A BIG HEARTY THANKS
goes out to the Newt Huffman Family for investing $15,500 to buy 1/3 rd interest in their choice of our ET heifer calves and also to the Kelly Barnard Family from Kansas for investing in the 2nd pick of these ET heifer calves after the ABBA sale. Both families are repeat clients and great friends that have some awesome POLLED Brahman cattle. All four families are excited about how these cattle will help to raise the bar on the quality of Brahman cattle. Be on the lookout for more breaking news as these cattle are born.

The $1,500.00 Bull
by: Marcus Shackelford
Gerry Stack was a Brahman breeder from the Tampa, Florida area that sold a lot of cattle to Central and South America, on commission, in the mid sixties. He was approached by Sid Crochet, Vice President in charge of cattle operations at U. S. Sugar, about a bull he wanted to sell. Sid told Gerry he wanted $1,500.00 for the bull. Gerry looked at the bull and thought he had good conformation and a good sheath, but decided he was a little “tight – hided” and didn’t think he would get big enough for him. Gerry told Sid he was not interested in the bull, but would try to sell him to some of his clients. Gerry began to hunt for a buyer for the bull and some time later found one. He contacted Sid and told him he had a buyer for the bull, but Sid had already consigned the bull to the sale in Houston and would not pull him out of the sale. Gerry had lost his commission on the $1,500.00 dollars.
The Get of Sire - Sugarland’s Rexcrata 1-229/3 The 229 bull was the number one bull in the Register of Renoun for many, many years. I. W. Whitaker died in 1971, at the age of 52, and never realized the full impact that 229 would make on the Brahman breed. Gerry Stack and Sid Crochet are also dead now, but as long as Gerry lived, he enjoyed telling about the time he “almost bought” 229 for $1,500.00 dollars.
“SUGAR” Sugarland’s Rexcrata 1-229/3 Sid Crochet’s gamble paid off. The bull, Sugarland’s Rexacrata 1, branded 229/3, brought $5,650.00 dollars in the 1967 Houston sale. The sale averaged $1,570.00 dollars. I. W. Whitaker over spent his budget, so he formed a partnership with his brother, W.W., and their brother-in-law ,R.Q. McSwane, and showed their cattle under the 3-W banner.
IW’s Rexcrata 234 - Sugarland’s Rexcrata 1-229/3
The 229 or Sugar offspring dominated the shows and sales in the early and mid seventies. The Grand Champion Brahman bull in Houston, from 1971 – 1975 was a 229 son. Several 229 herd bulls went to South Africa for five figures. Diamond T gave $100,000.00 for the National Champion 455 bull. Jack Keel bred Bozo, a half brother, half sister 229 mating, and sold the yearling for $30,000.00 dollars to Berchman Lavergne who sold a million dollars worth of semen and interest in the bull. Bozo was the sire of Remington 784/2, who set all kind of record sales for J. D. Hudgins.

Importance of
BUYING HERD BULLS Feet & Legs by Will Detering
As I stated last month, the influence of a bull on your herd is tremendous. He is half of the next generation, genetically speaking, so there are a few things that are difficult to tolerate. In this article I will talk about an area that I feel is most critical. Referred to by most as, “feet and legs”. This covers a lot of ground, no pun intended, but once I get past this in my selection process of a prospect I feel that I am half way through. Over the years, it has been apparent which lines of cattle, both in my herd and outside, have good feet and legs and which have problems. Sometimes I have had to use the latter, but I always count the potential “cost.” I figure if I have a generation or two of good “feet and legs” then I have some room to try these genetics, but I always immediately return to stronger lines with the next generation, even if I don’t see any problems. I have seen that feet and legs are one of the most inheritable characteristics in breeding Brahman cattle. I have learned the hard way when I have overlooked “feet and legs” as problems they are hard to breed out. There are mainly three things I look at when it comes to “feet and legs” ....hocks, pasterns and toes. If you only remember one thing about “feet and legs” remember this....they do not get better with age .....especially when they end up in the show barn! When you bring an animal into the show barn and “push” it, it’s like pouring gasoline on a small fire. Any problems they might have will “explode” immediately. Some issues you can hide

