BUYING HERD BULLS by Will Detering

In this article I want to discuss two simple but critical areas....breed character and pedigree. It’s a touchy subject but one that needs to be covered. To many of you, these are the fundamental basics, but to others it’s something new and not to be overlooked. I am always asked by people, “Is he a good bull?” and that is such a difficult question and truly the decision of the breeder. Although there are structural and other issues to consider, as I have already discussed in my earlier articles, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. So what’s “good” to you might not be “good” to the next breeder. I tell visitors regularly two things. Breed what you like and promote what you love. If you like long eared speckled cattle, breed and promote those. It’s a big world and there is a market for just about everything. If you love it, so will your customers. With that said, let’s talk about breed character. What is breed character? Breed character reflects the purity of an animal’s heritage. Breed character is important in all breeds and Brahmans are no exception. I will not discuss breed character in detail, as the ABBA Standard of Excellence extensively covers this topic and can be found on the ABBA website. Today I focus on two main aspects of breed character. Hump and pigment. You want a “full” hump, with the placement straight and over the shoulders in a vertical straight line with the center of the front leg. I have found that a wider, broad hump usually indicates more natural muscling. But here is a word of caution, sometimes perceived extra length of an animal is really just a hump that is too far up on its neck. Concerning pigment, dark pigment in the feet, nose and tail is critical. Many times cattle with white coats or a lot of speckling are considered light pigmented when they are not. Hair color and pigment are two completely different things. The skin can be well-pigmented and the hair color light or even white. These two things are simple enough but are just more things to keep in mind when selecting that prospect. On to pedigree! There’s nothing more irritating, nor discouraging, to a new breeder than not being able to

10

| The Brahman Journal

reproduce the qualities that were sought for when they selected their herd sire. To this end, pedigree comes into play. How often do we pick a good animal and pay little concern to the “interaction” within the pedigree of that animal. I’m a bull

I’m a COW

You know the sire is good and you know the dam is good of your prospect. But if they are not related in anyway then your prospect is a hybrid cross. With hybrid crosses your predictability goes way down. So the pedigree of both parents should be strongly considered when selecting a herd bull prospect. Special attention should be considered for whether you want the resulting offspring to be linebred or an outcross hybrid. I know these are controversial words, but hybrids won’t breed as true as linebred animals. Hybrids can many times be phenotypically superior to linebred, but will they reproduce themselves? If you are considering two bulls with equal quality and one is linebred and the other is a hybrid, go with the linebred bull. He will typically breed “truer” in reproducing himself! It is a common thing today to breed reds and greys to each other and we all know the phenomenal show ring results, but be careful! Breeding cattle is a lot more difficult than crossing them. Predictability is what we are shooting for in breeding cattle, not just show ring winners. It has been my experience over the years that the closer in pedigree the sire and dam are, the more predictable the resulting offspring. That is not to say that new lines and genes are not welcome in breeding programs, but it is a long term process. Cy Yokum, the founder of Cherokee Ranch, said that a drop of new blood should constantly be introduced and evaluated. So, be careful in your choices for a herd bull and look at the pedigree. With linebreeding comes uniformity, consistency and predictability, while I have found the opposite tends to hold true with outcrossing.

