Our breeding program is primarily designed to concentrate the blood of specific legendary sires (King P-234, Royal King, Joe Hancock, Blue Valentine, Mr. San Peppy, and Driftwood) to produce some of the greatest ranch horses with impeccable bloodlines, strong bones, great cow sense, and a gentle disposition - the type of horse you will be proud to own and be mounted on! Our breeding program allows us to hold, and in some cases, increase the percentage of blood carried by foals we produce.

On Saturday, September 13th, we will begin the morning around 8am with a demonstration of all our riding horses that will be in the sale. All sale horses will be available for viewing Saturday morning at the

outdoor riding arena. At 12:30 pm the Ranch Horse Production Sale will begin, at the covered arena. The sale will be under the covered arena located at the Wagon Wheel Ranch™ Headquarters, 6 miles NE of Lometa, Texas, just off Farm to Market Highway 581. Lunch will be served after the sale and then load-outs will begin 30 minutes after the sale ends. We are offering a variety of horses in this sale. A good selection of riding horses, several outstanding stud prospects, some very nice brood mares, and a good selection of young fillies. We hope you’ll find one or more of our consignments that will fit your needs. The fun is not over after the sale, so please makes plans to stay Saturday afternoon for a Horsemanship/Training demonstration with Buster McLaury and for our Saturday evening dinner, social, and live entertainment with Red Steagall and The Boys in the Bunkhouse Band.

About the Wagon Wheel Ranch Program The Wagon Wheel Ranch breeding program is primarily designed to concentrate the blood of specific legendary sires, i.e. King P-234, Royal King, Joe Hancock, Buck Hancock, Blue Valentine, Dick Sonoita, Driftwood, Gooseberry, Mr. San Peppy & Rowdy Blue Man. To accomplish the above, we breed King bred stallions to King bred mares, Joe Hancock bred stallions to Joe Hancock bred mares, etc. This line breeding allows us to hold, and in some cases, to increase the percentage of this blood carried by foals produced from these breedings. When horses are inbred, their progeny have one or more matched pairs of chromosomes, out of the thirty-two (32) pairs, which all horses have. The significance of one or more matched pairs of chromosomes in a breeding horse is that each chromosome carries hundreds of genes. Genes carry the elements by which hereditary characteristics are transmitted from parent to progeny. Theoretically, each mature reproductive cell carries a gene for every inheritable characteristic (the progeny receives a set of genes from each of its parents). Therefore, when a breeding horse has even one pair of chromosomes matched, the consistency of type, produced in its foals increases notably! As the number of matched pairs of chromosomes in a breeding horse increases, so does the uniformity of foals produced! Practically speaking, Mr. Gist had found that twelve (12) matched pairs of chromosomes is the maximum attainable (the foals produced by the very few horses, which have twelve matched pairs of chromosomes are “rubber stamp” like in their uniformity). However, Ed Heimann, Geneticist and horse breeder, produced one mare with fifteen (15) matched pairs of chromosomes. Her name was Becs Honor, and she was one of the highest percentage Three Bars, TB brood mares in the WWR herd. The number of matched pairs of chromosomes (or lack of any) is referred to as homozygosity, and is abbreviated HZ in our horse descriptions. The higher the HZ, the more likely the horse noted will be able to reproduce itself (and the characteristics of the legendary sire to which the horse is inbred). Ordinarily, as HZ increases Hybrid Vigor (another trait we monitor closely) declines. Hybrid Vigor, abbreviated HV in our horse descriptions, is the extra vitality exhibited in a horse when no defective genes are expressed (the horse’s defective genes, which most horses carry, are present in the

4

Wago n Wheel R anc h

reproductive cells, but do not exhibit their presence in any observable physical traits of the horse) allowing an individual to exhibit more size, bone, muscling, speed, etc. then either of the parents exhibit. Ed Heimann, when doing genetic research at the University of Missouri, figured the average HV in running bred quarter horses at a negative 1.2% to a positive 1.75% (however, he took only the top 65% of running quarter horses, of that era, into consideration; thus automatically raising the average figures), maximum HV is attained by breeding intensely inbred horses of one family to intensely inbred horses of another family, i.e., King P-234 to Leo, etc. We have found that a positive 35% HV is the highest which we can produce with our breeding herd (up from 26%, some years ago). Excellent mothering ability is one of the traits expressed by mares carrying above average HV. Performance potential/athletic ability is another resulting trait, and is the primary goal in our breeding the true two-way hybrid (progeny of two parents which are inbred to different families). Although true two-way hybrids have no matched pairs of chromosomes, they usually will produce uniformity in their foals more consistently than other horses which have no matched pairs of chromosomes, and whose parents had no matched pairs of chromosomes (known as “shotgun” bred horses). The reason that they will do so is probably because both of their parents are inbred, thus narrowing the diversity of their ancestors’ genes, compared to the “shotgun” bred horse’s wider diversity of ancestors. The inbreeding program which we pursue, and others now and earlier have or are pursuing, is more hazardous (and thus more expensive) than linebreeding (a less intense form of inbreeding, which doesn’t allow for longer term concentration of blood); or breeding the ‘best’ to the ‘best’ (as practiced by the late dean of early quarter horse breeders, Ott Adams of Alice, Texas); or the majority of ‘breeders’ who run here, there and yonder (with their ‘shotgun’ bred mares) to this or that popular stallion who may or may not be genetically equipped to produce foals like himself on a consistent basis. The reason for the more hazardous nature of inbreeding is, at the same time, the reason for practicing it in the first place! The reason being that inbreeding concentrates blood (the gene pool), which can be good when no defective genes (which are concentrated along with the desirable genes) are expressed in the horse resulting from inbreeding. However, inbreeding (in our experience) invariably results in a higher percentage of the resulting foals physically expressing conformational, and/or mental defects, which are

