When you hear or read the word embrace, what is your natural go to? Is it to show a sign of affection to another? Perhaps it triggers a need to listen to the 90s rock band? Or maybe you define the word as to willingly and enthusiastically accept something — in most cases, change. The change I’m alluding to is digital and all the opportunities new technology can bring. There has been plenty of discussion on how businesses need to adapt their offerings to fulfil a tech-savvy consumer — and it affects every industry, not just ours. There are businesses already well ahead of the curve which have implemented digital strategies that are proving to be successful. Others are beginning to see the benefits and are ultimately rolling out their own concepts. The key thing is that technology is all evolving, especially in the furniture industry. The point is to reaffirm that change is good as long as you adapt and transition in the right way. What is the right way? One that meets your consumers needs and ultimately keeps them happy, which should keep the tills ringing.

testing, a look ahead at lighting industry show LuxLive and an insight into a new bespoke furniture and accessories event service. As well as the supplement, the issue also features a second look at what to expect at the Manchester Furniture Show but from a different angle, with a focus on furniture industry services. This is followed by MADE. com’s recent investment of its new innovation lab and the latest news from Parlane. Rounding off the issue is David Jinks, from ParcelHero, who discusses how CVAs are actually speeding up the demise of the High Street as we know it. Offering food for thought, the plight that the High Street finds itself in requires plenty of change to make sure it lives on. One of these changes should be digital and finding a way to marry both online and instore. For those that haven’t, it is time to embrace the change. Dan Squires Editor

The signs of marrying new technologies with the highest-quality service is the key partnership for future success. One of our changes at Cabinet Maker you will have noticed so far this year is the introduction of our monthly supplements dedicated to specific industry areas. New owner at department store

WELSH FITTED FURNITURE FIRM GROWS TOP LINE

The new owner of heritage department store retailer Bennetts, which was partly saved from administration, has been revealed.

Wales-based fitted kitchens and bedrooms furniture manufacturer Sigma 3 has reported a sixth year of consecutive turnover growth as sales edged closer towards £30m.

Paul Mallatratt and Louise Freestone, both of Bridgewood Financial Solutions, were appointed joint administrators of Bennetts (Irongate) Limited, which trades as the Bennetts Department Store in Derby and Ashbourne, in February.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 30th September, 2018, total sales rose 5.4% to £25.5m from £24.2m in 2017.

Previously, administrators confirmed that the Derby store was sold to an unnamed party, which — for a legal reason due to the buyer having ‘exisiting retail operations in the South of England’ — couldn’t be revealed until completion.

Gross profit also increased by 4.8% to £10.9m from £10.4m, while pre-tax profit resulted at £1.9m, down by 24% compared to its profit of £2.5m recorded last year. The decline ended a fourth straight year of profit growth.

It has now been revealed that London Sole Limited, part of a group of companies owned by Charles James Associates, acquired the store, with the deal remaining undisclosed. Not part of the transaction was the Ashbourne store, which has ceased trading and closed after a sale never materialised.

Stated within its report, the company said it had maintained its gross margin of 43%, despite a ‘competitive marketplace’ and ‘material price increases’.

In a statement, administrators said David Howick, director of London Sole, was keen to revive and develop the store, while keeping the Bennetts brand in place. Bennetts, which has been established since 1734, entered difficulty after suffering from a ‘very challenging’ period on the High Street.

Established in 1975, the company operates out of manufacturing facility in Pontyclun, as well as eight kitchen and bedroom showrooms in Abergavenny, Cardiff East, Cardiff West, Esher, Newport, Swansea, Warton Preston and Worthing.

