Once upon a time, Concord, Kannapolis and Mt. Pleasant were sleepy little towns in a sleepy little county on the outskirts of Charlotte, which also was, by national standards…sleepy. Charlotte is now a thriving metropolis – the number two banking center in the country – and Cabarrus County was recently rated one of the fasted growing regions in the country by Forbes Magazine. The change we thought had eluded us for so many decades has finally caught up – and the historic structures that have been iconic to our county are no exception. This month we are excited to give you the inside scoop on three projects that will dramatically affect the face of three of this county’s historic districts while simultaneously ushering in a new era of commerce and residential growth. Over the past year, developers have been working hard to transform the onceproud Hotel Concord into a high-end apartment building. As construction ends and leasing begins, we’ve got an inside look at the changes taking place. Dr. Allen Dobson has moved on to a new project in Mt. Pleasant. This time he’s restoring a former hosiery mill into a restaurant the likes of which Mt. Pleasant has never seen before. Finally, Kannapolis has broken ground on a 20-year renovation project that will completely change the face of its downtown. When the dust settles, there will be a new ball park for the Kannapolis Intimidators, hotels, apartments/condos and a retail center to rival that of areas like Birkdale and SouthPark. Some may say these changes are not positive. They want to desperately hold on to the past and heritage we all hold so dear. But I would encourage them to look to our bright future. These projects aren’t designed to forget our past, but rather to honor those that laid the foundation for our area by continuing their mission to press forward and keep looking ahead. Sincerely,
Jason Huddle P.S. Happy Holidays! Thanks for making this year the most successful yet for Cabarrus Magazine!

The Kannapolis Downtown Revitalization Project:
Smart Habitation THE PAST IS A PLACE OF REFERENCE, NOT A PLACE OF RESIDENCE.
Many of us remember Cannon Village this time of year. In 1980, Christmas lights twinkled in the trees lining West Avenue as we browsed the shops equally bright. David Murdock’s purchase of Cannon Mills that same decade culminated with the sale of the mill to Fieldcrest, but only the mill (Pillowtex). Murdock still owned the land. He bought back Pillowtex in 2003 after it went bankrupt and remained owner of essentially downtown Kannapolis until City of Kannapolis leaders approached him in 2015. Murdock had plans for Kannapolis, a hoped-for revitalization stemming from his anticipated $1.5-billion, 1 million-square-foot North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC). The saying ‘timing is everything’ certainly played into the project’s future, however. The recession of 2008 curbed development to three NCRC buildings totaling about 300,000 square feet. Meanwhile, vacant storefronts dotted the downtown core, the NCRC itself not enough to lure businesses in. The writing was on the wall. Annette Keller is director of communications for the City of Kannapolis. “The campus (NCRC) has been trying to recruit researchers and scientists, and one of the things we heard is that they were having a hard time recruiting because of the lack of a vibrant downtown,” she says. “Duke University conducted a research study that said the same thing, so Kannapolis City Council said, ‘That’s it, we’ve got to do something.’ ” Harken back to the early days of the textile mill. The Cannons literally built a downtown that catered to their employees who could walk out of work and

shop, eat, attend church services, go see a movie or stroll home. Everything they needed was close at hand. That’s what the Kannapolis Downtown Revitalization Project embodies. “The campus was a top priority for Mr. Murdock, so we began negotiating with him to buy downtown,” Keller says. What culminated was the City’s

purchase of 50 acres – eight blocks and some 80 properties – for $8.75 million total, financing the buy with bonds. The land encompasses Oak and West avenues, and South Main and West 1st streets. Since then, each building and piece of property has been inspected and assessed, and best potential
uses studied with the supervision of the Development Finance Initiative (DFI) at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Government. “DFI is made up of professional planners, people who have been private developers with years of experience in the field,” Keller explains. “It’s a new
component to the university. They take into account, basically, where we’re located, what’s happening around us, what’s growing, where it’s growing, population movement and business trends. You also have to look at what the city of Kannapolis has, what the median household income is and what people can spend to shop, play, etc. “Then you look at the properties and land we’ve bought, the campus and what we are lacking (taking into account housing too),” she adds. “And there were a lot of case studies. We looked at so many cities across the country – like Greenville and Charleston, SC – even internationally. So, basically, if we could dream of the most vibrant downtown for us, what would that be?” The result is a Downtown Master Plan that affirms the need for density in the form of apartments and condominiums; hotel, office and retail space; and an anchor that will bring people into downtown on a continuous basis. “What research shows over and over again is that you must have a catalyst or game-changer in your downtown,” Keller explains. “We looked at three possibilities: a performing arts center, a sports venue and a children’s museum. Sports and entertainment venues give you the most bang for your buck by far. Restaurants and bars want to be next to sports venues.” Kannapolis City Council voted for a North Option, which puts the $37-million sports and entertainment venue on currently vacant property in proximity to the NCRC. It will house the Kannapolis Intimidators while also hosting musical and cultural events. The North Option also sees 1.74 million square feet of the aforementioned residential space built in the historic district and on the former Plant 4 site (off S. Main Street); 50,000 square feet of retail space; a 90,000-square-foot multi-story office building; a performing arts center on West Avenue; and a 70,000-square-foot

