In another attempt to crack down on rogue traders operating within the beds industry, the National Bed Federation (NBF) has announced the extension of its Code of Practice to cover social and ethical compliance. What does this mean? During its recent Forum and Annual General Meeting — the association’s 107th — the membership voted unanimously to join the Fast Forward Programme, which will involve all members being audited against a rigorous set of statutory compliance criteria. These include all aspects of employment, including eligibility to work, national minimum wage, employment law, health and safety, mistreatment and access to remedy. After listening to increasing concerns and stories of rogue businesses that do not behave in socially or ethical acceptable ways, the NBF has taken a stance to implement this new compliance in a move beyond its typical product Code of Practice. Tony Lisanti, NBF president, said: “We are all aware of the stories and rumours widely circulating about rogue businesses. We wanted to find a way of helping our membership clearly distance themselves from such businesses.”

On to the issue in hand — and also featuring a debut bit of content — is the first Contract Furniture Supplement. Gallery Direct leads the line-up with its solutions for contract beds and upholstery, whilst global office furniture business Humanscale talks about how its business is scaling up. Furthermore, workplace fit-out specialist Dams shares its latest company developments, whilst Mattison Contract Beds unveils two new senior sales appointments and a new collaboration. Elsewhere, we cover what to expect at the upcoming Tendence show, explore the benefits of choosing the right logistics partner and gain an insight into FIRA’s Gold Certification. To top it all off, Cabinet Maker showcases an early preview of the highly-anticipated Bed Show, which this year marks its 10th anniversary. I’m sure all on show will be extremely pleased with the NBF’s latest move, as mentioned above, to rid the industry of those ruinous rogues! Dan Squires Editor

The extension is a positive move that will hopefully help reduce the threat of these traders. More on this will be highlighted in next week’s issue, which features our very first Beds Supplement.

Independent delivers sales growth ahead of anniversary year Scottish furniture business Gillies has reported another year of consecutive sales growth. According to its latest accounts for the year ended 31st August, 2018, total sales rose 2.8% against the previous year’s 4.3% growth. Gross margin fell from 50.1% to 49.8% and this reflected an increase in supplier prices, as well as a ‘competitive market place’ in which the company operates. Gillies, which trades from its flagship store in Broughty Ferry and from stores in Aberdeen, Montrose, Perth and Inverness, saw additional costs incurred during the year with the introduction of a training programme for staff, a successful project to de-risk the company’s final salary scheme pension fund, and store refurbishments works. Net profit resulted at £1.018m, slightly down from its profit of £1.253m. However, the business said it was satisfied because of the additional costs mentioned above. Retention of profits within the business led to an increase in the net assets of the company on its balance sheet from £18.3m in 2017 to £18.6m in 2018. Commenting on the results, Ian Philp, managing director, said: “The financial year was another one of challenging trading conditions. The political uncertainties of “Brexit” continued to create uncertainty throughout the 2018 year as they continue to do so in 2019. “The company has a small but experienced management team, supported by a team of more than 180 valued staff. It is only with hard work and passion that the company is able to deliver a high quality offering to its customers, keeping the business at the forefront as the prime house furnishers in the North and North East of Scotland.” Looking to the future, Ian added: “In 2020 the business, which has been within the ownership of the same family since 1895, will reach the milestone of 125 years of trading. As it approaches that milestone the business is financially strong, with a committed team at its heart and is well placed to deliver the first-class service that existing and new customers deserve.”

MANUFACTURER SECURES NEW BANK FUNDING Furniture manufacturer Buoyant Upholstery has secured a new £8m bank facility from Barclays. The new funding will offer the company more flexibility as well as providing ‘certainty for the business’, allowing it to respond to any future Brexit challenges and to react to ‘market forces’ as well as ‘introduce more product lines’. Buoyant Upholstery, based at Oakbank Mill in Nelson, added that it expects to exceed a turnover of £48m in the year ahead.

BFM TO MOVE OFFICES TO OXFORDSHIRE The BFM (British Furniture Manufacturers) has announced plans to relocate its office from Long Eaton to Bloxham Mill in Oxfordshire. The new office is 10 minutes from Banbury with fast trains to Birmingham and London, and is a good central base to access members and suppliers across the UK. The move concludes a project to develop a virtual workplace solution following a review and modernisation of operations by recently-appointed managing director, Nick Garratt. Internal administration processes have been improved with the introduction of a cloud-based, document management system. These changes have enabled the business to operate without the need for a permanent, physical office space. Although the team will work remotely, the new office has a central switchboard answering service to maintain good communication between BFM and its members. This virtual workplace solution enables the team to be located in any location, which will open up the available talent base for the organisation to grow its range of services in the future. Nick Garratt commented: “Although BFM is not a manufacturing business, productivity is crucial to any organisation and moving to a virtual workplace has been part of a drive to streamline systems, decrease costs and improve efficiency. This will help us to create a platform to focus our resources on improving the service we deliver to our members. Furthermore, we are doing our bit for the environment by reducing our carbon footprint through reduced travel and use of paper.” The move is planned to take place on 1st August.

Investment drives growth Online flooring specialist UK Flooring Direct Limited has reached record sales as it earmarks a £100m turnover target. Hinckley-based UK Flooring Direct posted a 60% year-on-year increase in sales to £35m during 2018 and is currently on course to achieve up to £50m in the year ahead. The business, which aims to reach the £100m turnover milestone in the ‘coming years’, has also expanded its workforce beyond 100 staff as well as continuing to invest almost £8m in operations. Part of this investment has been in technology, around £1.5m, which included a new online platform, whilst £7.5m has been invested in marketing. Jason Ashby, who founded the business back in 2005, said in a statement that the company will continue to invest to fuel future growth to keep ahead of online retail, which ‘continues to evolve’ leaving ‘no time to stand still’. Retailer delivers positive year Independent furniture and home furnishings retailer Heal’s has reported a second straight year of turnover growth as sales edged closer to the £30m mark. According to its latest filed accounts to 15th September, 2018, total sales rose by 12% to £29.7m from £26.6m in 2017. The last time Heal’s saw revenue surpass £30m was back in 2008 when sales stood at £32m. Heal’s stated that if its Tottenham Court Road in-store concession sales were included, total revenue would stand at £27.6m, generating an uptick of 9% year-on-year. Gross profit increased 11% to £15.2m from £13.6m, whilst pretax losses narrowed to £4.1m compared to its loss of £6.4m last year. However, the company reported a positive EBITDA, the first such profit for a number of years.