FURNITURE FIRE REGS UPDATE ‘IMMINENT’ The furniture industry can expect an update to the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 ‘imminently’, according to Ms Kelly Tolhurst MP, Parliamentary UnderSecretary for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Ms Tolhurst made the statement at the annual Confederation Lunch, organised by the British Furniture Confederation (BFC) and The Furniture Makers’ Company, although to date no announcement has yet been made. Around 70 senior level employees from companies representing the domestic and contract furniture trade attended the event, which provides industry the opportunity to hear first-hand from government and communicate issues. The BFC is a strong supporter of fire safety in the form of the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, as amended, but has long been concerned that the regulations have not been updated in the 30 years since they were first introduced. Since 1988, the industry has seen huge changes, not only in materials and processes, but also to the risks within the home environment. The industry has been seeking a full revision of the regulations since 2008 and has fully cooperated with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in its efforts to reform the legislation.

New chairman of Lars Larsen Group After more than 40 years managing JYSK and Lars Larsen Group, Lars Larsen has decided to step back. He has been succeeded by Jacob Brunsborg (left). “I am very happy and proud that Jacob has agreed to take on the position as chairman, which will ensure that JYSK and Lars Larsen Group will continue as a family-owned company based on strong values,” said Lars. Lars acknowledged that the change of chairman was happening earlier than planned because of illness. Lars was diagnosed with liver cancer, which has spread. “Unfortunately it is a very serious diagnosis, and, therefore, I have decided to spend my time and efforts on my family. However, it means a lot to me that the future leadership of the company is in place,” said Lars.

Speaking to delegates at the Confederation Lunch, Ms Tolhurst said: “I recognise the need to update the regulations to respond to developments in furniture design, innovation and manufacturing process, and the environmental and health concerns that have widely been spoken of. My priority is to maintain product fire safety protections. Consumers need to have confidence that products in their homes are produced to rigorous safety requirements. “Updating those regulations is complex and it has required careful consideration of evidence and close engagement with diverse stakeholders to ensure we find the right way forward. I am pleased to be able to tell you that I will be publishing the Government’s response to the 2016 consultation, setting out the way forward, imminently.” The chairman of the BFC, Jonathan Hindle, commented: “For the past decade, the industry has been seeking a revision of the regulations so they are fit for modern purpose and has been cooperating fully with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The BFC has worked tirelessly on this issue and we welcome the news of an imminent response. “The BFC is and always has been committed to maintaining high levels of fire safety in the home, and has constantly encouraged meaningful consultation on current regulations. This has been to ensure that environmental concerns are met, as well as updating the regulations to reflect modern materials and manufacturing techniques.”

“Right now my focus is on supporting my closest family during this difficult time and, therefore, I will not comment on the future plans for the company right now.”

During her speech, Ms Tolhurst also spoke of new funding measures the Government had implemented to support companies, innovators and entrepreneurs, including investing up to £120m in the Made Smarter Digital Manufacturing Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution, and providing £20m to the Made Smarter North West Pilot, which will support up to 3,000 SME manufacturers.

NEW MACHINERY BOUGHT

Furniture retailer Harveys has announced a brand-new addition to the BOLD by Louise range in collaboration with Louise Redknapp, with the introduction of the IDOL collection.

Office furniture specialist Dams has acquired new machinery. As part of its ongoing investment drive within its UK manufacturing –— and following its recent opening of a new upholstery factory — Dams has recently introduced a new Combination Edge Bander machine in its wood factory.

Following on from its initial launch last year, the new IDOL collection, which is in all Harveys stores, features chaise, threeseater, two-seater and loveseat sofas, alongside new armchairs and footstools.

Used for edging multiple sides of wooden panels simultaneously, the new machinery adds to its other investment of a brand new Homag wood saw, which is also for its wood factory, and its new BAZ shaping and cutting machine.

With five feet options, the collection can be personalised by combining velvet-look fabrics or soft neutral textures with gold, chrome, or wood foot selections.

Dams said: “We continue to invest in the best equipment available to support our UK manufacturing operations. As a UK manufacturer we can also ensure that we buy our wood from FSC certified sources. We have our products FIRA tested and we have full control over our product quality.”

