We Are Excited
about the future of our POLLED program as we grow into multiple generations of top quality POLLED cattle that are competing at the highest level in all arenas. We are very proud of our small but powerful donor herd that we are mating to the leading POWER POLLED SIRES from all over the Brahman World. Visitors Are Always WELCOME to see our POLLED Brahmans in their working clothes.
LMC Polled Passion is our Herd MATRIARCH sired by +LMC LF Ambassador and out of LMC +S Polled Madonna (by Pistolero) which represents our time proven GOLDEN CROSS. She won the prestigious 2016 Reserve Grand Championship at Houston. Her first seven calves are all outstanding with the best yet to come.
LMC LF Polled Diva is another super fancy smooth polled young donor sired by LMC Polled Sambo and JDH Lady Manso 993, a JDH Atlas Manso grand daughter doing Louie a great job of producing championship cattle. We love the length, power and muscle that Polled Diva offers. We are flushing her to “Polled Phenom.”
LMC LF Polled Queen is a LMC Polled Passion x MR V8 139/7 (P/S). She is the growthiest heifer we have ever raised. We are flushing her as a virgin heifer as we have been very successful doing this with both her dam and maternal grand dam. Her full sib topped the Houston ABBA Sale selling for $19,000 to the Sellman Family.
MR V8 733/7 (P) “Polled Phenom” is our Junior Herd Sire that is the product of two National Champions - +JDH Mr. Elmo Manso and Miss V8 100/6. Like these donors, HE NEARS PERFECTION IN THE FLESH, has the carcass merit and EPD’s to help us raise the bar for all of the Brahman World. Look at his bone to sheath ratio. Effective January 1, 2017, ALL embryo transfer animals MUST be DNA Parent Verified before they can be registered. This means that the sire and dam must already be on file and then the calf to be registered must have had a sample submitted and the confirmed results must be submitted with the application for registration. The ABBA now has the forms for both approved labs on their website. You can contact the ABBA Office and request kits and then complete the form at your leisure.
ABBA CARCASS EVALUATION & PERFORMANCE TESTED BULL PROGRAMS On Monday, March 27, approximately 40 head of Brahman steers were weighed, processed, scored for muscling and frame and had DNA collected at Graham Feedyard in Gonzales, Texas. Dr. Joe Paschal, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Livestock Specialist, has continued to head up this process. The steers were assigned to one of two feeding groups by weight. Earlier, Dr. Courtney Daigle, Assistant Professor of Animal Science at Texas A&M, and Dr. Paschal assigned temperament scores on the cattle. These steers will most likely be sold in the fall, and complete carcass and tenderness data will be collected at that time. On May 10, the ABBA Bull Gain Test bulls were placed on test at Texana Feedyard near Floresville, Texas. The bulls were weighed, measured for frame score, and had a DNA sample collected. The bulls were scanned for ribeye area, 12th-13th rib and rump fat, and intramuscular fat (marbling) by Donnie Robertson. Prior to weighing, the bulls were evaluated for soundness by a 3-person panel of commercial cow-calf producers and given pen temperament scores by Dr. Daigle. The bulls are now being placed on feed for 112 days. The bulls are being evaluated twice in this year’s test - once at the time of ultrasound and once before the sale videos are taken. A maximum of 30 bulls will be sold in the ABBA Bull Test Sale.

Monty Motta elected
CRICEPA PRESIDENT Following the 2017 Exposición Nacional de Ganado Cebú, the Association of Breeders of Cebu in Panama (CRICEPA) gathered and elected Monty Motta of La Hacienda Hermanos Motta in Remedios, Panama as the association’s new president. He will replace outgoing President Rodolfo Moreno of Ganadera Moreno in Chitre, Panama, who has done a tremendous job in the position.
“I’m very honored and grateful to be elected president of CRICEPA,” Monty said. “It is one of the oldest and most prestigious associations here with national and international recognition. I know that it is a great responsibility and lots of work, but I’m excited to take on the challenge and do the best for the cattleman’s registry in Panama.”
