Show season is well and truly upon the furniture industry. With the New Year firmly under way, trade shows including the AIS Furniture Show, IMM Cologne, Maison & Objet Paris, North Point and the January Furniture Show all start the year with a sense of optimism and purpose. On the back of a turbulent year for many, a show can be the ideal destination to escape from the day-to-day routine and enrich the lungs with a breath of fresh air for the upcoming year. After all, show season means buying season. From the aforementioned events all taking place in January, our attention turns to the latter of the bunch, the January Furniture Show. Seen as the most anticipated event in the furniture industry calendar, 2019 promises to be bigger and better than previous years. If you have kept pace with our previews ahead of the show, you will know that the JFS organisers have gone all out to deliver on the previous year’s requests. And listen they did. The new ‘Bed Zone’, the expansion of product categories including beds, lighting and accessories and the introduction of the Contract Trail are all some of the major new changes for JFS 2019. Inside this week’s editorial you will find the final showpiece covering the January Furniture Show as well as a Hall-by-Hall guide, with a handy sticker for the whereabouts of the Cabinet Maker stand highlighted. With all the variety, new designs, new product launches and new displays to see during the show, it is worth allocating some time to drop
by the Cabinet Maker stand in Hall 2 A10. Why? The obvious reason is to catch-up with the team and share your story. Adding to that this year is a historic display and the launch of a new competition as part of our JFS promotion and a certain 140-year anniversary creeping up. 2020 will be a massive milestone year for Cabinet Maker, so we thought we would kick-off the celebrations early to get the industry in the mood. So, what can you expect to see during the January Furniture Show? This special show issue features a mix of manufacturers from the beds, upholstery, living and dining sectors that are all unveiling their latest innovations to their respective audiences. The buzz JFS usually brings to the NEC in Birmingham is set to continue with preregistered visitor numbers above those of 2018. That alone is a positive start to the show and will no doubt encourage an atmosphere to remember across the five halls. I speak for the rest of the CM team to say we are extremely excited for what the 2019 show will bring and look forward to seeing you there. On that note, don’t hesitate to visit us on our stand and make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to become a winner in our special competition. Let the show begin! Dan Squires Editor

ARGOS OUTPERFORMS
Luxury fabric specialist Kobe UK has launched a brandnew collection of natural fabrics and nature-inspired prints. Artisan includes ten curtain and upholstery options encapsulating the essence of artisanal design and cultural flavours from across the globe. It features a plant-based fabric along with linens, jute, cotton and silk.
Argos ‘outperformed a weak general merchandise market’ during the third quarter with ‘strong sales growth in the key Christmas weeks’, said parent company Sainsbury’s. Group sales for the 15 weeks ended 5 January fell by 0.4%, with general merchandise sales down by 2.3%. Argos stores in Sainsbury’s supermarkets that have been open for more than one year grew like-for-like sales by over 10%.

Online sales continue to grow at sofa retailer; CFO succession process underway Sofa retailer DFS has reported double-digit sales growth as expectations for the year remain unchanged. According to its latest trading update for the five months ended 30 December, 2018, total sales rose 10%, with like-for-like sales across all brands experiencing growth. Online sales increased 22%. DFS said that Sofology has maintained its solid underlying trading progress with ‘good like-for-like growth’ and benefits from five successful new store openings since the start of the previous financial year. “We believe our trading in this period has seen some benefits from orders placed by consumers who deferred their purchase decisions from the fourth quarter of the prior financial year, given the hot weather at that time,” a statement said. Looking ahead, DFS added that it remains cautious but expects to benefit from ongoing investments in online, the continued integration of Sofology as well as the progress being made at Dwell and Sofa Workshop. “It is worth reiterating that the group has historically capitalised on any adverse trading conditions to build our market position and we continue to believe that our cash generation and long-term growth prospects will drive attractive returns for our shareholders,” DFS said. Furthermore, DFS confirmed that after six years with the company and over 30 in retailing, Nicola Bancroft, chief financial officer, has indicated to the board of directors her desire to retire from full-time executive roles. While a succession process is conducted by the Board, Mike Schmidt, currently chief development officer, will become interim chief financial officer from 1 April. Nicola said: “I feel very privileged to have been part of the DFS growth journey over the last six years and to have worked with so many special people. I am extremely proud of what we have achieved as a team. The group is in a very strong position and I am confident it will thrive in the years ahead.”

‘Consumers continue to seek promotions’, says Debenhams
BUSINESS DELIVERS STRONG END TO 2018
Department store retailer Debenhams has reported a decline in sales although remains confident on achieving full year expectations. According to its latest trading update for the six weeks and the 18 weeks to 5 January, 2019, total sales fell 3.8% with group like-for-like sales down 3.4%. UK sales declined 3.6% with weak store footfall offset by growth in digital. Debenhams said that the UK trading environment has continued to be volatile, with ‘clear evidence that our customers have been seeking out promotions’. “As a result we reinstated some tactical promotional activity in order to be competitive and manage inventory tightly, which will result in some gross margin erosion in the first half,” the company added. Sergio Bucher, chief executive of Debenhams, said: “We have worked hard to deliver the best possible outcome in very uncertain times for retailers. We responded to a significant increase in promotional activity in the market, particularly in key seasonal categories, in order to remain competitive for our customers. We have taken decisive steps to maintain rigorous cost and capital discipline and I am grateful to my colleagues for their hard work as we maintain a rapid pace of change. “In order to ensure that Debenhams has a sustainable and profitable future we need a strong customer proposition, a strengthened balance sheet and a reshaped store portfolio. We have a robust plan to deliver this and while there is much work still to do, the performance of our redesigned stores over peak, and continued outperformance in digital, reinforce our view that we are taking the right steps to protect the future of the business.”

POTENTIAL STORE CLOSURE Independent furniture business Somerset Re-Loved Furniture has confirmed it may close its store. Somerset Re-Loved Furniture, which is owned by Ziggy Vincent, is situated on Locking Road in Weston and specialises in refurbished furniture as well as bespoke designer pieces. The business said that reduced trading has meant it cannot meet its rent costs and it may be forced to close next month, although no official closing date has been confirmed yet. Commenting to local Press, the business owner said that ‘people just aren’t spending like they used to’ and that product sales have dropped from around 20 large pieces a month to just five smaller pieces. Somerset Re-Loved added that if it were to close it would downsize to continue its refurbishment projects in a workshop ‘from home’ as well as trading through its Facebook page.

London-based bespoke furniture and accessories manufacturer Lombok has reported a strong final quarter. According to its latest trading update for the final quarter of 2018, total sales rose 11% year-on-year, with online sales delivering a ‘very strong’ December, up by 45% on 2017. Lombok said that its new management team, which formed last year, and innovative new product ranges continued to pay dividends as customers ‘are clearly enjoying the enhanced product offer’. Lombok said: “The growth in online sales came from the furniture category, driven by new products in all ranges. Other contributing factors have been higher-than-planned core line sales and Lombok’s strong brand identity, which has been cleverly woven in to the new collections. “Working with a new supplier in Europe where lead times are shorter has also helped the brand to grow.”

Profit to be ‘substantially’ lower despite positive Christmas Department store retailer John Lewis & Partners has reported a positive Christmas, despite ‘oversupply of physical space’ and ‘weak consumer demand’ affecting the retail sector. According to its latest trading update for the seven weeks to 5 January, total John Lewis Partnership sales were up 1.4% to £2,207m. John Lewis & Partners gross sales were £1,160m, up 2.5% against last year and up 1% on a like-for-like basis, and outperformed the market by 2%, the company said. Black Friday contributed to the biggest sales week in John Lewis & Partners’ history. Sir Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, said: “Two main factors are affecting the retail sector — oversupply of physical space and relatively weak consumer demand. Despite this, we had a positive Christmas trading period. “We continue to expect full-year total partnership profits to be substantially lower this year, driven by slower sales growth over the year and margin pressure in John Lewis & Partners, along with higher costs, mainly as a result of our continued investment in our IT capability. “The actions taken in recent years to prepare for the current pressures in retail mean that the partnership has the financial strength and flexibility to pay a modest bonus this year, without impacting our ambitious investment programme. “However, the Board will need to consider carefully in March, following the usual process, whether payment of a bonus is prudent in the light of business and economic prospects at that time.”

BFM OUTLINES ‘NO-DEAL’ BREXIT IMPLICATIONS What are the implications of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit on the furniture industry? In these uncertain and turbulent times, BFM has summarised a recent government publication on the trading measures that would need to be put in place in the event of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit. The BFM guide picks out aspects that are relevant to the furniture industry. If they wish to continue trading with the EU, businesses will have to apply the same customs rules to goods moving between the UK and the EU as are currently applied in cases where goods move between the UK and a country outside of the EU. This means that the EU would require customs declarations on goods coming from, or going to, the UK, as well as requiring separate safety and security declarations for imports into the EU. Duty would be payable on certain goods and changes will occur to VAT collections. The guide identifies the steps companies need to take, whether importing materials or exporting furniture. It contains links to publications and sites where more information can be obtained and addresses particular issues as it affects certain products. Mike Dimond, director membership affairs, said: “A lot of the required new trading measures cannot be put in place overnight and if companies are concerned, they need to think about taking action now to prepare for a ‘no-deal’ potential. “Not only in making sure they have all the right import and export registrations and documentation, but are aware as well of issues such as those that relate to products that require a CE marking and third-party testing, as these will now need to receive a certificate of conformance from an EU-based approved centre if the goods are to be sold in the EU.”

ACID publishes new strategy for Design & IP Following Government’s failure, in recently published research on Design Rights’ Infringement, to address current trends and challenges in the design sector, ACID, supported by the ACID Council and the leading design-led organisations, has produced a blueprint strategy for Design & IP Policy. The recent IPO research provided no new insights into design infringement nor future proofing. It also failed to establish a robust methodology to measure infringement now and in the future. ACID is confident that the principles for a new “Design & IP Strategy to Safeguard the Future” will be a sound and realistic starting point to address the legitimate concerns and expectations of this sector, which is integral to the UK economy. Dids Macdonald OBE, chief executive of ACID and vice-chair of the Alliance for Intellectual Property, stated: “Endorsed by Government as the UK’s significant voice for Design & IP, I am confident that we can still continue to work with the IPO positively and in collaboration to re-engage with the design sector to ensure that the design sector’s IP needs are evaluated from a position of market reality supported by cost and time effective enforcement. “ACID will also work with an independent team to address the issue of design infringement measurement with a view to consolidating our strategy with robust methodology to measure design infringement for the future. This will ensure that policy is anticipatory and, as much as possible, including future proofing for decades come.”