Harveys and Louise have taken this extensive palette offering even further by introducing a new Oxblood colour way to the range, which is in line with her trend predictions for deep rouge and bronze palettes featuring in homes this year.

w www.dams.com

Louise said: “I absolutely love every piece of the new IDOL collection and I am so proud of how far the entire range has come in its first six months. I have the Large IDOL Sofa in my own living room, so I can envisage how amazing this collection will look in homes across the UK. I’m really excited to bring on board the new Oxblood colour, I absolutely adored the material and tone the moment I laid eyes on it. “I can’t wait to continue growing and building on the BOLD by Louise product offering and to share it with you all. 2019 is a big year for new trends with people becoming more designconscious and brave with their styles. I want my range to help give people the confidence to upgrade their home interiors.”

Carpet retailer lays down ‘encouraging’ growth Carpetright has reported an ‘encouraging return’ to like-to-like growth as losses also narrowed. According to its full year results for the 52 weeks ended 27th April, total group sales were down 13.4% to £386.4m from £446.3m in 2018. Group pre-tax losses reduced from £69.8m to £24.8m as its CVA programme continued to turnaround the business. Within the UK, first half like-for-like sales declined 12.7%, as the group implemented the CVA and associated restructuring of its store portfolio, which saw 80 stores close as part of the CVA and 23 stores retained on a nil rent basis. Second-half performance improved significantly with like-for-like sales decline reduced to 5.4%, and Q4 reduced further to 2.3%. Full-year UK revenue declined by 17% to £301m and by 9.1% on a like-for-like basis. Underlying EBITDA loss of £0.4m, compared to 2018’s profit of £3.4m, was in line with expectations. Outside the UK, sales rose 1.9% to £85.4m with like-for-like growth up 3.4%, whilst EBITDA was slightly down to £3.3m from £3.7m, reflecting a ‘change in sales mix’. Within products, total bed sales in the UK fell 27.5% to £20.8m from £28.7m, with like-for-like sales down by 18.4%.

RETAIL

Carpetright said that its attempt to improve both the breadth and presentation of the range during the year was not successful and it sought to retrench in the period, focusing on service and price point against competitors. The renewed focus saw improved traction through the year, particularly in the fourth quarter, which has led to confidence in driving the strategy back to growth in the year ahead. Within its core product area, carpet sales were down 16% to £280.2m from £333.8m, with like-for-like sales down by 8.4%.

Retailer to extend distribution hub Hardwood furniture retailer Oak Furnitureland has confirmed plans to extend its 300,000sqft distribution centre in Swindon. Located at South Marston’s Industrial Park, site owner LondonMetric have appointed Glencar Construction Ltd, alongside Knight Webb, RPS, Hydrock and Mick George Ltd to deliver the extension, which is expected to be completed by November. The project will involve the creation of a single-storey extension to increase the size of the existing building by 54,599sqft. External site works include hard-standings and lorry parking, together with associated landscaping and drainage. The facility will remain in use while the works are completed, requiring the careful coordination of construction works and deliveries in order to minimise disruption. The scheme will contribute towards a proportion of the 400,000 annual orders received online or through one of the companies 95 stores.

w www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk 5th July 2019 | 10

Carpetright said it was disappointed but stated that this was in line with the wider market as consistent challenges continued to hamper the ‘big-ticket’ home improvement sector. The group made significant progress in reducing its cost base and is on track to deliver the annualised savings of £19m outlined at the time of the equity raise in June 2018. Carpetright said that it achieved a saving of £13.6m in the period and the remaining initiatives to deliver the full savings target were well under way. Overall, expenses fell by £35.7m to £207.5m, a decrease of 14.7%. The group also sold three UK properties shortly after the year end, in Salford, Devizes and Newtownards, raising £2.6m in cash proceeds. Carpetright intends to grow its digital strategy and has appointed Jeremy Maxwell as new group commercial director. He has already led a comprehensive review of its digital operations. Carpetright also indicated that with current trading, UK like-forlike sales in the first eight weeks of the new financial year were ahead by 8.5% against its 14.6% decline. Like-for-likes sales in Rest of Europe were also ahead by 4.3%.