2014 World Brahman Congress and Tour – DR. JOE C. PASCHAL

Livestock Specialist, Corpus Christi, TX Texas A&M AgriLife Extension

My presence at the 2014 World Brahman Congress in Parys, South Africa, actually began about a half a world away and six months earlier when I was invited to speak at the 2013 World Brahman Assembly in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Mr. Wessel Hattig, the Vice-President of the Brahman Cattle Breeder’s Society and Convener of the Congress, was also a speaker at the Assembly. After my presentation there he asked if I would also present at the Congress. In my travels over the past 35 years, extensive to some, not so much to others, I have had the opportunity to visit the continent of Africa twice – both offers I turned down either due to unrest or scheduling, so when Wessel made his generous offer I was ecstatic! I was accompanied by my wife Vickey, as well as a number of American Brahman breeders and a few Brahman Journal staff members. For those of you who have made the trip, you know it is a long flight, especially if you are in economy or “cattle class”. The flight is made in the evening and most people will sleep through most of it, but I like to read so that is how I passed the time. We landed the next evening, we had added 6 hours in time zones to a 15 hours flight, and loaded a bus for the 100 km drive to Parys. In my reading I learned that the location of Parys reminded the German who founded the town of Paris, France. The Vaal River reminding him of the Seine. The pronunciation and spelling is Afrikaans, the principal language spoken by the Boers (Dutch for farmers) who settled in that area. Our lodgings were unique; they were in appearance similar to the many African tribal huts, but much larger and quite modern inside, with thatched roofs. One thing I learned right away was that South Africa uses an electrical plug that is configured differently than in the Americas. Needless to say curling irons, computers and cell phones could not be used or charged without an adaptor! The first day, while most of our folks went to see the meteor crater that struck the area about 2 billion years ago, Chris Shivers and I attended the Genetic Evaluation and Genomics meeting. We listened to several speakers discuss their performance testing programs and heard an update on a proposal to share genomic information to enhance genomic EPD prediction. These programs should improve the testing

accuracy, especially in young bulls. There was also a lot of discussion of physical or phenotypic classification or scoring systems, similar to the calving ease score that other associations were interested in turning into EPDs. Some of those had merit for the systems of production they represented, but may be of little use here in the US. Later that day Chris, Kasey and I went to the location of the show, the Afri Dome. The Dome was not a dome but a huge elegant exhibition building, originally designed to host equine events. For the World Brahman Show it was converted half into show ring and half into an entertainment venue, and the South Africans SURE CAN entertain! The stalling area was packed full of very good quality Gray and Red Brahman genetics with pedigree and performance information posted with every animal. After Chris set up the ABBA display we went to look at the cattle in the stalling area. We met several breeders and I was very impressed with the quality of the cattle. I realized that there is a lot of US influence in the Brahman cattle in South Africa. While you can send the best genetics anywhere, you can still not have the quality of cattle I saw without selection and management. That night they had an impressive sale. In between lots I was trying to keep up with the sale price by converting the sale price in Rand, the official currency of South Africa, into US dollars. The next morning was the official opening of the 2014 World Brahman Congress and it started naturally enough with the South African national anthem and a prayer. Actually it was more like a sermon about a passage from the bible on Cain and Able. Anyway it caused me to remember it, so I guess it worked. Because all the buildings were thatched we also had an official explain what the fire alarm was and what to do when it sounded. It was a unique experience to say the least! The first speaker was an economist from the ABSA Bank, Ernst Janovsky, who talked about the economy of various countries on the continent and said that South Africa was one of the four strongest, the others being Egypt, Liberia and Nigeria. He went on to explain that South Africa’s main weakness was in energy. However he indicated the future looks good for South Africa if they can ease their credit crunch. “Trip of a Lifetime” continued on page 18 br ahmanjournal . com