effectively, but they are still there genetically and are lurking below the surface like a time bomb and you WILL see them again if you don’t select against them. When looking at the hock you don’t want it to be too straight. Bulls with straight legs or not enough set to the hock don’t breed well and typically don’t like to travel long distances. What is too straight? You should see a definite difference in the angle between the two main bones that make up the leg with the knee in the middle. One way of telling if cattle are too straight legged is to look at the back of the knee. As cattle get straighter in the leg, the leg will develop wrinkles on the back of the knee where the skin is loose because there is no tension on it from the preferred angle. A lot of wrinkles is a warning! Straight legged cattle don’t do well long term and although they are popular in the steer world, they are a bad deal in breeding cattle. As many of you know, we have a farm also in Panama,Central America. The terrain of our farm is hilly and straight legged cattle will not work there. I select herd bull prospects there with more set in their back legs. It’s just too hard for animals without “set” to go up and down those hills. One of the great things about Brahman cattle is there ability to forage in difficult environments and travel long distances for food and water. Straight legged cattle can’t do that well. Consequently, in most parts of the world cattle are bred to have more set in their leg or if left to natural selection, like the deer, they will have a lot. “Buying Herd Bull” continued on page 61

Ruben V. Reyes
R
Leading Auctioneer Dies
uben V. Reyes, one of the premier livestock auctioneers in the industry and with a career that spanned almost 50 years, passed away on February 22, 2014 at the age of 73. He is survived by his loving wife, Myrna Morgen Reyes; his children, brothers, sisters, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He called hundreds of cattle sales across the United States and Mexico. He was primarily associated with the American breeds and was heavily involved as these breeds gained recognition in the industry. He would bring the gavel down for some of the most exciting sales in the history of the Brangus breed and was part of that breed’s tremendous growth and expansion period in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Reyes would be involved in many historical sales, including the first bull sales to gross over a million and then two million dollars at Brinks Brangus and would ask for the final bid on many of the highest selling bulls and donor females of the times. At many of the major Brahman sales in the U.S., Reyes’ bilingual auctioneering skills were an asset to breeders who marketed cattle to international cattlemen. He was also instrumental in the importation of the first fullblood Simmental bull by a group of U.S. cattlemen. That bull, “Amor” entered the United States from Canada with Reyes at the halter. He also sold many Herefords during his life and was part of the auction team for the prominent LBJ Hereford dispersal, following the former president’s death. Reyes was the youngest of 14 children born to Carlos and Maria Reyes in Berclair, Texas. His family was involved in agriculture and his love for cattle was developed at an early age. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in animal science in 1965 and remained a very loyal Aggie throughout his life. While at A&M, he was part of the 1965 International Champion Livestock Judging Team and that team is still regarded as one of A&M’s best, as it won Denver and Fort Worth, as well as the International in Chicago. His love of Aggie football was known by all, as he could recount plays, scores and stats as far back as Paul Bear Bryant coaching days. After graduating from Texas A&M, he attended Superior School of Auctioneering in Decatur, Illinois the same year. His first sale was an offering of Hereford bulls in San Angelo, Texas in 1966 and Reyes never considered another occupation from that day forward. Managing and selling cattle was his passion. Reyes would travel countless miles over the next 48 years selling purebred cattle and helping breeders market their product. Because he could auctioneer in English and Spanish, and jump back and forth between the languages, he was in high demand for sales that drew international buyers. Reyes also donated his services from the block for many causes over the years. Donation items to build buildings, fund junior cattle organizations and support breed association work were all sold by Reyes. “Ruben was a true professional. When you booked a sale with him, you knew he would be there, arrive early, be positive, treat every buyer and seller with integrity and work hard the entire sale. He was a friend to this industry and made every breeder feel significant. We will miss him and his presence on the block,” said Sammy Pierce, who managed many of the sales Reyes auctioneered. Reyes was widely recognized for his commanding voice and skill at securing top prices for cattle, but he also is credited for giving many industry professionals their start in the cattle marketing profession including Anthony Mihalski, Leo Casas, III, and Terry Reagan to name just a few. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ruben V. Reyes scholarship fund at Texas A&M University, which will benefit students from Bee County, Texas.