“Estoy honrado y agradecido de ser elegido presidente de CRICEPA” dijo Monty. “Es una de las más viejas y prestigiosas asociaciones aquí, con reconocimiento nacional e internacional. farm was originally purchased in 1946 by the five Motta brothers (Arthur, Philip, Robert, George and Albert) from Joshua Piza; hence the name, Hermanos (brothers in Spanish). The farm was managed by Monty’s grandfather, George, from 1946 until his death in 1969. Monty’s father took over until he retired in January of this year. Now, the operation is managed by Monty and his cousin Roberto. The Motta operation has both purebred and commercial cattle as well as two dairy operations and a rice mill, from which they get some of the byproducts used to feed their cattle. The Mottas have hosted an annual sale in July for the last 24 years and an elite sale in Azuero since 2005. They are well-known breeders in the region and utilize top genetics in their program. The family has brought in genetics from the United States, Jamaica, Cuba and Mexico and has exported cattle to Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador as well as several Central American countries. At the entrance of the house at Hermanos Motta they have a sign that says in Spanish, “On this farm there is work 365 days of this year and every year.” We look forward to Monty bringing these family values of dedication and work ethic to his leadership position in CRICEPA!

HANDLE LIVESTOCK Texas A&M Livestock Specialist Ron Gill
s Stress with LesS
by Jane Fyksen
Who wouldn’t wish handling cattle would go like clockwork, especially when it seems like it rarely does? Too often working cattle stresses both man and beast, straining marriages and sometimes even resulting in injury to an animal, or worse yet, a cattle handler. Handling cattle needn’t be an exercise in anger management, according to Ron Gill, Texas A&M University Livestock Specialist. "Low-stress cattle handling is not establishing “kumbayah” with the cow," Gill said. “It has nothing to do with being gentle and slow,” he said. “It has everything to do with getting them to understand what I’m asking. Are they doing what I’m asking when I ask?” "It’s also understanding that the best way to communicate with cattle is to tap into their sight," he said. Thus lowstress handling can only be accomplished with a complete understanding of how a prey animal like a beef cow responds to line of sight — and how what cattle see influences their movement and behavior. A successful stock person keys on a cow’s head – the 4 to 6 inches occupied by its eyes and ears, as opposed to trying to push the body around or slapping its rump. The cow truly doesn’t know what a person is asking from that. She’s going to turn around to see what’s going on behind her, or she’ll circle around the handler to try to see what he’s asking. She’s also apt to go in the wrong direction.
Looking into the cow’s eye adds pressure, similar to how a good stock dog controls livestock by staring — or what’s commonly referred to as “giving eye.” Noise – particularly a human voice – is usually stressful for cattle and only marginally successful in obtaining the desired result. Sound should only be used as a backup method to move cattle, when line of sight and the handler’s position in relation to the animal isn’t adequate. Similarly, distracting sounds can shift cattle’s focus away from the direction the farmer wants them to go. Gill said touch is really only useful when cattle are confined and additional stimulus is necessary to encourage them to respond. "Effective touch does not include sorting sticks or paddles that give cattle a jolt nor whacking them with anything," he said. There are five things a producer should know about cattle behavior, he said, for easier and speedier cattle handling. 1. Cattle want to see the herds person – Cattle have excellent peripheral vision with two exceptions – a large blind spot directly behind them and a small one in front of them. Working cattle from behind encourages them to turn to see the handler. When working from behind, to keep cattle from turning, stay in their sight by moving from side to side. 2. Cattle want to go around the handler – This is also related to cattle’s desire to maintain visual contact. The handler CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

needs to position himself so when cattle do go around him, they’re pointed directly at the intended gate or destination. They’ll think it was their idea to go there, Gill said. 3. Cattle want to be with other cattle and attempt to go where they see other cattle – Prey animals, which cattle are, have a herd mentality because there is strength in numbers. A producer can take advantage of that natural instinct by working the cattle at the front of a group. Start the front cattle moving and those in back will follow, Gill said. 4. Cattle can only process one thought at a time – If cattle are thinking about anything other than what the handler is asking them to do, change their focus before putting pressure on them. 5. Cattle want to remove any pressure they feel – Their instinct is to return to the last-known place that was safe or comfortable. A producer can use this to his advantage when sorting and moving cattle from one pen to another by incorporating a “return box” — or what’s commonly referred to as a “Bud Box” after its designer, the late Bud Williams. Gill said a Bud Box is a facility design that allows a handler to position himself so cattle flow out of the box into either a crowd alley leading to a chute or to a single-file trailer load-out. The box is for flow-through; cattle shouldn’t be cooped up in the box, waiting to be sent into a crowd alley or to the trailer. “Bring them in and let them flow back out immediately,” Gill said. “Remember, the crowd alley will normally not be empty when additional cattle are brought through the box. To maintain flow, it will be necessary to add additional cattle while one or two stand in the crowd alley waiting processing.

