s event aims to make both art and affordable housing more accessible to local families. “The goal of ARTCHO is to make art more accessible. We exhibit high-quality artwork at prices that regular folks can afford,” says ARTCHO co-founder Eileen Butler. “It’s also a great opportunity to support local artists and a local nonprofit. This year we’re supporting Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville. They believe in diverse, inclusive, and vibrant communities of neighbors that transcend socioeconomic and cultural divides, and so does ARTCHO.” In addition to art, this year’s ARTCHO at Ix Art Park will feature workshops, live music, food trucks, beer, wine and sake. Also benefiting Habitat will be a silent auction of home décor items from The Habitat Store that have been painted, decorated, or mosaiced by local artists. Meeting the need for safe, decent, affordable places to live is a significant challenge. An estimated 12,000 families in our region either live in unsafe conditions or pay more than they can afford for housing. As a result, they are forced to make difficult choices between shelter, food, education, and healthcare. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville is addressing the lack of

affordable housing in our community through homebuilding, community revitalization, and housing sector collaborations. Habitat is also partnering with the residents of Southwood Mobile Home Park as they reimagine their neighborhood, transforming it from 340 trailers into a vibrant mixed-income, mixed-use community of affordable and market-rate homes without resident displacement. St. Anne’s-Belfield School Opens Natural Playground St. Anne’s-Belfield School has opened a natural playground on the Belfield Campus, complete with a mud kitchen, tree cookies, balance logs, a sandbox, a gathering space, and more. “Nature learning spaces are really great for kids,” said Grades K – 4 science teacher Kayla Wilson. “They’re not like traditional playgrounds where things are brightly colored and there are limited uses to each item. Take a slide for example, you can go up the slide or down the slide. Nowadays playgrounds are so safe that kids don’t

really have a chance to challenge themselves, or grow their self-regulation skills and build self-confidence. But they still want to challenge themselves, so they begin using playgrounds in unsafe ways.” In contrast, a natural playground affords children opportunities to challenge themselves with almost every available item. Stumps, for example, can be climbed, or kids can hop between them pretending they are lily pads, or imagine that they are stranded on rocks under a waterfall, or even pretend that they are tables for a family dinner. “Studies have shown that nature spaces allow kids to be more creative, that there is less bullying, and kids are less sedentary when they have access to a nature playground,” said Wilson. “They also engage many more of their senses, which makes it a richer play environment.” For Wilson, the nature playground has already featured in her outdoor science curriculum with students in Grades K, 1, and 3 having science lessons in the space. In the Pre-School, students have begun to request nature playground time on a daily basis. “Being outside in nature has so many benefits for young children,” said Director of Pre-School Programs Kathy Carpenter. “Our children are often inside, playing with close-ended toys that an adult has designed with little opportunities for creative input from a child. Their hands are not getting the ‘work outs’ they used to from digging and making a mud pie, for example, and their brains are not getting the input that nature provides. In turn then, if you analyze gross and fine motor skills, they have been significantly falling in young children in direct correlation to the lack of outdoor play. This has a long-term impact on growth and development.

“So, what does a natural playground do for young children? Digging and building provide numerous fine motor opportunities which our children so clearly lack. They gain sensory input from the smells and the feel of the soil and pebbles in their hands. This sensory feedback, in turn, provides a soothing and calming effect on children, allowing them to return to traditional classrooms with more focused attention.” Carpenter also mentioned the importance of imaginative play for young children, including the storytelling aspect of such play and bringing their own life experiences into the stories. “Through this play, their social emotional growth expands,” said Carpenter. “They collaborate and communicate with others, work out strategies and conflicts together, and learn flexible thinking. The impact of creative play and exploration creates a motivation to learn. And when learning is self-directed, the impact is great. Children learn resiliency and take risks. They consider how to make new creations, ponder new strategies if something is not working, retest, and make new discoveries. “Besides all of these skills being formed, one of the happiest consequences of Pre-Schoolers in nature is they develop empathy for our world. They care about that little bug crawling that they are investigating. They become genuine stewards for our world around us. The small, joyful world of the playground becomes integrated with an understanding of the larger world around us.” St. Anne’s-Belfield School is a co-educational Pre-School – Grade 12 day school of nearly 900 students, with an international boarding program in Grades 9 - 12. It holds as its core purpose to inspire and prepare the next generation of exemplary citizens and visionary leaders, and recognizes six core values: integrity, curiosity, diversity, creativity, agency, and impact. Plans for the community changed significantly after the death of Harmon in 1967. The parcels of land that were acquired by that time were sold to the Great Eastern Development Corporation. Thereafter, Great Eastern developed the land, arranged the lots, outlined the lake and designed the golf course. Lake Monticello was finally completed by Harry Faulconer—originally a partner at Great Eastern—whose independent construction firm bought out the remaining partners. A Sense of Community When you speak to residents of Lake Monticello about why they like living there, one response is constant—its sense of community. Diana Calvo recently moved from Charlottesville to Lake Monticello with her husband and daughter. Having

