We did it. With the help of our world-class staff and a dedicated group of trustees, we have restored to magnificence our 113-year-old facility at 900 Camp Street with a significant expansion of our programmatic spaces, full activation of the third and fourth floors, and work that has touched every corner of this 100,000 sq. ft. building. While there is still more work to do, these projects have placed the CAC on a firm foundation, from which we can build and grow for decades to come. As a venue for contemporary performance, visual art, and education, the CAC is a unique institution in our region, and, as such, it serves many purposes to many different communities. To an artist, we might represent a venue to realize their aesthetic ambitions and a source of new inspiration. To our patrons, we might be described as a source of new experiences, a place to meet friends and encounter art, or a space in which to find a quiet hour of reflection on a Sunday afternoon. We see great opportunities in our work to advance the livelihood of the artists working among us, while expanding the definition of what role an arts center like ours can serve in the lives of its patrons in the iconic city that is New Orleans. The CAC is not just a place to highlight creative innovation but increasingly it is a gathering place for all of the communities that make New Orleans a unique and world-renowned city. We are a place where our work reflects our greatest aspirations as a community, while animating the challenges we share through robust public programs that clearly illustrate the

transcendent power of the arts to change and enhance quality of life. Our audience building initiatives over the past three years have taken a solid first step down a long road. Our current path seeks to address the systemic inequity in the accessibility and relevance of the arts to people around the world. Today the CAC has one of the most diverse audiences for contemporary arts in all its forms in a city known for it’s deep and multifaceted cultural traditions from throughout the global South. Please join us in the coming months for the exciting programs we have in store for you on the following pages. Sincerely, Neil A. Barclay

Meet Our Staff As the External Affairs Manager here at the CAC, I work on all of the public relations, marketing and advertising strategies to promote all exhibitions, performances, membership and events programmed by the CAC. I work with all departments in the organization to formulate marketing materials, requests and deadlines. In short, I play an integral role in producing and executing all of our forward facing materials and encouraging the public to participate in our contemporary arts programs, exhibits, special events, and most importantly, managing the relationships between our organization and all of its external stakeholders. My role is important to membership because I prepare strategic communications plans that are used to increase membership and enhance the CAC member experience.

By coaching staff members on articulating and facilitating conversations, the External Affairs department promotes membership and troubleshoots the timely resolution of technical issues related to membership. I’m really excited for members to take part in special Curatorial Walkthroughs for our new exhibitions for the spring for Jockum Nordström and Sarah Morris’ exhibitions, which will be on view from March 22–June 17. Walkthroughs with Andrea Andersson, The Helis Foundation Chief Curator of Visual Arts, offer a closer look and in-depth understanding of the themes associated with each body of work. Like us on Facebook: /ContemporaryArtsCenterNewOrleans I have been with the CAC as the Performing Arts Manager since September, but have been working in performing arts production and funding for the better part of the last decade. I’m happy to be back at the CAC since my first go around in 2008 as Special Projects Manager. As Performing Arts Manager, I’m working behind the scenes to implement a robust and diverse season of performance. There’s a lot that goes into it you don’t normally see, from negotiating artist contracts and hiring production staff, coordinating travel, hotels and catering, to working closely with artists to realize their creative visions in our unique performance spaces. Members don’t see me one on one as much, but next time you’re at the center for a performance, look for the bearded guy running back and

forth between the theater and the box office. That’s me, trying to get the show started on time. There’s a lot to look forward to in our Spring Season. In April, do not miss your chance to see Junebug Productions Gomela/to return: The Movement of our Mother Tongue. This work premiered at the Ashe Powerhouse last year, and is easily one of the best works of contemporary multi-layered, multidisciplinary performance I have ever seen. It’ll leave you teary eyed and speechless (that’s a good thing!).

Meet Our Members Favorite or most memorable moment at CAC: The origination story of the CAC as a place of discourse and art practice through the conversation “A Building With A View: Experiements in Anarchitecture” gave me an understanding of the CAC’s role in the arts community then and perspective on its future. Participating on stage with the founders, other artists and curator Andrea Andersson in dialogue was a distinct pleasure.

What are you most looking forward to at the CAC?

First moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University in 1990 Returned to live permanently in New Orleans in 2003 after completing graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art Joined CAC in 2005 Student / Artist / Educator

ON VIEW Marianne Desmarais: samples + patches Until April 1 Theater Hallway Free Gallery Admission

Why/When did you join the CAC? First joined in 2005 after Katrina to support the arts as a substantial part of the city. I remember visiting the CAC in the early days of my college experience here in New Orleans and it has been a center of my cultural map ever since. Its physical and intellectual position in ‘the middle of it all’ locally and within the currents of contemporary art nationally and internationally makes the CAC a reliable barometer. In recent years I have grown more impressed with the breadth of the CAC’s engagement with the community through its showcase of linkages between art and place, most notably in the “A Building With A View”: Experiments in Anarchitecture exhibition and current forums with Paper Monuments. As an artist/member, I participate in the annual SweetArts gala and art auction to contribute to the CAC’s continuity in expanding the role of art in life.

I am looking very much forward to the opening of Sarah Morris: Sawdust and Tinsel in March, for its content and potential synergy with my own work which is currently exhibited at the CAC. Every year I look forward to seeing the work of my contemporaries assembled in the group show that opens each CAC season in the Fall—it is an inspiration to see the work of our local arts community assembled. This year’s theme is especially rooted in issues of place so I wait in happy anticipation to see home through new eyes. Favorite member benefit or perk: As a member, I try to run into the galleries every time I am in the neighborhood whether for an hour or just a few minutes. During district-wide arts events like White Linen Night, we always swing into the CAC for the simultaneous art and happenings; the combination of music events and visual art is always a powerfully affecting and spatial experience for me.
