What’s Happening Around Town? Southwood Club Youth Host Second Annual Jingle Jog 5k and Fun Run Energized with holiday cheer, over 100 Club youth and community friends raced across the finish line at Southwood’s second annual Jingle Jog 5k. Runners enjoyed navigating the 3.2-mile course on a brisk December afternoon and warming up with postrace hot chocolate. Younger competitors dashed through their own route in the 1-mile Fun Run. Mariah Naegele, Southwood Program Coordinator, organized the Run Club in 2018 as part of the Club’s healthy lifestyles programming. Run Club participants set personal and team goals, practice training for longer distances, and compete in local races. Several older runners participated in the 2019 Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler in August. What started as a simple idea to excite Club kids about running and physical activity now culminates with the much-anticipated community race, marking the end of another successful running season.

Based on their smiles, I see they’re as proud of their accomplishments as our staff are of their growth,” says Boys & Girls Club CEO James Pierce, who served as a Jingle Jog course marshal. “Coach Mariah has done a remarkable job helping Southwood kids train, and this race is the perfect opportunity for them to showcase their abilities. Run Club instills in our youth a healthy and fun habit that will last a lifetime.” Along with participating in the race, Run Club members were responsible for mapping the racecourse, coordinating volunteers, and constructing motivational posters. After all runners finished, Club kids were recognized at an award ceremony for finishing the Fun Run or 5k and meeting their goal times. One 11-year-old Club boy was particularly proud of his accomplishment. “I can’t believe I just ran a 5k,” he declared. “Running with everyone was a lot of fun. I liked running past my house and neighbors, and I’m ready to race even faster next year.” Boys & Girls Club especially thanks the following community Jingle Jog supporters: Pearl Island Catering, Nike, Blue Ridge Rotary, and Charlottesville Track Club. unglasses—check. Windbreaker—check. Lunch is packed and it’s a beautiful day. Let’s go skiing! Mother Nature has her whims, and the temps may be mild, but it’s winter all winter at the Wintergreen and Massanutten resorts, where snow machines make white stuff when the weatherman won’t. With 11,000 and 6,000 beautiful acres respectively, Wintergreen in Nellysford and Massanutten in McGaheysville are four-season Shenandoah Valley destination spots for lovers of golf, swimming, hiking, fine dining, spa rejuvenation and—when it’s cold, or even when it’s not that cold—all manner of slippery fun.

Massanutten Massanutten was the first resort in Virginia to offer snowboarding and snow tubing trails, plus lighting on all its ski trails, a quad chairlift, and a loading conveyor belt.

Exciting Wintergreen and Exhilarating Massanutten BY KEN WILSON

“Our most popular winter sports have always been skiing and snowboarding, but there is a ton of winter fun to have on or off the slopes,” says Massanutten’s Marissa Andrick. “Other activities include ice skating, escape rooms, our virtual reality arcade, and the heated Indoor WaterPark. With the addition in 2018 of late-night Northern Lights Tubing”—to the glow of neon lights and pumping music— “we’ve seen snow tubing’s popularity skyrocket as well.” A 125-ton chiller and over 34,000 feet of tubing transform the Massanutten Fitness & Rec Club tennis court into a 4,930 square-foot outdoor skat-

ing rink that can accommodate up to 130 skaters at a time. The five-step Snow Circuit at Easy Street program offers lessons in skiing and snowboarding. Skiers and snowboarders have a newly remodeled lodge to relax in after an afternoon or evening’s exertions, real or imagined. The new Lift Coffee Bar, conveniently located in the General Store right next to the ski slopes, serves specialty beverages like lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos to order. Energy-boosting snacks include bagels, muffins, scones, and old-fashioned fudge.