Other speakers spoke on the importance of genetic improvement for commercial producers and opportunities for beef production in developing countries, measurements of feed efficiency, the cause and effects of heat tolerance in Zebu cattle, improving fertility in Bos indicus cattle, genetic improvement of South African Brahman cattle and genomically enhanced breeding values. All the presentations were very interesting and many of the slides and pictures of the event are posted on the Brahman Society of South Africa’s webpage. I would encourage you to go look them over. In my presentation I spoke about the benefits of crossbreeding and reviewed some of the Brahman research done at Texas A&M University, Dr. Franke’s work at LSU, and research conducted at Mississippi State University, IFAS and the USDA Research Station in Brooksville, Florida. I also covered the percentage Brahman performance from the TAMU Ranch to Rail Program, as well as the ABBA Carcass Merit Program. The information on carcass merit and tenderness was of the most interest to the Congress since most associations do not have the resources of ABBA to conduct long term research on feedyard performance, carcass merit and tenderness. My presentation showed up this month in the May 2014 edition of Agriforum, Namibia’s agricultural magazine. After the Congress the Brahman show began and ran for two days. As I have said previously, there were a lot of really high quality cattle. I watched and took pictures but mostly I visited with breeders or our own folks. I even picked up a really nice book,“The Intelligent Choice – Brahman - 50 Years in South Africa,” to add to my collection of books on livestock breeds. We had earlier received in our registration packet a book entitled “The Namibian Brahman 1954” published by the Namibian Brahman Breeder’s Society. Both are excellent books that relate stories from the first Brahman breeders in these two countries, as Brahmans came to both countries in 1954 and carry on to the present. A funny story ought to be told here, I was browsing the Afrikaans version of the book at the South African’s Brahman Breeders Society booth and was in the process of paying for it thinking it was only in that language. I thought that I could at least look at the pictures and interpret a few words when the nice sales lady offered me one in English. The funny part was that they were right next to each other! At the end of the show on Thursday night the Congress organizers had a fantastic evening of entertainment and excellent food. Come to think of it, every meal and every evening during this trip was full of good food and great entertainment. The history of the breed in South Africa was revisited and winners of the show and performance tests were announced and feted and even the oldest breeders were recognized. It was truly a gala evening and a fitting close to the official Congress events. Little did I realize that the next day would be the other half of the trip of a lifetime when most of our little group spent a week riding 3500 km, almost 2200 miles, in a bus visiting several Gray and Red Brahman breeders and seeing some of the finest Brahman cattle I have seen anywhere in the world, outside the US of course! LOOK TO NEXT MONTH’S ISSUE OF THE BRAHMAN JOURNAL TO LEARN ABOUT DR. PASCHAL’S ADVENTURES ON THE WBC TOUR!

RGV F-1 & STBA Brahman Association Field Day A Big Success

Linn, TX - The Rio Grande Valley Brahman & F-1 (RGV) and the South Texas Brahman (STBA) Associations recently combined their efforts on May 3rd and held a field day at La Muneca Ranch, hosted by Carlos X. Guerra. “Our goals were to raise money for both Association’s scholarship funds plus have an educational, inspiring, and fun event with plenty of South Texas Brahman camaraderie,” explained Carlos X. Guerra. “We are proud to report that all our goals were met.”

Dedication of field day to Donna Schneider by the ABBA, RGV and STBA Associations.

Over 140 new Brahman breeders, juniors and older breeders, like 94 year old Bill Duderstadt, were in attendance and enjoyed the day. The Field Day was dedicated to longtime STBA member and Brahman breeder, Donna Schneider. There was no shortage of experts talking about everything from the history and future of the industry, the importance of carcass merit, the do’s and don’ts of the show ring to thinking outside the box (by increasing the demand for all American cattle) and social media marketing. The breed associations (RGV, STBA, and ABBA) sent representatives to discuss the services and programs available to their members. “The information presented today was educational and valuable enabling the participants to keep current with breed and industry standards,” stated attendee and Brahman Journal representative Clint Galiano. RGV Brahman & F-1 Association member Israel Davila donated a registered Brahman heifer that raised $5,200 for scholarships at the RGV show. Newt Huffman, owner of La Reina Cattle, was the lucky winner of the heifer. Another heifer was donated that raised $10,400 for both association’s scholarship funds by the England, Flores and Guerra families. There were 104 chances sold for $100 each. Long-time STBA member Diane Hartman won the heifer. The traditional silent auction also raised over $3,000.

International Brahman Symposium

The Florida Brahman Association, in conjunction with the American Brahman Breeders Association and the Florida Department of Agriculture, held an International Brahman Symposium April 8th through the 11th. The event was the first of its kind and was offered free to all participants.

gone across the scales. Our customers benefit from our hard selection process, as fertility is a trait that a cow will pass along to her sons and daughters. When we sell bulls to our customers they appreciate how hard we cull our cattle because they benefit from our stringent selection process.”

The group was made up of mostly international participants with a few attendees from the states. The symposium started in Miami with a welcome supper held at the Mary Abreu Community Center in the Tropical Park. The following day everyone boarded a luxury bus where they toured through the central part of Florida. The participants visited ranches and attended educational conferences for the next few days. The symposium ended where it began at the Tropical Park in Miami where the Miami International Agricultural and Cattle Show was just getting underway. The final day of the symposium ended with another educational seminar and a luncheon.