This was 2.2% ahead of expectations. Stock in its endof-season sale (including the Black Friday event) was up +3% on last year. FURNITURE MANUFACTURER ENTERS ADMINISTRATION Furniture manufacturer Godfrey Syrett has entered administration and ceased to trade with immediate effect. James Lumb, Howard Smith and David Costley-Wood, of KPMG, were appointed joint administrators on 8 January.

ROWERS REACH HALF-WAY POINT OF TOUGH ATLANTIC CROSSING CHALLENGE A schedule of ‘eat, sleep, row, repeat’ is powering a group of North East rowers to success, as they reach the half-way point of one of the world’s toughest challenges. To support them on their gruelling 3,000 mile row across the Atlantic Ocean, Team Tyne Innovation has been working with a range of innovative North East companies, including health and wellbeing brand Mammoth, which has supplied custom-made mattresses for the team of four. The mattresses, made of Mammoth’s unique comfort technology, Medical Grade™ Foam and PostureCell® technology, have been specially designed to enhance the crew’s performance and recovery during their rowing schedule.
Following the appointment, the business has closed its three sites in Killingworth, Langley Moor and Belmont with around 200 jobs being lost.
The rowing team, made up of Phil Kite, Claire Hughes, Allan Huntly and Steve Sidaway, are competing in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, with a total of 28 crews representing 14 nations across the world.
It is understood that 11 of the manufacturer’s team have been kept on in the short-term to assist with the administration process.
They set sail on 12th December and it is estimated they will finish at the end of January.
The news comes off the back of previous reports in December last year that saw the business ‘explore different options’ to secure the future of the company.
Skipper Phil Kite explains the routine on board the 25ft boat: “Our schedule consists of two hours on, two hours off, 24 hours a day — in essence, eat, sleep, row, repeat — with sleep being the most precious commodity.
As part of this review, the company planned to close its factory at Langley Moor and told Cabinet Maker it had then entered into a ‘consultation process with employees at the Langley Moor site’ but couldn’t comment further. Now, administrators said in a statement that ‘challenging trading conditions in the bespoke furniture sector’, along with ‘severe cashflow difficulties’ led to its collapse. Detailed in Godfrey Syrett’s latest filed accounts for 2017, the firm generated £29.5m in turnover but made a pre-tax loss of £846,374 — widening from a loss of £598,784 in 2016.
w www.home.kpmg.com
“With a tough daily routine, it’s critical that the crew can have good sleep and that’s what Mammoth brings on board. Their mattresses are streets ahead of the competition and give us a significant advantage.” John Tuton, founder and managing director of Mammoth, said: “We’re thrilled to be supporting them with our specialist sleep technologies. It’s great to see their progress and we’re looking forward to hearing all about their fantastic adventure.” Team Tyne is aiming to raise £100,000 to support three North East charities — The Stroke Association, St Oswald’s Hospice and Daft as a Brush.

Call gæs out for entries for 2019 interzum award Organisers of industry event interzum have called for entries for its intelligent material and design 2019 award. Exhibitors at interzum — which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary — can enter their products, further developments and innovations into the competition by 8 March. A panel of expert judges will crown the best designs from the sector with “Tiny Spaces” among the categories for the first time. Participation in the award is free. The categories for which products can be registered are just as diverse as the furniture supplier industry and the interior construction sector themselves. They include “Materials and Surfaces”, “Fittings, Glass and Lighting” as well as “Upholstery Manufacture and Bedding”. Impressive designs are also sought from the field of “Mobile Spaces” and, for the first time, in the “Tiny Spaces” category too. With the introduction of this new category, competition organiser Koelnmesse is following the current trend for living in small spaces. The awarded products are showcased to the public during the trade fair as part of a lavish special exhibition. They are also permanently presented online on the interzum award website. The winners will be honoured on 20 May 2019.

KITCHEN SPECIALIST CELEBRATES 30 YEARS Kitchen furniture manufacturer Chiselwood is celebrating three decades during 2019. Mel and Martin Holliday founded Chiselwood back in 1989 out of the principles of craftsmanship, quality and authenticity. To celebrate this milestone in the company’s history, Martin will be designing a limited number of bespoke pieces, which will be unveiled through the year. The first piece is a dining table that seats 10 and features a Tabu veneer top and a painted base. The Lincoln-based business specialises in crafted kitchens and furniture, celebrating traditional British techniques from its own workshop, which was established in a converted brewery adjacent to their home in Saxilby. Commenting on its history, Mel, managing director, said: “In the national kitchen market in the UK we are relatively tiny, but we do have a voice. It’s a voice that says you can’t beat high-quality craftsmanship, and in an era when we want to know where our furniture comes from, who makes it and the skill involved in its creation, it’s an appealing message and the key to our success.” The business has won some significant national and international design awards over the years, most notably being the sole European kitchen manufacturer to reach the finals of the Sub Zero/Wolf Kitchen Design Awards in the USA. Last month saw their work throughout a local manor house and recent projects include the largest new build villa in the Caribbean and a client’s second home in Portugal.

WILLIS & GAMBIER TO CEASE OPERATION The global owner of UK furniture business Willis & Gambier has confirmed it will exit the UK market later this year. In a full statement, Samson Holding said: “Following a year of unprecedented market conditions Samson Holding, the parent company of Willis & Gambier, have decided to make strategic changes in its global operation. The United Kingdom, following the Brexit decision made in 2016, is facing extremely challenging market conditions, with little sign of clarity. Furthermore, the change in customer buying patterns and expectations has added to the placed pressure on our division in the UK, Willis & Gambier. “After significant soul-searching, we have concluded that Samson Holding is better placed to exit the UK market place by the end of April 2019, therefore Willis & Gambier will cease business operation at such time. Samson Holding will still have a presence in the UK with both hospitality projects and direct supply OEM projects, but both areas will be administered from Asia. “The team in Willis & Gambier are a committed, passionate and skilful group of colleagues and we will endeavour to help and support them through this transition. Normal repeat orders taken up to and including 28 February will be supplied in the normal manner whilst stocks allow, with deliveries completed by 31 March. “We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this sensitive time.”

Worst December in 10 years for retail sales
CASH FLOW CHALLENGES LEAD TO ADMINISTRATION; BUYERS SOUGHT
UK retail sales stalled in December, marking the worst Christmas in 10 years. According to the latest BRC - KPMG Retail Sales Monitor December 2018, total sales were flat at 0% year-on-year, with like-for-like sales down by -0.7%. Non-food retail sales were down at -0.4% over a three-month average.
Interiors fit out business Tienda Limited has entered into administration. Chris Pole and Mark Orton, from KPMG’s Restructuring practice, were appointed as joint administrators of Tienda Limited on 4 January.
Helen Dickinson OBE, chief executive, BRC, said: “Squeezed consumers chose not to splash out this Christmas with retail sales growth stalling for the first time in 28 months. The worst December sales performance in ten years means a challenging start to 2019 for retailers, with business rates set to rise once again this year, and the threat of a no-deal Brexit looming ever larger. “The retail landscape is changing dramatically in the UK, while the trading environment remains tough. Retailers are facing up this challenge but are having to wrestle with mounting costs from a succession of Government policies — from the Apprenticeship Levy, to higher wage costs, to rising business rates. “Retail makes up 5 per cent of the economy, yet pays 10 per cent of all business taxes and 25 per cent of all business rates. This is neither fair nor sustainable.”

Based in Grantham, the company is an interior fit-out specialist and was working on a number of live contracts at the date of the appointment. As a result of the administration, the company has ceased taking new orders, however, it is in discussion with its customers regarding completing live contracts. Administrators confirmed that 14 members of staff have been made redundant, whilst five have been retained to assist with the administration process. Chris Pole, partner at KPMG and joint administrator, said: “The business has recently experienced short-term cash flow challenges and was, unfortunately, unable to obtain any additional funding or investment to overcome these issues and allow it to continue trading. “In the immediate term, we are undertaking a review of the live contracts to ascertain whether we are able to complete these over the coming weeks. We are also seeking buyers for the company’s assets and would invite interested parties to contact us as soon as possible.”

‘Steady performance in difficult markets’ Department store retailer Marks and Spencer has reported a ‘steady performance’ during its third quarter. According to its latest trading update for the 13 weeks to 29 December 2018, total group sales fell by 3.9% to £3bn as UK sales on a like-for-like basis were down 2.2%. Within its clothing and home division, like-for-like sales fell 2.4% and represented £1.1bn, whilst its food sales were also down 2.1% on a like-for-like basis. M&S said that its transformation programme is ‘on track’ and that its clothing and home revenue reflected lower footfall to stores, which was partly due to an increase of closures. Online sales grew 14%, which was driven by improvements to proposition and operations. Stock into sales was down 25% as a result of planned reduction, and its full year guidance remained unchanged.
“Mr Hooker, who will be taking over as chief executive later in the year, thanked all staff for their valuable contribution and looked forward to the various projects and events planned for SATRA’s centenary year in 2019.”
Steve Rowe, chief executive, said: “Against the backdrop of well-publicised difficult market conditions our performance remained steady across the period. Our transformation programme remains on track.“

No Christmas cheer for UK footfall
BFM READY FOR JFS AS MD BIDS FAREWELL TO THE FURNITURE INDUSTRY
High street footfall continued to fall during December, marking a fifth consecutive month of decline.
The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has confirmed ‘huge’ changes for 2019.
According to the latest BRC-Springboard Footfall and Vacancies Monitor for the month, overall footfall fell by 2.6%. High street footfall declined 2.1%, a slight improvement on November’s fall of 3.8%. This was a lesser decline relative to the previous year when it fell by 4.6%.
The BFM said the January Furniture Show is the perfect platform to showcase those changes, with the whole team at the BFM stand this year.
Northern Ireland was the only region to see growth of 4.1%. The South West, the East, and East Midlands saw the deepest declines of 6.1%, 5.1% and 4.7% respectively. Retail parks experienced a decline of 2.1% in December, widening from a 1.4% fall in November. This was the sharpest fall since April 2018, when it fell by 1.8%. The worst performers were West Midlands, the South West and the East, where footfall decreased by 5.3%, 4.9% and 4.8%, respectively. Shopping centres saw a continued fall in footfall of 3.9%, a deeper decrease than the 3.8% decline of the previous month. December 2018 was the 21st month of consecutive decline. Overall, Northern Ireland saw growth of 2.7% decelerate to 2.2%, but it was for the third consecutive month the only region to show growth. The South West, the East and East Midlands experienced the deepest declines of 5.7%, 4.4% and 3.8%, respectively. Helen Dickinson OBE, chief-executive BRC, said: “The December results conclude a difficult year for retailers, with footfall dropping by 2.6% over the year. This continued drop, now onto its 13th month, continues to put pressure on bricksand-mortar stores up and down the country. “It comes at a time when retail is in the midst of a transformation, investing in technology and the online offer, as well as offering more experiences in physical shops.”

