Aerial’s taxi operators received a letter recently explaining a new arrangement between Aerial and Canberra Toyota to cut the cost of owning and maintaining a taxi vehicle. Things are moving with the first fully managed new Toyota taxi deal approved. Aerial now has approximately 12% of the fleet running hybrid vehicles. Aerial’s driver point trial has now been in place for over three months and the data collected offers some interesting insight. Points are deducted from drivers for job rejects and job recalls and the driver doing a valid pickup within 6 minutes wins points. After only three months it is good to know that we have drivers, only a few, with a near perfect score. The challenge in designing an effective permanent driver points program will be in setting incentives and penalties to move the majority of the fleet closer to a perfect score. Aerial will consult widely on the various options and circulate a discussion paper before ending the trial. We will discuss the data collected so far with ACT Taxi Directorate staff as a first step. Our Canberra Elite web site has a new driver training video that should be seen by everyone in the taxi industry – “Working with Passengers with Disabilities”. It has been prepared by 13Cabs in Melbourne and is being distributed throughout the Taxi Industry. It contains important customer service messages that everyone in our industry should readily practice, every time.

With slippery roads, thick fog and freezing temperatures greeting drivers at every turn its official that winter has arrived. These conditions throw up a number of issues for Taxi Drivers. These issues include drivers applying safe driving techniques, delays at the Airport, keeping taxis clean with so much moisture in the air and drivers wearing network approved jackets. When driving in these conditions it’s important that all drivers remember how important it is to adjust driving styles to the conditions. If visibility is low due to fog then adjust speed accordingly and give more room between your taxi and the car in front to allow for sufficient stopping distance in an emergency situation. Delays at the Airport due to fog preventing planes from landing are a real frustration to the taxi industry. It leads to potential customers not catching taxis due to cancellation in travel and drivers getting stuck at the Airport for extensive periods of time without the meter ticking over. The commissionaires are working hard towards making sure the Contact Centre is aware of the situation on the ground at the Airport. This allows the Contact Centre to provide up to date messaging to drivers regarding flight arrivals. As mentioned in previous editions of Cabberra we are finding a number of dirty

Taxis sitting on ranks around the city. Remember fog does not mean it is going to rain. Once the fog has cleared usually a bright blue sunny day is not far behind. We are finding a lot of dirty taxis sitting at the Airport rank at 2pm in perfect sunny conditions. Remember fog will bring moisture but once cleared will result in mostly clear days. So make sure the taxi is clean at all times. Moving away from issues related to the weather conditions, Aerial wants to congratulate the commissionaires on the praise they have been receiving from customers who are passing through the rank. This creates a great image of the taxi industry. Well done guys! We also wanted to talk about communication between drivers and the Contact Centre. In the past month there have been a few issues between CC staff and drivers. Both groups of workers are working in high pressure jobs with peak and off- peak periods and it is so important that patience and professionalism is displayed at all times. We know as a driver it can be extremely frustrating when a booking is a no show or there are problems with the details on a booking, but please remember that the dispatcher on the other end of the query channel is not the enemy. When speaking
with the dispatcher please remember to speak calmly and clearly. Screaming or yelling over the radio only makes communication harder and increases the stress levels of everyone involved. In closing some of you would have presented to the base recently to have Cabcharge Fareway units installed. Please note that fareway units must be installed in all taxis on the Aerial radio network. Please do your best to cooperate with Aerial workshop staff by meeting appointment times. We understand this is down time for both driver and operator but it will improve the service you will be able to offer to taxi customers. Also taxis have now had their sim cards in their MT data brains changed over from Telstra to Vodafone. A big thank you to all the drivers who took time out to present to the base and have the sim cards swapped over. Good effort by everyone well done! That’s all for this edition of Fleet News. TRAINING ROOM Hello all, I have been talking to John who does the majority of our practical assessments for new drivers, and he has passed on to me a method he teaches people for changing lanes when he is teaching defensive driving. He uses the word AMISS, which stands for ahead, mirrors, indicate, shoulder and steer. This is the order you should be doing things to make changing lanes safe. Ahead: Check the road ahead of you to make sure that there is nothing that will make changing lanes dangerous. Before you change lanes maintain a safe distance from the car in front so that when you do a
head check you will be safe if the car slows down. Mirrors: Check all your mirrors for traffic. You should be constantly checking your mirrors while driving to make yourself aware of where other cars are at all times and how fast they are travelling. Indicate: Then indicate to show your intention of changing lanes. Shoulder: Look over your shoulder (head check) quickly to make sure there is no traffic in your blind spot. ALWAYS make sure you do a head check before changing lanes, it is very easy for a car or motorbike to be in your blind spot without you noticing, especially if you are not in the
habit of constantly checking your mirrors. Steer: ONLY after you have done all the above should you start to steer your car into the other lane. A lot of you already do this I imagine but it is good to have it laid out in words so that you can consciously be aware of the procedure to change lanes safely. Take care all,