hotel on Main Street. “Construction (of the sports and entertainment venue) will begin in 2018 and open in Spring 2020 for the baseball season,” according to the City of Kannapolis. “The venue is envisioned as a continuation of the West Avenue urban park.” With regard to Kannapolis’ linear
urban park, Keller explains, “You’ll be able to walk from one end of West Avenue to the other with the streetscape being sectioned off in ‘rooms.’ All these relaxation spaces have been purposefully designed; it’s a destination accessible to the public and tieing in with the City’s ‘Healthy Life’ brand.” The City and its investors are

The Master Plan What DFI presented as a Downtown Master Plan to Kannapolis City Council is outlined on the City’s website as: • Anchors: A sports and entertainment complex and a performing arts center. Anchors are projects that bring significant numbers of people to an area – consistently. Anchors also stimulate spinoff growth in the restaurant, retail and residential sectors. • Hotel: A boutique hotel would be used by visitors to the area, conference attendees, the North Carolina Research Campus, sports teams and so forth. • Multi-story office complex: Creates job opportunities in downtown. • Residential Living: Condominiums and apartments woven throughout the entire downtown with the highest concentration on the former Plant 4 site. • Historic Preservation: The plan includes saving the most historic block of buildings in the downtown, such as the GEM Theatre. • Retail/Restaurant Space: A mix of small and large spaces which will offer goods and services, but also create entrepreneurship and employment opportunities. • Water Feature: A unique aesthetic that creates a healthy living environment. • Plazas: Large green spaces that would flow from the north to the south end of downtown. These spaces encourage people to enjoy the outdoors. • Streetscape: West Avenue would be reconfigured with a curved tree-lined design that creates more outdoor dining and green spaces. Trees would be preserved and additional trees added. • Connectivity and Livability: Sidewalks, bicycle lanes and adequate parking that allow seamless movement between the anchors, office, hotel, campus and residential areas. This creates a feeling of healthy living, community and neighborhood. Source: City of Kannapolis
covering the $113-million cost of the infrastructure improvements and streetscape; the sports and entertainment complex; and the performing arts center as well as a parking deck. They do not want to be property owners, however, and that’s where private investors come in.

“We want to sell the properties,” Keller says. “LMG is buying the property they’re developing. That money will go back in to pay for the next phase. Then we’ll sell the next property. But we have to start first.” Keller refers to LMG – Lansing Melbourne Group – based in Fort
Lauderdale, FL. As urban planners, the firm has purchased nearly four acres – about two blocks – on West Avenue with an appraised value of $1.64 million. This first piece of the revitalization puzzle is called the Demonstration Project. “We had to find someone to invest money and be the catalyst for the start of this project,” Keller says. LMG has named its project VIDA, a mixed-use development of 275 residential apartments, 19,000 square feet of new retail space and 34,000 square feet of renovated retail space (old Cabarrus Bank building block) in its first phase. Phase II will include a 106-room hotel or more apartments. LMG’s $60-million investment should bring in about $378,000 in city property taxes and $420,000 in county property taxes each year. So, what happens to the dozen or so businesses still open downtown? “When we bought the property two years ago we knew that, as we began the research and adopted the master plan, we’d have to move some of the existing businesses. At that point, there were not a lot of businesses left. Over the last two years, Irene Sacks, Kannapolis’ director of business & community affairs, has done a lot of talking to businesses and what’s envisioned,” Keller shares. “Some can stay where they are…Wells Fargo, the Gem Theatre, Pizza Hut. We’re asking everyone to bear with us because construction is no fun; there are going to be road closures.” And what about downtown’s buildings? Structures on Main Street and West Avenue were built between the 1920s and ‘60s. “The Gem Theatre block of buildings will be saved,” Keller says. “Downtown didn’t used to look like this; from the 1960s to ‘80s, it was given that Williamsburg look. The buildings from the outside look good. On the inside, the wiring is terrible, the plumbing, the roofs. You have to look at renovating versus the cost of replacing. We’re trying to preserve what

