STELLENBOSCH HISTORY
Stellenbosch shortly before the devastating fire in 1710
Stellenbosch holds the honour of being the most well-known town in South Africa. History, culture, natural beauty, sport, education and wine has made the name ‘Stellenbosch’ resonate around the globe as one of South Africa’s premier tourist, wine, business and education attractions. The recorded history of Stellenbosch dates back to 1679 when this name was given to a small island on the Eerste River by Simon van der Stel, the then governor of the Cape. It can, however, be assumed that prior to its official naming, the Stellenbosch surrounds were home to various indigenous communities. The Eerste River, which today still ripples through Stellenbosch, was so named as this happened to be the First (‘Eerste’) river the Dutch settlers came upon after leaving their Cape Town base. After its discovery, Stellenbosch was quickly identified as an area in which to settle, with great potential for agriculture. The surrounding areas proved rich in soil and correct climate for producing vegetables to sustain the ships passing by the Cape of Good Hope en route to the other Dutch colonies in the East. Add to this the thirst of the Dutch and other settlers that necessitated the making of good wine, Stellenbosch soon saw its hills and valleys planted to vines along with other agricultural crops. That skilled vintners were sent to the area and the vines bore wonderful fruit is proven in the fact that, to this day, Stellenbosch remains world-renowned for the quality of its wines, with the vine being by far the
region’s most prominent agricultural feature. The earliest building in the Stellenbosch area dates back to 1689 and can still be viewed on the historic wine farm of Muratie. In the town itself, solid, whiteplastered buildings arose and the streets were planted with oak trees, giving it the name Eikestad (Town of Oaks), which is still used to describe the town today. Besides its rapid growth in becoming a centre for the flourishing wine industry, the foundations for Stellenbosch’s heritage as an educational centre were laid in 1859 when a theological seminary was established. In 1918 a university was founded, and to this day the University of Stellenbosch remains an internationally recognized education centre and one of the leading universities on the African continent. Although Stellenbosch has seen rapid residential and commercial growth over the past few decades, the heart of the town still resonates with an historical atmosphere and cultural allure. The buildings reflect over three centuries of occupation, including Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture. A myriad of museums and places of interest are found along the oak-lined streets. And the crests of the dramatically rising mountains that encircle the town - namely the Stellenbosch, Jonkershoek and Simonsberg mountains - are always visible. Besides its status as a leading cultural, education and leisure destination, it is wine that has made - and continues to make - Stellenbosch famous.
STELLENBOSCH WINE ROUTES
In 1971 Stellenbosch became the first wine region in South Africa to establish a wine route as an organised network of wineries at which the tourist could experience the product of the vine and tune into the soul of the region’s winelands. The Stellenbosch Wine Routes currently provide a co-ordinated network of more than 150 wineries, each offering a unique cellar-door experience for the wine-lover and tourist.
continue to dominate the South African wine scene in terms of quality. With the growing acceptance of South African wines globally, Stellenbosch remains at the forefront of growth in the wine industry. The region’s potential for producing quality wines and as a tourism hub has seen investors from as far a field as France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and America staking their claim in the Stellenbosch winelands.

Accommodation
Staying in Stellenbosch provides you with a base from which to explore the town, winelands and the rest of the Cape Peninsula. You'll find the perfect accommodation and have a wide choice of Luxury Hotels, Guest Houses, Bed & Breakfasts, Cottages, Self Catering, Backpackers, Youth Hostels and even Camping sites. Accommodation establishments can apply to be graded by The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, the legislated and formal body grading accommodation establishments on a one star (fair/good) to five star (exceptional) system. Its not a compulsory requirement and some establishments may choose not to be graded, it doesn’t mean they are lacking in any area. There are many wine farms that offer accommodation on their properties. Some favourites include: De Zalze Lodge, L’Avenir, Jordan, Kunjani, Spier and Zevenwacht to suggest a few. Consult the Quick Index in the back of this guide to view all wine farms that offer accommodation. Stellenbosch town boasts some of the most luxurious accommodation options like Coopmanhuijs, D’Ouwe Werf and Majeka House. Youth travellers are also catered for by local backpacker accommodations like iKhaya and Stumble Inn. Also visit our website for useful links. www. wineroute.co.za

Be Water Wise The Western Cape recently suffered its worst drought since 1904 and continues to be considered a water scares area, with water restrictions. It is recommended that residents limit their water use to less than 100litres per day. Tourists to Stellenbosch are requested to be water wise and save as much water as possible. Here are some tips: 1. Take Note. Read your in-room water wise notices and suggestions on how to save water during your visit. Some accommodation providers have come up with easy ways to save water during your stay. 2. Towels. Using the same towel twice will save water on laundry. Hang your towels on their rails to indicate that you will re-use them (instead of leaving them on the floor or in the bathtub for washing). 3. Running Taps. Don’t let the tap run while brushing teeth or shaving. Only use what is needed. Leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth can waste up to six litres per minute. 4. Quick showers. Can you do it in two minutes? Play the game and count to 120 when showering and you will save buckets full of water. No-one should shower longer than 2 minutes. Ladies, why not close the tap while washing or conditioning your hair, then open tap again to rinse. 5. Mellow the Yellow. Flushing uses up to 15L of water, so if it is yellow, let it mellow. If its brown, flush it down. We thank you for your water saving efforts while visiting our town.