such that these individuals must be culled from the breeding program, at the least; and euthanized, at the worst. Therefore, breeders who cannot stand such financial pressure should not practice inbreeding, for the most part. Those who do practice inbreeding usually come to a point in their program where they must outcross their inbred horses with horses from another family (usually, but not always, inbred themselves). We, for the most part, are constantly outcrossing our inbred horses to produce true two-way, and sometimes threeway, hybrids with excellent performance potential. Through experience, we found that when an inbred female has as many as eight or nine matched pairs of chromosomes (produced by breeding fathers to daughters or sons to mothers) she will tend to abandon her first foal at birth and/or be a very poor mother with below average milk production. To help this situation, we have learned to breed such inbred females to an inbred stallion of another family for their first foal. This technique produces a foal which is a true two-way hybrid carrying so much hybrid vigor that it can persevere in the face of its dam’s poor mothering ability, and eventually (usually, with some creep feeding) attain normal size, weight, etc. Subsequently, the inbred mare can be bred to inbred stallions of her own family, due to her increasing maturity. Another ‘problem’ with inbreeding is, sometimes, a loss of size and bone. We say, sometimes, because there is usually a way to avoid loss of size and bone, (and to avoid increasing percentages of defects in foals produced). That way, in our experience, is to strive to breed ‘genetically super horses’ (horses with both above average homozygosity, and above average hybrid vigor). To accomplish this, one must breed inbred horses of the same family to a member of the opposite sex, which goes back to the blood being concentrated through as many different paths as possible. For instance, breed an inbred King stallion which goes back to King P-234 through Poco Bueno, Roper Boy and Red Bud L to an inbred King mare who goes back to King P-234 through Bimbo Hank, and King Hankins. This procedure usually results in a superior foal, which is still carrying a very high percentage of King blood, yet not physically showing any defective genes (which it may be carrying in its reproductive cells). Inbreeding is a dirty word in the vocabulary of many horse breeders (due to a lack of knowledge, and/or listening to those who have no more knowledge of genetics than themselves). However, a study of the pedigrees of many great horses will reveal their inbreeding. Some of the great horse breeders had formal training in genetics (those in charge of the Robert Kleberg, Jr. era of quarter and thoroughbred breeding at the famed King Ranch, for example), but many of them learned to inbreed through experience, and acute powers of observation (the Hankins brothers, Jess, Lowell and J.O.; Guy Ray Rutland, Walter Merrick and Hank Weiscamp, for examples). A study of the pedigrees of the horses bred by these men, and others, quickly reveals careful inbreeding which resulted in the Peter McCues, Old Sorrels, King P-234s, Leos, Easy Jets, Skipper W’s and many other legendary sires. Most of the horses on our sale lists have the percentage of Foundation breeding noted as 100% (or less) Foundation bred. Wagon Wheel Ranch is a member of the National Foundation Quarter Horse Association, headquartered in Oregon. Therefore, our Foundation percentages are based on their method of determination. However, since we have our own computer program, for figuring these percentages, there will usually be some variation between NFQHA’s figures and ours. Consequently, if you want a precise figure, send your horse’s pedigree to NFQHA.

How to read the Data... Inbreeding Coefficient (IBC)

Relates to the number of times one or more common ancestors appear in a pedigree. The more times those specific ancestors appear on both the sire and the dam’s side of the pedigree, the higher the inbreeding coefficient. This allows you to attach a numeric value to what is also known as linebreeding. (This value does not differentiate between the terms inbreeding and linebreeding nor does it define the relationship of the common ancestors to the subject animal, i.e. father, uncles, grandfather, etc.) Linebreeding is inbreeding but to a lesser degree. For the sake of argument, inbreeding is defined as an animal having an inbreeding coefficient of (3.33%) percent or higher (which is the equivalent of a (3x3) match) and which gives the subject animal (1) or more marched pairs of chromosomes. Linebreeding is defined as a subject animal, which has common ancestors, and has an inbreeding coefficient greater than (1.80%) but less than (3.33%) percent which would give the animal less than (1) matched pair of chromosomes. Les than (1.80%) percent is considered a hybrid.

Hybrid Vigor (HV) Average -1.2% to +1.75%

A positive hybrid vigor value is typically attained when crossing two unrelated animals or when the inbreeding coefficient (Homozygosity) of the offspring is significantly less than the coefficient (Homosygosity) of the parents. Hybrid vigor is the extra vitality observed when no defective genes are expressed and allows an individual to exhibit added vigor, size, speed, etc. over that of the parents.

