Performing Arts CELEBRATES 20 YEARS BY KEN WILSON

COOL WINDS, COOL MUSIC. Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County marks its 40th anniversary this year; Wintergreen Performing Arts marks its 20th. The 11,000-acre mountainside playground that hosts skiers, golfers and all manner of other sports enthusiasts all year ‘round draws music lovers every summer for a month-long

celebration of classical music and the arts featuring nationally and internationally known artists. This year’s Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy, with more than 200 events for the ear, eye, heart and mind, hits the hills from July 6 through August 2. The theme is “Cheers! Toast 20 Years of Music in the Mountains.”

New Festival Artistic Director Erin Freeman grew up in Atlanta but comes to the Festival from Richmond, where she directs the Richmond Symphony Chorus and serves as Director of Choral Activities at Virginia Commonwealth University. She’s thrilled to be making music on old familiar turf. “I grew up going to the Blue Ridge Moun-

tains with my family,” Freeman says. “We would go hiking and camping and I can’t tell you how many months I spent there. My summer camp was in the mountains, so I really love that area.” Having taken part in summer festivals in Aspen and elsewhere, “the idea of combining that sense of musical utopia with the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains seemed like the perfect fit for my upbringing and my personality.” Asked what she has planned for July 8, opening night of the 20th anniversary season, Freeman just laughs: “It’s a secret!” she says, a Surprise Birthday Party with Wintergreen Festival artists and special guests reprising favorite performances and “telling the story of the organization from the very beginning to its future.” It was while she was out with her running team just after accepting her new position, Freeman remembers, when the idea for the program came to her. She mentioned her appointment

Music in Unusual Places Not so long ago, most classical music concerts were strictly formal: dress

up affairs in stately venues where a somewhat stuffy decorum was de rigueur. Wild Wednesdays As part of Wintergreen’s popular Wild Wednesday series, on Wednesday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m., Richmond favorites John Winn and Desirée Roots will celebrate Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday, two giants of 20th century song. “Sinatra was certainly the greatest ‘pop’ singer of his generation and most definitely signaled a further evolution of pop singing toward jazz inflection and swing feeling that was a paramount feature of black music in the early 20th century,” Winn says. “It is almost a cliche among jazz-oriented singers that if you want to learn how

to sing a melody well, you should listen to Sinatra first. What Billie Holiday taught singers is how to make a song or melody your own, how to turn it into a unique expression of yours as the performer that might in some cases, supersede the songwriters’ original ideas. I’d venture that a majority of older jazz musicians claimed Billie Holiday as their favorite singer. Sinatra said she was an early influence on him mainly for the emotion she brought to the songs she sang.”

Then we’re going to do the Cat Duet and the text is what you would expect, just the word meow.’ Then selections from his Petite messe solennelle from 1863. For a musician it’s a hilarious piece – it has a little bit of his operatic style. You get a comedic sense of musical timing, but it’s in the very serious format of a mass.” Rossini’s wit comes through in the work’s title (the mass is neither little nor solemn) and in his specification, coming after castration for musical purposes had been banned, that “twelve singers of three sexes – men, women and castrati – will be enough

Whether you are planning new construction or replacing an existing entry, choosing a front door offers a wonderful opportunity to reflect your home’s personality. With the many options for an entry door, the choices can be overwhelming. Do you prefer rustic or elegant? Rectangular or arched? Wood or steel? Craftsman or modern? Hand carved? Double doors? And what about glass? While glass inserts add to the cost, they are attractive from the outside and bring in light. “Designs include frosted, etched, beveled, even antique glass reproduction applications,” Greenfield says. Do you want side windows (called sidelights), a transom over the door, or a surround transom? Clear, beveled, colored, or obscure glass? The next thing to consider is the material. “Exterior doors can be made of all types of fiberglass, metal, or wood, and may be solid or have hollow or insulated cores,” Greenfield continues. If you are eco-conscious, you may choose an EnergyStar door that has been independently tested and certified. It might have double- or even triple-paned glass and an energy-efficient core. About half of all entry doors sold are steel. It’s relatively inexpensive, yet provides the security of more expensive doors. Steel doors generally have energy-efficient foam cores and are resistant to shrinking or swelling with the weather. They are typically low maintenance, although the almost inevitable dents and scratches are harder to repair than with fiberglass or wood. If they are not painted properly, they may rust. “Whether it is solid or wood clad,” Greenfield observes, “a wood door can be beautifully and artfully carved, or factory made with or without glass.” Although wooden doors generally have less insulating value than steel or fiberglass, they remain the standard and steel or fiberglass doors are often designed to imitate wood. Solid wood doors are best at resisting wear and tear since they don’t dent like steel and scratches are easily repaired. They can be created from a variety of woods and painted or stained to blend or contrast with the house. On the other hand, wood doors are often the most expensive and require occasional repainting or varnishing. Fiberglass is a popular, moderately priced option because it resists wear and tear and requires little maintenance. Fiberglass often comes with an

embossed or molded-in appearance that looks like wood. Such doors resist dents and scratches and can be painted or stained. Fiberglass doors offer the same energy-saving and easy-installation qualities as steel doors.

Buying The Door Doors are often sold as “door systems” with the door actually pre-hung in the frame that will be built into the existing wall. The system might include only the door—often predrilled for the doorknob and lock system—or it might include sidelights and/or a transom. To find a door you like, visit model homes and stores that sell doors. Decide whether you want the door to open from the right or the left and what style and material you prefer. These days, it’s virtually impossible for any door seller—whether a specific manufacturer or a home improvement center—to have every door model and size in stock. In fact, most manufacturers and retailers of doors have websites with photos and specifications of their products. (For example, one website boasts 40,000 wooden doors in stock with a searchable inventory of seemingly endless styles.)

Door systems are heavy and unless you are experienced, it’s best to have professional installation. “Doors need to be properly installed and balanced with no room for air leakage,” Greenfield points out. “Secure locking features range from deadbolt locks to innovative electronic and smart phone applications that trigger locking and unlocking mechanisms from remote locations.” Greenfield points out that whatever the door is made of, it will need occasional maintenance or repair to the surface, locks, handles, and glass. “Some simple weather-stripping will allow less heat and humidity into the home in summer and keep the cold out in winter.” However you select your door, take your time and be sure you’re happy with the way it presents your home’s personality to the world. “It’s so nice to walk through a front door that is a symbol of artistic creativity,” concludes Greenfield. “A house is a home when one adds creative design and thoughtful intention.” n Marilyn Pribus and her husband live near Charlottesville.