LIGHTING BUSINESS WINS QUALITY ASSURANCE AWARD Lighting business Ansell Lighting has won the LIA Quality Assurance award. The LIA said: “Ansell are recognised as a LIAQA Assured Company for lamps, domestic luminaires, commercial luminaires, emergency lighting and outsource supply, and were presented with the award due to their heavy investment in quality assurance and how they have embraced the LIAQA scheme both in the UK and the Far East.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR IS… The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) has announced the winner of its Outstanding Student of 2018 award. The Lighting Industry Academy’s LIA Certificate is recognised throughout the industry as the main lighting course to enhance lighting knowledge. The course requires students to complete three test papers and a comprehensive lighting project that demanded creative thinking and utilised all the lighting knowledge delivered during the course. The assigned project brief was to provide an upgrade for an existing woodworking company. The accolade went to Antonio Formisano (pictured centre) from Ansell Lighting, who was presented with the crystal LIA Certificate Award Bowl, along with a certificate and cheque for £500. Antonio’s passion for light dates back to his childhood when he always needed a light on because “the night is dark and full of terror”. He graduated magna-cum-laude in building engineering in Naples, Italy, where he focused his studies on the effect of natural light in both modern and archaeological buildings.

“Focus has been placed on implementing improved quality processes, alongside staff training and investing heavily in thirdparty product testing. They have produced a robust system for product approval, technical file generation and maintenance, and quality assurance checks, all supported by a dedicated QA team.” The LIAQA Award was introduced by the LIA to acknowledge the commitment to quality displayed by the participants of this unique quality scheme. The LIA offers members this industry specific Quality Assurance solution, which addresses legislative and regulatory requirements specific to the lighting industry and is designed to operate as a robust standalone quality solution, or as a scheme to work in conjunction with ISO9001. Using a modular approach and focusing on product type specific requirements, LIAQA identifies the criteria for product acceptance, manufacturing process requirements, and the evidence that supports product conformity. The LIAQA team analysed and deliberated over more than 130 LIAQA participants, using a variety of criteria, which culminated in three companies being nominated for the 2019 Award.

In 2018 he joined Ansell Lighting as a lighting designer. The judges commented that Antonio produced an exceptional project and gave a very thorough presentation.

Ansell Lighting were announced as the Winners at the LIA Annual Lunch, held at Drapers Hall. The other nominees were NET LED Lighting and Tala.

Despite the lull in top-line growth, pre-tax profit resulted at £8.8m, up by 11.4% from £7.9m. Bowie Mirror with Tate Console Table

The secret of designing a stylish interior is combining the key items of furniture with smaller pieces and accessories, including soft furnishings and wall decor, along with carefully considered lighting. All contribute to the overall look of the room. Selecting the right accessories helps achieve the required feel, whilst also adding personality and interest. Lighting is important to give the desired atmosphere — a carefully chosen and placed lamp can add character and ambience. Gallery’s extensive catalogue provides a wide and varied range of accessories and lighting, to suit different looks and styles of interior. Its accessories range from faux plants to photoframes and from vases to candle holders. On the wall décor side there is a

wonderful selection of mirrors, along with wall art and clocks. Soft furnishings include cushions, throws, bedding, doorstops and rugs. Its lighting catalogue features table and floor lamps, ceiling lights, pendants and wall lights. But to keep its collections fresh and exciting, the team at Gallery is continually developing products. Several new soft furnishing items have just been introduced, including 100% cotton rugs, throws and cushions, which offer excellent value for money. There are also heavily-embellished cushions, featuring tropical leaves, pineapples and flamingos, along with a decorative green Indian throw. Their AW19 Collection will include even more new soft furnishings, along with mirrors, wall art and lighting, as well as furniture and upholstery. It will be Gallery’s biggest ever

Andrew Munns, from testing specialist SATRA, explains the procedure behind the complex testing process of mirrors.