lived in the heart of Boston for a significant part of her life, the transition to Virginia took some getting used to— the move from Charlottesville to Lake Monticello even more so. “I was not at all comfortable with the prospect of living in the woods, as well as with the wildlife that naturally comes along with it,” says Calvo. The educational system, including a state-of-the-art high school, is a big plus and another important factor is that it’s a reasonable commute to both Charlottesville and Richmond. Many people “discover” Fluvanna because they already know someone who’s a resident. For example, when Fluvanna County Administrator Eric Dahl, his wife Jill, and their sons moved north from Florida, they bought a home in the county where his two brothers already lived. “Jill and I really like the rural environment and change of seasons rather than the overcrowding and heat of Tampa,” he says. He particularly cites the outdoor opportunities at Pleasant Grove Park. “We like hiking and biking, both locally and in the mountains and also water activities like kayaking on the Rivanna and James River.” They also appreciate the nearness to Charlottesville where Jill is program administrator at Lugo-McGinness Academy, a Charlottesville School District trauma-informed educational setting.

Yesterday and Today Fluvanna dates back to 1777, when it separated from then Albemarle County and was named for the Fluvanna River in honor of Queen Anne of England. Various settlements grew over the years. Take, for example, today’s Kents Store community. “It was named for James Madison Kent who established a store there in 1845,” explains former Scottsville mayor Chris Long of Long & Foster’s Old Ivy Office. “His son George established a U.S. Post Office there in 1875.” The store bought and sold crops, livestock, furs, and other products from local farmers until it was sold in 1900. The Kent family operated a drug store in the area until the 1950s. The county celebrates its history with nearly 20 National Historic Landmarks from the Courthouse in Palmyra to the slate-roofed Seay’s Chapel Methodist Church built at the turn of the last century. The 1854 Pleasant Grove House, another National Historic Landmark, was once part of a plantation growing tobacco and produce that were shipped to Richmond on the Rivanna. Now the centerpiece of Pleasant Grove Park, it houses the County Museum and Wel-

come Center which is open for tours of exhibit galleries on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from noon to 4 p.m. on weekends. Admission is free. The park itself is a triangle of land adjacent to Fluvanna High School and roughly bounded by Route 53 and the Rivanna. About 25 years ago, the county purchased nearly 1,000 acres of farm land and eventually the Fluvanna Heritage Trail Foundation was formed. Today the Foundation works with the Parks and Recreation Department and they have created 22 miles of trails starring river habitat, wildflowers, grassy fields, and woodlands. For instance, walkers on the Tree Identification Trail can learn the names of many native trees. The Sandy Beach Trail is an ADA-accessible gravel trail leading to the Rivanna River. “A Natural Experience” is a guide to various park trails and is downloadable from the county website. The dog park is also popular, says County Administrator Dahl. “There are three different gated areas,” he explains, “so owners can choose for their dog to be with larger or smaller dogs.” Waste disposal bags are provided. Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations and must be leashed except in the specific dog exercise areas. The dog park is also

A number of sports leagues serve Fluvanna youth including softball, baseball, basketball, soccer and aquatic teams. The Carysbrook Sports Complex on Route 15 between Palmyra and Fork Union hosts a variety of recreational venues. There’s a playground plus softball, soccer, and baseball fields. An indoor gym hosts basketball, pickleball and volleyball. When not scheduled for league use, both indoor and outdoor facilities are open to the public. The hours vary by season.

Seniors Fluvanna boasts a large senior community with lots of support and many folks find this a great place to retire. The county’s Senior Programs list activities—many free—for those 55 and better including charitable projects, exercise programs, guest speakers and community forums. One example is JABA (Jefferson Area Board on Aging) which operates once-weekly programs including lunch and doings at several locations in the county. In addition, JAUNT serves Fluvanna with a circulator route within the county and a commuter route with stops between Fork Union, Charlottesville and urban Albemarle County. Trips are discounted for seniors and persons with disabilities.

Et Cetera As the county’s population grows modestly, there are more restaurants, groceries, and other businesses people want to have handy. County wineries such as Thistle Gate and Cunningham Creek are also popular. Finally, the county offers a handy website with information about the historical, social and recreational aspects of life there including calendars of activities.