JOB NUMB3RS AND TH3 FUTUR3 We have just past the halfway mark of 2014, and although taxi business is still very quite, the jobs per car per day appears to have risen by close to one during the month of May. This does not necessarily mean that Canberra is becoming busy. On the contrary, it reflects the drop in the number of active taxis. The excessive number of taxis on the road in 2013, led to the surrender of around 27 taxis (8.5%) that were in the Aerial fleet, so the increase in the number of trips per car per day means that the taxi industry is still treading water. One indicator that the industry is at least treading water is that only a few licences have handed back in the first half of 2014. The rise in trip numbers during May appears to indicate that the presence of parliamentarians in town will continue to bring more work despite the promise of job cuts in the public service. The longer-term outlook should be helped by the increased migration
rate experienced by Canberra during 2013, and hopefully into the future. Of course it is the job of tourism officials to promote Canberra, as is the job of taxi drivers, but the deputy director of Visit Canberra partly attributes last year’s 6100-population increase to the centenary promotions (Canberra Times 20th June). Of course, Canberra cabbies played a part in those promotions.

The targets for the first and second time lapses are 85% and 95%. On top of the outstanding service delivery, at least fifty vehicles in the Canberra taxi fleet have been replaced this year. So the fleet is looking better. So the industry is well placed to handle any increase in work that may

Many drivers would be aware that a smart phone app supplier has been attempting to establish a foothold in the Canberra taxi industry. Newspaper articles written by journalists who usually display a dismal ignorance of the true facts relating to the taxi industry have from time to time provided these suppliers with free publicity.

job when he already had one. One driver said he receives a bonus for each trip he does through an outside app. Who, then pays for the service? Is it the passenger through a credit card? Does this app ever accept a booking from a passenger who wants to pay cash?
One thing a driver should ask a prospective outside app salesperson, is for a guarantee that any passenger work the app company receives will be dispatched only to a taxi. Uber X, which is attempting to establish itself in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, dispatches work to any driver who attaches to it whether he/she is a taxi driver in a taxi or person in a Mazda 3 looking for an extra dollar, and who has not been required to pay accreditation fees, taxi compulsory third party insurance, or perform the usual taxi driver tests.
What if every driver signed up for one of these apps? Even if all the outside app work was to be dispatched through the local taxi fleet, there would be no more work to share than there is now and drivers who cheat now would accept trip offers when they were engaged, force the passenger to wait longer and deprive other drivers of work to which they were entitled. The latent demand is fully met, so there would be no extra work to share. But if any of the outside app work were to be dispatched to drivers of “non-taxis”, then the taxi industry and its drivers would be the biggest losers.
A driver might think it would be handy to be linked with an outside app so he/she could occasionally pick up an extra job. One fellow, who said he had signed up in Canberra, gave the app away because it often offered him a

The reality is, outside phone apps are only attaching themselves to the taxi industry for what they can milk out of it. Where are their plans to provide for people with disabilities? Where is their lost property policy? Where is their guarantee that only licenced taxi drivers in licenced taxis will be offered taxi type work? Canberra Elite has its own increasingly popular web based app, which offers every member of the public the opportunity to make use of one of the best performing taxi services in the country. In both South Australia and the Northern Territory, the governments have legislated against the use of any but taxi group affiliated apps and in Melbourne, drivers performing Uber work are being fined around $1750. Something to think about.

