Our History Santa Elena Ranch was established in 1957 by the late Vicente R. Lecuna with the purchase of 987 acres in Houston County, Texas and 250 registered Red Brahman cattle from the Fondren Estate herd. During the first ten years of operation, all cattle, with the exception of herd replacements, were sent to Venezuela. Many of these animals were used to establish Lecuna's renowned Red Brahman herd in Venezuela. In 1959, the ranch official became a member the American Brahman Breeder’s Association.
From 1960s to the 1980s, Santa Elena Ranch grew to 2,700 acres and the number of mother cows increased to more than 450, all from ranch production. Until 1987, the only outside females brought into the herd were six heifers purchased in 1961 from the C.E. Yoakum herd. Santa Elena Ranch’s foundation herd, purchased from the Fondrens, was developed through the use of primarily Estrelo and Arauto bloodlines. Later, Manso-influenced bulls were added to the herd and the resulting conformation is still evident today. In 1970, Santa Elena Ranch made the VL branded cattle available to Brahman breeders and commercial cattlemen in the United States. Since that time, the ranch has enjoyed a reputation of producing honest breeding cattle of high quality and beefy conformation that are a powerful influence to a registered herd or commercial cattle operation. From the beginning, beef conformation and a dark uniform red color were of prime importance in the Santa Elena’s breeding program. Much of the herd's breeding progress is attributed to late Steve Allen, who served as ranch manager for 27 years. Many years of selective breeding were implemented to develop a herd of quality, productive, beef type American Red Brahmans. The ranch also runs commercial cattle, many of which are sired by Red Brahman bulls. Cattlemen are continually impressed with the gains these cattle achieve and the carcasses they hang. Santa Elena recognizes that their cattle must work for all segments of the industry and that is why they emphasize quality and beefiness as selection criteria. In May 1991, Alfredo Muskus and Josefina Lecuna Muskus became the sole owners of Santa Elena Ranch. They have grown the ranch’s brand domestically in show ring and abroad to over 40 countries, where Santa Elena genetics exist today. Josefina and Alfredo made their first appearance in the show ring in 1987 and won their first International Grand Champion Bull in 1993. The ranch’s exemplary show string is largely the product of the late Joe Thompson, who served as Santa Elena’s herdsman for 25 years. Throughout the years, the ranch has produced a number of international and national champions including the 2008 World Brahman Congress Grand Champion Cow. Today, Santa Elena Ranch is an advanced operation in every way. Performance records are meticulously kept, all cattle are registered, and DNA testing is performed on every animal. The ranching operations also include a progressive embryo program and a USDA certified laboratory— eligible to export anywhere in the world. Santa Elena is a leading exporter of Brahman cattle. The ranch is home to an animal export business, World Wide Livestock Express, Inc., which ships livestock all over the world. Santa Elena Ranch has stood the test of time and looks forward to a bright future through careful, reputable and select production. Alfredo and Josefina’s children, Luisa Elena Muskus and Alfredo A. Muskus, Jr., are actively involved in ranch decisions and the careful planning that goes into the breeding season. Currently, Alfredo, Jr. resides at the ranch and owns a ranch real estate business. Luisa Elena is a lawyer in Houston, Texas and makes regular trips to the ranch to stay involved in the ranching operations. Overall, Santa Elena Ranch plans to be part of the registered beef industry for a long time to come.
Santa Elena Ranch began in 1957 and the focus has been to produce a genetic package that is profitable for each segment of the industry. Today, the ranch is established as a world renown source of high quality American Red Brahman. Our females are feminine, fertile, correct, outstanding mothers with calving and milking traits. Our sire lineup is unquestionably the best, and we emphasize performance data, soundness, conformation, reproductive and fleshing ability, muscle and disposition. The genetic base of each animal is important to us. We work to implement a breeding plan based on an analysis of pedigree, performance, and conformation for each mating. This means you can consistently look to Santa Elena Ranch for profit-oriented, planned genetics. At Santa Elena Ranch we are there for you every step of the way, whether you need assistance with artificial insemination, conventional embryos, or sexed in vitro fertilized embryos. We can help you improve your current conception rate with our technical support team. Santa Elena Ranch can help you on your way to a genetically improved herd.
