TRADE ASSOCIATION REPRESENTING THE INDUSTRY

Since we launched our new campaign to support, combat and engage the industry over apprenticeships and the skills gap, it has been encouraging to see the appetite for apprenticeships gather even more traction over the past few weeks. It has been so encouraging that even other publications are jumping on the bandwagon – albeit a little late in the day. However, being first to Champion initiatives comes as second nature to CM, which has been evident in our long heritage dating back to 1880. I welcome the wider awareness for such campaigns as apprenticeships, and stress that our ongoing work with industry bodies in this field, such as FIESTA, keeps Cabinet Maker at the forefront and ahead of the game. So far, it’s rewarding to see the industry engage and follow suit. Since National Apprenticeship Week – and CM’s unveiling of our latest project last month – it is pleasing to see my inbox filled with positive apprenticeship success stories and others keen to get involved. Being the first industry trade journal to set the stage for more apprenticeship-focused features, and without giving away any future spoilers, there is plenty more to come for the remainder of the year on this topic. So, as ever, the invitation to share your story is firmly open. One area of the Apprenticeship Debate that I found particularly interesting this week is how difficult it can be for young people in schools and colleges to get accurate information and guidance about apprenticeships. It poses the question: In sixth forms and colleges, are pupils still being steered towards the traditional university route? And why does this stigma stick? The Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Collaborative Outreach Programme (DANCOP) – which somewhat gives me a stance that I’m policing this issue – shared its thoughts on the matter, stating that perhaps teachers are under pressure to lean towards university, or maybe schools see the university route as a badge of honour.

Or perhaps it is just a fundamental lack of knowledge that needs to be addressed – which is surprising in today’s world, especially from learning establishments. DANCOP is in partnership with a number of universities and colleges from across its area and works together to raise the aspirations of young people and support them to consider their futures. It’s associations such as these that will spearhead the continuing battle in closing the skills gap. While the aforementioned statement gives food for thought, this week’s editorial offers a lighter refreshment of latest developments across the industry. There is an insight at what to expect to see at this month’s HKTDC Hong Kong International Home Textiles and Furnishings Fair, as well as a first time editorial appearance from fitted furniture business Metro Wardrobes. There is also an update from Belgian textile company Ter Molst, which talks recent investments, appearance in London and future plans, whilst concluding with an anniversary celebration from retailer Wren Kitchens, as the business reaches its 10-year milestone. To sign off this week’s issue I ask every reader to spare a thought for the family of Matt O’Flynn. Well known in the industry, the former British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) chairman, the Long Eaton Guild of Furniture of Manufacturers chairman, Collins & Hayes MD and director of digital agency Orbital Vision, has sadly passed away at the age of 44 years old. Mr O’Flynn’s wife Moira announced the sad news through his Facebook page that Matt died peacefully surrounded by his family at St Michael’s Hospice in St Leonards-on-Sea on 29 March 2019. From everyone here at Cabinet Maker, our condolences go out to his family and friends at this difficult time. Dan Squires Editor

Student designs new range at furniture firm Modular furniture specialist Sui Generis has announced the launch of six new designs after forming a collaboration with a student. The company has expanded its GeoMet collection with six new designs from young furniture and product design undergraduate, Ben Whittaker, 20, (pictured) who studies at the Nottingham Trent University. Ben has been working at GeoMet for the past six months and his talent for design has ‘really shone through’ during the seating and planter designs partnership. Commenting on the launch, Sean Milbank, chairman of Sui Generis, explains: “It became clear that Ben has a very strong talent for design, so we challenged him to create new pieces for our GeoMet collection. “We were keen to support Ben through the process and to invest in bringing his designs from concept through to production. “Ben created more than 100 designs, which were eventually whittled down to his top 15, after several meetings with staff at Sui Generis. “He also worked with the production team that creates furniture moulds to understand whether each of his designs would be practical to manufacture. Thanks to their hands-on advice and feedback from the board, the top six seats were chosen.” Ben, who has ambitions to set-up his own furniture design studio, is excited that he’s been given the opportunity to see his designs go into production. He said: “I was tasked to design a new module for Sui Generis’s current range. “I was given free rein over what I designed, but I wanted to give a new look and style which also complements the existing range. It’s a student’s dream to see your designs go from paper to production! “My work experience with Sui Generis has been an amazing opportunity. I’ve been supported every step of the way and I’ve learnt so much. “I’ve worked in the factory with the seating teams and helped to create the final moulds for the composite seats. It’s also been really interesting selecting the wooden materials for the slats on one new statement seat. The new seats look amazing and I couldn’t be more pleased.”