Remembering Ruben V. Reyes
“Ruben was one of the great celebrities of our Industry starting with the meteoric rise of the Registered Cattle business in the late 1960’s and 70’s when I became acquainted with him growing up as a young boy in Alice, Texas. He auctioneered all the major sales of those times and set many records in many breeds. He remained active as an auctioneer as late as 2012 at the age of 72. He became a mentor of mine from the time we met around 1970 and it was my dream to be a purebred livestock auctioneer from that moment, an almost unimaginably impossible goal at the time. He gave me endless and priceless counsel on auctioneering, sale management, and customer relations. Ruben taught me how to “shape” and display cattle. This ability to show cattle to prospective buyers at their optimum is a skill that cannot be taught at any University and benefits me to this day. Ruben's confidence in me when I was a young man gave me the courage to pursue my lifelong dream. It has enabled me to make a good living at my great passion, the cattle business, and to become part of the exclusive club of Purebred Livestock Auctioneers. His true love was Brahman cattle. We talked about them “ad nauseum” and I'm sure we bored any guests or passengers to death that happened to be with us when we "got off" on Brahman cattle. Ruben was a major player during the heady sales days of the early 1980s where celebrities, sports figures, and movie stars became part of the purebred cattle industry. But I also saw Ruben shine in little out of the way sale barns where the buyers were working people, facilities were inadequate, and prices were flat after the tax bill of 1986. He worked just as hard and cared just as deeply for these customers. He used to tell me, “Leo, for better or worse, these folks have trusted us to market their life's work. Never betray that trust. That $1200 cow for this family means just as much, maybe more, to them than that $20,000 heifer does to that millionaire. Anybody can sell a sale when they're throwing money at you. Here in the trenches is where you master your craft. The decimal point is just in a different place.” Ruben literally picked me up out of the Alice Sale Barn alleys when I was a skinny Junior High kid and guided me to where I am today, a graduate of Texas A&M, a Purebred Livestock Auctioneer, Brahman Breeder, and owner of over 1,000 head of cattle in 12 Texas counties. Much of what I have today I owe in large measure to Ruben.
Leo Casas, III
“Ruben was so professional and every sale received his full attention. He was always positive and encouraging to breeders, sales staff and young magazine editors, like myself. I learned a lot about treating people fairly and working hard for every client from him. He was driven to do his best every time he took the microphone and hammered that gavel. He also loved Texas A&M and he was always on top of all the agriculture and football news from Aggieland. He was a mentor and a friend. He will be missed by the folks in this industry and the industry will miss his style of auctioneering and his iconic presence on auction blocks.”
Martha Hollida Garrett “We have had three public auction sales over the years at V8 Ranch and Ruben was the auctioneer at all three. All of those were record breaking auctions for the time and no doubt Reuben's expertise played a part in breaking those records. It was just a given that if V8 Ranch had a sale, Reuben was going to be the auctioneer. He was one of the all-time greatest auctioneers in the cattle business.” Jim Williams

| The Brahman Journal
“Ruben Reyes was a great auctioneer in several breeds. I worked with him on a number of sales, from both sides of the auction block. He was a real professional. At the 1984 World Brahman Congress in Houston I was the sales manager and Reuben was the auctioneer. The sale was a huge success and we set a record that still stands at $24,773 on nineteen lots with a gross of $470,700. Reuben also worked on my Double J Ranch sales, our Acadiana Group sales and many other important Brahman sales over the years. On the other side, Reuben was the auctioneer when I put together the Suva Syndicate for the Cristwell – Thomas sale in 1983, where we set a record of $198,000 for one-quarter Semen interest. Ruben was also the auctioneer at the Spring Creek sale in 1989 when I bought Ringer for $66,000. As you can see Reuben was an important player in some of the greatest Brahman events. The breed will miss his help and participation.”