At the end of the tour at the Kempfer ranch attendees were greeted by Drew Tucker of TA Brahmans. Drew had hauled a few Brahmans over and the group enjoyed getting in the pen and getting close to the gentle Brahman heifers and bulls.

The first day of the symposium dawned to a bright blue sky with slightly lower temperatures. Just right for starting the journey to visit Brahman ranches in the heart of Florida. The first stop was at Kempfer Cattle Company in Deer Park, Florida where attendees were greeted by George Kempfer, his brothers Henry and Bear Kempfer and the patriarch of the family, Billy Kempfer. The approximately 25,000 acre ranch is a true working ranch, where the cattle are mostly worked from horseback. During the symposium there was not time to watch the cattle being worked by cowboys on horseback, so the group loaded up into trucks and set off throughout the pastures. Participants were driven to a number of different pastures and were given the opportunity to see the registered Brahmans as well as the commercial cattle. The cattle looked great and George explained the importance in their breeding program of raising cattle for fertility and ease of birthing. “We expect our first calf heifers to reproduce at around 24 months,” explained George Kempfer to the group. “We select which cows will stay in the registered Brahman herd on a number of criteria, but we really think fertility is very important. If you have a cow that is having a calf every year then she is productive and an asset in your herd. The cows in our commercial herd will also have a calf every year. We do give them one chance to miss, but if they miss the following year that cow is no longer in our herd, but rather has

“I knew the group was on a tight schedule and would not have the chance to come visit our ranch”, explained Drew Tucker. “We wanted to let the group see as many Brahman cattle while they were on their tour. Our cattle are known for how gentle they are and this would give everyone another chance to get up close to some Florida Brahman cattle. Our cattle are known for their femininity, fertility, low birth weights and tenderness and like most of the breeders in Florida we focus on those traits, as well as docility.” Next stop for the symposium bus was just up the road to Kenansville, Florida to the Chapman family’s ranch, Double C Bar Ranch. After calimbing on board a large hay wagon the group was given a tour of the ranch by Jimmy Chapman and his son Gibbs. Everyone had an opportunity to see some great registered Brahman cattle. “We feel like much of Central and South America is similar to our climate in Florida”, said Jimmy Chapman. “We are a sub-tropical climate with similar forages. Many of the visitors at the symposium definitely saw that similarity. Our soils are not as rich as out west or maybe even in the other countries. We have to rely on volume of forages rather than quality. As a result, we have to have much more capacity in our cattle than other regions. We also strive for more moderation in frame size. Many times we talk moderate frame and hear that term in other areas of the U.S., but that term is a relative term that is used differently outside of Florida. We think the type cattle we have here is more the type that will thrive in the other countries. We also do not have the grains available and the freight to get them here is extremely high. I definitely think there is a place for the show ring and it has been good for the Brahman breed, but, it has also hurt us by selection for that type cattle rather than the productive traits that make a cow do better in the pasture.” Back to the bus and then a quick stop at

Doc Partin Ranch where Ricky Booth, Florida Brahman Association president greeted the group and discussed the rest of the evenings activities. After a short drive the group arrived at the last stop of the evening, Kissimmee, home of the Florida Cattleman’s Association office. After checking into the evening’s hotel the group went just around the corner to the beautiful offices of the Florida Cattleman’s Association where they were treated to a fabulous steak dinner.

The dinner was hosted by the Osceola County Cattlemen’s Association and Osceola County Farm Bureau. Martha Booth and her daughter Ashley Booth Fluke, University of Florida Osceola County Livestock Extension Agent, did a great job preparing the meal. After the meal it was time to get back to Brahman business as Ricky Booth introduced the two speakers for the evening, Dr. Todd Thrift of the University of Florida and Renee Strickland of Strickland Ranch. Ricky gave a short anecdotal speech about cattle breeders in Florida and then it was time to be educated by Dr. Thrift about frame size of cattle and its effect on efficiency. Thrift’s thought-provoking presentation was followed by a very informative presentation by Renee Strickland about the insand-outs of exporting livestock. Dr. Thrift gave a detailed presentation of where the cattle industry has been from breeding cattle that were too large and consequently are costly to feed, to breeding cattle that are too small and are subsequently not productive, finally to the point where breeders are breeding more moderate size cattle that will be cost effective and productive. Thrift stressed that a good ranch manager must evaluate many management alternatives and adjust the program based on the current situation in each herd and the environment of the herd. Strickland’s presentation about the exportation of livestock covered a variety of types of livestock, as well as the two main transportation methods of exportation by boat or aircraft. As she explained there are pros and cons to either one of these methods and a person must decide which method would be best for their personal situation. She answered very specific questions about transporting cattle, horses and even equipment, such as trucks and trailers. The second full day of symposium events dawned and turned out to be yet again another great day to view Brahman cattle. The group was looking forward to the trip as they headed to Barthle Brothers