PLAN YOUR DAY
Image courtesy: The House of JC le Roux
We gladly share the following guidelines and tips with you to ensure that your visit will be enjoyable and memorable. These are guidelines only. Each cellar may operate on a different system.
Where to start 1. Consult this guide and make a list of the wineries and activities you wish to experience. 2. Decide which cellar you wish to visit first. 3. You will need at least one hour for each farm you visit. 4. Try to join a cellar tour (normally in the mornings). You will find it most informative, entertaining and interesting. Cellar tours during harvest time give you the opportunity to see how grapes are processed in the cellar. February is peak harvest time. 5. Consult the provided map. 6. Decide where you want to enjoy lunch. We suggest you arrive at your lunch venue between 12:30 and 14:00 as many kitchens close at 15:00. 7. Arrive at your last cellar at least one hour before closing time to ensure you can still taste their wines. 8. Appoint a designated driver or invest in a tour opportunity.
I’m here, what now 1. Some wineries offer free tastings, but some may request a tasting fee. They will provide you with a tasting glass and information on the tasting procedure. 2. Each cellar has a limit to the amount of wine you may taste. Ask the tasting room assistant.
60
3. Taste dry white wines first, proceed to red wines and sample sweeter wines last. Sparkling wines and Méthode Cap Classiques can be tasted and enjoyed between wine types to clean your palate. The tasting order will allow your palate to progress naturally. 4. Do not swallow all wines tasted! Taste and spit out in the spittoons provided. 5. Smoking is not allowed in tasting rooms and some wineries are totally smoke free zones. 6. Some wineries may serve you at tables and others may only serve at the tasting counter. Ask your tasting room assistant.
How to purchase wine 1. Most cellars allow you to buy mixed cases of wine. 2. Wine can be delivered to your door on request. Ask the tasting room assistant for delivery options. 3. Most cellars offer fragile packaging, especially when shipping overseas. 4. Remember, wine is a perfect gift from our region.
Book a tour and relax Book a tour and let the tour guide show you the best in the area. Most tours are very affordable and let you enjoy a relaxed day on the wine route. Tour guides are experienced and have good relations with the wine farms to ensure they tailor make a tour that you’ll remember forever. See our section on Trips & Tours in this booklet.

SAFETY TIPS
As a guest in Stellenbosch, your safety and well-being are of the utmost importance. As in other countries, there are a few universal safety precautions you should keep in mind in South Africa to ensure that your stay is as pleasant and safe as possible.
At The Airport
• Make sure your bags and luggage have locks and name tags. • Watch out for staged mishaps, like someone bumping into you or spilling a drink. This could be a ploy to divert your attention and rob you. • Do not allow people to tamper with your bags. • When seeking directions, proceed to marked information counters only.
At The Hotel / Guesthouse
• Report any suspicious, unattended luggage or parcels to the personnel at reception. • Never leave your luggage unattended unless it is locked away in your room. • Store valuables in a safety deposit box. • Keep your room locked. • If someone knocks, check who it is before opening the door. Contact reception if you have any reason for concern. • Hand your keys in whenever you leave. • Make sure that luggage is only given to the bell staff and a receipt is issued for stored luggage.
On The Street
• Avoid an ostentatious display of expensive jewellery, cameras, mobile phones and other valuables. • Keep your handbag with you and do not leave it unattended. • Keep your mobile phone with you and do not leave it unattended. • Do not carry large sums of money with you. • Exchange your currency at a bank. • Carry your wallet in an inside pocket, never in the rear pocket of your trousers. • Credit card transactions must be processed in your presence. • At night, stay away from dark, isolated areas. • Try to stay and move in groups. • Stick to well -lit, busy streets. • Plan your route beforehand and, as far as possible, do not ask directions from strangers. • Make use of a taxi or uber.
In Your Vehicle
• Plan your route in advance. • Keep the doors locked and wind the windows up at all times. • Do not leave your mobile phone or other valuables where they are visible from outside the vehicle. • Lock valuable items in the boot (trunk) before your departure. • At night, park in well -lit areas. • Never pick up strangers or hitchhikers. • Do not hitchhike.