heritage and history we can.” An official project kicking-off event was held on October 26 that saw Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant joined by City Council members, City Manager Mike Legg and Deputy City Manager Eddie Smith. Together, they ceremoniously sledgehammered the exterior brick of the former K-Town Furniture store building. While this was the first structure to be torn down, project preparation was already underway. Power poles were coming down – being replaced
with underground lines – and new water, sewer and stormwater lines are being installed. Twenty-first century technology will exist downtown as well. As this work progresses, the City of Kannapolis will continue seeking out private investors for additional office, residential, hotel and retail segments of the project. It’s expected that private investment will total about $378 million over the next 20 years. Upon completion, that could mean $2.3 million in city tax revenues and $2.6
million in county tax revenues annually. “We have a lot of people who are talking to us now that LMG’s plans are finalized,” Keller says. It’s also not lost on her or City government that 20 years seems like a long journey to completion, but good things will happen all along the way. And for this city of 46,000, it’s been a long time coming. A lot hinges on this plan, which could see their downtown become the next urban oasis. For all those involved, it’s a very exciting time. n

The hosiery mill’s bricked-up windows and entryway have been restored to their former glory.

73 & Main: At a Crossroads IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT MT. PLEASANT IS KNOWN MORE FOR ITS CHARM AND BEAUTIFUL, HISTORIC HOMES THAN ITS NIGHTLIFE.
Those who want to shop at malls or join friends for an evening out on the town have to drive to a nearby city. While that may be fine by some, there are those motivated to make Mt. Pleasant more of a destination. Dr. Allen Dobson is also known more for his medical experience as a family practitioner than as a commercial property developer. But that hasn’t stopped him and his partners – Dr. Charles Rhodes and Tom Earnhardt – at Mt. Pleasant Properties, LLC, from investing in this community. A listing of Cabarrus County manufacturers in 1879 included gristmills, blacksmiths, druggists and textile mills owned by names like Barringer, Eudy and Moose in, then, Township #8. At the corner of Franklin and Main streets stood Shimpock-Melchor Store. Built in the 1840s and owned by John Shimpock and Christopher Melchor, it became The Mercantile when John B. McAllister and Edward Crowell took it over in 1912. According to usgwarchives.net, “This building also housed the office of Dr. Patterson – a local dentist – and a portion of the store also housed the Post Office for a time. A 1921 insurance map shows a furniture store located on the site. “In 1932, Lee and Paul Foil built the Mt. Pleasant Hosiery Mill on the site. The mill was later owned by the Leatherman family and was eventually sold to Arrowood Mills who, in turn, sold it to Holt Hosiery Mill.” Mt. Pleasant Hosiery closed its doors in 2008. Having been owned by Robin Hayes since 1991 and housing his office for a time, he donated the building to the Town of Mt. Pleasant. The Town then sold it to Mt. Pleasant Properties. “This began over a year ago. My partners and I – the founders of Cabarrus Family Medicine – wanted to invest in helping the town grow. It seemed that restoring one of the town’s historic buildings was a great opportunity to help,” Dobson shares. “We investigated its history and got excited about restoring such a great building in the town center. When we looked at possible uses and the needs of Mt. Pleasant, we decided that a nice steak restaurant or brewery might be an ideal use. I live two blocks away, and our friends and neighbors have often wished for a steak restaurant or nice special occasion restaurant.”