Special furniture exhibition at museum

Detailed within its report, Heal’s said that operating losses of £3.3m recorded in 2017 reduced to £0.3m in the period, representing a 78% improvement. This was driven by growth in its online business as well as rationalising its cost base.

The Shaw Building Group has teamed up with designer’s Peter Salter and Fenella Collingridge on a new furniture piece that is due to be exhibited at Sir John Soane’s Museum as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

One store was closed and two opened during the period, whilst its Cobham pop-up store — selling clearance lines — proved a big success. It closed in November 2018 as planned.

Inspired by earlier examples of social seating, such as the medieval “poche” window seats at Stokesay Castle, proposal B’s unique construction and invention brings together comfort, craftsmanship, skill and attention to detail. proposal B will be at Sir John Soane’s Museum until 16th June. The museum added: “Visitors are invited to sit within the space created by proposal B and manipulate its moving parts. In this way, proposal B challenges the notion of museums as places solely about looking at objects, instead seeing them as social spaces that encourage participation and interaction — an idea in keeping with Soane’s conception of the museum as an ‘academy of architecture’ that fosters debate and discussion.”

Furniture prices drive up inflation Furniture prices rose during May as the non-food sector pushed overall inflation up. According to the latest BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index for May 2019, overall shop prices accelerated to 0.8%, up from 0.4% in April. This is the second highest inflation rate in the last six years. Non-food prices increased by 0.2% compared to the fall of 0.6% in April. However, the BRC said that the price rises in non-food categories was down to an increase in furniture prices. NBF APPOINTS NEW BOARD DIRECTOR Jim Gerety, managing director of Vispring, was elected a director to the National Bed Federation (NBF) Executive Board at its AGM. The NBF is the recognised trade association representing UK manufacturers of beds and their suppliers. Founded in 1912, its members account for about 70% of the total UK bedding turnover. Jim, (pictured), who has been active member of the NBF since 2012 and has previously sat on the marketing committee, said: “I am delighted to be joining the Executive Board and I am hoping to bring a more exportfocused view to the NBF as well as fully supporting the entire UK-based bed making business in becoming more professional and profitable.” Jim has been at the helm of Vispring for three years, responsible to the Flex Group, its Madrid-based owners, for all aspects of the business worldwide where the UK represents 55% of sales and exports 45% of its output. Previously he was the UK sales director for four years. Prior to Vispring, Jim was merchandising director at House of Fraser, firstly on womenswear and lingerie before moving into homeware and furniture.

‘BREXIT IS DAMAGING BUSINESS’ Bacup-based furniture manufacturer J and J Ormerod (JJO) has warned that the constant uncertainty is having a massive impact on companies stifling investment and forcing stockpiling. The kitchen, bedroom and bathroom manufacturer has filled its warehouses with £1m worth of extra materials and components, many of which it sources from Europe, to ensure it has the capacity to continue to fulfil orders. However, that stockpiling, which has been going on for more than six months, hampers the company’s ability to make capital investment in new machinery to improve manufacture. Joint managing director Stephen Greenhalgh, who is also director of the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, said the political stalemate and impasse needed to end. Stephen said: “We are in no-man’s land where Brexit could occur at any time. We have had no choice but to maintain this stockpile of reserves while we wait for a Brexit deal to be agreed and implemented. Without the necessary components and materials we would not be able to meet our customers’ needs and that is uppermost for any business to survive. “Some of our products are on 12-week lead times and so we have to be one step ahead of the game because there is uncertainty about what impact a deal or no deal may have on the importation of items from Europe. JJO is far from just the only business to be affected.”

IKEA invests in Indian start-up

Renowned designer joins the Chippendale team

Swedish furniture business IKEA has announced a new partnership with an Indian interior design platform.

Ben Dawson, the internationally-renowned furniture designer and maker, is joining the Chippendale International School of Furniture as Design Tutor.

Following a successful $70m funding campaign raised last year, Livspace has now struck an undisclosed investment deal with Ingka Investments, the VC arm of IKEA parent Ingka Group, which operates 90% of IKEA’s retail footprint. Livspace, a start-up that also includes other high-profile investors, such as Goldman Sachs and TPG Growth, said it would use the funds to expand its store presence by opening at least 25 in India. Primarily focusing on the domestic market, IKEA did reveal that it has international expansion plans further down the line beyond India but stressed that it was around 12-18 months away from materialising those plans. Livspace is a platform that connects homeowners with designers and the supply chain using 3D technology.

CELEBRATION OF CRAFTSMANSHIP AND DESIGN Be inspired and uplifted by the beauty and skill on display at Cheltenham’s contemporary furniture exhibition. More than 70 small designer-maker workshops from across the British Isles will be exhibiting around 300 pieces of their newest work from 17th 26th August. In this special 25th anniversary year a new initiative will shine a light on the very best emerging designers as a number of furniture schools will be showcasing the work of their students, alongside a solid core of well-established and respected makers within the field. This combination of new and old is set to create an exciting and unique display. Exhibition director Jason Heap said: “The quality of training being offered today is exceptional and I am confident that visitors will be blown away by the standards at which these new designer-makers are already working.” The exhibition boasts an array of unique, diverse pieces and with styles ranging from simple and sleek to flourishing and fancy there is plenty to suit all tastes. This year sees the inclusion of work by established makers Marc Fish, Matthew Burt, and Waywood as well as the last pieces completed by the late David Savage. Meanwhile, new exhibitors such as Jonathan Vaiksaar, Richard Frost and Hyde and Gallagher will certainly not disappoint. Stewards and a selection of exhibitors will be on hand to advise visitors each day, discuss the work exhibited and possible commissions. Several fantastic awards return again to help promote and support all areas of the bespoke furniture movement, from students and new makers to British timber and design excellence.