Consequently, the length of the crowd alley is important. Ideally the crowd alley would be long enough to hold an adequate number of cattle for processing, while more cattle are brought through the box – without disrupting flow.” Gill said the livestock industry has migrated to a crowd alley that starts to curve at the entrance from a tub or box. Instead, he said, the exit from a tub or box and entrance into the crowd alley should be straight for at least two mature-cow body lengths. That allows cattle to flow by tricking them into not thinking they’re entering a dead-end crowd alley. Keep it straight for at least 12 feet and then start a curve if space is limited. Otherwise a long straight crowd alley works best for processing cattle, he said. Most cow-calf operations need a box at least 12 feet wide and 20 feet deep. A width of 14 feet is too wide for working livestock on foot; it’s for working cattle on horseback. “The box needs to be deep enough to allow the cattle to flow to the back of the box, let the handler close the gate and get in position before the cattle transition out of the back of the box,” Gill said. “Just like a tub system, never overfill the box. Success depends on the flow into, transition and flow out of the box.” It’s critical the end of the box be translucent so cattle can see light and build speed when entering the box. Entry speed facilitates the transition and correct flow out of the box. However, opt for solid panels on the box’s entry gate and sides of the box closest to the crowd alley and load-out exits. That will minimize distractions. Load-out and crowd-alley exit gates should also open flat against the sides of the box. Contact Gill at rgill@tamu.edu or 979-845-3579.

| THE BRAHMAN JOURNAL
A beautiful young black tipped ear female combined with a strong top and a wide hip. “Trinity” is a tremendous and attractive show prospect with a hard loin muscle and the sought after bluish pigment. Miss RB 317/7 is also a future donor cow in the making, her dam is a daughter of Miss RB 699/3, a beautiful Dam donor cow that was the highest selling lot in our 2014 Houston Highlights Sale and her sire is Mr. JDH 281 f, a bull that the first time we used him produced 4 show heifers and a herd bull prospect. The highest and second highest lots of our 2016 Houston Highlights Sale were out of JDH 281, they were sold to our partners and good friends John Henke and Mike England respectively.
A full sister to Lot 1, “Natasha” is sound all around with the conformation to be a great show heifer, with her looks, give 305/7 a little time and she will be turning judges’ heads, her build says it all. Again, her dam Dam is a daughter of Miss RB 699/3, a beautiful donor cow that was the highest selling lot in our 2014 Houston Highlights Sale and her sire is Mr. JDH 281 f, a bull that the first time we used him produced 4 show heifers and a herd bull prospect. The highest and second highest lots of our 2016 Houston Highlights Sale were out of JDH 281, they were sold to our partners and good friends John Henke and Mike England respectively.
Rarely will you find another opportunity to purchase this genetic package, we thought so highly of Miss WR 071 that we cloned her three times, the first one being Marigold’s dam. +WR 071 (photo to right) is the top producing gray dam of the 2016 show circuit and the second top producing dam of the last five years. Her progeny includes 2014 All American Grand Champion Female, 2016 National Grand Champion Bull and the 2017 Houston Reserve Grand Champion and many other highlighted animals. Her sire’s progeny are not strangers to the winning circle, +JADL Rey 110 was the 3rd producing gray bull for 2016 and 4th in the last five years. 297/7 is a typical example of this mating with an awesome show look, she possesses perfect feet and legs as well as great dimension with a beautiful profile. “Marigold” is the last of the 2017 model.