After eight years of strong leadership and growing the BFM to what it is today, Jackie is looking forward to retiring in May but will be sad to say farewell to all those that she has met along the way. Jackie said: “The 2019 January Furniture Show will be bittersweet. It is my last show with BFM so is the perfect opportunity for saying goodbyes to those I have met over the years. “Although I am looking forward to relaxing in retirement, I will be sad to step away from the industry.” Jackie will also be attending her last London Fabric Show with the BFM at Chelsea Football Club in March. The BFM team will be on hand throughout the January Furniture Show, ready to answer any queries about the industry and membership. BGF is the UK and Ireland’s most active investor in small and mid-sized businesses. The company will use the investment to expand its strong offering further into the UK, Northern Irish and Republic of Ireland markets. Eamon Donnelly, CEO of Uform, said: “We started a four-phase growth strategy in 2013 and the business has grown rapidly in that time. We’ve invested heavily in doubling the size of our operation and installed state-of-the-art paint lines to increase our productivity and product range. Uform is an ambitious company and we want to continue our pace of growth across the UK and Ireland in the coming years. “BGF is a good match for our business and we have already built a very strong relationship with the BGF team — they have bought into our vision of where we want to take the business and the network they bring has opened up many opportunities not just here, but also across Great Britain. Their experience will ensure they help us scale the business, enhance our operational competencies and align our strategic plan to achieve the next few years’ planned growth.” Patrick Graham, head of Central Scotland & Northern Ireland at BGF, said: “Uform has had an impressive growth rate over the last few years, tripling its turnover while investing in new technologies and expanding its production capabilities. “The company is a long-established family-owned business and one of the largest employers in the Toomebridge area. Eamon and his team bring a wealth of experience and we look forward to helping unlock the company’s potential to be number one in their sector. “Uform has set itself an ambitious growth target for the next three years and we’re delighted that BGF’s investment will provide the catalyst to achieving those goals.” Geoff Sharpe, head of corporate at Danske Bank, added: “Danske Bank has a long-standing and successful relationship with Uform, having supported the growth of the business as strategic banking partner for over 25 years. “Eamon, Paul and the senior management team are extremely passionate about their business and we are delighted to be supporting the future growth of the business together with BGF.” As part of its investment, Jim Meredith will be joining the board of Uform as the company’s non-executive chairman and Graham Clarke will join the board as BGF investor director. In its most recent accounts, Uform posted a rise 29% in turnover to £29.3m for the year ended 30 April 2018, marking its seventh year of successive sales growth. FURNITURE WORKSHOP DESTROYED
Commenting on the recognition, Trendsetter managing director Claire Watkin said: “As a business we are fully committed to ethical sourcing, traceability and sustainability. We have long been a forerunner in our industry, introducing a number of firstto-market products and we continue to lead our competitors in this area too.
Independent furniture business Boogaloo Boutique saw its workshop destroyed following a fire at the start of January.
“Where we have taken the decision to use preferred materials such as BCI cotton and Traceable Down we score highly.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue attended the scene after the fire broke out in car repair centre at Furze Hill Farm in Denmead. The blaze, which included multiple explosions, was caused by overheated gas cylinders, and spread to neighbouring furniture business Boogaloo Boutique.
“Our new Smartdown range (duvets and pillows) not only features a sustainably sourced BCI cotton cover but its fill is made from recycled PET. It has been extremely well received by our customers and end-users alike. It is also now a product that is included in our hospitality collection, catering for hoteliers’ increased desire to demonstrate sustainable business practices to attract guests.

F E A T U R E |J F S 2 0 1 9 Mason and Pearl Hall 1, Stand A80 The brand new Freya range is a design that epitomises modern Scandi chic. Simplicity in its curves and upholstered in a stylish woven yellow fabric, the sofa sits on angled natural wood legs. Available from stock in the UK, priced to sell… guaranteed for life.

that works for everybody. Feedback from our exhibitors and buyers is invaluable to us. There were clear messages at the end of the 2018 show — more beds, a really good lighting offering and more space for interior furnishings.
Skovby Hall E20 Hall 2, 2, Stand Stand E20 Skovby’s new vitrine represents yet another example of Danish simplicity at its best. It is shown here in natural solid walnut, but is also available in seven other finishes, such as oak and smoked oak. The vitrine is part of Skovby’s brand new range of storage furniture, which can either be fitted with steel legs in three different colours or wooden plinths in the seven available wood finishes.
“We listened to that and want to make the show what the industry wants it to be. We firmly believe that the 2019 event will be the best yet and will deliver excellent results for our hard-working exhibitors and keen buyers.” Here’s to a successful show all round and don’t forget to stop by the Cabinet Maker stand at A10-Hall 2. You could be the lucky winner!

TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE. BETTER IN DELIVERY, BETTER IN HANDLING, BETTER IN ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION. Our employees work together – and always in pairs. This way, our proven two-man delivery ensures a fast, tailored and reliable delivery. This is shown by our extremely low damage rate for all deliveries passing through our careful hands every year.

Baker Furniture unveils new product launches for the January Furniture Show. Fresh from its recent showing at the Brussels Fair, Baker Furniture looks to continue its strong growth from 2018 into the year ahead, with expanding its export market a key strategy. Sophia Squires, national sales manager at Baker Furniture, recaps on its success during 2018, as well as revealing all behind what to expect to see at its stand during the January Furniture Show. “2018 proved to be a busy year for Baker Furniture. Our previous launches from our Rustic Oak, Reclaimed, Heritage, Fusion and Little Tree Collections have done very well,” she said. “Brussels was a great show for Baker. Not only was the Brussels Fair a great opportunity to meet with existing export customers and gain new contacts, it also gave Baker the opportunity to give UK buyers a preview of what to expect at the January Furniture Show.” Exports were a key ingredient in Baker’s past year successes and it looks to capitalise on this opportunity further throughout 2019, as 18th January 2019 | 62
Above: Valetta Dining Pictured: Panama Dining Sophia explained: “The move in 2017 into the export market helped contribute to continued growth for Baker Furniture. Although export is very much in its infancy, the gaining of new accounts in Belgium, Holland and France has shown that the current product portfolio is transferable to other markets and Baker Furniture expects to see this aspect of the business continue to grow.”
The company hasn’t stopped to admire its achievements, but has continued to innovate its products ready for the January Furniture Show. So what’s on display this year? “Following a strong 2018 Baker Furniture is looking forward to welcoming customers old and new to our stand (G60 & F60) in Hall 1 at the 2019 January Furniture Show,” »

“THIS YEAR’S STAND WILL SEE EXPANSIONS TO SOME OF BAKER FURNITURE’S ALREADY POPULAR RANGES.” Shoreditch Dining
Sophia said, continuing: “This year’s stand will see expansions to some of Baker Furniture’s already popular ranges, including Nixon Dining and Valetta Dining, which are both from the very successful Reclaimed Collection. “The January Furniture Show is also a great opportunity for Baker Furniture to show some of its current bestselling ranges alongside new launches from its Fusion, Heritage and Rustic Oak collections.”
Baker Furniture also confirmed that the show will play as the perfect platform to launch a new collection, as Sophia revealed: “We will see the launch of the exciting new Artisan Collection, which features innovative dining, bedroom and occasional furniture from India. The Artisan Collections pair beautiful hardwood timbers with contrasting brass details to create elegant and versatile ranges.” Following the recent success of the Baker Furniture dining chairs, the company said there are new editions in both faux leather and velvet, which work perfectly with the new and current dining ranges. The new launches doesn’t stop there either. Sophia added: “This year will also see the launch of an eye-catching collection of occasional chairs in beautiful vibrant velvets. “Baker Furniture is committed to delivering a high level of service, quality and design. All the ranges share the same level of attention to detail, which makes them perfect for any setting. We look forward to seeing you at our stand.” Visit Baker Furniture in Hall 1, Stand G60 and F60.

A HISTORY OF Steve Congreve, of Healthbeds Limited, shares the history behind the brand and what to expect to see during the January Furniture Show.
Above: Smeaton Below: Insperation 4000
The Smeaton family has been manufacturing beds for over 125 years. The tradition of bed making was first started by Henry Smeaton, who made palliasse mattresses filled with straw under the arches of a bridge in Masboro, Rotherham. Every week on market day, he took them on a horse and cart to Retford Market to sell to farmers who brought their animals and produce in to sell. Luckily the horse knew the way back, as Henry had a tendency to visit several hostelries and drink the proceeds on his way home. Hence he had to start all over again the following week. This family tradition of bed making was passed down to his son, Arthur, and his grandsons, Henry Smeaton, known as Harry, 18th January 2019 | 66
the youngest of three brothers, Harold and Leonard being his elder siblings. Arthur Smeaton served with two brothers, Ernest and George, in the First World War at Ypres and miraculously they all returned unscathed. Coincidently, to this day, Healthbeds sources some of its woven damask fabrics and tickings, which adorn our mattresses and divan sets, from that area of Belgium.
When the Second World War was declared, Harry received his call-up papers in 1942 and left his wife, Frieda, who ran Cullumbines, her family’s fish and chip shop, and his fiveyear-old son, Tony, and joined the RAF as a carpenter/fitter, working as ground crew on the wooden-framed Mosquito fighter bombers. When he returned to England in 1946, after four years in the jungles of Ceylon, India and Burma, he formed a business,

Smeaton Brothers, with his eldest brother, Harold, using his carpentry skills and the family tradition of bed making, in a workshop situated above an undertakers in Wellgate, Rotherham. Harry and Harold quickly realised that the business wasn’t sufficient to support two families and an agreement was reached, with Harry continuing with the bed making business. In 1968, Harry was able to buy a new factory in King Street, Rotherham, which the council assured him would be a designated industrial area. After only six years it was subject to a compulsory purchase order as the council wanted to build a new housing estate, so in 1974 Harry bought some land in Masboro, Rotherham, and built a new factory on Sarah Street, ironically coming full circle back to the
Masboro area where his great grandfather, Henry, first started the Smeaton family bed making tradition. In 2006, the company, now known as Healthbeds, was awarded the original “Which?” Best Buy and Best On Test for its memory foam and pocket memory mattresses, and with this help, built the current purpose-built bedding factory at Thurcroft, Rotherham. In recent years, Tony Smeaton, chairman, and David Smeaton, managing director, have been joined by Toby and Lucy Smeaton in the family business, adding a sixth generation to the company history, helping to keep the bed making tradition alive.