Hideaway Lounge has a huge glass window for watching all the action in the WaterPark, and features a full-service bar with table service, plus a full menu of appetizers, sandwiches, and specialty cocktails. Campfire Grill offers crafted pizza, camp stove chili, chicken dumplings, beer can burgers and s’mores! Immersive Escape Rooms offer adventures like taking on a mob boss, searching for a mysterious jewel in Zanzibar, and rescuing a captive on Voodoo Island. Twelve Active Virtual Reality (VR) Games let patrons fight robots and zombies, or experience a scene from a horror movie in 3-D. Massanutten will cap its 2020 season with its third annual Snow Moon Fest, March 6-8, featuring an Arctic Plunge, 4K race and walk, live music, tap takeovers and samples, fireworks, a torchlight parade and more. Massanutten Realty Broker and Managing Member Cindy Whitelock was married at Massanutten’s ski lodge

families and singles to commuters and retirees—along with weekend getaways and vacation rentals, with a range of recreational options for all of them. In addition to Property Owners Association (POA) amenities, Massanutten homeowners get discounts on skiing, golf, and the indoor/outdoor water park. POA fees are less than $70 a month! Central water and sewer are provided by Utilities Inc., a private water and sewer company. “In mid-December homes for sale ranged from $229,800 for an updated 1981 three-bedroom, two-bath house with a single car garage, to $459,900 for a four bedroom three-and-a-half bath log home with a double garage built in 2000.” Not surprisingly, these homes are rising in value: “the number of Massanutten home sales almost exactly matched last year’s for the same period, but median sale prices were up 13.4 percent,” notes Whitelock. Many of these homes are being snapped up by savvy active seniors. “One couple from New York’s Long

My family has long enjoyed skiing at Massanutten, even more so as the resort has expanded its snow sports offerings in recent years.” Located only minutes from James Madison University (JMU), Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), and Bridgewater College, the Miller-Coors brewery and the Merck plant, the residential community nestled inside Massanutten now numbers more than 1,000 homes. “Massanutten’s residential neighborhoods date to the early 1970s,” Whitelock says. “And homes are still being built. One of Massanutten’s strong points is its wide variety of sizes and styles. “Every residential neighborhood of Massanutten has a mix of homes which are primary residences—from

Wintergreen Located southwest of Charlottesville, adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Wintergreen Resort is a popular vacation and conference hideaway with 45 holes of championship golf, an award-winning tennis program, a full-service spa, 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and a wide variety of dining options. Come December the snowbirds start arriving for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. Many find lodging in the resort’s nearly 220 condominium-style units. Skiers of all levels find Wintergreen inviting. Twenty-eight percent of its snowy terrain is graded for beginners, while 16 percent is more difficult, 44 percent is more challenging yet, and 12 percent is for experts only. Wintergreen’s Terrain Park likewise accommodates daredevils of all skill levels. Among the park’s more than 40 features on any given day are tabletops and fun boxes, spines and hips, straight, rainbow, and s-rails, battleships and down-kinks. A dedicated lift takes users up the slope fast, so they can come down even faster.

Virginia’s largest tubing park, the Plunge, is built on a hill over three football fields long. Tubing fans (ages 6 and up, and at least 42 inches tall) zoom down this “Scream Machine” at speeds up to 30 mph, then take a conveyor lift back up and do it again. Slide, glide and spin fans can enjoy the 45 x 90foot Shamokin Ice Rink, located in the heart of the mountain village, just off the Blue Ridge Terrace. Refrigerated by a 125-ton chiller, it accommodates up to 60 people at a time. Wintergreen’s state-of-the-art computerized, SnowPower snow system, comprising 400 snow guns, 45 weather stations and 40,000 linear feet of pipeline, keeps its 130 slide-able acres with 24 ski and snowboard slopes and trails, two terrain parks, the state’s largest tubing park, and a snow park for young kids, nice and slick. Because the quality of the snow on the mountain is so important to a skier’s overall experience, Wintergreen has beefed up SnowPower this year, adding ten new snow guns with a greater range of working temperatures, the better to make snow in Virginia’s moderate winters. The new machines are highly energy efficient, in keeping with Wintergreen’s new Eco Values sustainability program, and its participation in the NSAA climate challenge. In another technology upgrade, Wintergreen is launching a new mobile app for skiers and riders, featuring an interactive trail map displaying groomed and open trails, lift schedules,