MIRROR

TESTING

Mirrors may represent a safety hazard. This means that appropriate safety tests depend on the nature of the mirror. The safety tests associated with domestic mirrors depend on the type of application. For example, it 5th July 2019 | 24

might be a wall-hanging mirror, or a mirror component that is installed within a piece of furniture (such as built into a wardrobe door), or a free-standing mirror to sit on the floor.

For a wall-hanging mirror there are at least two safety aspects that need to be considered. The glass in a large wall-hanging mirror could cause injury if the method used to attach it to the wall fails and the mirror falls

down. It is recommended that a wall-hanging mirror is subjected to a SATRA ‘wall-hanging test’. This involves attaching the mirror to a wall following the supplier’s instructions, using any fixings provided, and then exerting an additional downward force to the complete mirror for 48 hours to see if the fixing method fails. In addition, if the mirror in use is likely to be subjected to high temperatures or high humidity conditions, distortion in the frame and mount might lead to stress that causes the glass component to fracture — perhaps in a dangerous manner. Therefore, if, for instance, the wall-hanging mirror is for use in a bathroom, a suitable test is to place it in a high humidity test chamber, maintained at 23°C and 85 per cent relative humidity (rh) for 28 days. An inspection is then carried out to look for any signs of distortion, bowing or swelling, and any signs of backing adhesion failure. Loss of adhesive bond quality or loss of security would mean a failure unless there is more than one system holding the glass in position. If the wall-hanging mirror is for use above a fireplace (for example in a living room), an elevated temperature test would be appropriate. It is recommended that the mirror should be placed on in a dry heat oven for eight days — four days at a temperature of 40°C followed by a further four days at a temperature of 50°C. After exposure, the mirror is again inspected as described above.

aQO

described above would still be appropriate, especially if the mirror is heavy. Standards for mirrors

“FOR ANY MIRROR, AN ADHESION-TO-BACKING

INTEGRITY TEST IS A SENSIBLE WAY

OF CHECKING THAT ANY FAILURE WOULD BE A ‘SAFE’ FAILURE.”

If the mirror is for use in a cool hall, then the effect of elevated temperature is not so important — but the wall-hanging test

There are few relevant standards for mirrors. Although withdrawn, BS 7449:1991 – ‘Specification for inclusion of glass in the construction of furniture, other than tables or trolleys, including cabinets, shelving systems and wall hung or free-standing mirrors’, provides recommendations for the design and construction of mirrors, but highlights no specific tests for them, except for an impact test in appendix A. BS 7449 is useful as it gives guidance on informative markings to be used on mirrors. European standard EN 14749:2016 – ‘Furniture. Domestic and kitchen storage units and kitchen-worktops. Safety requirements and test methods’ includes an impact test that is relevant to mirrors. For a mirror component that is installed (for instance, in a wardrobe door), this impact test in EN 14749 applies, but only if the mirror has no backing – that is, if it is not supported by a carrier board such as medium-density fibreboard (MDF). For a free-standing (floor-standing) mirror, it is appropriate to use the stability test in BS 4875-8:1998 – ‘Furniture. Strength and stability of furniture. Methods for determination of stability of non-domestic storage furniture’ (a severe stability test), or EN 14749 clauses 5.4 and 5.5. If the mirror is more than 1m high, a stability test under 5.4 would apply. The term ‘safety glass mirror’ is sometimes used. A safety glass mirror is made by adhering a special protective film to the back surface of a silver glass mirror. This prevents injuries in case the mirror is broken. For any mirror, an adhesion-to-backing integrity test is a sensible way of checking that any failure would be a ‘safe’ failure. This integrity test is similar to the ‘fragmentation test’ utilised to check transparent glass. A hammer and metal punch are used to check that when broken, the glass of the mirror remains safely attached to the backing material, which may be a ‘safety film backing’. As far as product marking is concerned, a sensible precaution would be to put appropriate warning labels on a mirror, such as ‘do not put hot objects against this mirror’, or ‘follow the supplied instructions when mounting the mirror on a wall’. Packages combining complementary items are also available: glitzy make-up stations for dressing rooms, a rustic, handmade bar set-up and a variety of seating options such as German beer tables and benches or rustic trestle tables with tolix style chairs. There are posts, ropes and picket fencing to help you manage crowds; mirrors, fridges, fluffy throws and film set lights to create dreamy dressing rooms; huge parasols, feather flags, bean bag cushions and fire pits for the most fabulous of festivals; and bespoke decorations to add those personal touches, such as flower pots, fairy light-filled kilner jars, scatter cushions, bell jars and arches of all shapes and sizes. Chris said the idea had been at the back of his mind for a long time and he is delighted it has now come into fruition. “Event Furniture by Tarren has been a long time in the making. Between us, my team and I have been producing and staging events for almost 25 years and, as such, know how important hassle-free hire is, particularly for tight timescales,” he said. “We have carefully selected and handcrafted an incredible collection of pieces we can now share with those looking to wow with their next event. People are surprised at the sheer variety of pieces we have to offer — things you wouldn’t even imagine could be hired