John Tuton, Mammoth founder and managing director, unveils product launches, partnerships and more pressure relief than ever as the business looks forward to a transformative year.
MAMMOTH
Transformation
2019 is barely under way and yet things are already moving fast for Mammoth. The challenger brand has so far built its name on strong healthcare credentials and a commitment to innovation, creating premium product ranges that do more for the health and wellbeing of consumers. But 2019 promises to be the year that Mammoth’s unique Medical Grade™ Foam and PostureCell® technologies become available to all. Mammoth’s founder and managing director, John Tuton, says: “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved at Mammoth in recent years. We have developed a brand that not only sits at the cutting edge of the 18th January 2019 | 70
mattress market but one that has become the brand of choice for the elite — as is proven by our affiliations with professional athletes across football, rugby, cricket and Olympic sports.
A simplified product architecture and clear messaging serve to give consumers not only great choice, but a better understanding of how specific products are tailored to meet their own preferences and needs.
“Yet Mammoth wasn’t founded on the idea of delivering great comfort and support to the few; it was always our intention to make Medical Grade™ Foam, which was once limited only to hospital beds, accessible to as many people as possible. And that is why I am so excited about what 2019 holds.”
With pricing now beginning at £499 for a double mattress (delivered boxed and vacuum packed), the RISE collection is the perfect place to start for those who understand the importance of sleep and want to improve their wellbeing, but may not previously have been in a position to invest in leading sleep and comfort technologies.
This winter has already seen the roll-out of a stylish new look to its core range, with the arrival of the RISE and SHINE collections.
Further up the market, Mammoth has also proudly launched the Shine collection. This

exclusive offering is targeted at those who want more of Mammoth’s much-loved sleep technologies. With increased depth and an even greater number of support zones, this is a mattress collection without compromise.
aQO Mammoth’s exciting plans for 2019 aren’t limited to sleep, however. The January Furniture Show will witness the grand unveiling of a new partnership between Mammoth and Celebrity Furniture, bringing the supportive and pressurerelieving qualities of Mammoth’s unique Medical Grade™ Foam to four bestselling Rise and Recline styles as standard.
Celebrity Westbury Rise and Recline Chair
Alongside these two new product collections, Mammoth has also successfully partnered with Bensons for Beds on the bhealthy range. This collection of three mattresses is aimed firmly at consumers looking to improve their lifestyles and bring about positive change through sleep. John says: “We have always shared many of the same values as the team at Bensons. Both businesses have a keen focus on health and comfort, and believe passionately in making a real difference to those who buy our products. That’s why when the opportunity to partner on bhealthy presented itself, we jumped at the chance to create something that is utterly consumer focused.”
John continues: “Celebrity’s pedigree in motion furniture is unquestionable. And we are thrilled to feature Mammoth cushions in their products to create chairs and sofas that are comfortable, cool and packed with scientifically tested technologies. “At Mammoth, we have always been passionate about helping people to improve the way they lie, sit or lounge — regardless of age, health or fitness levels. As a component in four of Celebrity’s bestselling styles, we have taken an important step towards that dream of providing 24/7 comfort.” Celebrity CEO, Wayne Hollis adds: “You need only look at the partnerships Mammoth has forged with the likes of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy to appreciate that they leave no stone unturned in their quest to make a difference in people’s lives. This dovetails with our own commitment to excellence and the reputation we have built over more than 30 years in business. We are excited about the potential of this partnership and look forward to a successful launch at the Furniture Show this January.”
Rise
For most brands the idea of launching multiple new collections and expanding into an entirely new market would be more than enough to squeeze into a single 12-month period. Yet John Tuton promises that there is still more to come in this transformative year for Mammoth as a business. “2018 was the year in which we prepared the business for that next growth phase. And now that 2019 is here I can’t wait to see how the fruits of that labour will be received over the coming months,” he said.

THE FUTURE Slumberdream directors share an update on its latest developments and its preparations for the year ahead.
It can sometimes be difficult for manufacturers to cope with an increase in demand, which can put limits on potential business growth and profit margins. With years of experience, having followed their father into the bed industry, both Sharez and Shamrez Hussain, directors of Slumberdream, know that growth needs to be planned for and managed carefully in order to achieve expansion, whilst at the same time delivering the quality and innovation that customers come to expect. Slumberdream has come a long way since it launched in 1990. It operates from Âť 18th January 2019 | 72

premises totalling an impressive 120,000 sq. ft. and boasts more than 75 products within its various ranges. Its customer base is growing, too. During the past few years business has steadily grown, which is reflective of its continuous investment in premises and facilities. But the team has not become complacent. Slumberdream’s product ranges have been segmented into separate brands to offer a clear identity to its respective target markets. As well as this, investments have been made to develop new ranges, expand the fleet, improve its online presence and gain more market exposure. Slumberdream’s upper-market mattress brands include Sleepking, Healththerapy and Aeroflex. “The brands focus on quality and appeal to a higher-end consumer,” Sharez and Shamrez told Cabinet Maker. “The Sleepking range features hand-stitched pocket sprung mattresses, which are combined in a different layers of fillings. Healththerapy focuses on the use of laygel for added comfort and again these products are encapsulated foam. “We also have a range of high-quality ottoman bases, which have front-opening or side opening options and come in a choice of colourways. These bases can be used in combination with our mattress ranges to create a customer’s ideal bed, satisfying their 18th January 2019 | 74
requirements for storage, comfort and visual appeal.” The firm recently invested to improve its website, showcasing Slumberdream’s contract beds and mattresses. The firm carries out contract manufacturing work for businesses throughout the UK, including hotels, hostels and universities. Visitors to the website will also be able to browse the manufacturer’s new Aeroflex products. Aeroflex comprises a range of vacuum-packed mattresses, which offer retailers convenience through ease of storage and transportation, plus an excellent price point. Other investments in recent years include the introduction of lean manufacturing technics to further enhance its customer ordering system. This will help Slumberdream to capitalise on growth and to give greater convenience to retailers. The firm has also purchased six additional delivery vehicles, including 7.5 tonne, 15 tonne and trailers. These liveried vehicles demonstrate the pride that Slumberdream has in its products with the company also benefiting from an established sales team, as Sharez and Shamrez explained: “Our agents keep in regular contact with retailers, offering support and advice regarding orders and products. They visit retailers with the show van, displaying our products first-hand, and are be able to meet with our retailers throughout the UK, representing the full range of Slumberdream brands.”
Looking ahead, the business aims to build growth through the implementation of its developed point of sale materials for its bed ranges. The duo concluded: “These materials are available to both our new and existing customers, to help them maximise sales and display our products in the most appealing manner possible.”

Fasten
Heico Fasteners has been providing the UK upholstery industry with the highest quality upholstery supplies for nearly 30 years and 2019 promises exciting new products, exhibitions and competitions from the Essex-based company. Until 2009 the company was known as Fisco Fasteners, a name synonymous with decorative upholstery and furniture nails within the industry. After the company’s takeover by the Heico Group, the name Heico Fasteners UK was adopted and the company has since continued to grow from strength to strength with an ever expanding range of products. With a product portfolio that also includes seat webbing, furniture springs, tack strip, brass castors, wooden sofa legs, staples, nail strip and so much more, the January Furniture Show at the NEC is always a great showcase for what the company has to offer. New product launches are an integral part of the exhibition experience and Heico will be displaying several new product lines at the show. As Dave Read, general manager of Heico Fasteners UK makes clear, new product development is key to the company’s continued success. “We are constantly working with our customers to better understand what they want and work closely 18th January 2019 | 76
with our suppliers to provide an extensive range of products to the industry,” he said. “The January Furniture Show is the ideal platform to showcase our ever expanding range and this year we will be launching a new range of metal furniture legs that perfectly complement our existing range of wooden sofa legs and feet, which already includes our unique ‘Artisan’ hand-painted range. In addition, we will have our new line of swivel chair bases and plastic sofa legs as well as new additions to our upholstery thread range that will now offer nylon, polyester, poly poly and poly cotton threads in a range of colours.” The company’s dedication to maintaining the highest quality, both of its products and also customer service, has always been at the heart of its philosophy, as Dave says “We have been working closely with the upholstery and wider furniture industry for many years now and our experience tells us that the industry is very demanding in terms of what it expects from its suppliers and our aim is to meet and indeed exceed these expectations every time.”
So what does Dave think about the current climate within the industry and the future outlook? “There is no doubt that the current situation with Brexit is having an effect on the market. We are working at a time of great uncertainty, which is affecting the retail sector as a whole and this of course filters down to demand on the supply side.” Obviously the effect on exchange rates also has an effect on margins and in such a price-conscious industry this creates further demands on a company such as ours.” But Dave is far from all doom and gloom. “Regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, if some sort of deal can be agreed that provides some certainty hopefully this will stimulate the economy,” he added. The company has always sold its products direct to manufacturers and the wholesale trade, but was quick to appreciate the importance of using an online presence to extend its reach into the wider market. As Stuart explains, the competition sees co-operation between a number of industry stakeholders.
“We have always relied on working closely with our customers, both via our network of sales representatives on the road and our internal sales staff,” he said. “Creating an online shop allowed us to reach out wider into the upholstery and furniture market by targeting the re-upholstery trade of individual upholsters or small independent companies, interior designers and also the general public, who are just looking to complete a simple repair job or who enjoy upholstery as a hobby.
“The competition is run in close
“When we created www. heico-direct.co.uk our aim was to supply our products in smaller quantities to a part of the industry that we had historically not had direct contact with and there is no doubt that our constantly increasing range of products, which are available in pack sizes ideal for small specific jobs, has been a great success.” Heico’s commitment to the upholstery industry saw it develop the annual Heico Upholstery Design Competition that challenges design-inspired upholstery students undertaking the three-year Association of Master Upholsters & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF) course to create a scaled down chair design that incorporates the company’s decorative upholstery nails, sofa legs and brass castors. The winning designs are announced at an awards ceremony on the company’s stand at the January Furniture Show and the chairs take pride of place on the stand for the full duration of the show.

association with both the individual training centres and the AMUSF, and in recent years we have teamed up with the British Furniture Manufacturers Association (BFM) to create the BFM Joan Milton Award, which is awarded to the design that is judged to have the most potential to go into serial production,” he added. “The competition is great fun to be involved with and the support of all the training centres, AMUSF and, more recently, the BFM has helped to make it a great success. It is well worth coming along to the stand to see the winning designs, the unique work that the students create are great examples of the upholsterers art.” So with new products aplenty and unique furniture on display, why not visit Heico Fasteners UK at JFS on stand A30 in Hall 1.