Soft furnishings supplier plots expansion Northern Irish soft furnishings distributor Bedeck has earmarked plans to expand its operations at its headquarters. According to a planning application submitted to Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Bedeck wants to demolish an 8,000sq ft warehouse at its site on Lurgan Road in Magheralin and replace it with a new 20,000sq ft distribution hub. It is understood that the project, which will see Bedeck more than double its current warehouse capacity, will see the company invest around £1m. Detailed within the planning documents, the expansion will feature a new showroom, office space, storage space and welfare facilities. Established in 1951, bedding supplier Bedeck has two stores in its home country, located in Belfast and Dungannon, as well as over 30 House of Fraser concessions across the UK and Ireland.

Kitchen firm prepares for Brexit impact German kitchen furniture manufacturer Rotpunkt has issued a statement of intent for the year ahead following Brexit. With the sole aim to minimise the possible impact of Brexit for its UK retail network, Rotpunkt has announced that over 200 of the finest Kbb retailers have been exclusively invited to its headquarters in Germany throughout the fourth quarter of 2019. The move is so it can demonstrate its latest developments that are set to provide stability for its dealers and significant opportunities for new growth in 2020. Matt Phillips, head of UK operations, Rotpunkt, said: “This unbroken retail investment comes at a time of great importance. The UK is scheduled to leave the EU. However, recent political actions have led to the UK government deciding whether to delay Brexit, hold another referendum and, even, abandon Article 50 altogether. “Regardless of the outcome, Rotpunkt anticipates huge market change and has put dependable measures in place to limit [if not avoid], any detrimental impact to both brand and business. By already planning for Q4:19 and Q1:20 with a host of systematic dealer trips, Rotpunkt validates its intent for continued growth and preservation of the UK’s retail elite. “Rotpunkt recognise there is a lack of clarity on future ‘trade’, which is why we have taken such a structured approach to our business development this year. We want to remove any ambiguity for our retailers so that they can concentrate on longterm profitability over momentary growth. “There is a conclusive need to prepare for the unknown and, in terms of retail, be able to monopolise the market and influence trends when the competition is being over cautious.”

No rescue for German furniture business German furniture manufacturer Wellemöbel has failed in its attempts to save the business. According to reports, bankruptcy trustee Frank Kebekus has informed remaining employees that proceedings to rescue the business has collapsed, which is set to impact approximately 220 jobs. IKEA develops textile technology Swedish furniture business IKEA has announced the launch of its new air-purifying curtain. IKEA has developed a mineral-based surface treatment that enables the new GUNRID curtain to break down air pollutants when it gets in contact with light. The concept is aimed at reducing indoor air pollution and forms part of IKEA’s wider commitments to contributing to a world of clean air. Commenting on the innovation, Lena Pripp-Kovac, head of sustainability at Inter IKEA Group, said: “Besides enabling people to breathe better air at home, we hope that GUNRID will increase people’s awareness of indoor air pollution, inspiring behavioural changes that contribute to a world of clean air. “GUNRID is the first product to use the technology, but the development will give us opportunities for future applications on other textiles.” The curtain uses a unique technology, which has been developed by IKEA over the last few years together with universities in Europe and Asia as well as IKEA suppliers and innovators. The way it works is similar to photosynthesis found in nature. The process is activated by both outdoor and indoor light. Mauricio Affonso, product developer at IKEA Range & Supply, added: “For me, it’s important to work on products that solve actual problems and are relevant to people. Textiles are used across homes and by enabling a curtain to purify the air, we are creating an affordable and space-saving air purifying solution that also makes the home more beautiful.” The GUNRID air-purifying curtain will be available in IKEA stores next year.

