BEACH REPORT
BY CRISSTY SANTANA
We are blessed, not only with beautiful nature, world-class fishing, luxury golf courses, magnificent dinning and infamous nightlife, but Los Cabos and Baja Sur are also known for their beautiful people and beaches. With the heat of the summer upon us, I caught up with some of Cabo’s top models to discover what beaches they most enjoy cooling off at.

The number one thing for me when going to the beach is comfort and ability to have a good time. The beaches of Cabo Pulmo make me feel that and so much more. I go there when I want to escape from my busy life and I interact with the beautiful nature that surrounds me there.

My favorite beach in La Baja is Balandra Beach, about 15 minutes away from down town La Paz. It is an incredible and gorgeous place. The water is turquoise in color and crystal clear, I can see my feet at all times! Not only is Balandra an amazing place to go and relax but I have

atmosphere is so pure. Being a model in Cabo get’s a little crazy sometimes, but going to Los Barriles makes it incredible and well worth it!
There’s a beach on the Pacific side about halfway between Cabo and Todos. I’m not sure if it even has a name. You have to cut down an arroyo and drive for a bit to get to it. It’s always deserted, a perfect place to be alone. For me, this beach is a spiritual sanctuary that will always represent everything that is good about the Baja.

There are many options at Medano Beach. Hang out in busy sections, or relax in quite areas. Also, it’s a great place for a nice run or walk while enjoying the beautiful views.

Pedregal’s Beach is super close to my house –it is such a magical place. I enjoy seeing the Pacific Ocean, the rocks and miniature mountains all around me. It’s secluded too, so I can really enjoy the peace while getting a beautiful tan :)
8 HANNA MILLER Cabo Divas Modeling
Los Cabos has so many beautiful beaches, but by far my favorite is Los Frailes. It’s a beautiful jewel-covered cove, with a white sand beach and mountain views. The perfect time to go is early in the morning to catch the sun rise, before the wind kicks in. Los Frailes is located on the East Cape, 10 minutes south of Cabo Pulmo.
9 CHRISTINE C

My favorite beach in Baja Sur is the beach beside the Sheraton in Cabo Del Sol. Beyond being a quiet beautiful place with incredible sunsets, it has grassy knolls where I can bring my dogs without bothering anyone. There are also gorgeous rocks you can climb and sit on, just above the crashing waves. The sand is soft and clean and its very close to my home. It is a perfect Cabo beach!

green sunscreens You’re fresh of the plane, bags are unpacked and you just grabbed Cabo Social Magazine before heading for the beach or pool. This is good news, for it is likely that you’ll read this article just as you begin to bake in Cabo’s thick summertime rays. If so, stop for a moment, move into some shade and finish reading about these natural sunscreen solutions.
sunscreen DIET Foods high in antioxidants help reduce free–radicals and protect your skin from the sun. Free radicals generated by the sun’s UV rays are the main cause of sun damage–like burns, premature aging, liver spots and certain skin cancers. Over the past decade, an array of studies have suggested that dietary antioxidants can soak up free radicals and significantly reduce your risk of sunburn, precancerous skin growths, and squamous cell carcinoma.
“Stay hydrated, use an umbrella (you will still get tan under one) and reapply your sunscreen every couple of hours.”

The Beer facts
With the weather heating up, nothing cools you down like an ice-cold mexican beer, especially while in Cabo. Written by John Gault Photos by Carlos Rojas
Oldest and most traditional pilsner in México Yes, BBC is now available by bottle.
Bohemia
For real beer lovers, Bohemia (front) is an unabashedly European lager with delightful complexity. There is also a tasty dark “obscura” version (right) that resembles a bock beer. Bohemia Weizen (left) is a little harder to find, but offers a great taste.
* Tecate Sold mostly in cans, Tecate is a good “load up the cooler” beer, and in Mexico, best know, due to its patronage of sporting events and teams.
Baja Brewing Company A trip to Los Cabos is not the same without tasting Cabo’s only micro-brewed beer. BBC offers a variety of brew, each featuring different and distinct flavors. The bar and restaurant of Baja Brewing Company can be found in both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
* 20
First brewed by Austrian immigrants.
Negra Modelo
True premium beer, this fine malty brew is familiar to many, as a staple at many Mexican restaurants in the U.S. Negra Modelo is a dark beer that goes well with spicy and hearty Mexican food and is interesting all on its own—no lime needed.
The signature “skunky” taste of Corona Extra results from its clear, bottle promoting UV exposure to spoil the essential hop oils.
SUMMER 2010 | CABO-SOCIAL.COM
Corona Especial
To me, it’s not too “especial.” Stick with Corona Extra.
Corona EXTRA
In my opinion, the world’s best-selling import beer, Corona, usually tastes better in Mexico, especially on a vacation. A perfect “drink all afternoon” beer, and tastes great alone or with a plate of tacos. Corona is extra refreshing with a lime.
Tecate Light PAcifico
A bit more bitter and hefty than Corona, Montejo, or Sol. Many beer drinkers view Pacifico as the best light lager and it is especially popular here in Baja.
Indio
Decent, subtle, drinkable.
Not a great tasting beer in my personal opinion, but enjoyed by many locals.
Carta Blanca & Estrella
These two similartasting brands used to be quite common. However, Carta Blanca and Estrella seem to be fading into obscurity. Neither is a standout, but perfectly drinkable.
Sol
While Corona wins the marketing wars in the U.S., Sol is a powerful brand in Mexico. Similar to Corona, Sol is simple and drinkable, but still more flavorful than your typical American brew.
Leon
Looks can be deceiving. In my opinion, Leon looks darker and maltier than it really is. Leon is a taste slightly more subtle than negra modelo.
XX Amber
A staple restaurant beer in the U.S., Dos Equis has a more intense flavor than the norm, and is a refreshing change from the sea of lighter beers.
Aboard Cabo’s newest and most luxurious super-catamaran
First brewed by Germanborn Wilhelm Hasse in 1897, originally called “Siglo XX” to commemorate the new 20th century.
Modelo
XX Lager The Rolling Rock of Mexico, in a green bottle with a strangely sweet taste.
Victoria
With only 4% alcohol, Victoria is a popular choice for those who want to drink a beer without getting buzzed or drunk. Refreshingly flavorful and widely available.
Sister beer to Negra Modelo, is touted as a premium beer and the bottled version comes with a neck wrapped in silver foil. Modelo features slightly more body and a heavier finish than Corona, but most people would not be able to distinguish Modelo’s taste from most other Mexican beers in the same category.
Modelo Light
Similar to Tecate Light. Reminds me a little of Coors Light, which I am not a fan of.
Montejo
Modelo ESPECIAL
Superior
To wonderful times in Los Cabos... ¡SALUD!
Named after the Spaniard who conquered Yucatán and left a trail of blood in his wake. Montejo is far less dramatic than its name would suggest, but it is a nice change of pace. Very similar in taste to Montejo and available in big returnable bottles or cans.
Popular here in Cabo and similar to Pacifico in taste and character.