It has also appointed a new HDI quality manager, Andrew Mear, to develop its HDI framework. Kai Schwenke, Wiemann’s export manager, said: “Andrew has settled in to his new role extremely well, including the UK agent team, hubs and customers. “Going forward, Andrew’s future focus is to review our HDI system, procedures and service so we can improve current offers and take a lead in bedroom furniture assembly and customer service — he will be a core part of our business strategy in the UK.” Added Simon: “It’s important to remember that our success is dependent not just on great products but on great service, too. “We never forget that we must make dealing with us as easy and trouble-free as possible. We’ve also been working hard behind the scenes on a new range of boutique bedsteads and are excited to reveal them to the trade this January.” Key to the company’s success has been heavy outward and inward investment for the last two years, covering machinery, facilities and staff development. In its dedicated Roll & Rest division alone, Shire’s latest purchases include state-of-the-art wrapping and rolling machinery ,and foam cutting technology, as well as a glue line to help make its systems
as automated as possible. Shire’s investment in facilities and machinery has helped to ensure that it remains ahead of the game. It has also spent heavily on training staff to ensure full maximisation of its new technology. Said Fara: “Our continued growth in business allows us to invest, to update and expand our product offering in order to reach new markets and audiences.” In recent years, Shire has made significant in-roads to the hospitality and contract markets — 30% of university beds are now supplied by the manufacturer. It has celebrated a recent contract win with
Yorkshire’s largest independent hotel chain, Cedar Court Hotels, supplying its zip and link beds as well as its standard products. Keen to continue growth across a number of sectors, Shire launched a Leeds Rhinos bed, designed with the Christmas gift market in mind. It was officially launched at bed retailer Chiltern Mills in Leeds with a collection of the rugby league club’s players. This year the manufacturer, which is proud of its Yorkshire roots, will continue its work with the county’s sporting elite — Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC), recently launching its second year of partnership. It plans to expand on its Sleep4Sport project to develop an innovative new sleep-enhancing product, based on research into players’ sleep patterns. The family-run business has been supplying the trade since 1997 and today the company’s range of beds, mattresses and divan bases are supplied nationally and internationally to major retailers and the contract sector, including education, care and hospitality. Shire Beds will be located in Hall 5, Stand E80 at JFS.

BAKING
Talalay latex maker
Radium Foam reveals its recipe behind Vita Talalay by comparing it to a pound cake recipe.
DELICIOUSLY COMFORTING VITA TALALAY LATEX CAKE Total time needed: 11 hours • Preparation time: 10 minutes • Baking time: 40 minutes Yield: This is our special recipe for our unique and fully natural Vita Talalay latex. Think of Dunlop latex as a brownie, while Talalay is more comparable to a pound cake. In fact, the similarity is uncanny. Not only does it take many years of experience to master the art of baking the perfect pound cake, but the airflow and fluffiness is very similar. To make things simple, we will explain the baking of Vita Talalay latex as if we were at our kitchen at home. Let’s get to it, shall we?
18th January 2019 | 88
In order to bake our Vita Talalay pound cake, we will need a few pieces of equipment. This makes the Talalay process; we will need a mixer, a cake mold, freezer, oven, a rolling pin and a tap with a rinsing head. Then we need the ingredients, very simple: milk, some honey, baking powder and an egg. What you’ll need
Equipment • Mixer • Cake mold and lid • Freezer • Oven • Tap with rinsing head • Rolling pin Ingredients • 1 cup of milk (natural latex) • 1 large egg (air) • 1/4 cup of honey (soap) • 1 sachet baking powder (additive)
FOR FULL STORIES AND DAILY NEWS UPDATES: WWW.CABINET-MAKER.CO.UK
aQO
How to make it
MIX First, take a large bowl and pour in the milk. It is important that it is fresh and fully natural milk which has been ecologically sourced and filtered for impurities. Add the honey and the baking powder into the bowl and begin mixing. We recommend using a mixer here. Add the egg and mix further until it is whipped into a very airy batter. This will guarantee a fluffy cake!
FILL Now you will need to use the cake mold. It is important that the mold has a rectangular shape with pins to guarantee a consistent baking process. It is the classic shape for the fluffy Vita Talalay latex cake! Fill the airy batter into the mold. Do this slowly as it will allow for additional air to get into the batter - for extra fluffiness!
RISE Put the lid on the mold. Make sure it is fully sealed. This will create a vacuum in the mold, allowing for the batter to rise. The more air is whipped in the batter, the fluffier the cake will be at the end. You can even decide for a light weight or heavy weight cake! Simply put more or less batter in the cake mold. Fill between 30%-60%.
FREEZE After the batter has fully risen, the airy batter will be evenly divided in the mold. Place the cake mold into the freezer. Make sure that your freezer is set to -30°C. Leave the cake to blast-freeze in 8-10 minutes
BAKE Pre-heat your oven to 115°C. Remove the mold from the freezer into the oven. Do it quickly to avoid the batter from collapsing. You will now notice the importance of a good mold that can take a high degree of temperature change. Let the batter bake for 10 minutes . DEMOLD Take the mold out of the oven. The cake is now solid. Carefully, you do not want to tear it, remove the solid batter from the mold.
WASH Now, bring the pound cake to your tap and prepare the rinsing head. Now rinse the cake. Make sure to use clean, fresh water. After the solid batter is visibly wet, take the rolling pin and roll out the water. Repeat this step 4 times. Extra tip: Do not worry about breaking the cake, it is very stable and will jump back to its original shape no matter how hard you put pressure on it with the rolling pin. In fact, put as much pressure as you can to ensure that all of the water is out of the cake before continuing on to the next step!
BAKE-OFF Place the pound cake on to the baking tray. Place it back into the oven. Make sure you have the oven set to 85°C, and leave it there for another 8.5 hours to finish!
TEST AND TASTE Now tap the cake with a spoon. You will see it has a very consistent feel, and you will find it is deliciously soft. What is the best part about this Vita Talalay latex pound cake? It consists only of pure natural ingredients and is the healthy choice when it comes to cakes! FROSTING The best way to enjoy your Vita Talalay cake is to have it frosted to your taste. Every cake needs a good frosting! Where to find a frosted Vita Talalay pound cake? Visit the mattress store!

AIMING Upholstered furniture supplier Mason and Pearl share an insight into their business with Cabinet Maker as it prepares to launch a number of new collections during the January Furniture Show. Mason and Pearl aims to become the leading supplier of modern, design-led upholstery in the UK. The January Furniture Show will provide the ideal platform to showcase the launch of over 15 new collections with an intention to have a choice of product styles and price points to suit varying buying requirements. This year will see the introduction of an entry level range that will form a new online catalogue for internet retailers and a premium design range, featuring a lifetime guarantee, manufactured with expert craftsmanship, exclusive to bricks and mortar retailers. With preparations under way for the January Furniture Show, Mason and Pearl will be exhibiting a bold look that complements its exciting on-trend products. The design team at Mason and Pearl has spent the past year developing a range of models that have all-round commercial 18th January 2019 | 92
appeal. Primary importance is placed on offering a collection that is affordable and accessible to a wide demographic, without sacrificing the element of design and quality. The new models, therefore, feature a choice of fabrics that are soft and durable whilst still providing a clean and contemporary look, including neutral grey linens to more bold velvet colours such as navy blue and plum. The product range targets a growing demographic that is increasingly placing prominence on interior design, choosing furniture with sleek, clean-cut profiles. However, ultimately the element of comfort is of significant importance, hence all products feature comfortable deep seats made of supportive high-grade foam. With the UK population now more confident purchasing big ticket items online and becoming accustomed to receiving products the next day, Mason and Pearl’s ability to deliver from stock enables retailers to fulfil
upholstery orders to the UK and Ireland within two weeks, significantly beating the industry standard six-eight week lead time. This key selling benefit can often be the difference in securing a sale in an increasingly competitive market. It is also aware of the requirement to work closely with the changing needs of retailers, ensuring the provision of services such as high resolution product imagery, detailed descriptions, swatch service, direct home delivery and regular stock updates. Providing retailers with extensive product knowledge at easy access enables them to efficiently manage customer queries, increasing the opportunity for sales conversion. Mason and Pearl has seen a steady growth in accounts since launching its first product range in summer 2017. Building on a positive response from buyers, it has used the platform and feedback to improve the range and will this year see it exhibiting at Âť

the NEC with a stand almost double the size from its first showing in 2018. Over the past year it has developed accounts from a variety of sectors, including national online retailers, interior designers and contract furnishers. The team has also been joined by David Langford, who brings a vast wealth of industry insight and experience. This year the joint focus is on developing accounts with key independent stores to provide a strong High Street presence for the product range. This will be led through the appointment of James Stevenson as national sales manager. James will lead a team of agents across the UK and Ireland, who will present the offer to their key customers. David and James will be working closely going forwards, providing Mason and Pearl with their invaluable knowledge, direction and guidance to achieve ambitious growth plans in the coming years. The long-term strategy for scaling the business is for continued investment in product design, working closely with partner factories in the Far East to encourage more direct container business throughout the UK. In addition, Mason and Pearl will look to expand into key European markets, having already developed initial export business to Germany. In times of economic uncertainty buying habits often tend towards consciousness of price or quality. This is where Mason and Pearl feels confident that it has developed a
Hendrix Plum selection of products that will thrive during these conditions. The new entry level range represents tremendous value for money with many buyers looking for more cost-effective furniture solutions, whilst the premium range of products offers the assurance of an investment piece with its industry leading lifetime guarantee. Mason and Pearl has been able to withstand currency fluctuation and hold prices for over 18 months since its initial launch and will strive to continue to
ensure its products represent value within the marketplace. This year at the NEC, Mason and Pearl will feature a bold look that underlines the core concepts behind its collection with the intention being to move away from more traditional design often seen in the UK. It is now clear that modern, retro-inspired furniture design is here to stay and has captured a significant proportion of the market share. Customers now desire models that are both aesthetically pleasing and adaptable to all spaces and styles, manufactured with premium quality materials and craftsmanship that has a focus on attention to detail. Mason and Pearl looks forward to welcoming visitors on to its stand at the January Show 2019. Visit Mason and Pearl in Hall 1 on Stand A80.