Brahman Steers Perform, Yield, and Grade with the Best
A total of 63 Brahman steers from the following breeders were represented in the project: Sartwelle Brahman Ranch, J.D. Hudgins- Locke Division, Flying W Ranch, Lindley Brahmans, Sam Duplantis, Louisiana State University, Bonchasse Land & Cattle, Watkins Brahmans. Spring-born 2012 steers in this project were put on feed the first week of December 2012 at Graham Land and Cattle Co. in Gonzales, Texas. Calves were re-implanted on April 15, 2013 and sorted into two groups. Group 1 included calves weighing above 750 pounds and Group 2 included calves weighing below 750 pounds. Group 1 was harvested on July 30, 2013, while Group 2 was harvested November 1, 2013 at Sam Kane Beef Processors, Inc. in Corpus Christi, Texas.
A total of 19% graded choice, 51% graded select, 30% graded standard. The average WBSF of 8.5 pounds was very near the 8.7 pounds that is considered “Tender” by industry standard.
The High Indexing Sire Group was figured by taking the top three highest indexing steers by a sire and the highest combined indexing groups were then ranked resulting in the final results. Awards were presented during the International Brahman Show on March 7, 2014 in Houston, Texas to the owners of the High Indexing Steer and High Indexing Sire Group.

donated Auction items to benefit the International Committee
The Watkins Family, of Watkins Cattle Co. and James Chenevert, of Genex Custom Collection Services, both generously donated items that were auctioned off during the 2014 ABBA International sale held in Houston, TX. The proceeds will benefit the ABBA International Committee and will be used to buy trophies that are handed out at International events.
"Supporting the efforts of the international committee is a top priority and we welcomed the opportunity to donate a duck at Watkins Cattle Company,” said Stuart Watkins of Watkins Cattle Company. “I cannot speak enough about the importance of ABBA providing championship awards at various Brahman activities throughout the world."
The Watkins family donated one duck hunt for two hunters during the 2014-15 season. The hunt will be held in Welsh, Louisiana, located twenty miles off the gulf coast and is considered by many a gateway to “Sportsman’s Paradise.” The guided hunt included one night of lodging at the Watkins Cattle Co. guest house, dining at an area seafood restaurant the night before and breakfast after the hunt.
Genex Custom Collection Services donated an XC 20 tank which will hold 600 units of semen or embryo canes. This tank, with 6 canisters, will hold approximately 6 to 8 large embryo canes per canister and up to 10 small embryo canes per canister. Johnny Jefcoat purchased the duck hunt for $700.00 and Ray Salinas bought the semen tank for $600.00.

The HLS&R Arena Director, Buck Buchanan, passed away this past summer and was involved with the HLS&R for over 60 years. 1999 marked 50 years of Buchanan announcing the Brahman Shows at the HLS&R. At the completion of the 1999 HLS&R Show the ABBA awarded Buchanan with the Brahman Bull trophy. After his passing Buchanan’s wife Julie, according to his wishes, presented the trophy to the Sartwelle family.
Getting it right! In the 2014 March issue of The Brahman Journal we misidentified the owners of +Miss V8 464/6 in the Register of Renown inductees list. The owners of 464/6 are V8 Ranch and Carlos Lee.

