In the summer issue of Broadsheet: Visual Art Culture, Ian McLean’s review of Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation at the British Museum (23 April – 2 August 2015) considers the various issues raised by the exhibition – notably that of the repatriation of objects and the role/responsibilities of institutions. Reflecting also on the earlier survey exhibition Australia (2013) at London’s Royal Academy, McLean dissects the coverage of the two exhibitions in the British press. A collaborative project between the National Museum of Australia, the British Museum, the Australian National University and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia, Encounters: Revealing Stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Objects from the British Museum is on show at the National Museum from 27 November 2015 to 28 March 2016.
