ABBA AGED ANIMAL MORATORIUM TAKING PLACE NOW-MAY 31

MAY ABBA COMMITTEE & BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS

The ABBA is offering an Aged Animal Moratorium for members to register animals over 24 months of age for $50. The fee is half of the regular charge to register these animals.

The next ABBA Committee and Board of Directors Meetings are to be held May 5-6, 2017 at the Texas A&M Agrilife Research Center in Overton, Texas. A Research and Performance Seminar will be held Friday, May 5 at 9 AM. Everyone is invited to attend this event, which will focus on an overview of our Research and Performance efforts and ways to improve the program. The ABBA Executive Committee meeting will take place that same evening at 5 PM. Committee Meetings take place Saturday, May 6 from 8 to noon with the ABBA Board of Directors lunch and meeting to follow. All meetings are scheduled to take place at the Texas A&M Agrilife Research Center in Overton, Texas. The Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites Kilgore has been selected as the headquarter hotel. There is a special group rate of $100 per night, plus tax. Make reservations by calling direct at 903-986-3533. Be sure to ask for the American Brahman Breeders block of rooms.

DNA PARENT VERIFICATION REMINDERS: Effective January 1, 2017 ALL embryo transfer animals MUST be DNA Parent Verified before they can be registered. This means that the sire and dam must already be on file and then the calf to be registered must have had a sample submitted and the confirmed results must be submitted with the application for registration. The ABBA now has the forms for both approved labs on their website. You can contact the ABBA Office and request kits and then complete the form at your leisure.

Houston’s Success!!!

As we wind down from the hustle and bustle that is the Houston Livestock Show, we have to realize how blessed we really are! What an amazing week it was for us at England Cattle co. We had two reserve divisions with our females ECC LMC LF Polled LOLO 127/4 and ECC Polled Corrine 595. Both of these fantastic females are coming out of our bull, LMC Polled Authority 115/0, a son of LMC LF Ambassador 700/7 and Miss Double A 275/5, coming from the Acevedo herd. He has been the most consistent polled producer that we own to date. He has consistently produced amazing females and bulls with lots of bone depth and spring of rib. We have loved them so much that we have not let very many out of our hands.This year we will be offering a select few of our calves out of him. Feel free to come and take a look we always look forward to visitors! We also had a Class Winner with our red bull ECC Rio King 424, a son of BB Stingray. He combines the power of his sire and the performance of his dam, a Forgason Cattle Co. bred cow. What an amazing herd sire he has become. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that came by to visit and look forward to the future of raising great POLLED cattle!

INTERNATIONAL BRAHMAN SALE On the evening of March 8, breeders from around the globe gathered for the prestigious American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) International Brahman Sale.

This year’s event was held in the NRG Centers’ upstairs rooms instead of the Sale Pavillion and used a video display from Cattle In Motion rather than running live cattle through the ring. Chris Shivers, the retiring executive vice president of the ABBA said, “The 2017 ABBA International Brahman Sale was a huge success with 12 lots being purchased by breeders from Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The solid sale average and active bidding verified a continued demand for elite Brahman genetics. She sold for $19,000 to Chuck Sellman from Weslaco, Texas. A flush out of her dam LMC POLLED PASSION 55/4 (P) sold as lot 4 for $10,000. Lot 1 was the 2017 Foundation Female. This cherry red September heifer was consigned by Ken Ramsey Brahmans of Cat Spring, Texas. The buyer was former AJBA Member Adrian Land, II, of L2 Ranch in Branford, Florida. He purchased the lot for $6,000, with proceeds going to the American Junior Brahman Association to assist with their many programs.

The sale had a total of 12 lots sold, totaling $115,000. The sale average on 10 live lots was $8,800. One lot of six embryos had a sale average of $2,833/embryo. The sale average on one flush was $10,000.

In addition to the female sale, there were 11 semen lots sold. The semen lots were donated by Brahman breeders and all proceeds went to the ABBA Research and Breed Improvement Committee to conduct research programs to improve the breed. The 11 lots grossed $10,000. A package of five straws of semen and 10 certificates donated by Kempfer Cattle Company was the high selling semen lot at $450 per straw.

Howdy y’all, my name is Kayla Mason. I am 16 years old and a junior at Gonzales High School. I am the middle child of David and Leanne Mason; I have an older sister, Morgan, and a younger brother, Matthew. I am from Gonzales, Texas, which is known most famous for the phrase “Come and Take lt”. I am involved in the FFA, 4-H, Future Scientists and the National Honor Society. My family has owned and operated a small commercial cattle operation for 20 years, which consists of Hereford cows and Brahman bulls, and now, we have a small herd of Brahman cattle. While maintaining this small operation, we raise chickens for Tyson Foods, lnc. We have eight chicken houses and are in the process of building four more. I started showing Brahman cattle when I was 11 years old, and I’ve been hooked ever since. As well as being an AJBA director, I am also in my third year serving as a director for the Texas Junior Brahman Association. I enjoy every aspect of being on the board of directors – planning activities, organizing events and working the ring at the shows. While being involved in these great organizations, I’ve become a better speaker, learned more about the cattle industry as a whole and have made lifelong memories. Showing cattle is hard work, early mornings and late nights, but the experiences and the friendships that are made highlight all the hard work I’ve put in.

I’m very thankful for the opportunity to serve on the AJBA board of directors, and I am very humbled and appreciative to have been chosen to help lead and represent this great association. I would like to encourage any juniors that are interested to become a member of AJBA. There are countless opportunities available. RGV STEER SHOW & SHOWMANSHIP CLINIC/SHOW The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Steer Show was held March 16 in Mercedes, Texas. “The RGV Brahman and F-1 Association once again invested over $5,000 in premiums for all of the exhibitors in this show,” RGV Brahman and F-1 Association President Mike England said. “This was the fifth year for the registered Brahman steer show, which has created lots of interest for the Brahman breed due to the muscle shape, finish and disposition of the steers shown.” Carlos X. Guerra III, known as “Pops” from the Linn San Manuel 4-H Club, won Grand Champion with his 1,370 pound Polled son of MR V8 279/7 (P). The steer was bred by Louie Flores of 4F Cattle Co. The Reserve Champion weighed 1,305 pounds and was exhibited by Ariana Pena of Mission FFA. The steer was bred by Beto Salinas, longtime mayor of Mission, Texas.

The RGV association also held its Annual Showmanship Clinic and Show on March 14 with more than 35 junior participants. It was judged by Eddie Garcia. “Our next two events will be our Annual $6,000 RGV Brahman & F-1 Association Bull & Heifer Futurity held in conjunction with the LMC $ellabration at La Muneca Ranch where half of the premiums are awarded in showmanship,” said Carlos X. Guerra Jr., Vice President of the RGV Brahman Association.