at short notice, such as antique Chesterfield sofas, Persian rugs, faux foliage and so much more. “If you’ve got the vision, we can provide an on trend backdrop for almost any type of indoor or outdoor event. Event organisers are invited to view the range on our new website, select their favourite pieces to create their event wishlist, then submit the request to our expert team, who will contact them with prices and availability. For something more bespoke, the team is also happy to handcraft new products to order.” With decades of experience staging over 2,500 different events, the team behind Event Furniture by Tarren certainly knows what works for clients and crowds of all types and tastes.

Lab launched back in March

When did the innovation lab officially launch? MADE Labs launched in March 2019 with the aim of working with pioneering small businesses to develop new technologies that help our customers find the right products and then visualise them in their own homes. Unlike many other incubator programmes, the Labs team will work closely with the rest of the business to get these innovations into our core platform as quickly as possible, so that customers can start to benefit from them. How much investment has gone into the launch? We have invested a lot of time and energy into this project as we believe it could provide our customers with some game-changing innovations. The launch of MADE Labs

SCOUT Philippe Chainieux, chief executive at MADE.com, talks about its recent investment that saw the launch of a new innovation lab, current trading and its view on apprenticeships.

follows the success of collaborations with a number of other technology businesses to date, such as Hullabalook, which created MADE’s Sofasizer, a hugely-popular online tool that helps customers find the perfect size of sofa for their space and won customer innovation of the year at the Retail Week tech Awards in 2017.

Why is this an important step for MADE? MADE’s entrepreneurial, agile approach is fundamental to our business strategy; as a digitally-native brand, being at the forefront of technological developments is a key priority and we want to be able to provide technology that is one step ahead of our customers’ expectations. » 5th July 2019 | 31

F E A T U R E |M A D E . C O M Soho showroom has tripled in size How many start-ups are currently on board? The launch of MADE Labs follows the success of collaborations with a number of other technology businesses to date, such as Hullabalook, and we already have our first couple of new Labs projects under way. The first of these is View It Live, an innovative new software that enables online customers to connect to our showroom teams live in order to view their choice of products in HD. They can also get real-time practical or styling advice from our experts on the showroom floor. This functionality is live across our showroom spaces in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Birmingham and Redbrick in West Yorkshire, with plans to extend this further across Europe in 2019. What is the longer term plan? MADE Labs is an important step for us in making great design accessible to the masses. As a digitally native business, it’s crucial that we continue to find the most cutting-edge solutions to our customers’ needs — whether it’s finding the perfect sofa to fit their living room, or giving them access to interior designers at the touch of a button. We are lucky enough to be based in the centre of one of the world’s best tech startup communities, and we hope to be able to continue collaborating with these amazing businesses to get their ideas in front of our customers.

with the unveiling of our expanded flagship showroom in Soho in London, which has tripled in size and now houses a host of new technology, as well as opening a new showroom in Hamburg and launching in Sweden.