a calendar of events, and a resort map identifying where various facilities and services are located. The app’s GPS feature will track a guest’s location on the resort map, so that friends and family can easily find

each other. The feature will also record a skier’s total vertical feet for the day and the season, along with personal records for vertical feet and distance. For app users who wish to compare their performance with that of other skiers and riders, there will be an overall leaderboard, tallying who has skied the most at the mountain. When it’s time for a real meal, Wintergreen’s flagship restaurant, the Copper Mine Bistro, serves time-honored classics alongside contemporary creations with the very best ingredients, breakfast through dinner. Weekenders can choose between an a la carte lunch and the Dagwood Buffet. Over at The Edge, the burgers are made with GMO-free, 100 percent Virginia beef. Friday and Saturday nights bring live entertainment, and Sunday brunch comes with mimosas or a Build Your Own Bloody Mary Bar. On Hump-Day Wednesdays, The Edge turns into a high-class diner, serving breakfast for dinner. Six of the resort’s ten restaurants now have new menus, and all lounges offer a selection of trendy beers and beverages including a Winterfest Hard Cider, a collaboration between Blue Toad Hard Cider and Wintergreen Resort. Tim Merrick, Managing Broker with Wintergreen Real Estate Co, remembers witnessing the first roads being

built up the mountain to Wintergreen in the late summer of 1974: “I was so impressed with its potential that I left Washington, D.C. and never looked back,” he remembers. A lover of fly-fishing, golf, skiing, hiking, natural gardening, and biking, Merrick has found the perfect spot, and he’s as enthusiastic as ever about Wintergreen living. Interested homebuyers can choose mountaintop living in Wintergreen itself, or valley living in the nearby Wintergreen community of Stoney Creek. Stoney Creek residents enjoy a range of resort activities right there in the valley, including 27 holes of golf, an outdoor pool, tennis courts, and twenty-acre Lake Monocan Park. Park amenities include a snack bar and a picnic area with charcoal grills, horseshoe pits, a sand beach with volleyball court, plus recreational equipment. “There is a really vibrant social scene, and more and more people, believe it or not, are living on the mountain year-round,” Merrick says. “You’ve got everything that’s coming to this area now: the breweries, the wineries, the cideries, music entertainment in the county at LOCK’N and Festy and also Wintergreen, and tremendous theater with Brian Cloudus. You’ve got fishing and hunting and hiking and

biking and golf and tennis and spas and exercise areas right at your fingertips. And you’re only 35 minutes from Charlottesville. “What’s more,” he notes, “Our taxes are lower. What we’re finding is that people who are coming from New York and New Jersey and some of these high tax states say, ‘My goodness, it is probably a quarter of what we’re used to paying; in some cases, a fifth.’ They’re cashing out of places like Westchester County in New York or even up in Arlington and Bethesda and Montgomery County and up into Baltimore, and they’re coming here.” “Another big reason they’re coming here—what makes this a great attraction for people in their 50s and 60s—is that it’s like grandpa and grandma having a place right on the ocean, the kids always want to come here. There is everything for them to do. We don’t have the problems other parents have with their children—there’s just too much to do, they’re too engaged. And we have no crime, we have our own police, our own fire department.” Snowbirds and thrill chasers, and tamer souls who prefer hot cider around a roaring fireplace all have two wonderful Shenandoah Valley resorts to visit come wintertime: exciting Wintergreen and exhilarating Massanutten.

PART OF THE CHARLOTTESVILLE Metropolitan Area—and only a short 35-miles from the heart of the city— idyllic Nelson County offers residents and visitors alike the opportunity to experience the beauty of the “great outdoors.” A welcome respite from the hustle-and-bustle of the city, Nelson’s 474 square-mile swath of land and water features a mountainous landscape, spectacular panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, access to George Washington National Forest and Wintergreen Resort, as well as a host of breweries, wineries and cideries. With all that Nelson County has to offer, it is no surprise that people choose to reside and vacation in this rural oasis.