“Burnet” is a very easy going individual with stunning pigmentation. At RB we strive to breed these kind of heifers with correctness from top to bottom. She has a lot of growth potential, clean fronted, straight top with an impressive show look. 293/7 is a full sister to lot 6 and genetically speaking also to lot 8, as their dam are clones of Miss RB 789/5 (photo to right), the Houston and World Congress Reserve Senior Champion. Her sire is Mr. H Bogota 253/1, a Maddox son owned by Sexing Technologies. We were so satisfied with this mating that we flushed back all 789 sisters to 253. The end result is a straight topped individual with exceptional characteristics.
Summer Sizzler Sale
This is a unique heifer that we wanted to keep but we have a commitment with the AJBA to offer our cream of the crop. 283/6 has a beautiful long neck with an extreme length of body, straight top, good feet and legs, clean underlines and many other attributes. Don’t lose the opportunity to own an RB heifer with great potential of becoming a winner in the ring and a future donor. “Gail” is a straight Heritage heifer, double bred Maddox daughter whose dam H 352 won 2nd in a very competitive class in Houston and immediately after became part of our elite group of donor cows. In her pedigree you may find a crowd of hall of fame sires like Maddox, Madison, Domino, Union, Rancher, and more
This young female can bring an ambitious junior a handful of ribbons. A full sister to lot 4, she is a stout heifer with an outstanding structure, clean fronted with a straight top and a singular leveled hip. “Kali” shows her beauty from any angle you see her and she is full of breed character. Her dam is a clone of Miss RB 789/5 (photo to right), the Houston and World Congress Reserve Senior Champion. Her sire is Mr. H Bogota 253/1, a Maddox son owned by Sexing Technologies. We were so satisfied with this mating that we flushed back all 789 sisters to 253. The end result is straight topped individuals with exceptional characteristics. Don’t miss out and press the bid option.
If you think we stayed with keepers, please think again. We know it is hard to pick with all the good ones in the sale but “Allegra” should be one of your favorites. She is very stout and correct, near perfection with Dam a remarkable structure, clean fronted with a straight top and level hipped with the super showy look. Her sire is Mr. H Bogota 253/1, a Maddox son owned by Sexing Technologies that has done an excellent job for us while her dam is a top donor cow co-owned with Moreno Ranches, full sister to the 2014 All American Grand Champion Cow as well as the 2016 National Grand Champion Bull and 2017 International Reserve Grand Champion Bull among other division and class winners.
A real gorgeous heifer that it’s hard to let go but whether in the County, Junior or Open Shows RB needs to be well represented. We really like her length of body as well as her heavy bone, very clean underlines with a strong top and a beautiful head. “Cher” carries her rear quarter muscle all the way down to her legs giving her that stunning show look. Her dam, Miss RB 789/51, is one the clones of Miss RB 789/5 (photo to the right), the Houston and World Congress Reserve Senior Champion while her sire Mr. H Bogota 253/1, a Maddox son owned by Sexing Technologies has done such an outstanding job with these matings that when “Cher” and her sisters hit the ground we decided to IVF again all full sisters to 789/5 using Bogota’s semen, don’t hesitate 261/6 will develop into a winner.
July 17th - 20th, 2017 - Sale at cattleinmotion.com
Please pay good attention to “Fantina”, she is a growthy, very long and big footed with a heavy bone heifer. She’s put together nicely with plenty of attributes for her to develop into a class topper. Her dam Dam is a full sister to Miss RB 789/5, the Houston and World Congress Reserve Senior Champion and her sire is none other than Mr. V8 191/7, the 2014 Reserve International Champion at Houston and sire of the 2017 International Grand Champion at Houston whose dam Miss V8 464/6 is the World Congress Senior and Grand Champion Female. In Miss RB 239/6 you may find the representation of two very prominent cows, at the top the World Congress Senior and Grand Champion female and at the bottom the World Congress Senior Reserve Champion cow. Great genetics!