Now a regular at the January Furniture Show, it will be bringing along its customers’ favourite classic furniture lines that include the Marrakech and Apollo ranges. Both ranges ooze luxury appeal with champagne gold-tinted mirror panels and trims. Along with these and much more, a stop at its stand is the ultimate must.

reasons why...
As La-Z-Boy UK was busy preparing for the 2019 January Furniture Show, we caught up with marketing director Mark Draper to talk about why the show was important for the brand, and to find out the top five reasons why the stand is a must-see this year.
It’s another significant January Furniture Show for La-Z-Boy UK, with new product categories being unveiled as well as a host of upholstery products to be introduced. This will be the third year La-Z-Boy has exhibited since the licence was reacquired by the brand in the USA. Marketing director for the UK and Ireland, Mark Draper, chatted to Cabinet Maker during the run-up to the show and told us his top tips for why visitors should make sure they pay a visit to the brand at the NEC.

1. Expect the unexpected
Our luxury bed and mattress ranges will be on display, featuring upholstered bed frames, available in the full selection of La-Z-Boy upholstery fabrics and leathers, a collection of three pocket sprung mattresses and a luxury boxed mattress, which is already proving a huge success.
This year visitors will see the La-Z-Boy they know and love, but in new product categories as well as the ones we’re world-famous for.
We’re also introducing a brand new collection of dining and occasional furniture. We’ve been planning the collection throughout the

year and we’re delighted with the quality and the aesthetic of the final products. They will give our retailers the opportunity to upsell upholstery purchases and offer their customers a wider selection of branded furniture for their homes. Cabinet is already a significant category for La-Z-Boy worldwide, so it’s a very exciting time for us to be introducing these products for our UK and Irish customers. We’re »

confident that they will be very well received at the January Show. 2. The best seats in the house La-Z-Boy is, of course, best known as being the world’s best-selling recliner brand, and that is still very much our key focus and will remain so. At this year’s January Furniture Show we’ll be introducing a host of new upholstery models in our much-loved Comfort Studio Collection, and our contemporary Urban Attitudes collection. We have selected all the pieces carefully to offer something for every taste. Consumers will be spoilt for choice, and retailers will have a wide range of options to target to their key demographics — all of which will look spectacular in the showroom. We’ll be displaying classic on-the-rail models as well as modern, design-led models on legs, which also feature a specially-made concealed recline mechanism to give a clean, attractive look. 3. Time for a catch up The January Furniture Show is one of our highlights of the year, giving us the chance to catch up with customers from all over the UK as well as make new introductions.
Kenley
It’s our opportunity to talk directly with retailers and find out more about their wants and needs, and get feedback about how their customers view our products and the point-of-sale materials. We’ll be welcoming visitors with fresh coffee and tea and are looking forward to having a chat, giving people a tour of what’s new and answering everyone’s questions.
4. Keeping on-trend We aim to keep a step ahead in terms of design, technology and style trends. We’ll be unveiling our latest looks for the living room, bedroom, dining room and occasional pieces for throughout the home. January is the perfect time to browse looks for the year ahead. It gives retailers the chance to update their showrooms and instore décor where necessary in anticipation of the products they order at the show — which is another reason why the January Furniture Show is one of our key dates of the year. Our occasional pieces make fantastic additions to showrooms as they can be used to accessorise and enhance upholstery roomsets, giving stores a warm, homely feel and allowing for easy upselling opportunities for sales staff. 5. Marketing support We wholeheartedly value the ongoing support of our retailers and we do our best to give sales and marketing assistance to help them gain the most from stocking La-ZBoy products. In 2017, we introduced branded in-store point-of-sale display material for retailers who signed up to become a La-Z-Boy Furniture Gallery. It includes a TV with a looped video highlighting our brand history, USPs and product features. We’re constantly updating this and the latest version features stylish overviews of our three main upholstery product collections. Visitors can view and find out more about our complementary POS at the show and our team will be on hand to discuss our consumer marketing and advertising plans for the year ahead — including the refresh of our Connoisseurs of Comfort continuous digital display ad campaign. Visitors to JFS can find La-Z-Boy in Hall 5, stand E32.

ESSENTIAL
Simon Ainge, sales director at Kettle Interiors, reveals all behind its new launches taking place during the January Furniture Show. With Kettle Interiors set for its largest ever appearance at the January Furniture Show, including the introduction of a new brand of exceptional value furniture, the supplier is more ready than ever to provide retailers with furniture that responds to increasing market pressures. Famed for oak and painted dining and bedroom collections that deliver impressive quality and excellent value, Kettle Interiors furniture has long been an established presence in bricks and mortar retail stores across the country. Now, with retailers keen to drive footfall to store through discounted lines and the growing rise of internet retailing, the new Essentials by Kettle Interiors brand introduces well-designed, functional collections with full flexibility over pricing. 18th January 2019 | 110
BRAND
Simon Ainge, sales director, Kettle Interiors explains: “There is no doubt that Kettle Interiors collections enjoy a status for offering quality at a price few can match, but with retailers looking to drive footfall to store through discounts and sales, we saw there was room to deliver ranges that could help them to fulfil the promise of low prices allyear round. “So, we are using this year’s JFS to launch an exciting new brand, Essentials by Kettle Interiors, which will offer well-designed collections, engineered to provide exceptional value. Aggressively priced and perfect for special offer promotions, Essentials by Kettle Interiors gives you full flexibility over pricing.”
Whether as headline furniture for everyday great-value, or a range priced to sell for sales and discount periods, collections within Essentials by Kettle Interiors take the styles loved by customers with constructions and proportions best for fast and easy sales. With many item sizes suitable for one-man courier delivery, Essentials by Kettle Interiors also makes delivery simpler and more costeffective, making it a great choice for internet retailers. Launching with five bedroom and three dining collections, all offering a full array of pieces, Essentials by Kettle Interiors is supported by the supplier’s highly-regarded service offer: “Alongside the quality made famous through our Kettle Interiors collection, we’ve become

known for our benchmark service model and we see no reason not to uphold this for Essentials,” reveals Simon Ainge. “All Essentials by Kettle Interiors collections will be readily available from UK stock, giving retailers the assurance they need to provide fast delivery and great customer-service, while making the aggressive pricing even more tempting. “Whether opting for wholesale with free delivery from £250, our stockist programme with a monthly minimum order of £2,500, or the bulk discounting of our container service; we are determined to prove that low prices don’t have to mean compromising on service.” Upholding this belief, Essentials by Kettle Interiors products can be ordered online for fast delivery across the UK. For retailers keen to maximise value yet further through container orders, the no deposit option will be delivered in as little as six weeks. The Mirror Collection will see eight new designs launched, while the Chair Collection will be boosted with three new designs. Simon continues: “We firmly believe that Essentials by Kettle Interiors will give traditional retailers the confidence to make bold moves towards a new audience of consumers that demand low prices and products ready to go. With painted and oak styles that offer classic and modern styles, there’s choice for every home and through pieces well-proportioned for modern room sizes, it could be an excellent opportunity to break into the starter home and new-build market.”
Essentials by Kettle Interiors RAO Bedroom Such is the size and importance of the Essentials by Kettle Interiors launch that Kettle Interiors has committed to another large stand at this year’s JFS. Enabling it to display the full collection of ranges, readily available to order at the show, the stand is in opposite the main Kettle Interiors stand in Hall 4. On the main Kettle Interiors stand, visitors to this year’s show will also be able to find the latest introductions to the existing product portfolio, including the new inspirational MN Collection in bedroom and dining. Displays of all collections, including the highly popular classic country style of TT and the elegant Danish-influenced NT Collection, are certain to underline the quality and value benefits of furniture from Kettle Interiors.
“We’re hugely excited about this year’s show,” says Simon Ainge. “Not only will Essentials by Kettle Interiors really shake-up the halls of the NEC with its low pricing with full flexibility and fast delivery straight from UK stocks, we’ll also use the show to further cement our position as a reliable supplier, offering exceptional value and service at a range of price-points for home and interior retailers right across the UK.” Find Kettle Interiors at this year’s January Furniture Show in Hall 4 Stand D20 and Essentials by Kettle Interiors in Hall 4 Stand C24.

NEW Age
Saeed Mohmed, managing director at Heritage Furniture, speaks to Cabinet Maker on the launch of its two new ranges during the January Furniture Show.
Last time Cabinet Maker caught up with Heritage Furniture, the business was busy preparing for the highly-anticipated January Furniture Show. Now that the event is upon us, Heritage has revealed the launch of its two new collections, the ‘Sunbury Painted Living and Dining’ range and the ‘Alba Rough Sawn Oak Living and Dining’ range. The past 12 months have been a year to remember for family-run Heritage Furniture as it continues to put its own design on the industry, as Saeed Mohmed, managing director, explained: “We have a dedicated design team who continually work throughout the year. A lot of time and effort goes into market research and identifying trending ranges, coming up with prototypes that we think would resonate with the market. This is an ongoing process.” The result for 2019 is the aforementioned ranges that sit well on trend for the year ahead. Starting with Sunbury, the new collection features an increase in painted options as well as a surface that displays a ‘beautiful geometric pattern’, with geometric patterns set to be a popular design trend of 2019.
Skien Coffee Sideboard
Focusing on the details, Saeed said: “The
range features solid oak parquet tops, groove detailing on the doors and drawers, beautifully-turned legs on the side tables and console table, cup handles on the drawers, and silver-coloured door knobs. “It’s a unique design that gives retailers something different and forms an ideal featured piece to attract customers on the shop floor. It’s painted in grey to suit all decors so it can work well with numerous room settings.” Moving on to the Alba Rough Sawn Oak Living and Dining range, Saeed said that the rough-sawn look has been a popular trend for high-end consumers. “We wanted to bring something that is more accessible, with a focus to create something practical for modern living whilst retaining a traditional rustic charm,” Saeed added, continuing: “This range exuberates a strong, firm and solid look with thick planks and sturdy square legs, and can work to create a country/farmhouse feel or a modern retro look that inclines towards the industrial.” Both designs are expected to perform well during the show with JFS a key event in the industry calendar. F E A T U R E |H E R I T A G E F U R N I T U R E view that the January Furniture Show is the most important show of them all and, for Heritage, JFS serves as much more than just a space to display products. “JFS is the leading event of the furniture industry where all the key players and retailers attend,” said Saeed, continuing: “It coincides with the key buying times and gives us the best opportunity to launch new products as already highlighted. I think having a presence is important for our brand to show how much we have grown since we first exhibited four years ago. This year, in particular, will really illustrate how far we have come.” Not only has Heritage continued to develop its product offer, the business has also committed to several new internal investments that will be a ‘massive game changer’. The company has invested in a new ERP system, and Saeed unveiled the benefits it will bring: “The ERP system will change the way retailers interact with Heritage and how we service them. It gives more control to the retailer with all the information to hand on orders, delivery updates, stock quantities and marketing support. “The focus is to make it easier for our customers, whilst having visibility at all times throughout the whole process. Customers will feel reassured knowing exactly what is happening with their orders.” Heritage has also launched a new programme that competes with outside-the UK-containers in an attempt to further support retailers accustomed to buying large containers from the Far East, which — as Saeed points out — can be a painful process that can include a variety of potential problems. “We have decided to remove all the pain and offer our partners those same Far East prices directly from us,” said Saeed, continuing: “Our
100,000sq ft warehouse ensures we have the stock quantities required to cater for large volume orders. It just makes sense. If there are suppliers that can offer the exact same value, if not more, from the UK then why go through the hassle of ordering from abroad. Not only is this a more environmentallyfriendly option — fewer companies ordering from abroad will reduce the carbon footprint — but it supports the local economy as well.” One of the triggers that led to this initiative is Brexit and all the challenges that come with it, as well as the constant threat of confidence in the marketplace. Saeed explained: “The number of bricks and mortar retailers will continue to decline if they don’t react to the changing retail landscape. That is why we have introduced our partner programme to remove risk and provide support to retailers, focusing on creating in-demand products that are unique. We constantly review pricing and propositions to ensure retailers can enjoy high margins even during these turbulent times.” Heritage has not let challenging conditions halt any progress and has even been recently approved as a Minerva supplier, providing more confidence within its own heritage. Saeed is first to admit that there is still plenty of work to do to maintain the brand’s growth and has plans to boost its profile during the year ahead. “We are focusing on providing more value through partnerships. There is still a lot more work we need to do to get our brand out there in the market and demonstrate our value. We will be increasing our marketing efforts and continue to create innovative propositions that will help retailers to have a successful 2019.” And where best to start the year? No other place than the January Furniture Show, which brings the attention back to the products on display at JFS. Heritage also confirmed that it
Sedona is showcasing its best-selling ranges of 2018. These include the Scandinavian-inspired Skien Living and Dining collection that has been a ‘tremendous hit with retailers’, as well as its Colmar living, dining and bedroom collection, and a number of bedroom collections in various colours, including the Corbett and Sedona range. And what’s more, Heritage also has some enticing offers to take note of when visiting its stand during the show. Saeed revealed: “We have a number of offers running for the duration of the show, which include bedroom packages, table and dining sets. We have a particularly attractive one for the new ranges, which will blow people away, but you have to come to see us in Hall 5, Stand C55 to find out!”