History Current day Nelson County was originally part of Henrico County— one of the eight shires established In Virginia by the English during the first half of the 17th century. Over the next one-hundred plus years, the land was subsumed by various other counties until finally—in 1807—Nelson County was officially formed from Amherst County. Nelson gets its name from the third Governor of Virginia and signer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Nelson Jr.

An Ideal Place for the Outdoor Enthusiast Not surprisingly, bucolic Nelson is a favorite spot for individuals who long for the peace-and-quiet that communing with nature provides, as there are ample opportunities to do so in the county. Marlo Allen—REALTOR® with Mountain Area Realty—grew up in Nelson, and raised her family there. She has always loved the serenity that residing in the countryside allows, as well as the activities that living in a spectacular natural habitat provides. She explains, “The views and scenery are amazing, and there is an overall sense of calm. I grew up hiking on local trails, canoeing, swimming in the Rockfish River, and frolicking among the trees on the local blackberry farm. The area has something for everyone.”

Watersports and Fishing: The Rockfish River Located in northern Nelson County, the Rockfish River is a 28.7-mile-long tributary of the James, formed in the county by the confluence of its North and South Forks which rise in the Blue Ridge Mountains. A popular spot for swimming, floating, trout fishing and kayaking, the river is the perfect spot to spend languid, hot summer days.

Hiking Nelson County is a hiker’s paradise. Forty-five miles of the Appala-

chian Trail reside in the county, with hikes that offer rugged terrain, as well as landscapes that are more moderate. In addition to the Appalachian Trail, other popular hikes include the 5.3 mile hike through Fortune’s Cove Nature Preserve, the hike to Crabtree Falls—which features the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River (1,200 feet)—and the Humpback Rocks trail, which begins at the Humpback Gap parking area on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The elevation ascends rather quickly on this particular hike. Your reward for the steep climb? Spectacular 360-degree views of the valley below, from the vantage point of high, slanted rock outcroppings.

Skiing and Snowboarding: Wintergreen Resort The 10,800-acre Wintergreen Resort boasts 24 slopes and trails for advanced skiers, novices, and everyone in between. It is the only ski resort in

the area with two high-speed six pack chairlifts, and the resort has the capability to make snow quickly, if necessary. In the offseason, Wintergreen offers horseback riding, golf and tennis.

Wineries, Breweries, Cideries & Distilleries Nelson County is home to ten wineries, five craft breweries, two cideries, and two distilleries—making the area a favorite destination for oenophiles, beer aficionados, and connoisseurs of fine spirits. Visitors can sample a smattering of the county’s offerings along the Nelson 151 Trail; a popular picturesque byway that boasts spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as a number of wineries, distilleries, breweries—and even a meadery—along its route. There are also several restaurants along the way. Route 151 is the ideal place to sit back, relax and a enjoy a good drink, a gourmet meal, and stimulating conversation—with the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains as your backdrop!

The Real Estate Market According to Allen, Nelson County boasts a population of almost 15,000 full-time residents. The area is popular with families, and there is a robust second-home market. The county is particularly appealing for retirees, as the taxes are lower than in Northern Virginia and its environs. The area is also attractive to buyers due to the wide range of home prices; which Allen says start at less than $100,000, with several homes commanding up to more than a million dollars. The median price of a detached home in Nelson County currently stands at $293,500. The recent addition of high-quality fiber broadband in select areas of Nelson County has had a positive effect on the real estate market in the area, as Wi-Fi connectivity has significantly improved. Allen believes that as this network rolls out to Nelson’s more rural areas over the next five years, there will most certainly be a noticeable uptick in home sales. Nelson County is an ideal place to live, as well as visit. A mere 35-minutes or so from Charlottesville, the county offers both visitors and residents a host of opportunities to commune with nature—any time of the year. This—coupled with its relaxed pace—makes Nelson a slice of paradise in the heart of Central Virginia. Kristin is a writer originally from New York, now living in Nellysford, VA—in Nelson County.