How has the year been so far for MADE? We have had a great start to 2019 so far,

While there’s no doubt that the retail sector is facing challenges at the moment, our agile model allows us to adapt quickly to changing

consumer trends, and we are confident that this positions us well for future growth. Are there any other initiatives MADE are working on at the moment you can reveal? Earlier this year, we released results that showed a 37% increase in revenue for 2018 and announced that 2019 will see Europe overtaking the UK as our biggest market,

We have already launched in Sweden and our focus over the next 12 months will be taking great design to new audiences through our continued expansion into Europe.

MADE is consistently on the hunt for the best talent

What are the key reasons behind MADE’s continued success? MADE was founded to provide high-quality design for everyone that doesn’t break the bank. This is exactly what we’re focused on delivering, and we believe it’s the reason people keep coming back to us. We pride ourselves on relentless innovation in order to remain relevant and over the last nine years, we have developed a unique model that combines technology and innovation to make our business more efficient and

cut unnecessary margins — and pass those savings on to customers. This also enables us to adapt to changing trends quickly; new lines can take just four months from design to reach the market. From start-ups to apprenticeships. Does MADE have any schemes for apprenticeships? We currently have a Tech apprenticeship scheme, which we run through a provider called Arch Apprenticeships. We now have x3 apprenticeship positions in the team (all within the Tech operations team), which are recruited via Arch. The apprenticeship lasts for one year, although some do then stay on permanently. Final thought? At MADE, innovation is an integral part of our DNA; it enables us to adapt to changing trends quickly and ensures we remain relevant for our ever-evolving group of customers. As the shift from high street to online accelerates, agility has never been more important to remaining relevant, and we see MADE Labs as a hugely important part of that. We’re looking for the best talent from across the world — not just the UK! We would welcome approaches from any start-ups who have ideas for collaborations — so please get in touch!

Call Organisers of IMM Cologne have issued a call for entry for the 17th Pure Talents Contest.

The Pure Talents Contest is one of the most renowned contests for young designers worldwide. Students and young graduates are invited once again this year to submit their designs for contemporary, sustainable living objects. The best 20 among them will be invited by the organiser to present their prototypes to the trade world at the international interiors trade fair IMM Cologne 2020.

The 17th Pure Talents Contest (PTC) brings together young creative people from across the world and invites them to submit their solo or group works from the most varied furniture categories. The contest is aimed at design students and graduates whose graduation is no more than three years behind them. Last year saw 926 products by 756 designers from 69 nations submitted. In keeping with its high standards for quality and internationality, the jury of the Pure Talents Contests 2020 demonstrates its usual high calibre with the designers Stefan Herkner (Germany) and Philippe Malouin (UK); the art director of Cappellini, Giulio Cappellini

(Italy); the IDEAT editor, Johannes Hünig; the head curator of the Design Museum Helsinki, Suvi Saloniemi; as well as the event manager of IMM Cologne, Rüdiger Sprave. Designer Stefan Herkner, from Offenbach, who is already supporting the Pure Talents Contest for the third time as a member of the jury, said: “The Pure Talents Contest is a very special event at IMM Cologne for the young designers, for us as jurors and for visitors. “The most recent competition showed how high the level of submissions is in the meantime. The product maturity of many designs is often highly advanced. That is remarkable. I am already very much looking forward to the new submissions and am pleased to once again be part of the jury.” The submission phase of the Pure Talents Contest 2020 ends on 12th September, 2019. The jury will then view the submissions and select the 20 best products. These will be exhibited during IMM Cologne, which takes place from 13th to 19th January, 2020, in hall 2.1. The young designers are provided with