Ben (pictured) will also have a secondary role supporting recent graduates who have set up in business in incubation space on the school’s campus. “Ben’s role with us won’t be full-time as he is also moving his own furniture design and making business to the school,” said Tom Fraser, deputy principal. “While his teaching duties will therefore be limited, he brings with him a wealth of expertise and experience to inspire our students.” The Chippendale school in central Scotland runs one-week introductory courses, one-month intermediate courses and a nine-month professional course. This year, from an annual intake of 26 students, the school’s professional students come from the UK, USA, Ireland, Germany, Canada, Poland, Australia and Iceland. Ben’s career as a furniture designer and maker spans five decades, working internationally for corporate, public, institutional and private clients.

B&M said its Homewares ranges endured a period of marked underperformance in the second and third quarters of the year but after a complete category review, reset and remerchandising of its stores, featuring improved product and display, Homewares have resumed growth and have returned to positive like-for-like growth on the prior year. The retailer added: “This remains a large, highly fragmented market from which a number of existing retailers are continuing to exit space either locally or nationally and, with our strengthening offer, we see this as an important opportunity for B&M.” Pre-tax profit resulted at £249.4m, up by 10.3% compared to its profit of £226.1m recorded last year.

Bed-Time! It’s

Get ready to join hundreds of bed buyers and specifiers for two days of beds as the Bed Show returns for a milestone anniversary — its 10th year.

The Bed Show, 2019 Organised by the National Bed Federation (NBF), the Bed Show returns to the Telford International Centre, 17th18th September, and is an exhibition not to be missed as it celebrates the coming together of the very best in British and Irish bed manufacturing, their component suppliers and retail customers — all under one roof. Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF, told Cabinet Maker: “To be celebrating our 10th year is unbelievable. Back in 2010, we felt there was a niche in the trade show calendar for an event that was devoted to beds at a time of year favoured by the trade. To be supported year-on-year by both exhibitors and visitors, shows we were right to launch such an exhibition. 2019 is already looking like a fantastic show. “It really is a one-of-a-kind show. It’s deliberately not too big or too fancy and specifically supports NBF members. The decision to limit the show to NBF membership means we can be certain that visitors come in the knowledge that the companies exhibiting are all part of a 7th June 2019 | 12

Interior fit-out firm secures £5m projects Interior fit-out specialist GRAHAM’s has secured projects to the value of £5m to fit out three new stores for Next. The three stores, which include The Quays Shopping Centre, Newry; Arnotts in Dublin; and Thistles Shopping Centre in Stirling; will add to its impressive portfolio of work completed for the fashion and homewares retailer. Already-completed projects include Ireland’s largest Next store, which spans 43,000sq ft in Newtownabbey, as well as the popular Next outlet store at the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness. The existing Next store in The Quays Shopping Centre in Newry will receive a £1.2m fit-out, and once complete, the floor space will have increased by 10,586sq ft and include a new coffee shop. The £2.3m transformation of the extended retail space that Next will occupy in the Arnotts building in Mary Street, Dublin, is also a significant contract. The fit-out will last approximately 20 weeks and is scheduled to be completed in August 2019. Works will include the installation of escalators and lifts, a new staircase, floors, fitting rooms, fixtures and fittings. Commenting on the contract, GRAHAM’s said: “The forthcoming projects will see GRAHAM deliver interactive, functional and sleek retail spaces that help Next to meet the evolving demands of its modern consumers. CONTRACT LOSS IMPACTS FLOORING GROUP Flooring group Forbo has reported a growth in sales and profits although its UK division suffered a decline. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31st December, 2018, total sales rose 3% to £125.5m from £122.1m in 2017. The uptick was largely driven by an increase in overseas sales, up by 13% to £69.1m from £60.8m, as UK sales fell 8% to £56.3m from £61.3m. The decline in the domestic market was due to the loss of a contract with Carillion for the supply of flooring goods to the Ministry of Defence during 2017, with the full impact being felt during the reported year. Taking this out of the equation, UK sales were flat. Meanwhile, international sales were buoyed by the introduction of modular products, which continues to deliver encouraging results. Pre-tax resulted at £11.3m, more than doubling from its profit of £4.6m recorded the previous year.

HOSPITAL PROJECT WORK COMPLETED Mansfield-based contract furniture manufacturer Deanestor has completed its latest contract worth £1.4m. More than 5,000 items of hospital furniture were manufactured and installed by Deanestor for the new Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Built by Laing O’Rourke and designed by Ryder Architecture with NBBJ, the £212m hospital provides high-quality acute facilities in a welcoming, therapeutic environment. Deanestor manufactured more than 300 bespoke bedheads, which were finished in a natural oak laminate and had provision for medical gases, electrics, nurse call system and lighting. The bedhead units were designed for the specific requirements and layout of each individual room with more than 40 variations. They were installed by Deanestor’s own fitting team with removable panels for easy access to services. Co-ordinating floor-based fixed furniture was also provided by Deanestor — shelving, cupboards, worktops and cabinets across the hospital campus. Laboratory furniture was manufactured as part of Deanestor’s contract for areas including chromatography, blood transfusion, histopathology and microbiology. Stephen Howie, design manager for NHS Dumfries and Galloway, said: “We are more than satisfied with the products that Deanestor has manufactured for our new acute hospital. “The bedhead IPS panel units have helped to create an ambiance within the patient bedrooms and have contributed to reducing the clinical feel of these rooms. The quality and robustness of benching and cabinetry stands out and gives confidence that we will have many years of problem-free usage with the products.” William Tonkinson, managing director of Deanestor, said: “This project went very well from our perspective. We had highly-organised logistics for efficient deliveries to site, and our project management team required little intervention from the contractor. We are pleased to be working on our next major healthcare project with Laing O’Rourke.”

Kitchen business returns to profit, despite flood Bespoke kitchen furniture maker Harvey Jones has reported a slight decline in sales as the business returned to profitability. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31st December, 2018, total sales fell by 0.4% to £20.1m from £20.2m in 2017, narrowing from its previous year’s decline of 4.2%.