Huge fire destroys furniture facility A huge fire has completely destroyed an outdoor furniture factory and warehouse in Birmingham. West Midlands Fire Service attended the scene on Hay Hall Road in Tyseley around 5am on 18th March. It is understood to be the premises of furniture business Dreams Living Ltd. Around 75 firefighters were at the scene, along with 15 fire engines, three hydraulic platforms and a water pumping unit. Station commander Marc Hudson said: “This is a significant fire, the smoke from which could be seen for several miles. Our priorities were to extinguish the fire as quickly and safely as possible, and to prevent the fire spreading to nearby buildings.” Fire crews spent the majority of the day at the scene along with West Midlands Police, West Midlands Ambulance, and representatives from gas and electric services, Birmingham City Council and Environment Agency. Outdoor furniture business Dreams Living, which imports ratten furniture from China, operates from a number of brands based at the location, including Furniture Maxi, Yakoe and Dreams Outdoors. Its other three brands include Roomee, Harmonn and furniture logistics specialist Roadeeze. Commenting through one of its social media accounts, Furniture Maxi issued a statement to its customers: “We would like to announce all deliveries will be delayed by approximately one week due to an incident. We apologise for any inconvenience.” West Midlands Fire Service, alongside West Midlands Police, confirmed an investigation into the cause is under way.

Consumers replace beds earlier The latest consumer research by the National Bed Federation (NBF) has revealed that consumers are replacing their mattresses earlier. The consumer research, which is undertaken twice a year, found that three quarters of people (75%) replace their bed at least every 10 years, with the mean replacement being every 6.9 years. This is down from a mean of 7.2 years in 2018, 7.4 years in 2017 and 7.9 years in 2016. Simon Williams, marketing manager of the NBF, said: “It would seem that a growing number of consumers are replacing their mattresses every seven years. This is a 10-year drop from 1995 when consumers bought a new mattress on average every 17 years.

Due to contract and legal reasons, the buyer — who is said to have ‘existing retail operations in the South of England’ — cannot be revealed until completion, which is expected by the end of April.

“The new figures represent a significant change in attitude among consumers who, little more than 20 years ago, expected mattresses to almost be a once or twice in a lifetime purchase.”

However, no sale has been agreed for the Ashbourne store with closing down proceedings now under way.

The consumer research also found that people are paying more for new beds, with 52% spending more than £400 in 2019, compared to 49% in 2018, 48% in 2017 and 49% in 2016.

Cabinet Maker details what to expect at this month’s HKTDC Hong Kong International Home Textiles and Furnishings Fair. The HKTDC Hong Kong International Home Textiles and Furnishings Fair is returning from 20th to 23rd April at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Entering its tenth edition, the fair is an ideal sourcing platform and an information exchange hub for fine home textiles, and features more than 300 exhibitors. The fair will be held concurrently with the HKTDC Hong Kong Houseware Fair, which is the largest event of its kind in Asia. The twin fairs together will form a one-stop sourcing platform to meet buyers’ needs for all kinds of household items and home textiles. Last year, close to 49,000 buyers from 112 countries and regions visited the two fairs, and among them more than 19,000 buyers came for the Home Textiles Fair. Leading Design Trends at the Hall of Glamour This year, more than 300 global exhibitors are expected to come and present a vibrant 12th April 2019 | 12

selection of textile products. Exhibitors are categorised under seven theme zones to ensure an easy-to-navigate setting and superior sourcing experience. Hall of Glamour, the premium zone of the fair, features high-end, design-led textiles and furnishings. Leading companies, including Ava International, Craftex India, I&S Co., Ltd, J-Tex (HK) Co., Ltd and Kerala Balers Private Ltd, will be returning to the fair. Alongside first-time participating brand Casablanca in the Baby and Bedroom Textiles zone, these exhibitors will showcase their quality textiles covering bedding, curtains, carpets and towels. Environmental awareness is on the rise and so is the demand for green products. Consumers, particularly in mature markets like Japan, the US and West Europe, are enthusiastic about eco-friendly properties of natural fibres. To cater to the surging demand, the fair highlights environmentally