TEQUILA FEAR NOT
Okay, you’re in Mexico now. To blend in, you must first forget everything you “think” you know about tequila. Forget about your college drinking days; forget the frat house lick, suck and shoot. And please, let us forget about the occasional body shots, followed by legendary hangovers. Tequila is fine handcrafted liquor, deeply rooted in the tradition and culture of Mexico. To respect, appreciate and truly enjoy tequila, you must value its history, heritage and the art of producing it.

live outside The BOx In Cabo, change the way you think this summer. Consider living in your home from the outside in. Think of your outdoor patio, veranda, balcony or terrace as your new primary living area. Embrace the summer heat with fans or even misters. Better yet, design your outdoor space with the breeze in mind. Esthetically, there is nothing more impressive than a well-designed outdoor living area in your Los Cabos home, villa or condo. And remeber, if it gets too hot. You can always retreat to your secondary living area – inside.

3 EL PESCADERO Where: On Pacific Ocean, 8 kilometers south of Todos Santos and 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas, at kilometer 64 on Federal Highway 19. Population: 2,500. Climate: Ocean breezes keep the heat at manageable levels in summer. Winters are warm by day and cooler at night. Scene: Village is bordered by mountains of Sierra de la Laguna to the East, and Pacific Ocean to the west. Palm-lined roads and farms co-exist with low-density private residences. Charming cherry tomato and basil fields are plentiful, mostly ending up in U.S. gourmet grocery stores (like Whole Foods). Some of the produce finds its way to local farmer’s markets. Surfing: Two of Baja Sur’s famous breaks here; Los Cerritos and San Pedrito both feature right breaks. Los Cerritos is great for beginners and intermediate surfers. San Pedrito is a more advanced break, with a rocky bottom and strong currents. Drink: Art & Beer (at kilometer 69 on Highway 19) makes a killer Clamato and is a wonderful place to catch the sunset. Cerritos Beach Club (down the dirt road at kilometer 65) is located at Los Cerritos Beach –a delightful place to surf, swim, relax, eat and drink. 4 HOTEL BUENA VISTA Where: on the East Cape along the Sea of Cortez, 10 minute drive south of Los Barriles and 1 hour drive north of San Jose del Cabo, in the town of Buena Vista (beautiful view). Climate: Average temps March – June, 80° F in day and cool evenings. July – October is hot, even though temperatures rarely surpass 100° F, humidity can make it feel hotter than it actually is. But this is an excellent time for fishing and diving. November – February is windy, so fishing and water activities are not the best. But this is an excellent time for eco-tours. Why: Over 30 years of family run tradition. Many water fountains, beautiful pool, well kept grounds, comfortable rooms, pleasant staff, gorgeous beach, full
restaurant and bar and even its own experienced fishing fleet. Most impressive amenity: Natural hot-spring water supplies entire property, even the hot tub. Water is also amazingly pure, perhaps more pure than many bottled waters and is considered to be therapeutic. Instead of hot water heaters, hotel has cold water coolers to cool down naturally hot water source. Activities: Fishing, hiking, picnic, adventure tours, whale and bird watching, hot springs, Indian rock paintings, fossil-hunting + cultural and scenic tours. 5 CABO PULMO Natural Marine Park Where: On the East Cape, 90-minute drive north of San José del Cabo. Climate: Average daytime temps in summer are 95° F with humidity to match. Winters are far cooler. Why: One of only three living reefs in North America. Home to over 250 different species of fish, nesting and feeding site for a variety of birds, whale sharks, gray whales, as well as Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Black and Leatherback Sea Turtles –some of monstrous proportions. Considered one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems in the entire world. Fame: Jacques Cousteau called it “The Aquarium of the World,” due to the abundance
of coral reefs and fish varieties. John Steinbeck wrote, “The complexity of the life pattern on Pulmo reef is even greater then that of Cabo San Lucas. Clinging to the coral, growing on it, burrowing into it was teeming fauna. One small piece of coral might conceal 30 or 40 species, and the colors of the reef are electric.” Activities: Scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, biking, bird-whale-wildlife watching, windsurfing and kiteboarding. Stay: Rent one or two bedrooms or even an entire home at Baja Bungalows –visit www.bajabungalows.com. More about Cabo Pulmo: www.hautter.com/camera-11 or www. pulmoamigos.org

And the snorkeling is out of this world –you will see parrotfish, jacks, roosterfish, sea lions, manta ray and much more.