The
Key to
Success James Hudson, sales and business development director at Gallery Direct, talks about the company’s exciting new products on display during the January Furniture Show. Keeping its catalogue fresh and broadening its offering by regularly adding exciting new lines to its collection has been one of the keys to Gallery Direct’s success. Experienced business development directors, James Hudson, Jayne Zalega and Mat Penney, each have their own area of expertise, which has enabled Gallery to design and develop affordable, design-led quality products across their categories, expanding the range and pushing the company forwards. With James’ knowledge and experience of the furniture industry, Gallery has developed an exciting and varied range of living, dining and bedroom furniture, whilst Jayne specialises in textiles, and has introduced and expanded Gallery’s collection, which now includes cushions, throws, bedding, relaxed seating, doorstops and rugs. Mat’s skills and expertise lie in product design, mirrors and home décor, an area of the business that has continually expanded over the years. Combine all this with the knowledge and experience of their colleagues at the Wiltshire bed and 18th January 2019 | 120

And to make life easier for its customers, Gallery’s design studio has produced a range of six product directories: Furniture; Home Accessories; Lighting; Made to Order (Mattresses, Divans, Sofa Beds and Upholstery); Soft Furnishings; and Wall Décor. These show all the new products alongside the current catalogue. James Hudson, sales and business development director, told us: “As always, we’ve worked incredibly hard developing our new collection, to ensure we bring fresh, exciting products to the market, that are not only stylish, design-led pieces, but that also offer quality at outstanding value for money prices. And the set of directories showcase all our products beautifully, underlining our product depth and helping customers understand and focus on our offer, as they can easily see the full range in each category.” On the furniture side, the new collection includes two new ranges that combine the style of today with a mid-century look. Both offer a range of living, dining and occasional furniture pieces. Madrid is carefully crafted from European oak, whilst Barcelona features white marble teamed with acacia wood. Barcelona was entered for the Furniture Awards 2019, and has been selected as a finalist. Judging and announcement of the winners will take place at the January Furniture Show. Other new ranges include Tate, with a unique geometric design featuring gold leaf, and Tuscany, with textured front feature panels that give a more rustic feel. There are also range extensions to some of their current collections, such as Wycombe, which sees the introduction of a stunning black finish, and Pippard. Following the success of its luxury Britishmade Hudson Living sofa beds, which were Lloyd Armchair
Tate Console Table launched at the Bed Show in September, Gallery’s SS19 Collection includes sofa versions, chairs, corner units and footstools. These will all be available to order in the same range of 36 fabrics, so they can be used with the sofa beds for a co-ordinated look or as stand-alone living room upholstery. James continued: “The feedback and orders we received for our Hudson Living sofa beds was incredibly positive, with many customers enquiring about co-ordinating British-made upholstery, and so we have developed this new range for them. Along with the sofas and chairs that match our sofa beds, we have introduced a selection of armchairs, to complement the other pieces, as well as a new range, Howard. There is also a new British-made occasional sleeper sofa bed to introduce a more budget model to the catalogue in response to customers’ needs. All will be made by our team of highly-skilled craftsmen at our Wiltshire manufacturing unit.” The new soft furnishings include a stunning selection of products from Gallery’s latest textiles brand Lagom. Featuring bright contrasting colours in a variety of geometric patterns, with added embellishments including embroidery and end tassels, the new cushions and throws are designed to add a pop of colour to interiors. And last, but not least, there is a new range of wall décor and mirrors, from the striking yet simple style of the Hayle Octagon to the statement Broadheath, with its panelled design that will create a focal point in any interior. A selection of the SS19 Collection was on show at Top Drawer, where it was well received. If you missed it, visit Gallery Direct on its largest-ever statement double decker stand 3-L20 at the January Furniture Show, where you will be able to see the full range, or on stand 8D12-E11 at the Spring Fair.

Following a very successful September Bed Show, Millbrook Beds is highlighting what to expect to see during the January Furniture Show. Adding to the accolade, Millbrook said that show itself was a successful event with an order book increasing by almost 350% compared to last year’s show. Mimi Cesar will put on a show

launch and there will be a good display of new fabrics during JFS.
Some might say that being able to deliver this strategy for 25 consecutive years is a Christmas miracle, but in fact, it’s all in day’s hard work for the company.
“The recent shows we have attended in the run up of 2018 included the South West Furniture Show, Autumn Furniture Show and Trade Days Exhibition – all of which were ahead on last year and we saw very positive shop floor placements.
Sherborne’s Chris Walker proudly told Cabinet Maker: “From September through to Christmas, every pre-Christmas delivery was met and that’s now 25 years in a row that we have delivered everything as promised before Christmas. I don’t think anybody else can boast that record!”
And the hard work doesn’t stop there. Constant product innovation, new launches and growing its portfolio of ranges has played a key role in the business’s success during the past year. Chris details some of the highlights: “The Nevada range has continued to grow stronger, which has been helped by the leather launch in the July period last year. It has got stronger and stronger towards the tail end of the year so we have high hopes for that during 2019.
“The Autumn Furniture Show footfall was the strongest it has been for us and helped us pull back some of the turnover we had lost during the extreme weather the industry experienced back in March and again in July. The launch of the new Albany recliner at the Autumn Furniture Show also delivered great success and it has done extremely well right through to Christmas.”
It’s some achievement. One that highlights not only Sherborne Upholstery’s impeccable

Before the big reveal of what Sherborne Upholstery has planned for JFS, it is worth reflecting on its end of year successes as the business achieved another important milestone.

the January Furniture Show seen as the benchmark of how a year might shape up. “JFS is the mark on how your year is going to be. You have to have a good January, leading into February. The product launch there is generally well received and the footfall – especially from the independents – is always very good, Chris said, continuing: “If you can place the right models and the right covers then you will determine what kind of year you’re going to have. So for us, it’s so far, so good!” Walking onto the huge floor space that Sherborne Upholstery will occupy in Hall 5 (Stands 5-D10 and 5-C10) visitors can expect to see one stand completely dedicated to its riser recliners, showcasing the powerful grip on the industry it has within this sector. Although remaining tight-lipped on its official new launches at the show, Chris did reveal some insight to whet the appetite. “We have an exciting new fabric suite in two sizes, alongside an exciting new range of rising recliners which retailers have been asking us to do for some time we feel now is the right time.
“WE WILL BE SHOWING OUR FULL MOUTHWATERING DISPLAY OF RISER RECLINERS. IT IS A DEFINITE MUST ‘SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT’ AS WE HAVE GOT AN ENTIRE STAND DEDICATED TO RISER RECLINERS.”
“These will be launched alongside a new additional optional extra on all riser recliners offering an extra ‘personalised comfort’ »

concept and available again in all our 150 fabrics and 28 leathers, all in 12 working days. “Also at JFS we will be showing our full mouthwatering display of riser recliners. It is a definite must ‘see it to believe it’ as we have an entire stand dedicated to riser recliners to re-emphasise how many fabrics, leathers and features we have across such a wide range of products. It will show every lift and riser recliner we produce which is by far a greater selection than anyone else in the UK.” That’s not all. Chris also revealed that there are some additional changes to its adjustable bed mattresses. “We are offering a new range of sprung mattresses that are specifically designed for adjustable beds. We felt the time was right to bring a more modern mattress to our adjustable beds range.” Sherborne Upholstery has pulled out all the stops to make this January Furniture Show one to remember, which leads into its final big announcement – its return to JFS’s sister event after almost 20 years, the Manchester Furniture Show. “I believe that this year is right for us to return to the Manchester Furniture Show exhibition in July,” Chris confirmed, adding: “We already have a lot designed and ready to launch for later in the year and we don’t want to hold it for January 2020 so we decided the time was right to return to Manchester. 18th January 2019 | 128

of JFS. Chris concluded: “For those wanting to find out more, make sure you come and see us.”
For now, Sherborne’s attention remains committed to the January show and with the new additions expected to be just as popular, the business is certainly rising to the occasion