International Brahman Symposium

Ranch where they would see Brahman cattle and some very nice American Quarter Horses also. Larry Barthle is the Chairman of the ABBA International committee and he was on hand with his family ready to take the group on a tour of their beautiful ranch which has been in the family since the 1930’s. Everyone climbed aboard the hay wagon to be driven through the ranch, which while it is picturesque, is a real working ranch. It is no wonder that the Barthle family know Brahman cattle, since they have been raising Brahman cattle on the ranch since 1942.

“The first Brahman cattle came to the ranch in 1942,” explained Larry. “The family originally ran native Florida cattle after they first fenced the ranch and in the forties they bought a set of cattle that had two Brahman bulls in them. They fell in love with the calves and we have been raising Brahman cattle ever since.” When the hay wagon would stop everyone would climb off the wagon and walk through the Brahman cattle. All the cattle were very quiet to be around and numerous photos were taken. As the wagons wound through the ranch the tour finished with a visit to the horse pasture and the “bull pen”. The Barthle family stand a stallion that is an own son of Freckles Playboy, who as horse aficionados will know produced offspring that earned $24.56 million in NCHA competition. The mares and babies were looking great and everyone on the tour were familiar with the famous bloodlines of the Barthle horses.

First stop for the Symposium Bus was Kempfer Cattle Co.

The tour’s final stop was at Moreno Ranches

Ruben Abella, Chris Denmark & Liz Gablehouse

Larry Barthle and Senator Souto

Finishing at the “bull pen” participants viewed a pen full of yearling Brahman bulls that were either sold or were in the process of getting sold private treaty. Brahman bulls are very popular in Florida and a commodity that does not stay around a ranch long. “Our registered Brahman cattle are selected for traits that are useful for the beef industry,” explained Larry Barthle. “We strive to produce moderate framed, structurally sound, efficient Brahman cattle. Our pastures in Central Florida are very similar to the land in Central America and northern South America, so Florida Brahman cattle work well all over the world.”

Elena Carmargo and Jose Luis Cardona

After receiving some great custom embroidered Barthle Brothers caps it was time to get back to the buses . Everyone loaded up for the final leg of the trip back to Miami. First stop would be at Marcus Shackelford’s Rocking S Ranch and then the final stop was to visit Kelvin Moreno at Moreno Ranches before heading back to Miami. Marcus Shackelford is a past President of the ABBA and is well known for being an authority on not only the history of Brahman cattle, but also on pedigrees of Brahman cattle. Shackelford had his cattle penned and ready for everyone to see them. All his Brahman calves looked great and everyone commented on how good his cows look, especially after he explained the age of some of his cows. “Symposium” continued on page 40

“Symposium” continued from 39 “Brahman cows are known for the longevity as mothers,” expressed Shackelford. “Our cattle here in Florida have to be productive. If your cow is not having a calf every year than she is reducing the productivity of your herd.” Last stop before the return to Miami was Moreno Ranches where Kelvin Moreno was getting ready for a sale the following weekend. Moreno gave a tour of his facility which included his show barn, reproduction facilities, offices, and sale barn. The consummate hosts the Moreno family served refreshments, gave out T-shirts and sale catalogs. Kelvin walked everyone around the cattle that were being prepared for the sale the following week and everyone enjoyed the visit. After spending the night in Miami the final day of the symposium ended where it began at the Tropical Park in the beautiful Mary Abreu Community Center building. On hand was Senator Javier Souto, who is a huge proponent of Brahman cattle and of course Miami. He has a significant role in promoting the Miami International Agriculture and Cattle Show and understands the importance of agriculture to the Florida economy. After a short speech by Souto the final seminar got underway. There were numerous Florida Brahman breeders, as well as symposium participants in attendance to watch a presentation by Dr. David Husfeld on what to look for from a conformation standpoint in Brahman cattle.