Largest-ever education contract secured Contract furniture specialist Deanestor been awarded its largestever contract in the education sector. The £3m project is for the manufacture and supply of furniture, fittings and equipment for the new £55m Inverurie Community Campus — one of the largest school construction projects in Scotland.

Gross profit also declined by 1% to £9m from £9.1m, whilst pre-tax profit resulted at £159,830, improving from its loss of £108,628 recorded in 2017. Stated within its report, the company said the trading environment during the year was ‘weaker’ in comparison to previous years, although added that it continued to make internal investment. During the year its Winchester showroom experienced a large scale flood, which caused significant damage to the structure of the flooring and a large proportion of the display furniture.

The contract is Deanestor’s third school project for principal contractors, Robertson Construction.

As a result, the showroom was closed from 1st September to mid-December 2018 to complete significant building works. Despite the flood, the company took the opportunity to redesign and refurbish the showroom.

Due for completion early in 2020, the project for Aberdeenshire Council is being delivered by community infrastructure company hub North Scotland and will accommodate 1,600 pupils.

Harvey Jones has been established since 1986 and currently operates out of 32 showrooms across the UK, as well as its Cambridgeshire workshop.

Designed by architects Halliday Fraser Munro, the campus will also be home to St Andrews School for children with special educational needs. Deanestor will furnish and fit out 360 rooms across the campus in just 26 weeks, including science, food and design technology departments, specialist SEN facilities, general teaching spaces, sports and changing areas, reception, library and offices. The room layouts will reflect the latest thinking in curriculum delivery and colours will be bright and modern throughout, with an interior design scheme that links all internal learning spaces. Fitted furniture manufactured and fitted by Deanestor for the new campus will include 1,950 metres of shelving, 670 metres of laminate and laboratory worktops, 400 base and wall storage units, bag stores, more than 80 teaching walls, and more than 500 items of metalwork. Sixty serviced units with power, data or water supplies are being designed and manufactured by Deanestor for the laboratories. Commenting on the project, Iain Loud, senior design manager at Robertson Construction, said: “Deanestor met all our requirements for quality, cost, experience and strong financial stability. “This is a fast-track project that needs an open and collaborative approach. Deanestor is happy to work with our client to develop the most appropriate level of specification within the available budget. “Deanestor’s furniture and fitting-out contract at Bertha Park School, which is nearing completion, has gone very well and feedback about their site team has been hugely positive to date. Their design team has been terrific, very committed and happy to go above and beyond when needed to meet client needs.”

REDUCED MARGINS PUT OFFICE FURNITURE COMPANY IN THE RED

New hygienic furniture range launches

Newport-based office furniture supplier Bisley has reported a growth in sales, although profits fell into the red.

Connect 2 Cleanrooms has partnered with Sealwise, the waterproof construction board manufacturer, to develop a new hygienic furniture range exclusively for the cleanroom market.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31st July, 2018, total sales rose 6.5% to £85.1m from £79.9m in 2017. UK sales were up 9.9% to £36.4m, whilst overseas sales fell 2% to £33.4m. Sales across the rest of the world increased 20.2% to £15.4m, although the proportion of overseas group sales fell slightly to 57.3% from 58.6%. Gross profit slipped 7.2% to £21.7m from £23.4m, whilst its pre-tax profit of £292,000 recorded last year declined to a loss of £4.5m. Stated within its report, the company said that it had been a ‘difficult’ year, despite the growth in turnover with the demand for its traditional steel storage products remaining in decline across the UK market. Gross margins continued to fall and reduced by 3.7% to 25.6% from 29.3% in the previous year, which was the main cause for the group’s loss. Distribution costs increased 8.6% as a result of higher fitted furniture projects. In order to reduce the group’s operational cost base, Bisley incurred restructuring costs of £0.8m. In closing statement, Bisley said: “We acknowledge the significant and continued contribution of our entire workforce in what was a difficult year, and particularly their flexibility in adapting to the increasingly variable and complex requirements of the market.”

Sealwise waterproof construction board (WCB) is a unique sheet material with a foam core of closed cell PVCU and an outer skin of solid PVC. Both layers are chemical resistant and impervious to liquid, protecting against microbial contamination. “Our collaboration with Sealwise has been exciting as their WCB has been specifically developed for areas where the threat of contamination is continuous. Together we have produced a range of tables, step over benches, lockers and storage solutions that cleanroom users need. The durability of these products will mean they offer a cost-effective solution, offering value for money and reducing risk in cleanrooms,” said Sam Armer, product and process development manager at Connect 2 Cleanrooms. Available exclusively through Connect 2 Cleanrooms’ online shop, the furniture can be used for gowning area fit-outs and workstations. It has been developed initially for the healthcare market. Ben Griffiths, national sales director at Sealwise, commented: “Connect 2 Cleanrooms’ exceptional understanding of customer needs and wealth of experience make them the ideal fit for us as a partner in the cleanroom market. We’re excited to focus our combined efforts in providing a range of innovative furniture solutions that are unique to what their customer base will have seen in the past.”

SOLUTION The contract furniture trade is a specialised area of the industry, especially on the upholstery and mattress side for use in commercial premises, but with their experienced and knowledgeable team, Gallery Direct can offer a solution to clients for a wide range of projects, both commercial and domestic. All domestic upholstery components and composites used in furniture have to pass British Standard specific testing requirements for flame retardancy, however upholstered furniture and mattresses for commercial use must comply with stricter UK fire regulations with more stringent testing requirements. 7th June 2019 | 20

There are a wide range of hospitality businesses recognised as requiring upholstery and mattresses that meet these stricter regulations and which, therefore, must use ‘contract’ mattresses and beds. These include hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, and pubs, to name but a few.

All are made in their factory in the UK, using high-quality materials and components, and manufactured to meet the required UK safety and performance standards. For larger orders, untreated fabric can be sent to be treated and then tested to ensure compliance. If companies have their own treated fabric, this can be used, but it has to be retested.

Humanscale UK & Ireland talks about its recent expansion in the UK after opening a second British showroom in Manchester.