friendly and sustainable products by labelling exhibitors with green products or hotel supplies for effective sourcing. Other zones include Bathroom and Kitchen Textiles, Carpet and Floorcoverings, Window Fashion and Accessories, Upholstery and Furnishing Products, Design Solutions and Trade Services. Top Textiles A spectrum of quality textile products from eminent brands will be showcased. Korean exhibitor I&S Co., Ltd is returning to showcase a wealth of high-quality rugs and mats, one of which is the Dwinguler Yoga Mat. The Mat adopts a three-layer structure, with the top and bottom foam to provide cushion and support and a fabric layer to prevent bending. Also, there is a non-slip embossing surface to prevent the mat from moving around while exercising, making it suitable for intensive training such as yoga, pilates and gym.

James Singh, from Metro Wardrobes, shares an insight into his business with Cabinet Maker. A London property architect recently made headlines when it was revealed that he had renovated a former broom cupboard in Kensington to create a £225,000 flat, measuring just 125 square feet. It’s no secret that London dwellers are often short-changed when it comes to living space, as is the entire country. According to recent studies, data revealed that homes in Ireland, 12th April 2019 | 14

With more than 60 years of industry experience in textiles and fabrics, Ter Molst continues to design, produce and supply the upholstery and curtain sectors using its famous flax production method and traditions that date back to the Middle Ages. In fact, the entire production process at Ter Molst happens in-house through its own design department, which delivers three new collections every year; its weaving mill, which incorporates yarns from its yarn extrusion; and its fabrics, which are perfected in its own finishing department. It is all signed off with rigorous testing in both its own and external lab facilities to make sure all fabrics meet and exceed today’s standards. 12th April 2019 | 16

Cabinet Maker caught up with Rembert Ketelers, sales director at Ter Molst, during the recent London Fabric Show, where the company had a positive experience. “It was great to be back in the UK at the London Fabric Show. In past years, we’ve experienced this fair to be a great opportunity to meet many key UK customers in a short time. In just two days, we find out what our assets are, but also what’s missing and what can be improved. This year was another successful display. We welcomed more than 40 customers at our booth and were happy with how the show was for us,” Rembert said.

Belgian textile business Ter Molst speaks to Cabinet Maker on its recent investments, appearance in London and future plans for the year ahead.

Ter Molst made the most of the show, displaying its current collections from its two major brands, Linen Life and Vivalife, and reaffirmed its stance on its belief within its brands. “We really believe in our current collections. All the collections keep on growing and our design teams create several sub-collections a year to make sure to maintain a distinguishable Ter Molst look in every new fabric design,” Rembert said. “We have recently invested in 20 new revolutionary weaving looms for the entire group and this is actually part of our durable story we have created with Vivalife. The yarns used to make these performance

Linen Life fabrics are made from upcycled material in our own extrusion plant, and need no water and chemicals for dyeing. As we can now weave 250,000 extra metres of these fabrics every week worldwide, we keep increasing our amount of ecological and performance fabrics.” Ter Molst isn’t finished there with its investments, as a new spinning mill will be on line in November of this year, with the business investing a total of €5m in all of its latest innovations. Furthermore, the company has also earmarked plans to launch a new online presence, as Rembert reveals: “Our new website is coming soon and gives an up-to-date and thorough overview of our products by means of blogposts, collection announcements and inspirational photography. Next to that, we also want to show a clear link with Love Home Fabrics, the umbrella brand Ter Molst is part of. The brand joins nine interior fabric companies worldwide and gives a one-stop shop opportunity for people looking to dress an entire home with interior fabrics of excellent quality.” It is clear to see that there has been a lot going on behind the scenes at Ter Molst. It is even more pleasing to see a company investing for the future where current trading conditions could force many businesses to