PRATIK THAKUR ONLY RECENTLY STARTED DRIVING TAXIS FOR FEW MONTHS Are you a past night or day driver? I drive both days and nights, doing a few shifts a week. Are you originally from Canberra? If not why did you move to Canberra? I am originally from Canberra and been here for a long time. What do you like most about your job and why did you choose it? The best part of being a taxi driver is that I get to drive around Canberra and meet different types of people on the way. It is a good job that is flexible and every shift and passenger is different. Any memorable stories to share with us (it can be good or bad experience even a funny one)? A great experience I have had is with a passenger that was going from city to theairport. They were interested in the
world cup as much as I was, and we pretty much had an exciting conversation and a pleasant drive to the airport. It didn’t feel like work, but more of a casual trip. What do you think of the industry now? What improvements could be made? The industry is currently very competitive. Initiatives need to be taken to ensure that more customers use taxis. By providing good customer service and building a consistent client base it will help improve the industry. The drivers should also be involved and play a vital role when the base and the government are making decisions and changes to the system and industry, greater cooperation will lead to better results. What advice would you give newer drivers? New drivers should understand that there are ups and downs with every shift. Some shifts are good and some not so good. The important thing is to stay positive and provide good customer service; this in turn will lead to more passengers and
more jobs. New drivers should listen to experienced drivers, as they generally give good advice and understand the industry much better than new drivers. By understanding the industry the higher chances there are to get a better shift.

Cavalry and Canberra Elite Cabs announce naming rights partnership Canberra, ACT – The Canberra Cavalry, in coordination with the Australian Baseball League, announced that Canberra Elite Cabs, a subsidiary of Aerial Capital Group will be the new naming rights partner of the Cavalry at a press conference today. The two organisations entered into a multi-year deal, branding the team the “Canberra Elite Cavalry” for the foreseeable future. “We are very excited about this community based partnership,” Cavalry CEO Thom Carter said. “We have always felt like our team and players are elite, we know that the experience here at the Fort on game day is elite, now we have the name to show it.” Canberra Elite Cabs have been part of the Canberra fabric since 1957, providing quality and safe transportation to the residence and visitors to the Australian Capital Territory. Over the years they have had partnerships with the Brumbies, the National Gallery, and ClubsACT. After unveiling the new team logo that incorporates the “Canberra Elite” brand, Carter continued, “Canberra Elite Cabs have always shown a great commitment to this community and to our fans. They have been proud partners of the organisation for years and we have worked together to ensure that fans and families have safe and easy transportation to and from the ballpark. This long-term agreement signals a continual partnership between this great company and the community they serve. Joining Carter, Aerial Capital Managing Director Mark Bramston spoke of their reasoning and desire to expand their partnership with the Cavalry. “Aerial Capital Group is keen to be a part of the Canberra Cavalry’s future development. With the support of local business and the community, we believe that the new stadium will be one of Canberra’s great successes”. Canberra Elite Cabs take over as naming rights partner from Rolfe Renault, who held the distinction for the past two seasons. “We are grateful for the continual support that Richard Rolfe OAM and Rolfe Renault provide to the Cavalry,” Carter said. They will continue on as a major partner of the organisation. With the new partnership the Cavalry are encouraging fans to now “Catch A Cab” to and from the ballpark and to remember that just as players are driven home safely to score runs, Canberra Elite Cabs can drive you home safely wherever you are. The Canberra Elite Cavalry season gets underway on Thursday, 6 November against the rival Sydney Blue Sox at the Fort in Narrabundah. After coming off winning the Asia Series in November 2012, a first for any ABL team, as well as winning the 2012-13 ABL season and coming runner up in the 2013-14 ABL Season, the team hopes to continue the winning tradition. IMPORTANT NOTICE CANBERRA AIRPORT - TAXI OPERATIONS SECURITY AND EMERGENCY REQUIREMENTS
FRONT OF HOUSE SECURITY It has become clear that taxi drivers have not adopted the front of house security management protocols and restrictions of taxi vehicle access in close proximity to the terminal building. It is an important security requirment that drivers are not to leave their vehicles unattended at any time whilst in the taxi feeder area.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE & EVACUATION PROCEDURES The taxi feeder area is a designated access route for responding emergency services vehicles to the terminal building. From an emergency planning and evacuation perspective, it is important to maintain access facilitation from the taxi holding area through to the taxi rank. It is critical to prevent obstruction of emergency agencies servicing the terminal in an emergency situation where a full evacuation may be necessary. Drivers are required to exclusively use the taxi facilities within the holding area; where in an emergency incident will be able to vacate the area in a prompt manner. If drivers are required to use the terminal facilities such as the prayer room or cafes for example, drivers are respectfully asked to use the general public parking areas to do so. The Airport CSO staff and law enforcement will monitor the feeder area to ensure the security and access arrangements in place are adhered to by the taxi fleet.