Pakize Nasuh, managing director of Humanscale UK & Ireland, told Cabinet Maker that London — the home of its original UK showroom, which opened in Clerkenwell back in 2001, and its first away from its New York head office — has continued to play a key role in the business and was actually the catalyst of its international growth. With a renewed focus on the UK, and six months on from its Manchester opening, Pakize revealed: “The showroom further reinforces Humanscale’s presence in the North of England. Located in the Old Town, formerly home to the infamous Factory Records label, the unique space is the perfect backdrop to showcase the inspired humancentred products for which Humanscale is renowned.” The brand sees the UK market as of great importance and, despite ongoing uncertainty created by the continuing drama around Brexit, the business remains unfazed by events and continues with the British mantra of ‘keeping calm and carrying on’. In fact, Humanscale UK’s multi-million pound turnover represents the largest office outside of the USA. “The UK is the largest single market outside of North America,” Pakize said, continuing: 7th June 2019 | 24

Freedom task chair “It is a centre for business and it is highly likely to continue to be the case regardless of Brexit. Humanscales’ success now allows us to invest further in our showrooms to communicate our vital messages to a wider audience.” The UK has formed part of its global expansion strategy and follows its other recent showroom openings in Paris, Dubai and its native New York, with a further space set to launch in Bangalore later this year. In keeping with new launches, Humanscale, which designs and manufactures ergonomic products that aim to improve health and

comfort at work and in the home office environment, has also launched a special campaign for one of its signature products, the Freedom chair. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Niels Diffrient’s Freedom chair. Launched by Humanscale, the Freedom chair revolutionised the seating industry as the first ever self-adjusting chair. It is revered for its elegant simplicity, functionality and timeless design. To mark the occasion, Humanscale has launched a yearlong initiative that will include various events and activations around the world, including the recent Shanghai Design show, which took place in March. “To date, sales total more than two million

pieces, whilst Freedom has also won 10 international awards as well as being featured in around 50 TV shows and films,” Pakize said. “The iconic chair is currently on an official world tour, which continues throughout 2019, making monthly appearances in cities and important events around the globe, including the recent Milan show, London’s Clerkenwell Design Week and New York’s ICFF, plus many more to follow. As the first chair to adapt to real people and real movement, these activations give trade and consumers the opportunity to personally experience and celebrate Freedom’s intuitive ergonomic design and the legacy of Niels Diffrient.” Another new concept for 2019 is in the form of a collaboration with textile with awardwinning textile designer Elizabeth Whelan, as the partnership has launched Fourtis, a versatile and sustainably-crafted performance textile. Pakize revealed: “Inspired by the Latin word fortis, meaning strong, this fabric is the ultimate ratio of durability and flexibility, thanks to a unique weave offering four-way stretch. This inventive construction allows Fourtis to closely conform to Humanscale’s ergonomic seat cushions so end-users can feel fully supported as they move in their chair.” Sustainably manufactured to create a net positive impact, Fourtis is compliant with the Living Product Challenge, a rigorous framework for healthy and sustainable products from the International Living Future Institute. It also maintains industry-leading

standards for performance without the use of a stain-resistant finish, a prevalent practice in the furnishing industry that puts users into direct contact with toxic chemicals. For an overall healthier and more sustainable chair, Fourtis can be applied to Humanscale’s Smart Ocean task chair, a certified Living Product. “When designing Fourtis, I focused on its intended outcome. The fabric needed to exhibit four-way stretch, have a blend of at least two colors, meet Grade 1 standards, and qualify for the Living Product Challenge,” said Elizabeth Whelan. “Because of these diverse criteria, there really is more to this fabric, and most Humanscale fabrics, than meets the eye. I hope that with this inventive line, we’ll be able to move the market on what the future of fabric textile design will be.” With sustainability of both design and materials at the heart of what Humanscale does, as well as solving functional problems, the business works tirelessly to consume less of the Earth’s limited resources. It is something that the brand is incredibly proud of, as Pakize concludes: “By combining ergonomics, high design aesthetics, health and well-being, and ethical materials, we have had a major impact on office life from Indianapolis to India, and on businesses from Apple to the BBC. Our philosophy can be summed up like this — good design achieves more with less.”

BOOSTING

Chris Scott, managing director at Dams, shares the latest company updates from product, factory and online developments.

GROWTH

In 2017 office furniture maker Dams celebrated its 50th anniversary. Since then, the business has showed no signs of taking a back seat and has continuously invested to cement a firm platform for the next half century. Starting in chronological order, 2018 marked a massive year of investment that saw Dams open its new multi-million pound UK manufacturing facility at its head office site on Knowsley Industrial Park in Knowsley, Merseyside. The new 85,000sq ft building officially opened in October last year and consolidates the four sites that Dams previously operated from into one larger site, which includes a new upholstery factory and assembly department. Eight months on and the expansion has improved operational efficiencies as well as boosting its UK manufacturing capabilities. Chris Scott, managing director at Dams, told Cabinet Maker: “The investment will also ensure that we can reduce lead times on our expanding portfolio of made-to-order products, as well as developing the skills needed for the office furniture industry of the future.” Roll on to 2019 and the business has focused on the digital aspect following its physical improvements. Dams has completely relaunched its main website, dams.com, with 7th June 2019 | 26

a refreshed design, as well as launching a new standalone platform for its Social Spaces Furniture division. Chris revealed: “We are pleased with the relaunch of our dams.com website, which has been designed with a modern new look, user-friendly navigation and been updated with the latest company news and product information. “The redesigned site offers quick and easy access to essential information and features, while offering a more comprehensive understanding of Dams core competencies, company services and customer support, all with a fully-responsive design allowing

users to access the site on desktops, tablets and mobiles. And we still have our industryleading MyDams customer portal, which is an online marketing support service with promotion flyers and literature available to personalise, an easy-to-use quoting system, downloads section, stock check facility and our extensive product library.” The online innovation hasn’t stopped there, as Chris continued: “We have launched our new Social Spaces website, www. SocialSpacesFurniture.com. Social Spaces is Dams’ collection of innovative, contemporary, designer products for corporate breakout spaces, open plan offices, reception areas, meeting rooms, dining areas, and much more.”