stall on signing off investments. By its own admission, trading has been ‘challenging’ for Ter Molst, but the company has been savvy with its strategy and found ‘many new opportunities to grow and expand’ both its production units within its Belgian and USA divisions, as well as selling from their hubs in China and India. And having been established since 1953, the business clearly has the ability to navigate through turbulent and uncertain times, as well as adapt to an ever-changing marketplace. Rembert said: “In the past years, people have started to realise the impact of the climate change. The environment is a big issue in several industries, and the textile industry is definitely one of them. Eco-friendly products are highly requested these days, and we consider it our duty to be as ecological as possible, both in production and in the products we deliver. “Linked to this, we’re launching Act for Home Textiles at Interzum Cologne in May with the Love Home Fabrics group. With this project, we bring together all durable products/collections within the group for our customers, and we focus on the steps we’ve been taking to make our production processes more sustainable.”

If there’s one mindset everyone at Ter Molst shares, it’s definitely that of hard work,” Rembert said, concluding: “We offer high flexibility in both production and design, which requires a determined attitude. We’re happy to see that this passion for textiles is part of our company and our employees’ DNA. Of course, continual investment in new technologies remains an important factor. “Thanks to this flexibility, we’re able to quickly respond to today’s trends, such as colour, design, structures, yarn use and combinations. HAPPY The team behind Wren Kitchens give Cabinet Maker an exclusive insight into their business as it reaches its 10-year milestone. When is the official anniversary date? Wren Kitchens was launched in April 2009 in Howden, Yorkshire, with one kitchen assembly line, building 30 cabinets a day, and the first showroom opened in November that year. Ten years later, we have three state-of-the art production facilities, at Howden as well as Scunthorpe and Bartonupon-Humber in Lincolnshire, where we have our headquarters, delivering around 2,000 kitchens a week and a network of 78 showrooms. In our first year our turnover was £77,000; in 2018 it was more than £490m. This has not been an overnight success story though — Wren Kitchens is a family business and the company’s heritage dates back more than half a century to a decorating supplies business in Hull, which later morphed into Hygena Kitchens. Celebration plans? We have some very exciting plans, which we will be sharing in full shortly. We plan to bring the unique Wren experience to more people around the country who have not yet discovered us, and we will be announcing 12th April 2019 | 18

Wren has plans to expand their showroom network across the UK

new charity partnerships in due course. Have there been any particular highlights over the past 10 years? There have been too many to mention, but two highlights in the company’s history were purchasing our second production facility, in Scunthorpe, in 2011, and then, in 2013, acquiring The Nest in Barton-upon-Humber, a 750,000sq ft site for our head office, and a third production and furniture storage facility. We are proud of the recognition we have earned over the last 10 years and in 2017 we were named the UK’s fastest-growing bricks and mortar retailer by The Telegraph, which reflected the journey we have made from start-up to market leader. Have there been any challenges? Growing a business from a standing start presents plenty of challenges. We launched in a very difficult economic climate in the wake of the 2008 crash so that was a challenge in itself, but scaling up also presents its own challenges, especially ensuring that customer service standards are not compromised. Another challenge has been establishing brand recognition in a market dominated by well-established names, but we now have the second highest level of unprompted brand awareness, according to YouGov, so we are moving in the right direction. The key to success? We have a unique proposition. We buy from source; make all our kitchens in more than two million square feet of factory space in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire; and deliver throughout the UK, using our own delivery fleet. By cutting out the middle man we can offer unbeatable prices to our customers. We make all our kitchens to order, in multiple depths and every width in 50mm increments, offering a selection