The Mercantile Dining Room will serve entrees like steaks and seafood.
Named 73 & Main, and with a budget of more than $2 million, Dr. Dobson serves as major investor and project manager on this endeavor. We say this because there has been another. Mt. Pleasant Properties purchased the old Cabarrus County Correctional Facility on Dutch Road, which closed in 2011. Last year, Southern Grace Distilleries leased about 20,000
16 Cabarrus Magazine n
of the prison’s 30,000 square feet. It’s been a hit, bringing in tourism dollars that Dobson and his partners enthusiastically hope to see repeated at 73 & Main. Scheduled to open for business this month, 73 & Main is a multi-faceted dining/entertainment experience. The 15,000-plus-square-foot building houses the Mercantile Dining Room,
which serves as the main eatery. A reclaimed barn wood wall separates it from the more casual Hosiery Mill Pub. The pub has 32 beer taps behind the bar, flanking a large TV. Tall wooden cabinets were uncovered that are also being utilized. “Old cabinets from the mercantile are being used throughout the building,” Dobson says. “We put two behind the bar. They were two-sided, so we cut the back off to fit them inside the bar area.” The adjacent kitchen has a chef’s table that can be reserved by patrons wanting to view the cooking. Behind the dining room, the Bourbon Tasting Bar will offer some 50 different bourbons. “It’s another bar area adjacent to the patio; kind of an adultsonly bar,” Dobson adds. “We even have space for a nano-brewery.” Patrons can then walk out the nearby door to the Old Well Patio. Named after the hand-built stone well uncovered by workers during construction, the covered patio was designed around it. The area can be utilized year-round with its woodburning fireplace. The new elevator takes groups to the Finishing Room upstairs. Able to accommodate 99 people, it will serve as a rentable event space, complete with tall, expansive windows and catering kitchen. Because the former hosiery mill is part of the downtown district listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Dobson had to follow guidelines when restoring the space. Construction was like peeling an onion, uncovering treasures hidden for decades. “We very carefully took the (exterior) paint off. That took almost a month. In the early 1900s, they did the buildings out of red brick. A faux type of finish went into the brick underneath,” he says. “These are the original wood floors and the original windowpanes were in there. There were only two or three panes that had to be replaced. The tin
ceiling is original where possible, then patched to match. We lost about half due to rust and deterioration.” What makes this restaurant unique is the configuration of the individual spaces and entrances. “People can walk into various doorways depending on where they want to go,” Dobson says. “One entrance takes you directly to the elevator, one opens directly into the restaurant, one from the patio to the bourbon bar, one into the pub, etc. “The concept and vision for the interior was to be true to history – provide a number of dining experiences within a single restaurant. We plan to partner with the Eastern Cabarrus Historic Society and the museum to showcase our history.” Dobson is equally excited about his staff. General Manager Anthony Misuraca and Executive Chef Tim Chung came from Epic Chophouse in Mooresville. While Misuraca wasn’t looking to change employers, he had trouble saying no to Dr. Dobson. “This is more than a restaurant. We are developing an area of Cabarrus County. We are going to put a restaurant in the middle of a beautiful little town,” Misuraca says. He’s also had the luxury of providing input during the construction process. “Having an opportunity to make something flow better or work more efficiently will save us a ton of money and stress in the long run. The crew from LCJ Construction has been more than a construction company. They have cared about what would give us
the best outcome every step of the way. “Running a restaurant of this size means you wear many hats in many different departments. I will be a coach, a teammate and a leader.” While there have been some concerns about parking, Dobson says a municipal parking lot adjacent to the restaurant – across the street on S. Main – was in the works before his project was planned. There are also a couple of retail spaces next to the restaurant that will likely be rented out later.
In the meantime, Dobson will have his hand in getting 73 & Main off the ground. He’s not sure about future projects. “This one has been pretty complex and stressful. I might want to take a little break. But I’m going to show up every once in a while and wash dishes,” he laughs. “This has great walking potential for those in town; and we’re hoping people from Concord and surrounding areas will just come and enjoy it too. You won’t have to fight traffic!” n

HEATHER, six years old, must have been someone’s pet; she’s spayed and has had medical care. What we don't know is how this sweet girl ended up abandoned in an apartment complex parking lot to fend for herself. Compound this with the fact that Heather is missing a front leg and is deaf. However, this girl holds no grudges – you couldn’t ask for a sweeter girl. She tolerates other cats, but prefers they keep their distance. She’s going to make a wonderful companion for that special someone. Reduce Falls in Your Home “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” It’s a commercial that’s been taken lightly, but falls are a serious concern, especially for our loved ones in the senior age category. Currently, about 10,000 people turn 65 each day in the U.S. With that comes a rise in cost. As a local medical equipment provider, we hear stories from our customers every day. Most involve ambulance transport, hospital stay with surgery and weeks of rehab at a nursing home afterwards. And, unfortunately, in some stories, the loved one never makes it home. Gravity exists; therefore, falls will occur. There are ways to significantly reduce the risk of falls in your home, however. Here are some actions to take and products that will help to reduce falls in your home. • Remove trip hazards. • Keep your floors free of clutter. • Avoid reaching for your things. • Schedule a yearly eye exam. • Discuss falls with your doctor. • Ask your pharmacist which medications cause dizziness. • Increase physical activity. • Do not stay home because you think you will fall. • Wear proper footwear. • Light it up at night. • Fall-proof your bathroom. • Use mobility assistive devices. • Consider a personal emergency response system. There are many things to consider when working to reduce falls. Please take action now with yourself or your senior loved ones. Don’t become the one out of four senior adults who fall each year.
If you need help selecting products for your specific situation, we invite you to come by our 2,500-square-foot medical equipment showroom. We