Probable Hybrid Vigor Breed Value (PHVBV, P)

This is the percentage of contribution of mathematical hybrid vigor by the subject horse toward its non-inbred offspring’s hybrid vigor value. The higher this value the more probable its inbred or non-inbred offspring will have hybrid vigor.

Homozygosity (HOMO, HZ, H)

The number of matched chromosome pairs out of (32) pair. The higher this number, the more likely this animal will be able to reproduce itself.

Wagon Wheel Ranch Brand

www.WagonWheelRanch.com

Walking Stick - Left Hip

With much thought & consideration, Mr. Fred G. Gist decided on the “walking stick” brand due to its simple design, clean brand on a horse and the idea that it is easily recognizable.

Butt Brand #’s

The Top or First Number is the last digit of the YEAR the foal was born. In this example, 1 is for 2011, but it could also mean 1991, 2001 or 2011 (as it is in this case). Repeating the number every tens years, of course. In the future, it could mean 2021. The following two digits are the BIRTH ORDER for that horse, the birth order in which it was born on the WWR. In this example, this was the 23rd horse born in 2011.

Rowdy Blue Man

Legendary Sires King P-234

Joe Hancock

King P-234

This stallion, in his own time, was known as the cornerstone of the industry, i.e., a legend. King P-234 bred horses had done, and could do well, virtually every task Quarter Horses were called on to perform. Therefore, even though horses of King breeding had declined in popularity, we could not find any other family which exhibited such a broad range of ability in virtually every area in which Quarter Horses are used; so we began to gather up the highest percentage King P-234 blooded horses still available. The Wagon Wheel Ranch stands the highest percentage King P-234 stallion (Gists Fifty King) and mare (Miss Fifty King Gist) alive today. We are offering many great King P-234 bred horses in this sale.

Mr. Gist was aware of Joe Hancock’s reputation as a race horse, and as a sire of race and roping horses; but it wasn’t until an employee of his told him about a blue roan Joe Hancock bred stallion, (which he knew of near Crosbyton, Texas, that was available for purchase, and insisted that Mr. Gist go look at him) that he got interested in this bloodline. Mr. Gist did purchase the stallion, and began to breed him to a variety of mares. The resulting foals were very uniform and exhibited a lot of quality. As these foals were sold, their many good qualities began to draw customers looking for Rowdy Blue Man sons and daughters. Mr. Gist learned later why “Rowdy” was such a prepotent sire – Ed Heimann’s pedigree analysis uncovered his secret – 62.5% Blue Valentine blood and four matched pairs of chromosomes! Mr. Gist then began to look for Joe Hancock bred mares, and began to haul these mares to various other high percentage Joe Hancock bred studs. The Wagon Wheel Ranch stands the highest percentage Blue Valentine bred stallion (Roan Hancock Man) alive today.

Wago n Wheel R anc h

Rowdy Blue Man was a line-bred blue roan son of Blue Valentine out of a Blue Valentine granddaughter. Like many of the Blue Valentine get, he remained in the Hayes-Merritt partnership. Hyde Merritt used him, along with Gooseberry as his pasture sires. Chip said just about any horse his dad had could be bought for the right price except Blue Valentine. He was not for sale at any price. But an offer was made on Rowdy so Hayes Brothers and Hyde made the decision to sell him. Chip Merritt, who had roped calves on Rowdy prior to his sale, admits it was probably one of their biggest mistakes. Fred Jones, Lamesa, Texas bought him and eventually Rowdy came to a permanent home at the Wagon Wheel Ranch, Lometa, Texas owned by Fred Gist. The popularity of Blue Valentines in Texas and the southwest are much due to Rowdy Blue Man and Fred Gist’s efforts. Used almost exclusively in pasture breeding. Rowdy sired 267 registered foals in twenty-two foal crops. True to his genes, Rowdy was a prolific sire to the end. In 2001, Rowdy was kicked during pasture breeding. He had to be humanely destroyed at the age of twenty-four. His offspring are very much in demand and Wagon Wheel Ranch now stands three of his sons to continue the line.

Mr. San Peppy

A good friend of Mr. Gist’s, in Midland, acquired a trailer load of King Ranch yearling stallions, and invited him to come look them over. He obliged and found that his friend had a large selection of sons of Little Peppy, Mr. San Peppy and other sons of stallions used by the King Ranch at that time. Mr. Gist picked the best-looking “King Ranch Sorrel,” with no white, out of the bunch and took him home. He was a son of Mr. San Peppy named La San Peppy. His get were sure enough good horses, and were very consistent in type. They also had a lot of ‘heart.’ So, Mr. Gist used him until he died, and then went out and bought another son of Mr. San Peppy, Hix Freckles Peppy. He continued to make the Wagon Wheel Ranch very happy with the Mr. San Peppy bloodline and Mr. San Peppy blood is still bred into our horses today. You will find several Mr. San Peppy bred horses offered in this sale.
