n July 4, 1776, in the city of Philadelphia, the Second Continental Congress of the thirteen American colonies issued a statement declaring their independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. A year later the city celebrated the first anniversary of this Declaration of Independence with a ceremonial dinner. There were speeches, toasts, and prayers, music and 13gun salutes, parades and troop reviews and, of course fireworks. Ships in the Philadelphia harbor were decked out in red, white, and blue bunting. What are you doing this Fourth of July? More than 70 people from around the world will celebrate this country’s independence in a once in a lifetime way at Monticello, by becoming American citizens. This Fourth falls on a Monday, which gives many
of us a nice three-day weekend. Here are some of the places and some of the ways we can remember and rejoice.
Albemarle County and Charlottesville Of all the inspirational places in Virginia to celebrate Independence Day, where better than Monticello, home of the original author of the Declaration of Independence, that stirring avowal to separate from the mother country and seek “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”? The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville, in conjunction with the Charlottesville Track Club and with major support from Better Living Inc., will present the 33nd Annual Independence Day 5K Race at 7:30 a.m. in the Forest Lakes North subdivision. This year the start/ finish line will be near Sutherland Middle School. Some of the area’s fastest 5K times are recorded at this race, which is expected to attract more than 250 runners of all ages. Over its three-decade history, the race has raised more than $110,000 for charity. For the eleventh straight year, race proceeds will benefit Camp Holiday Trails, a camp for children with special health needs. “Because of the long-time support of special friends such as the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville, the camp continues to empower, encourage, and educate campers with chronic illnesses,” said Tina LaRoche, CHT executive director. Carter Mountain Orchard will celebrate America’s Birthday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. with good old-fashioned family fun including hay rides, sack races, a three-legged race, a water balloon toss, a parade of bicycles decorated in patriotic colors, and a watermelon seed spitting contest. Food and drink including sweet cider, hard cider, and wine will be for sale, and live music will be heard throughout the day and evening. Scottsville may have only 550 or so residents, but its Fourth of July parade has been known to attract more than 1,500 visitors. This year’s parade steps off at 9:00 a.m. from James River Road (east) down Valley Street (Route 20) and on to East Main Street (Route 6), with the Scottsville Volunteer Fire Department in the lead. Period re-enactors will man a live cannon. Among the food and drink vendors will be Three Notch’d Brewing Company Beer Garden. Performances by the Greene County Singers, Orange Cloggers, and a Drum and Pipe Corps will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the festival will conclude with Stanardsville’s first ever community fireworks display, a half-hour after sunset.

istoric Greene County is conveniently located a short drive from Charlottesville across the Albemarle County line off of Route 29 North. Once part of Orange County, Greene became a separate entity in 1838 when it was named for Revolutionary War hero Nathaneal Greene. Today residents enjoy its beautiful mountain views, its multitude of outdoor activities and its rich history. They also appreciate their larger homes on bigger, more private lots than their money can buy closer in. For all of these reasons, Greene County attracts a range of happy buyers from those looking for their first house, to young couples needing more space for their growing families, to down sizers whose children are grown.
Greene’s Amenities Greene’s central location is a big plus offering, as it does, easy commutes to Charlottesville, Harrisonburg and Cul-

Homes under $300,000 are the strongest part of the Greene County market explained Matthew Woodson with Roy Wheeler Realty, Co. He agreed that Greene offers more value and options for first time buyers than are available elsewhere. The area also attracts downsizers in their late forties or older who no longer have children at home and want a smaller house. Woodson also sees retirees coming back to live in Greene after being away for much of their working life. In the past few years, many of the sales were to people like these who were relocating to Greene for whatever reason from
residents into the future, Yost said. In addition, Greene’s history, scenery and special events bring lots of tourists, some of whom eventually choose to live and work there full time. One such special event is the Annual Clay Festival in Stanardsville in September. This festival is the only one of its kind in Virginia and features local potters, sculptors and jewelers along with music, food and children’s activities.