The View at Hotel Concord: Live It. CABARRUS MAGAZINE LAST SAT DOWN WITH PATRICK REILLY TWO YEARS AGO AS HE WAS WRAPPING UP THE CONSTRUCTION OF LOFTS 29.
New blends with old – new electrical, repaired plaster, thoughtful lighting, repurposed doors...
20 Cabarrus Magazine n
The former Heilig-Meyers furniture store sits at the corner of Cabarrus Avenue and Church Street in Concord. As president of Winston-Salem-based Rehab Development, Reilly and his team transformed the empty building into a historically correct community of apartments. We say historically correct because the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which, like 73 & Main in Mt. Pleasant, meant abiding by a set of guidelines in returning these old structures to what they would have looked like when originally built. Back then, Reilly had already been inside Hotel Concord several times. He knew he wanted to tackle the project of its restoration as well, and already had an idea in his head. “We started pretty quickly after finishing Lofts 29, but this sale was more complicated,” he shares. “Union Street Corporation owned the hotel but not the rooms above the bank. They have 170 different shareholders and a board of directors. They wanted to make sure the building was going to be historically preserved. “The Telephone Exchange building, the bank and the parking lot behind it were owned by the bank. Fortunately, I was able to deal directly with the bank president in Cincinnati.” The bank Reilly refers to is Fifth Third. After buying First Charter, they consolidated their branch locations and closed the one at the corner of Union
Rehab Development has taken on restoration of Hotel Concord as well as the bank space on the corner and the Concord Telephone Exchange Company building.

Street and Cabarrus Avenue. The Concord Telephone Exchange building is located behind the bank space on Cabarrus Avenue. Rehab Development began project demolition in December 2016. With regard to challenges, Reilly says, “There were a few…nothing that we haven’t seen before. The building is very structurally sound, constructed of steel and plaster.”
22 Cabarrus Magazine n
Hotel Concord was built in 1926. As the largest historic property in Cabarrus County – 46,536 square feet – its immensity is overwhelming. With no electricity during construction, it’s like stepping back in time. Three dusty clocks hang on the wall over the checkin counter: New York, London and Paris time zones suspended. Elaborate moldings and scrollwork adjacent to peeling paint; an elevator
with gated metal door and crystal light fixture; beautiful stone tile floors and marble stairways with curved wooden handrails…it’s difficult to take it all in. Then you go upstairs. Reilly’s plan is seeing the conversion of the tired, dilapidated hotel space into 38 apartments; the project is named The View at Hotel Concord. Walls separating one hotel room from another have come down. New electrical wiring runs through exposed sheaths to new receptacles covered by repainted original plates. Hotel room doors have been kept and painted while some interior doors have been sealed into the apartment’s wall, becoming a unique part of the architecture. “The floors in the apartments themselves will be a stained concrete, and then we’ll have VCT (vinyl composite) tiles in the hallways,” Reilly says. “All the old walls are going
to be plastered – finished like the old hotel – new walls will be sheetrock. The kitchens will have solid-surface granite countertops and three units have private patios. There will be a gym, community space with TVs and a bar area. “There are six two-bedroom apartments, the rest are studios or one-bedrooms. Some have a bedroom but don’t have a door, so, technically, they’re studios.” Original plans saw apartment sizes ranging from 385 to 882 square feet with rental rates from about $950 to 1,600 per month. Like Lofts 29, the rent includes all utilities, Internet and cable TV. A gray and tan color scheme is being used on the apartment walls/trim, and windows or panes are new – and large – offering some one-of-a-kind views of Concord’s historic downtown. There is also a mezzanine-level rooftop patio for residents. While the ballroom space has been in operation within Hotel Concord,
A floor plan of the upper apartments in The View at Hotel Concord
Reilly had to approach Lynn Neal, its manager, about closing it down for a year. Reilly says she was nervous but has been able to book events in other venues during construction. The ballroom will get new paint and a sprucing up; its flooring will remain exactly as it was. The Concord Telephone Exchange building has two larger apartment
units above two ground floor commercial spaces with great storefronts. At the opposite end of the building – closest to Central United Methodist – more retail space is available. “There are 18,000 square feet of non-residential space in that building. Lynn’s space takes up half of that. We have excellent space on Union, at the
December 2017 23 n
end right next to the church. That’s 1,300 square feet. We have two other smaller spaces on Union that we’re talking to people with, potentially for a market,” Reilly shares. A market had once been considered for the bank space on the corner, but Reilly says, “There’s about 3,600 square feet above ground and another 1,400 square feet in the basement. We haven’t really identified an end-user for that space. It would be possible to put a restaurant in there as long as
24 Cabarrus Magazine n
there is proper firewall separation. A lot of it looks so cool that can easily be incorporated: a nice mezzanine level, a wide open dome ceiling. We want to find the right long-term user that would be a good fit in downtown. We don’t feel we have to do that right now.” While completion of The View at Hotel Concord was slated for the end of December, Reilly says, “Most units will be close to completion by the end of the year. We plan on moving people
in, in mid-February. We started off the project with a budget of about $5.3 million, but now it’s closer to $6.2 million.” Nest Property Management is handling apartment leasing. Resident parking will be located in the parking lot behind Hotel Concord. The rear entrance is being equipped with a lift, providing handicap accessibility. Rehab Development was able to use historic tax credits in the restoration of Lofts 29 and Hotel Concord. However, the House GOP tax overhaul looks to eliminate the 20 percent federal investment tax credit for historic preservation projects. Reilly is passionate about the subject, saying, “They’re looking to cut all tax credit programs. Without Federal and State Historic Tax Credits, a project of this type would not have worked. If Federal tax credits get cut, projects like the Hotel Concord – across the country – will not be feasible. Two renovation projects across from Congressman Hudson’s campaign office would not have happened without Historic Tax Credits.” The elimination of the credits would have a direct, negative economic impact on downtown districts as well. Besides losing employment opportunities, a study conducted by Place Economics in 2014 projects that Hotel Concord’s apartments could bring more than $414,000 into downtown’s economy. n