The Hushhub from Dams’ Social Spaces portfolio Keeping true to its core portfolio, all products within its Social Spaces division are designed and manufactured in the UK by Dams. The new standalone website offers quick and easy access to essential product information, images and features, while offering a more comprehensive understanding of the company’s services and manufacturing capabilities. “SocialSpacesFurniture.com also offers updated information on case studies to read how we have created stimulating and modern working environments for our clients,” Chris added. “The downloads section is a resource of 2D and 3D CAD files, images and catalogue sections, all available at the click of a button, with a mobile-friendly, fully-responsive design to provide an optimal viewing experience on all devices. “We are thrilled to introduce our new Social Spaces website to our customers, partners and visitors who are looking to understand the breadth of our Social Spaces designer furniture products and services. This new website provides an ideal shop window for our Social Spaces range and enhances our commitment to creating the best experience for our customers and website visitors as possible. We look forward to feedback from visitors and exciting new developments to come.” Dams Social Spaces portfolio was launched in 2016 to cater for the growing demand for design-led soft seating furniture to transform the office environment into a modern, multifunctional workspace where people can meet, relax, work or dine in comfort. In keeping with products, new for 2019, Dams has launched the Dynamo Ergo chair, which provides ‘new levels of comfort and support’ that suits the ergonomic needs of each individual user. Chris explained: “The foundation of the

Dynamo Ergo chair (pictured top right) is the robust chrome frame and base, which adds immense strength, complemented with a breathable mesh or luxurious bonded leather seat and back (with optional headrest) for an exquisite seating experience. “The little brother of the Dynamo Ergo is the Dynamo chair, with the same split backrest design and auto-adjusting lumbar support. Dynamo has been designed for the modern, hard-working office environment where ergonomic, mesh-back posture seating is combined with contemporary styling, an airmax seat and a choice of a black or white frame for an exciting seating experience.” The year has seen an encouraging start for the business, which comes off the back of 2018’s turnover growth of £42.2m — representing an increase of 7.9%, with all markets experiencing growth. Detailed in its latest accounts, UK sales rose 6.7%, whilst EU and outside the EU sales climbed 156% and 7.1% respectively, resulting in a pre-tax profit of £5m — also registering positive growth of 16.2%. With its latest product innovations and company developments expected to grow the business further during 2019, Dams continues to remain at the forefront of being a leading provider within the office furniture sector. “We always encourage our customers to come and visit us to see and experience our products, as this is the ideal way to introduce customers to new product ranges and gather feedback for further product and service innovations. Customers are always welcome to come and see us,” Chris said.

NEW Guest bed

Stephen Eccles, managing director at Mattison Contract Beds, shares its latest company developments with two new senior appointments and one new collaborative partnership. Since 1862, Mattison Contract Beds has established itself as one of the industry’s leading manufacturers of contract beds. Known for producing mattresses, divan beds, headboards, sofa beds, guest beds and bedding accessories, which all comply with UK fire regulations, for the hotel and contract market, the company has continued to invest with the ambition to add to its long-lasting legacy of more than 150 years of experience. This year, Mattison Contract Beds, a division of the Mansion House Bedding Company, has — alongside on-going product development — expanded its workforce with two new key appointments as well as forging a new strategic partnership. Stephen Eccles, managing director at Mattison Contract Beds, recently confirmed the appointments of Nigel Boothman and Ian Murray as their new regional sales managers to cover the North of England. Speaking to Cabinet Maker, Stephen said: “We have identified an area where we lacked coverage. We have made the decision to invest in two new sales managers to fill this gap, significantly growing our company awareness 7th June 2019 | 28

in this area and driving potential sales.” The new appointments have expanded its sales team to seven, with Nigel joining Mattison Contract Beds from German-based textile company Delius Textiles, whilst also having previously worked in many areas of Europe as a sales manager during his career. Commenting on his new role, Nigel, who brings more than 40 years of hospitality sales experience with him, said: “I’m thrilled to join a well-known industry leader in Mattison Contract Beds, a company I’ve known in this sector for many years as synonymous with quality and service. I can’t wait to show my customer base the benefits of utilising our products.” Ian joins Mattison Contract Beds from BSN Medical with a wealth of sales experience and is keen to hit the ground running, based from his home in Durham. Ian added: “I am keen to get stuck in with this challenging new business field, transferring skills gained throughout my previous employments. It’s amazing how much work goes in to making a mattress!”

The appointment of additional sales managers follows significant financial investment into the company, including a major refurbishment of the factory and adjoining office block as well as investing heavily in new manufacturing equipment such as a CNC router and auto tufting machine, which aids both production speeds and the ability to produce bespoke products. Not only has the business invested within personnel, funding and machinery, Mattison Contract Beds has also found time to establish a new partnership with ASAP member House of Fisher. The collaboration has seen Mattison Contract Beds supply House of Fisher’s flagship property in Reading with new mattresses to ensure a great sleep experience for guests at the Reading Aparthotel on Kings Road. With a blend of studio, 1-, 2- and 3-bed apartments, this was a complex project, but was completed on time and on budget. The upgrade demonstrates House of Fisher’s dedication to providing its guests with the best possible experience when staying within

its serviced apartments — and its continued investment in achieving this. Stephen said: “We have worked closely with House of Fisher to ensure our part in this project has been completed on time and on budget. We have a large range of mattresses and divan bases for our customers to choose from and I feel their choice of our Hotel Monaco mattress will keep their guests coming back time and time again. “Notable features on this pocket sprung model are flag-stitched turning handles (making it considerably easier for housekeeping staff to turn the mattress) and breather vents to assist in keeping the mattress well-ventilated in all seasons. The mattress is completed with tufting; not only creating a beautiful decorative finish to the mattress but also creating high loft cushions

of super-soft comfort.” Trine Oestergaard Stafford, managing director at House of Fisher, said: “Selecting the appropriate mattress to deliver a fantastic night’s sleep for our guests was paramount. As such and with the guidance of our experienced supplier, we selected ‘The Hotel Monaco mattress’, which looks as good as it feels, with plush fillings including polyester, pure new wool and silk and offers 1,200 pocket springs!”