High Grading Brahman Bull - Schneider Brahmans, LLC, Boerne, TX “This is our 4th year putting bulls in the San Antonio All Breed sale and we have had the honor of receiving the Highest Grading Brahman bull each year. We take pride in putting quality bulls in these select sales and really appreciate the support of our buyers!” Wes Schneider
1st Place Pen Certified Open Heifers - John Malazzo Farms, Caldwell, TX “We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to participate in the S.A.L.E commercial heifer show and sale. It is one of the premier cattle shows in the state. The level of competition and the quality of the cattle is second to none, but perhaps the best thing about the whole deal is the friendliness of the sale management and the consignors. Good people with good cattle make it a great event every year. We know that we have to enter our best cattle and have them in great shape to just be able to compete. As far as my operation, we run both registered and qualified Brahman cows using moderate framed registered Hereford bulls. We also run Registered Brahman bulls on a few Angus and Hereford cows. We try to sort our F-1 heifers into the most uniform groups possible, which is the way I like to buy cattle myself. I am especially proud of the work that my wife, son, daughter, and dad all do together for this sale.” . John Malazzo
1st Place Brahman Pairs, 1st Place Certified F-1 Breds and 1st Place Certified F-1 Pairs - Diamond H Cattle, Brenham, Texas “Winning these champions was a honor for me and my program. I take pride in producing the cattle I produce and raise. It’s a lot of hard work preparing for the shows and trying to get next years cattle ready to breed for the following year. I always liked the Brahman cattle when I grew up showing them thru 4h and FFA. My goal is trying to producing the best female. Winning these championships make me feel that I’m doing the right thing. The last couple of years for me have been extra special winning Houston in 2012 and 2013 with the overall champions.” Bradley Hodde

The opposite extreme of this is sickle hock and although I am unaware of any adverse result of this condition (like the deer), it is extremely frowned upon in the show ring of the United States. Pasterns are the next critical area. Like the hock, there are two extremes that should be avoided. Pasterns with little or no flex in them and those that are considered weak. Some will be so weak as to the point of their dew claws almost touching the ground when they walk. Both will cause you issues in the show ring, but from my experience only hocks with not enough flex will cause lameness. Weak pasterns, although they become worse with age, “Buying Herd Bull” continued on page 68

experiences, share knowledge and promote cooperation necessary to increase competitiveness in the livestock industry.

The state official emphasized that the growth of the global population means a major challenge in producing enough food, a challenge that the livestock industry plays a major role. Solis Gomez added that the most important mission of authorities and producers is to address the growing demand and develop a herd while allowing a sensible use of land and water so as to protect the environment. The president of the Mexican Association of Zebu, Erik Abrahamsson Blankenship, acknowledged the support of federal, state and municipal governments for the Tropical Livestock Congress in Tampico, Tamaulipas. “We are very pleased with the attendance and the interest in this event,” stated Abrahamsson. “We are sure that the event will grow year after year and look forward to including a large show and more educational conferences next year.” The inauguration of the Congress was attended by the president of the National Confederation of Livestock Organizations ( CNOG ), Oswaldo Cházaro Montalvo, the director general of Trust Funds to Agriculture (FIRA ), Rafael Gamboa González, the president of the Livestock Union regional Tamaulipas, Homero Garcia de la Llata, Rep. Hazel Enrique Cardenas, the local deputy Olga Patricia Ruiz Soca, municipal government representatives, and presidents of associations and livestock breeders, among others.

“Buying Herd Bull” continued from page 61 will not usually cause lameness. Even so, these extremes should be strongly selected against.
Bad toes are the enemy that can be hidden. The problem with toes are that they can be cosmetically fixed and the problem goes away....or does it? Of course it doesn’t! All show cattle need their feet trimmed. From time to time an animal can be foundered and have long toes that need corrective trimming regularly, but animals with curled toes or one toe that is significantly smaller than the other should be strongly considered before selecting. Some of you who know me well will know the bull I am referring to but let’s just say that I “fixed” a show bull’s toes one time. The long story short, I ended up killing him and most of his offspring because he transmitted the same undesirable curled toe to his progeny. I kept a few daughters who are still producing well, but I regret the day I ever said “let’s fix it”. Let me finish up by saying as cliche as it is, moderation is the key. Not too straight and not too set. I have found breeding cattle is like trying to put a puzzle together with all the right pieces. It’s not easy or everyone would be doing it, but it can be rewarding. Till next month....