A YEAR OF MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS FOR SILENTNIGHT GROUP Steve Freeman
Managing Director, Silentnight Group
“I am particularly proud of the progress we have made on pushing the sustainability agenda across the Silentnight Group.” Three years ago we set out our company vision to be the home of the most trusted sleep brands and we have landed a number of key initiatives to deliver against this. Silentnight remains the UK’s most trusted bed brand – according to a recent brand tracking survey, the Silentnight brand is in good health, with high levels of brand awareness and, most importantly, is seen as the most trusted bed brand in the sector. Quality remains our number one priority and our aim is to strive for total quality in everything we do. Over the next 12 months we plan to drive this quality message home in all of our communications. An example being our ingredients declaration and being totally transparent about what goes into our products and setting a new standard for our industry.
“Silentnight showed quite convincingly that sustainability and environmental initiatives now run through the veins of the business” Ben Burbridge, Manufacturing Guild Mark Chairman.
We are delighted that our commitment to sustainability has been recognised by the Furniture Makers’ Company, awarding us the prestigious Sustainability Award for two years running. Our commitment to sustainability has gone to new levels. In August, Silentnight Group was accredited as a Carbon Neutral business. This applied to our entire operation including manufacturing and logistics at both our manufacturing sites. To support this, we are actively engaged in a number of local projects, including tree planting with local schools. The Group is now fully ‘zero to landfill’ on both manufacturing sites, further demonstration of our commitment to sustainability.
Eco Comfort is very much the focus of our new product innovation, with Silentnight’s Eco Comfort Breathe collection (image opposite) leading the way. We are seeing more and more demand for eco friendly products from our customers so this will remain a priority for our business. In addition to quality and innovation, service is a major priority. We are committed to providing the best in class service for all our customers, especially to our valuable trade partners. Providing tailored products and services to the trade is paramount, which is why we are attending The January Furniture Show. We will be showcasing the latest in innovation with a range of new product launches and a pop-up test lab to showcase the commitment to quality manufacturing and market leading innovation. The stand is a must to visit at the show. To conclude, it’s been a very busy year for the Silentnight Group and we value the ongoing support and commitment of our many trade partners. We look forward to sharing with you further exciting initiatives to enable us to build an even stronger trading partnership into the future. Thank You
We are proud of our achievements on sustainability across all parts of our business. The award is recognition for all the great initiatives our colleagues have delivered to position Silentnight as a leading manufacturer on sustainability in the furniture industry. To support our commitment to the plastic waste phenomena, we are now a proud partner of the Marine Conservation Society, who do amazing work to protect our stunning beaches.

High perfo f rmance beds fo f r deeper, fo r r, healthier sleep
At Sealy, we understand that a deeper, healthier night’s sleep is more than just how comfortable your mattress is. That’s why all our beds contain Sealy Smart Fibres. There’s Adaptive® that helps create a microclimate that keeps your body temperature regulated, with a sleep surface containing Tencel® that helps to absorb excess moisture and clever little microcapsules of probiotics called Purotex®.

Dust mites are the biggest cause of asthma and related allergies in the bedroom. Purotex® releases natural, friendly bacteria into the fabric of the mattress, taking up all the available moisture, leaving nothing for dust mites to live on, so they naturally die out. Wake up... The world’s number one bed brand, Sealy UK, has launched the brand new Activsleep collection – an innovative new range aimed at promoting healthy living, through healthy sleep.
Perfect for those who lead a healthy and active lifestyle, the Activsleep range combines the very best fillings with Sealy Smart Fibres to ensure people wake up feeling revitalised and recharged. Innovative combinations of sleep technology have been used across the collection to regulate your temperature and create a healthy sleeping environment with excellent anti-allergy properties. The collection features a number of stand-out ingredients, including: • Purotex microcapsules which release friendly bacteria into the fabric of the mattress to clean up allergens, reduce humidity and create the perfect sleeping environment. • Adaptive technology which uses the body’s energy to regulate temperature – the ideal solution for a healthy and cool sleep.
With eleven models in the range, boasting everything from Geltex to Memory Foam and pocket springs to posturepedic spring systems – the Activsleep collection offers a variety of spring counts and comfort ratings to not only make sure
you get the support that’s right for you but ensure you wake up ready to seize the day. Nanobiotic Technology The new models in the range combine the high-quality fillings that Sealy is known for with new Nanobiotic technology – a high tech coating that transforms body heat into Far Infared Rays and reflects them back into the body. These invisible waves of energy help the body to feel energised and healthy, stimulating blood flow and optimising the thermoregulation of the body, helping to promote quality sleep and recovery.
. and seize the day Geltex A trio of Geltex models, with varying comfort and spring counts, are included in the Activsleep range. Geltex is a unique, gel-infused foam that provides the sleeper with breathability, pressure relief and full body support.
Memory Three mattresses in the collection contain memory foam, and are designed to provide exceptional support whilst keeping you cool throughout the night.
Its open cell structure means that it is more breathable than conventional foams, and is supportive yet soft in texture. It also has the added benefit of preventing overheating during the night. Pocket Memory 2400
Memory foam mattresses benefit from Sealy Smart Fibres; an essential element that regulates body temperature and reduces humidity. In addition to this, memory foam responds instantly to the contours of the body, providing great support, relieving pressure points and improving blood circulation throughout the night.
Geltex Pocket Eurotop 2800
Ortho Posture Firm Support
Ortho The Ortho models in the range have been designed using Sealy’s Zero Deflection or Core Support springs. Ideal for those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface, they nevertheless offer exceptional comfort through edge-to-edge support and the inclusion of twice tempered, stronger springs that provide even weight distribution from the heaviest part of the body. Neil Robinson, Sales and Marketing Director at Sealy said: “More and more people are beginning to view sleep as a crucial factor when it comes to their overall health and wellbeing. This new Activsleep range caters for those who want to wake up restored and ready to seize the day. We recognise that an active lifestyle can mean different things for different people, which is why the collection is so varied in design.”

Raising the bar Sealy beds are handmade in the heart of Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. When you create something in such beautiful surroundings, it’s a constant reminder that you want things to stay that way. INGREDIENTS LIST Sealy UK recently announced the launch of its new ‘ingredients’ list in a move to become more transparent with its products.
“In addition to this, we also aim to review our environmental footprint policy regularly in order to secure continual improvement in environmental performance.”
In a scheme that takes its inspiration from food labelling, the ingredients list comes on the back of the ‘conscious consumer’ trend - individuals who demand quality and ethically produced products. Available to access online, consumers and suppliers alike can educate themselves on the ethical and quality components that go into the production of a product.
This bold move forms part of Sealy’s aim to strengthen its position as an innovator and influencer in the bed market. Already known for its commitment to high quality mattresses and beds, this new pledge demonstrates how the company has set out to raise the bar when it comes to offering premium products to the UK.
Neil Robinson, Sealy’s Sales and Marketing Director said: “It is remarkable and illogical that you get more information about the contents of a bag of crisps, than you do in a mattress that may cost more than £1,000. At a time when consumers are expecting full product disclosure on everything they buy, we felt it was time to be completely transparent about exactly what goes into our mattresses.” “All of our product ‘ingredients’ are of the highest standard and this is something we’re extremely proud of. We’re excited to see how the sector reacts to this new move and we hope it works to drive transparency and innovation across the board, with other like-minded manufacturers following suit. After all, if you have nothing to hide then there should be complete and total product disclosure.”
ZERO TO LANDFILL Sealy UK has also pledged to minimise any adverse environmental effects as a result of its activities with a new ‘zero to landfill’ policy. And when it comes to Sealy’s environmental footprint, the brand continually assesses the environmental impact of its ongoing operations. Through minimising the use of materials, resources and energy, Sealy seeks to reduce wastage to the lowest practical level, whilst also pursuing a ‘zero to landfill’ policy. In fact, products are now being designed in such a way to minimise their environmental effects in production, usage and disposal. Consideration will also be given to the environmental effects of raw material sourcing wherever possible and thus Sealy will use materials and components that are renewable and recyclable.
r
Sealy UK is now Carbon Neutral - for both production and
Carbon
distribution. But what is Carbon Neutrality? Carbon Neutral is a term used to describe the state of an entity (such as a company, service, product or event), where the carbon emissions caused by them have been balanced out by funding an equivalent amount of carbon savings elsewhere in the world. These savings are generated through helping
to fund renewable energy projects and energy efficiency projects, many of which bring additional social and community beneďŹ ts in developing countries as well as reducing greenhouse gases. An increasing number of businesses are becoming carbon neutral. At Sealy, we realise that many customers prefer to buy products and services from environmentally conscious suppliers but we also recognise that being carbon neutral plays a key part of our sustainability and Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy whilst enabling us to do our bit for global climate change.
Becoming part of Sealy’s brand ethos, employee involvement in environmental matters is encouraged at all levels and is being promoted through training, communication and a constant reappraisal of working methods and techniques.

LAST WORD VIC SMITH — OWNER OF VIC SMITH BEDS
“IF WE ALL KEEP OUR NERVE AND BACK BUYING BRITISH, AND SUPPORTING THE BRITISH MANUFACTURER, THIS HAS A KNOCK ON EFFECT OF KEEPING JOBS GOING, AND HELP KEEP OUR ECONOMY AFLOAT.“
It’s that time of year again — just getting over Christmas and the start of the sales, and then we’re going to pick the new ranges at the January Furniture Show in Birmingham NEC. Quite often there will be the same culprits displaying and selling the same goods. However, this year I think it will be very different. Purely and simply because of Brexit, suppliers will be nervous and buyers alike. You have to come up with the wow factor to keep people’s confidence in the UK market. Reassure them that buying British is still a good thing, and hopefully not overpriced in our market. Of course, service is also key. Lead times are crucial. If they are a long lead time, it makes customers think twice, should they place orders? If it’s a fast delivery time, customers tend to say yes straight away. After all, if you buy something, would you want it next week or in ten weeks’ time? It ticks more boxes and opens their wallets and purses more readily. So I hope manufacturers bear this in mind. And whilst some ranges take longer, they may have a shadow range that can be delivered a lot quicker, giving customers a choice. Have it now in this fabric or finish that’s available or wait a couple of weeks longer, giving them a wider choice to pick and choose from. Manufacturers and stores alike must get back to holding stock which, in my opinion, is key. When people are considering a purchase, an impulse buy is paramount to cash flow and success.
and the turbulent unchartered waters of Brexit will settle fairly quickly and become a great revenue stream. If we all keep our nerve and back buying British, and supporting the British manufacturer, that has a knock-on effect of keeping jobs going, and helps keep our economy afloat. After all, a machinist in a UK cabinet factory is more likely to buy a British bed and make that decision quicker if it’s in stock. Please do not confuse this with Nationalism — it’s more a sense of pride and making the best of a situation, and moving forward. Will we be selling goods that aren’t made in the UK? You bet! Variety, choice and value are key. Buying British doesn’t mean right wing. We need to make sure we are offering the customers what they want — supply and demand. Act now, don’t weep later. Have a good show!