“We are proud of the recognition we have earned over the last 10 years.” of more than 2,000 colours and several million product combinations. We provide customers with a bespoke, fully-assembled kitchen at a price that even those selling a basic flat pack kitchen cannot match. Finally, we are passionate about what we do and we know more about kitchens than anyone in the industry — that’s why we have become the UK’s number one kitchen retailer. Our employees have helped us grow too. Many of our long-serving team are now senior managers and have grown with the business. We are proud that Wren is a family and many of our 4,300 staff have been with us through these exciting times. How has 2019 been so far? We were delighted to be named Retail Employer of the Year, which is testament to the amazing team we have here. They are passionate, hard-working and dedicated to doing the best for our customers. Our growth remains consistent with our forecasts and, based on our post year-end sales performance, we have not seen any loss of consumer confidence resulting from Brexit. The possible fall-out from Brexit remains a risk, but we are better insulated than most from the risks because almost all our products are manufactured in our own UK

factories from raw materials sourced in the UK, and we do not currently export so would not be affected by the imposition of tariffs. What is your view of the current marketplace? We believe there are significant opportunities for growth in the kitchen market, both in the UK and beyond. We believe the demand for more bespoke and personalised kitchens will only increase in the future; our Spectrum range allows customers to produce a kitchen that matches a colour sample they bring into a showroom and this has proved extremely popular. Whilst some analysts have suggested the kitchen furniture market has peaked, this has not been our experience — we believe that if we continue to offer outstanding value and a first-class customer service, we will continue to grow our market share and that there will always be a demand for high-quality, bespoke kitchens. What’s next for Wren? We are planning to continue expanding our showroom network as there are many towns and cities where we do not have a presence, and we currently have only around one third of the number of showrooms of our rivals. We opened our 78th showroom in March, in Leicester, and we are looking at a further 16 potential openings during the year. We will continue to invest in the business as this has always been key to our growth — last year we invested £28.7m in fixed assets. Technology plays a key role in the development of the business and we have invested heavily in bespoke IT systems; our kitchen planning software is invaluable to our designers as it prevents them from making mistakes that are common in the industry.

LAST WORD TOBIAS BUXHOIDT, FOUNDER AND CEO OF PARCELLAB What does a good returns policy look like?

“it’s expensive to pay for shoppers to send Back Goods – it costs retailers some £60Billion a year in total in the uk alone.“

No matter how good your products are, some customers are going to want or need to return them. It vital to have a returns policy that appeals to your customers. So what does that mean? The adage ‘Keep It Simple Stupid’ certainly applies to your returns policy. The simplest tend to be the most effective as they are easy for customers to understand, while clarity engenders trust because shoppers won’t fear there are any hidden nasty surprises. Plus, if there’s anything you need customers to do as part of the returns process, such as print a label, make sure this is all clearly set out. 2. Generosity

5. Trackability

There’s little point creating a clear and simple returns policy if all it says is: “We don’t exchange purchased goods once they have been delivered.” For it to work in your favour, your policy should make customers feel like you’re being generous to them — in fact, as generous as possible. Yes, it’s expensive to pay for shoppers to send back goods — it costs retailers some £60billion a year in total in the UK alone. But these days customers expect returning goods they’ve bought online to be free, so that’s what needs to go in your policy. And the longer you can give shoppers to return their products free of charge the better. Remember that this is a key factor they’ll use to measure you against your rivals, so where possible make sure your policy is more generous than theirs.

Keep customers up to date on the status of their return and their refund. They’ll appreciate the care and attention and pay you back with their loyalty. This is also a great way to get value from your returns process, because you are engaging with your customers with every update. This provides an opportunity to increase brand awareness. It also gives you the chance to encourage sales by including details of offers and vouchers, and inform them of new, relevant products.

1. Clarity and simplicity

Anticipating that your customers might want to return a product makes the whole process easier for them. So consider adding a return slip with each shipment and use packaging that can also be used to return goods. If you need to charge customer to return goods, offset this with a discount voucher off their

4. Convenience If your customers need to find their own packaging, write on the address, then take the parcel to their nearest Post Office, the whole returns process becomes timeconsuming and will feel like a chore. You’ll make your customers happier if you can speed things up. Pre-addressed reusable packaging can really help here. Plus, you can use the collection service offered at many local newsagents or, even better, arrange for the returns to be collected by your logistics company.

next purchase. It all helps. This also saves your customer service team time and effort, and they are less likely to be contacted about how customers should return their items.