Now you will be surprised with this highlighted genetic package, Paige is an own daughter of +Miss WR 071, the top producing gray dam of the 2016 show circuit and the second top producing dam of the last five years. Her progeny includes the 2014 All American Grand Champion Female, 2016 National Grand Champion Bull and Dam the 2017 Houston Reserve Grand Champion and many other division and class winners. But wait! Her sire is Mr. V8 191/7, the 2014 Reserve International Champion bull at Houston and sire of the 2017 International Grand Champion bull at Houston, whose dam Miss V8 464/6 is the World Congress Senior and Grand Champion Female. So you have the Sire of the International Grand Champion bull and the dam of the Reserve International Grand Champion Bull at Houston 2017. This is without a doubt one of the very best offerings ever in a public auction. “Paige” has great length of body, heavy bone and strong loin area with lots of volume on her rib cage and an overpowering presence.
This beauty will be a big and stout gorgeous girl, check her big bone and size, she weaned as one of the heaviest in her contemporary group. “Cassandra” is an easy keeper heifer and her powerful body is packed with red meat. She profiles beautifully and is great on all four corners. Cassandra is a full sister to lot 12 and is out Miss RB 789/52, a clone out of Miss RB 789/5 (photo to right), Houston and World Congress Reserve Senior Champion. Our good friend John Goode purchased in the 2015 RB and Friends Sale an IVF flush of this cow that resulted in 8 beautiful uniformed heifers, you can’t do better than that. Her sire is again the well renowned Mr. V8 171/4, the 2014 Reserve International Champion at Houston and sire of the 2017 Houston International Grand Champion whose dam Miss V8 464/6 is the World Congress Senior and Grand Champion Female.
As you must have noticed the sale is in chronological order, Eclairisse is the oldest of this exceptional twelfth pack of heifers and she offers an unlimited opportunity to take a junior to the podium. Miss RB 225/6 is a medium size frame female that travels freely and easily, she has plenty of muscle with a nice level hip and smooth shoulders. Eclairisse is clean fronted with heavy bone, well balanced and rich in breed character. Her dam is Miss RB 789/52, a clone out of Miss RB 789/5 (photo to right), Houston and World Congress Reserve Senior Champion. Her sire is the sought after Mr. V8 171/4, 2014 Reserve International Champion at Houston and sire of the 2017 Houston International Grand Champion whose dam Miss V8 464/6 is the World Congress Senior and Grand Champion Female.

MEXICAN IMPORTS COLUMN BY ALBERTO BANUET
The author, Alberto Banuet, 62, studied veterinary medicine at the National University of Mexico, and has written for many Latin American publications, including: Diario Novedades, Diario Milenio, Diario El Universal, Revista Ganadero and Revista Rural MX. He is the father of five children and grandfather to seven. He served as Federal commissioner of Agriculture in the State of Yucatan, Secretary of Agriculture in the State of Tabasco, and Director General of Agriculture and Livestock Health Department SARH. He breeds Red Brahman cattle as well as Australian Shepherds and Katahdin sheep. Brahman breeders should be proud to see their genetics thriving in the show rings of the United States circuits even if they belong to foreigners. It sure took them a long time to come back and compete, at least… 50 years? Some Mexican breeders were starting to think maybe they were not as good to start with, as if in 50 years nobody in Mexico could breed some decent cattle. A couple of weeks ago, a well-respected Texas cattleman told me that he thought Mexicans had seriously improved their breeding over the past ten years. The cattleman was impressed with the quality of bulls and cows going to Texas. He was quite happy about it and encouraged the breeders we were with to keep up the good work. I have written before about the way people see, live and love their cattle in Mexico. The pride and feelings they display for them is right next to the ones they bestow upon their family. The last time I was in Houston, during the International Brahman show, I was observing a fellow Mexican breeder sitting in the stands; although being on time is not a common trait with Latinos, that day he made darn sure to be. His wife, and I guess mother-in-law, were a couple of rows behind him because, I assume, he did not want to be bothered on such an important day of his life. You could tell by the ladies’ faces it was a little too early for them; however, they really had no choice. They each had a big glass of iced, half-caff ristretto, venti, 4-pump, sugar-free, cinnamon dolce, soy skinny latte they got at Starbucks; the only difference was that Mother had a slice of lemon pound cake also.
