CAC Members’
QUARTERLY 1 At the CAC, we are building an exciting community of artists and audiences, and we want you to make full use of the programs we offer to members. To that end, we are introducing a new development, this member-exclusive newsletter, where every quarter, we will share promotions for members, advance information about upcoming artists, and profiles of people like you— active members and driving forces within the CAC’s community.

In this issue, you will learn inside information about our upcoming performances and visual arts exhibitions from CAC staff—and be introduced to exemplary members of our community, who have showed great dedication to attending CAC events and programs. Personally, I’m excited about our monthly Second Thursdays—our new series of free evening events featuring a different lineup of entertainment, happy hours, food trucks, and art activations. I hope you will join us for one or more performances and to visit our galleries this season and take advantage of all the
benefits that membership at the CAC offers you. Also look for our next issue in December, where we will share an exclusive preview of programs in our spring season. Thanks for being a CAC member, and I look forward to seeing you at our programs and events this year! Neil A. Barclay Director and CEO

Meet Our Staff I serve as the Chief Curator of Visual Arts. My central responsibility at the CAC is to develop, organize, and realize exhibitions of both local and international relevance—which means that at any moment, I am part- discovering new work, part- researching projects underway, part- writing books, part- designing exhibitions, part- shipping art, part-working with other museums to travel our exhibitions, part- planning events to share the work with our members, and part- fundraising to make it all possible. I look forward to any and every opportunity to talk with our members about the work that we are presenting. I was a teacher in a past life, and I still can’t help but see the gallery as an expanded classroom that ignites dialogue and generates more questions. I host regular member tours of our exhibitions. After working on an exhibition for so long (sometimes years), it is often sad for me to see it come down at its close, and this is always the case for our season opener of work by local artists. But if the show must close to make room for another—I couldn’t be more excited to see our Summer exhibition followed by a performance of early works by Trisha Brown Dance Company in the galleries and throughout the building. In 2008, I spent my weekends studying movement in the Trisha Brown studios in New York. It was the same year that the Walker Art Center presented a large and important exhibition of her drawings in their galleries. Trisha’s work poses defining questions about what it means to think across and even against disciplines—a subject at the heart of our work at the CAC today! Andrea Andersson The Helis Foundation Chief Curator of Visual Arts
As the Senior Curator of Performing Arts, I am just hitting my one-year mark here at the CAC. My role is to select artists in dance, theater, and music to perform on our season. Members get a discount on tickets and early seating. I try to meet you at the door and ensure you get in and get the seats you want. We have a very exciting fall season ahead with four incredible artists/companies coming to the CAC. The season launched in September with local theater company Mondo Bizarro’s The Way at Midnight, a look at New Orleans past, present and future through the eyes of seven truly odd characters, performed by just two actors within a magical setting. The Trisha Brown Dance Company will animate our entire building in October—from the galleries, through the theater, to the Warehouse. Trisha, who died in March of this year, was a highly influential figure in contemporary dance and it is a huge honor that the company is performing her work here. In November, we’ll welcome two artists from New York—Kaneza Schaal, whose gorgeously ritualistic theater work, Go Forth, is inspired by the Egyptian Book of the Dead—and the choreographer Sidra Bell who is teaming up with a Swedish band for her world premiere, Mönster Outside. It will be a wild ride from the truly sublime to the somewhat outlandish. I encourage everyone to have fun, take a chance, and be curious! Laurie Uprichard Senior Curator of Performing Arts

Meet Our Members Manon Bellet
in an environment that broadens her own practice and inspires projects that are directly related to the city and its specific geographical and environmental contexts. Manon Bellet, observes rather than controls. The process in the creation of a work is more important to her than its irreversible completion, its shape potentially modified or influenced by the exhibition venue or the visitors.
French Artist born in Vevey, Switzerland, lives in New Orleans since December 2015 Joined CAC in 2016 Favorite CAC moment Soundtrack ’63 live music performance took the audience back in time with a cultural and artistic retrospective of the Civil Rights Movement from 1963 to the Black Lives Matter Movement. MEM BER SHIP RENEW or UPGRADE to the Silver Circle level and receive Manon Bellet’s L’O Perdue
The Contemporary Arts Center’s 2017–18 Silver Circle Artwork, is created by Manon Bellet, exclusively for upper-level CAC Members. The olfactory work L’O Perdue is a limited scent edition made in New Orleans and Switzerland with the collaboration of Andreas Wilhelm Perfumer. Manon Bellet is a French visual artist born in 1979, currently living and working in New Orleans. Over the last 10 years, Bellet has lived between Berlin, DE, and Basel, CH, where she was able to develop her artistic practice and exhibit in many international art institutions, fairs, and galleries in Europe, as well as participate in residency programs in Europe. Bellet has a strong teaching background, giving workshops in various schools and art academies. As an artist with an outside perspective and European background, she finds it stimulating to work
For Bellet, serendipity is the most relevant of all creative processes. In addition, a certain humility informs her choice of materials. Simple and unsophisticated, these materials possess an expressive power that is tapped by the artist in forging her work. Deliberately ‘antiform’, Bellet’s work emerges as much from the environment as it does from the artist herself; it is a field for exploring the mysteries of memory and the vestiges of the present.