Cabarrus Chef Challenge 2017
Cabarrus Health Alliance is hosting a Cabarrus Chef Challenge again this year. Students from four Cabarrus County high schools are competing against each other in a tournament being held at Kannapolis’ Restaurant 46 on December 11 through 13 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Much like the popular TV show, Chopped, students are given 45 minutes to cook an appetizer, main course and dessert. They can utilize a pantry, but only two students are allowed in the pantry at a time. Meghan Charpentier is program coordinator for Cabarrus Chef Challenge Cabarrus Health Alliance (CHA). In 2015, she was first 2016 approached about the challenge idea by school nurses at Northwest Cabarrus High School and Cox Mill High School. It has since become an exciting annual event. This year, local police officers as well as esteemed chefs from our local area serve as judges. The ultimate hope, along with the fun of it all, is to raise awareness of health-conscious eating and cooking. Goals include team building using healthy foods. As a nutritionist, Charpentier enjoys watching teams communicate, coming up with recipes based on the foods available to them. She’s also impressed with their knowledge of nutrition, culinary skills and creativity. They’re forced to put together a themed meal under time constraints and specific guidelines. For more information about Cabarrus Chef Challenge, contact Charpentier at Meghan.Charpentier@CabarrusHealth.org or call 704-920-1324.

Southern Grace Releases First Bourbon: Conviction Southern Grace Distilleries is the first distillery to be located in a former prison in the U.S., and their first bourbon, Conviction Small Batch Bourbon, was released last month. The hard time aging in oak barrels behind bars has created a cask strength bourbon that was described by reviewer, John Trump on Liquor.com: “It’s remarkably smooth and complex. The nose reveals ripe cherries and a comforting hint of cinnamon, bringing to mind warm apples covered in brown sugar. A sip offers hints of honey and just a touch of oak. The barley brings a soft sweetness, much like an Irish whisky, especially after adding a drop of water. Soft vanilla and bright orange linger on the palate.” Conviction Small Batch Bourbon was also awarded a gold medal at the MicroLiquor Spirit Awards in Beverly Hills, CA. Southern Grace Distilleries is located at Mt. Pleasant Prison, 130 Dutch Road in Mt. Pleasant. For a tasting, contact Leanne Powell at 704-622-6413 or email leannepowell@gmail.com.