New regional sales managers Ian Murray, left, and Nigel Boothman

As an ASAP Business Partner, Mattison Contract Beds recognises that the serviced apartment industry is a ‘thriving alternative’ to the traditional means of guest accommodation and it has ‘wholeheartedly embraced’ this movement by not only becoming an ASAP Business Partner but also actively working with ASAP members to help this aspect of the industry forward. Stephen concluded: “We have an extensive portfolio of clients ranging from top hotel chains, independent and boutique hotels, cruise ships, through to interior designers. These are beds for business - designed for demand. “With the recent company investments we have made, we will now have a greater ability to expand our customer base and business further than ever before.”

chain for both the domestic and non-domestic sectors and any product within the furniture industry can apply for FIRA Gold Certification, whether it be an entire final product, or a component.

FIRA Gold is the recognised quality mark for products or installation services, all backed by rigorous testing from FIRA International’s UKAS-accredited lab.

Types of certification are:

To be awarded FIRA Gold, the product or installation service must be assessed against specified performance levels alongside a thorough factory audit. Holders are then reassessed through future testing and inspections to ensure standards remain high. FIRA Gold applies across the furniture supply 7th June 2019 | 34

• FIRA Gold Product Certification Encompassing all types of furniture and components, with holders from across the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, component, upholstery, office and worktop sectors. FIRA Gold Product Certification helps holders stand out to customers, manufacturers, retailers, specifiers and purchasers. It gives confidence products they are buying or

using have been proven to meet all current applicable standards. • FIRA Gold Installation Certification FIRA Gold often appears on tender documents for the public and private sector. To achieve FIRA Gold Installation Certification, companies must demonstrate installers are suitably qualified and all necessary procedures, documentation and quality standards are in place. This ensures the same high level of installation is offered to consumers throughout the country — no matter which contractor carried out the work. • FIRA Gold for Installation for Independent Retailers Designed for organisations with a turnover of

What the Gold holders say sought the professional services of FIRA International nine years ago to attain the FIRA Gold Certification for its kitchen products. FIRA Gold Certification is the only accreditation scheme recognised by the furniture industry and audited by an independent third party, a quality mark awarded by FIRA International.

Moores Furniture Group (Product Certification, holder since 2004, two certifications) Being a part of FIRA Gold is extremely beneficial and gives Moores the edge over other manufacturers. As products are independently tested and validated, FIRA Gold provides peace of mind to its clients, partners and consumers alike by ensuring products are of the highest standard. The FIRA Gold standard is maintained through regular audit testing and, as a result, customers know that the products they receive, developed by Moores, will always meet the required standards. The stamp of FIRA Gold also indicates the durability of the product so that the whole life cost of a Moores kitchen is covered, allowing effective budget planning for organised refurbishment projects. FIRA Gold has added value to Moores through reinforcing the high quality of the products it delivers. BA Components (Product Certification, holder since 2010, 2 certifications) For nearly 30 years, BA has worked hard to achieve a prominent position in the UK furniture industry due to the consistent quality of its manufactured kitchen and bedroom solutions, complemented with a reliable service to the KBB industry. In order to endorse this reliability in production quality, BA

Having this prestigious award recognises that BA’s kitchen furniture are manufactured to an exceptionally high level and demonstrates its close working relationship with FIRA International. Anne McLaughlin, business improvement manager, commented: “Product testing has become part of BA within our day-today business. We have rigorous systems in place to guarantee compliance to industry standards.”

Recticel (Product Certification, holder since 2016, three certifications) Recticel’s ambition is to make an essential difference in everyone’s daily experience of comfort. Working with the team at FIRA International gives it better insights and understanding of how that can be achieved. Its FIRA Gold Certification plays a valuable role in ensuring that the products it produces are fit for purpose for the furniture industry. The FIRA Gold Certification (which it has just received for the third time) translates into peace of mind for its customers. They know that every new product Reticel offers them has been tested to the highest standards of workmanship, quality, ergonomics, strength and durability. The scheme also covers an annual factory audit to ensure it produces

each component to the same standard as the original assessment.

Reticel said: “The confidence FIRA Gold gives our customers is something that they can pass on to their own customers: they can display in their showrooms and at furniture trade shows, knowing that the Recticel products they use don’t just meet the required standards, but exceed them.”

Wren Kitchens (Product Certification, Installation Certification, holder since 2015/2016, two certifications) Wren Kitchens said: “We are immensely proud to have been awarded the FIRA Gold Certification for both our products and our installation service — we are one of only two kitchen companies to have both of these accolades. “It lets our customers know that all Wren kitchens are designed, developed and built to the highest standard at our state-of-theart manufacturing facilities here in the UK. If they choose to use a Wren-approved installer, they will also have peace of mind that their kitchen will be expertly fitted as we only work with professional installers who share our values and commitment to our customers.” In total there are 51 companies who hold FIRA Gold certifications.

Leveraging

Logistics

Tom Martin, sales director from specialist parcel carrier Tuffnells, explores what you should be looking for in a logistics partner.

Consumer brands are now clamouring to drive down delivery times — to as little as one hour in the case of Amazon. But for furniture-makers and textiles suppliers, speed is not their only priority. The need for a flexible logistics partner, capable of handling bulky and/or fragile goods and responding to seasonal demand is ever increasing. Tom Martin, sales director from specialist parcel carrier Tuffnells, explores what you should be looking for in a logistics partner. Online retailers are well aware of the benefits of offering ultra-fast delivery services, particularly when competition is fierce, and the volumes are high. Courier speed has become a key point-of-difference for those selling widely-available household goods in a crowded marketplace. “It’s a different story for operators working in the furniture and textile industry,” Tom said. Manufacturers and suppliers understand the challenges involved in transporting big, long, bulky and often-fragile goods securely and efficiently for next-day deliveries across the UK — such as enormous rolls of fabric and furniture — so choosing a logistics partner with the right capabilities is key. 7th June 2019 | 36