The guy was really nervous; he had a cup of black coffee, but had a little something extra in it they don’t usually serve at Starbucks. I am guessing he brought his own vitamins with him, because every now and then he poured a little in his coffee.
He did not have to talk. You could read his face, his expressions, his eyes; he had finally made it to Houston! He could not believe it, and it sure cost him a bundle. He was trying to remember the last time his heart was pounding so fast and furious.
Believe me, this guy could not be having more fun even if he was marching in the Disney parade next to Mickey Mouse, and that is the happiest place on earth. Being at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, competing with a bull he produced in the southern part of Mexico, is the best thing that has ever happened. It didn’t matter if he won or lost, although as faith had it he won his class. His father and grandfather would be really proud of him… and this feeling, believe it or not, is good for business.

I know some Brahman breeders will not agree and wish “the wall” was also to prevent bulls coming from Mexico over to the US, but I encourage them to look at what the Brangus breeders have done. They have taken this ordeal in stride and used it to their benefit. Mexican Brangus bulls come over to the US, they win sometimes and they all feel good about it because they were American genetics to start with. They work out deals that benefit both parties, and Mexicans keep buying semen, embryos and cows. Mexican Brangus breeders keep coming to the shows and spending their dollars in the US.
Business has to go both ways so that everyone can have fun and money keeps rolling, that is what makes the world go ‘round they say… oh yeah, love also.
Anyway, I anticipate that is exactly what is going to happen in the Brahman breed. With the latest results at Houston, Mexican breeders are encouraged to keep sending good bulls to the US. They are not interested in selling bulls to Thailand. They want to go to San Antonio, Houston and even Dallas because it is a matter of pride. They want to spend the days at the shows, while their family shops, and shops some more.
I understand the ABBA has had some recent changes, and change can be good. Be assured you will always be welcome to Mexico. I recommend American breeders make themselves more visible at the major shows south of the border. It is great for business, good for the breed, and paying back visits is a must for friendship.

HERITAGE CATTLE ANNOUNCES VALUE-ADDED PROGRAMS FOR CUSTOMERS Heritage Cattle Company, a leading Brahman seedstock genetic provider, is pleased to announce its Value-Added Bull and Heifer Development Programs for progressive breeders who utilize Heritage Cattle Company genetics. Recently, the Heritage Cattle Company and Friends Allure II Production Sale featured select cattle consigned by Heritage Cattle Company's customers. This elite offering created a strong demand and allowed customers of Heritage Cattle Company an added marketing opportunity under the guidance of owner Judd Cullers and his experienced team. These two programs are available for breeders who utilize Heritage Cattle Company genetics and will provide the opportunity to cooperatively develop, collect necessary data and market their cattle. Heritage Cattle Company realizes that in today’s competitive marketplace that breeders are looking not only for superior genetics but also for cattle that are properly prepared and proven, thus the basis of these value-added programs. The programs are broken down for Spring and Fall born calves. Currently, nominations are being accepted for the Fall 2016 programs, which includes animals that were born in August, September, October and November. To get involved in the program, interested breeders with offspring from a Heritage Cattle Company sire or dam should contact Judd Cullers for the animal(s) to be inspected at weaning. Once the animal has been accepted into the program, it will be delivered to Heritage Cattle Company where animals will undergo a warm-up period, complete a test period with both entry-data and exitdata collected, and then be prepared to be marketed. Heritage Cattle Company will hold auctions in both the fall and spring of each year to market the value-added animals. The value-added females will be marketed each spring and fall as open heifers while the bulls will be sold each spring and fall in a Value-Added Bull Sale. For more information on the programs or to download the nomination form you can visit www.heritagecattle.com. Heritage Cattle Company has long been known as an innovator in the beef cattle industry through its cooperator programs, international presence and marketing endeavors. Heritage Cattle Company is excited to add these new programs which offer a combination of customer service, breed improvement and marketing outreach that will ultimately add value to the customer’s profitability. For more information on the Heritage Cattle Company Value-Added Programs or the many other opportunities that are offered for your success, feel free to visit heritagecattle.com, give the ranch a call or stop by for a ranch tour.