Getting ready to see the cattle at Barthle Brothers Ranch

Husfeld emphasized the importance of structural correctness in Brahman cattle so they can do their job, which is to reproduce and thrive in challenging environments such as the tropics. Husfeld’s presentation was very interesting and extremely informative with the breeders asking numerous questions at the end of the session. The first International Symposium was a definite success. Everyone had a great time learning more about Brahman cattle and their importance to the beef industry world-wide.

The group at Jimmy Chapman’s Double C Bar Ranch

Typical Florida sunshine was the weather of the day as the Booths welcomed over 275 Brahman breeders, ranchers, and guests. Breakfast was served and guests enjoyed the shade under the large live oak trees. One of the highlights of this event every year is the showmanship contest. This year there were 30 Florida Junior Brahman Association members, or prospective members, who displayed their showmanship skills. The interesting twist on this contest is the sale heifers that will sell later in the day are the cattle that are used for the contest. The Florida Brahman Association awarded a custom buckle to each division champion of the showmanship contest and The Brahman Journal had prizes on hand for each participant. Before the sale the FJBA members met and selected their new officers. They also announced the results of the Princess and Queen contest. This year’s FJBA Princess is Olivia Davis and the FJBA Queen is Natalie Trimble. For lunch a delicious ribeye steak was grilled by Ed Partin and Billy Kempfer, while the Booth, Kempfer and Partin families

prepared the tasty sides of potato salad, banana pudding and other treats. After everyone had their fill it was time to sell some nice Brahman heifers. Ricky Booth introduced the auctioneer and the interested crowd of spirited bidders competed to buy one of the fifteen haltered show-quality heifers that were in the auction. The top high-selling heifer was VBE Ms Doc Emp Esto 394 consigned by Valley B Enterprises and purchased by H & S Cattle of Bartow, Florida; the second high seller was FF Miss Ruben Star 314 consigned by Ford Farms and purchased by the Jason McMullen family; the third high selling heifer was Miss L2 Sugar Heart 34 consigned by L2 Ranch and purchased by Jay Sizemore of Plant City. L2 Ranch had also donated a special lot to the FJBA, where all proceeds would go towards travel expenses for members of the FJBA to attend this year’s All American Show. This heifer sold to a group of buyers who donated the heifer back to be resold. Miss L2 76 sold the second time to Excel Cattle Company of Arcadia. The Florida Brahman Association thanked the Land family for this kind donation which raised money for the FJBA members to travel to Louisiana for the All American. The Fifteen haltered heifers averaged $4,870.00. The 2015 FBA Field Day and Heifer Sale will be hosted by the Junior Lanier family of Okeechobee.

He also enjoyed listening to all kinds of music, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was a man with a big heart and contagious smile. Dr. Omar had a family practice in Edinburg, Texas for most of his adult life. He was also a member of several civic and community affairs which included being the former president of Edinburg School Board, the past director of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, past member of Texas State Board of Education, Past president of Edinburg Hospital medical staff, Past chief of staff of the Edinburg Hospital OB-GYN Department, Past director of Hidalgo Savings and Loan Association, Member of El Cid Caravan, Order of the Alhambra organization, member of The Hidalgo County Historical Museum, Past Chairman of the Edinburg Golf Course, and member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Hidalgo County Sheriff Posse Arena. A rosary was held at 7 PM on May 8th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Edinburg with the Funeral mass at 10 AM on May 9th also at St. Joseph’s with the burial to follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen. Dr. Omar is survived by the love of his life Dora, who he was married to for 60 years, five children, nine grand children, three great grand children, two brothers and one sister plus several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Building Fund c/o Sister Guerra, P.O. Box 81, Linn, TX 78563.