Securing the right logistics partner allows furniture and textiles suppliers to get products to market faster. Agility is important at any time of year, but never more so than when capitalising on the interest generated following trade shows to secure new and repeat business or managing seasonal peaks. Tom continued: “In our experience, manufacturers and suppliers are always quick to capitalise on the latest interior trends. Wherever they are in the supply chain, businesses must be able to depend on their logistics partner to improve ROI and grow their market share, whether they are homegrown manufacturers or major suppliers importing goods across borders. “There are important factors to look for that can limit the risk of damage during transport too. For instance, does your carrier have safety-nets installed in their fleet to reduce the likelihood of any damage being caused by movement during transport? “It is also a good sign if your carrier’s fleet is equipped with the latest safety features — like dash-cams and reversing cameras. This signifies that they place a significant emphasis not just on speed of delivery, but

also ensuring the best standards and, by extension, the safest transfer of your valuable or bulky cargo. “We believe it’s wise to understand your carrier’s network. Ideally you’ll want delicate furniture to be transferred smoothly from your manufacturing base or workshop on to vehicles and into depot, or destination, as few times as possible. A local network like Tuffnells will make this more likely.” Tuffnells goes to great lengths to make business easier and more convenient for its furniture and textiles partners. Tom revealed: “For some of our long-standing customers where we have a good mutual understanding, we often drop a trailer off at a customer site early in the morning, leave it there for the day to be loaded up, before we return to collect it

FOR FULL STORIES AND DAILY NEWS UPDATES: WWW.CABINET-MAKER.CO.UK

for onward transport to its destination. This means there’s no rush to load the vehicle and a reduced likelihood of any accidental knocks, scrapes or damage during the transfer phase.”

“IN OUR EXPERIENCE, MANUFACTURERS AND SUPPLIERS ARE ALWAYS QUICK TO CAPITALISE ON THE LATEST INTERIOR TRENDS.”

Then there are the demands of peak-trading times, whether it is delivering the newseason collection for exhibitors around their trade shows, or ensuring garden furniture stock reaches the garden centres in time for the summer season. “A successful logistics partner has adequate plans in place to ensure consistently high service levels, even during the busiest of periods, and ensures on-time delivery KPIs are maintained during peak season,” Tom said. Latest industry figures show consumers spent around £17.5 billion on furniture and furnishings in 2017, a rise of almost 8% on the previous year. Exports also increased by 12% during this time to £1.136 billion, proving just how in-demand UK-manufactured goods are. With the

aQO

right logistics network in place to ensure fulfilment, this figure could increase further. Tuffnells is a specialist business-to-business carrier precisely because, as outlined above, the needs of manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors are so different. “It’s important not to simply replicate the service of a consumer-facing courier. Tuffnells uses its specialist fleet of vehicles, tail lifts and highly-trained drivers to give a tailored collection and delivery service to customers, across various industry sectors,” Tom said, concluding: “We collect on a daily basis from our customers’ locations and transport these parcels and freight through a closed and secure network of local depots offering a flexible next-day solution, so consignments reach their destination endpoint.”

LAST WORD GARY BAKER, FIESTA CHAIRMAN the next three years.

Use UK training providers or risk losing them The Closing the Gap conference event, which took place on Friday, 26th April at Furniture Makers’ Hall, London, was organised to inform companies of the looming employment crisis the furniture and interiors industry faces if the emerging skills gap isn’t addressed. Gary Baker opened the conference, reminding delegates of the circumstances that led to FIESTA’s formation in 2017, following the Bridging the Gap conference. Statistics from the 2015 Mind the Gap report, which was conducted by the Furniture Industry Research Association and funded by The Furniture Makers’ Company, showed that of those companies surveyed at the time, more than 50% of their workforce was over the age of 40. Furthermore, half of the employers questioned said they didn’t need apprentices or didn’t know where to find them. Four years on from the release of the report and the hope that the introduction of the apprenticeship levy in May 2017 would support businesses to recruit and train new talent has dissipated due to the complexity and rigidity of accessing and using funding. The Department of Education’s monthly apprenticeship statistics update in March revealed that apprenticeship starts for January were down 21% on the same month in 2017, before the levy was introduced. Meanwhile new research from the British Furniture Confederation has revealed that 79% of employers in the furniture industry are concerned that their ability to recruit adequately skilled staff will not improve over

Gary said: “The message to industry is ‘can you afford not to train your staff?’ Research clearly shows that companies that offer training programmes are much more profitable than those that don’t. There is also a very real danger that if large businesses don’t wake up and start using training providers, then these institutions will disappear. Funding from government is being reduced and unless people are enrolled on courses, training institutions won’t get the volume needed to run. If we don’t do something drastic now, we’ll come up against major problems in the future.” One of the aims of the Closing the Gap conference was to demonstrate the value of apprenticeships, which was discussed during a panel session with employers, training providers and an apprentice, analysing the myths and challenges. A myth raised during the panel was that apprenticeships don’t add value to businesses. Panellist Barry Moss, London and South East regional apprenticeship manager for Travis Perkins, responded that the organisation has seen an average return on investment of £38,000 per apprentice employed. However, for many SMEs, the issue with training has stemmed from an inability to access funding due to government cuts and companies being turned away.

Formed through a partnership between FIESTA and the Apprenticeship Management Group, Skills Plus offers businesses a specialist apprentice recruitment service, Apprentice Training Agency (ATA) and Levy Management Company. As Skills Plus is a levy payer, micro and SME non-levy paying employers can access a much wider selection of funded skills training, while large employers can outsource the apprenticeship management to obtain best value for money and real time monitoring from their apprentice levy digital accounts. Gary added: “Researching training providers that have funding for your training needs and understanding how to access funding all takes time. The Skills Plus solution will handle all of this and offer SMEs advice, guidance and access to the best training — from traditional apprenticeships to vocational courses — for new and existing staff at very little cost to your business.” A second Closing the Gap conference for businesses in the north of England is taking place on Tuesday, 2nd July at Panaz’s showroom in Burnley. To book a free ticket, interested parties should register via Eventbrite. www.fiestalearning.com
