Following the successful presentation of P A L E S T I N E in the CACSA galleries with Australian and international artists during the Adelaide Festival, CACSA Project #3, MANIFEST 1, presents a major solo exhibition by SA artist and educator, Roy Ananda. This exhibition (to be followed by MANIFEST 2—Sue Kneebone) builds on the CACSA’s ongoing commitment to the professional development of South Australian contemporary visual arts practice, complementing recent highly successful multi-site projects including CACSA CONTEMPORARY 2010: THE NEW NEW, CACSA CONTEMPORARY 2012: NEW SOUTH AUSTRALIAN ART, IBIDEM and major solo presentations over past SALA Festivals of noted SA artists Paul Hoban, Matthew Bradley and Louise Haselton. The MANIFEST series focuses on South Australian artists who have been awarded the prestigious Qantas Foundation Encouragement of Australian Art Award —Roy Ananda 2010 and Sue Kneebone 2011 (Heidi Kenyon was awarded the prize in 2012 and will also feature in this year’s program). The Qantas Foundation Encouragement of Australian Art Award recognises emerging Australian contemporary artists and aims to increase awareness of Australian contemporary art by encouraging promising, emerging artists to produce further work. It is a unique art prize in that it recognises an artist’s body of work rather than awarding artists for individual pieces. The Contemporary Art Centre of SA is proud to be the South Australian host organisation since 2010 for this prestigious award. Roy Ananda says of his work: “The practice of world-building in science fiction, horror and other forms of speculative fiction is a primary driver of my current work. In particular, I take cues from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, whose bleak and bizarre fictional universe continues to be expanded on by contemporary authors, artists, game designers and fans. While my own unabashed fandom looms large in the work, I remain mindful of treating these literary sources less as subject matter and more as a conditioner or organising principle for my preferred sculptural strategies: the spatial manipulation of the drawn or printed image; subtle interventions on found objects; and the use of mutable, modular structures, held just shy of their point of collapse.” Roy Ananda is a South Australian artist working in the fields of drawing, sculpture and installation. He is currently Head of Sculpture at Adelaide Central School of Art. He has been actively exhibiting since 2001 and has held solo exhibitions at Dianne Tanzer Gallery + Projects and West Space (Melbourne), Gippsland Art Gallery (Victoria), 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Sydney), FELTspace, Downtown Art Space, Fontanelle Gallery and the CACSA Project Space (Adelaide). His work has also appeared in significant survey exhibitions including 2004 Primavera, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the Australian Drawing Biennale, Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra. Sandra Uray-Kennett is an emerging South Australian visual artist. Her object-based works have developed from a painting practice originally inspired by the nineteenth century photographic iconography documenting female hysteria. Her current work is an investigation into her personal observations of schizophrenia and its language(s). It attempts to articulate the boundaries and unpredictable territories surrounding this solitary and internal experience. Sandra describes herself as “interested in a world that is inaccessible. By its very nature, this investigation is a confrontation with a relentless and unpredictable barrier... Observing an ambiguity that often appears adrift and anchorless; my approach is speculative in nature.” As such, this body of work can be viewed as an empathic tool which offers an alternate, oblique approach to one aspect of the human experience. Sandra has exhibited at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in Hatched ‘09, Feltspace, Seedling Art Space, SALA Festival, Liverpool Street Gallery, The SASA Gallery and odradekaeaf projectspace 24/7 at the Australian Experimental Art Foundation. Her work has also been included in Handle with care, curated by Adele Sliuzas for ArtsSA, July 2012-December 2013. She has also presented her research and artworks at the 2nd and 4th Global Conferences on Madness at Oxford University in 2009 and 2011. Her 2009 paper ‘Music from another room’ has been consequently published in the book Madness in Con-text: Historical, Poetic and Artistic Narratives (Inter-Disciplinary Press, 2012) Sandra Uray-Kennet will complete her PhD (Visual Arts), University of South Australia, Department of Art, Architecture and Design in May 2013.