Last year’s winner was Ilja HuberIlja Huber for his three-part light fixture Baschnja. For his final project on his master’s degree, Ilja Huber examined the issue of lighting moods in living spaces. His idea was to design a light fixture that enables individually-tailored lighting of space. Second place went to Christian Cowper for his Bench Gang collection. The Bench Gang illustrated the unrefined qualities of fun and play — bringing life to the humble bench! This project, Play, explored the mental benefits of playing — something that can become neglected as we grow older. In third place was Julian Marticke for his A Day At The Zoo inspiration. The built-in magnets allowed the blocks to be combined together to form animals or fantasy creatures to act as a showpiece on the dining table, a distraction in the office or scattered on the playmat. Finally, the Special Mention went to Michael Varga for his The Conscious Unconsciousness concept. The designs do not put materiality, production or ergonomics at the forefront, but rather revolve around dealing with our consumption in a conscious way. LAST WORD DAVID JINKS MILT, PARCELHERO’S HEAD OF CONSUMER RESEARCH Property landlords have to choose between either accepting a huge cut in rental income, or losing the tenant altogether and having large properties standing empty.

CVAs are fatally wounding our High Streets CVAs are simply speeding up the demise of High Street shopping and will impact on pension and investment schemes. CVAs are at best a temporary bandage for store chains and, at worst, will hasten the demise of the High Street and reduce the value of many pensions, many of which are partially-invested in commercial property markets. Retailers, from Debenhams and House of Fraser to Carpetright and Mothercare, have used CVAs to plan the wholesale closure of many stores. Nearly 1,000 stores have closed under CVA agreements in the past two years alone. Just this month Philip Green’s Arcadia Group has also agreed a CVA that includes the closure of 23 UK stores. The escalating closure of major High Street stores will simply drive shoppers away from town centres in even greater numbers. CVAs should be a last resort, not the standard retail business practice they are fast becoming. Yes, they give chains the chance to slash rents and ditch poor performing stores; but closures are becoming unsustainable. Debenhams is axing 22 stores and House of Fraser 31 stores under CVAs, while Carpetright has already used its CVA to ditch around 92 stores, Mothercare 50 and Homebase 92.

This diminishes the market for new retail developments. Many large pension schemes may typically have around 8% of their funds invested in commercial property developments and management; but with returns on those investments falling, pensions are being impacted and some schemes are seeking to reduce their exposure to the sector. And many of us may have our pension pot invested in a specialist property pension fund. As an example, the makeup of one well-known fund includes 9.2% invested in shopping centres and around 9.5% in standard retail stores. And Britain’s High Street banks have around 8% of their loans tied to commercial properties. BHS could be said to have started the current CVA “trend”, forcing its creditors into accepting far lower rents and even rent ‘holidays’ for some stores; we all know where that ended for BHS. Likewise, Jamie’s Italian also negotiated a CVA with its creditors in February, but collapsed entirely a few months later.

CVAs don’t remedy the fundamental faults at the heart of a brand; they are a desperate measure that will simply mean property investors move into alternative markets, and our High Streets collapse under the weight of closures and terminal under-investment.’ Retailers with a portfolio of stores should instead seek to make the most of these great assets, ensuring store events are an “event” and adopting a multi-channel approach to retail; with customers buying online and popping into their local stores to pick up items and return them. The increased footfall encouraged by BOPUS — Buy Online, Pick Up in Store — will result in increased sales for many of our still muchloved town centre stores. For more information about the impact of CVAs on Britain’s department stores, see ParcelHero’s industry study Departing Department Stores: https://www. parcelhero.com/blog/news-updates/ departing-department-stores

TO HAVE YOUR LAST WORD OR OPINION PLEASE CONTACT DAN@CABINET-MAKER.CO.UK

Not only is the trust between landlords and retailers being destroyed; but many of our pensions are invested by their administrators into retail property. Institutional investors, such as pension funds and insurance companies, are large investors — both directly and indirectly — in commercial property markets.
