Happy new year to all our audiences and welcome to another full season of concerts at Cadogan Hall this spring. As you look through the brochure we hope you will find a lot to look forward to – old favourites and perhaps something new as well. The remaining concerts in this year’s Zurich International Concert Series include a tour through the works of Jean Sibelius with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Mozart with Camerata Salzburg and Hilary Hahn and Russian masterpieces from the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra. We look forward to our first visit from Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra and we’re closing the season with our old friends the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Our atmospheric and intelligent Choral Series has much to offer beginning with the immense talents of composer Eric Whitacre, followed by music old and new from New York Polyphony. For lovers of early music a concert we’re all looking forward to is La Serenissima on 2 February, where this acclaimed period ensemble will be taking us on a tour of ‘Venice by Night’ (read about it on page 10). Equally exciting will be the Tallis Scholars’ recreation of the musical rivalry
involved in the 1520 meeting of Henry VIII and Francis I of France (See page 31). We have a full season of concerts from our residents, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, who will be collaborating with an array of impressive soloists and conductors as well as offering you a light-hearted and romantic way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the music of Burt Bacharach! Contemporary music stars we will be hosting this season include Paul Carrack, Elkie Brooks and Joe Brown as well as a couple of shows that are sure to get you on your feet- the Classic Rock Show and Solid Silver 60s! Finally, if you turn to page 39 of the brochure you will find out that we have a huge treat in store for you all this summerbook now to ensure you don’t miss out on the best seats and to take advantage of some early bird discounts!

Be uplifted by the intertwining sounds of the sitar and the guitar, the piano and the percussion, the bass and the bansuri. Experience harmonious melodies of the voice, conversing with the drums, and listen for the response of the flute as the oboe calls. Taking inspiration from the London Olympics 2012, ICE will join together with composer and producer Niraj Chag, musicians from the Orpheus Centre, a performing arts centre for young disabled adults, and members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to explore the notion of pluralism in the society in which we live through the medium of music. The performance will be accompanied by a photographic exhibition reflecting this theme.

Join Elkie and the band to celebrate yet another fantastic evening of hits and blues, old and new. Elkie’s vocal talent remains undiminished, her voice still able to raise the roof after a staggering 52 years in the business. This special date is also the 35th anniversary of Elkie’s signature song Pearl’s A Singer which was released on February 25th 1977. This promises to be yet another memorable evening with one of the UK’s most loved singers.
Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Overture; Nocturne and Scherzo Mozart: Clarinet Concerto in A major Dvorˇák: Symphony No.8 Dirk Joeres conductor Julian Bliss clarinet Mendelssohn’s charming score to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is as magical as the play itself, with its gleaming sonorities, fairytale delicacy and a dancing, skittish Scherzo. The Clarinet Concerto by Mozart is one of the last works he wrote and one of the finest. Glinka Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major Brahms Symphony No.1 Alessandro Fabrizi conductor Yoon-Hee Kim violin Glinka was one of the most celebrated Russian composers of his time, influencing younger figures such as Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin. Despite winning Glinka’s composition prize, Tchaikovsky’s music was not always appreciated during his lifetime. His ravishing Violin Concerto was criticised at first, yet has since become one of his most popular works. Overwhelmed by the example of Beethoven, Brahms took years to complete his First Symphony – but it was worth the wait. With its noble themes and rhythmic subtleties, Brahms proved himself a master of the genre.

Brahms Academic Festival Overture Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3 Tchaikovsky Symphony No.1, ‘Winter Daydreams’
Wagner Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Brahms Symphony No.4
Grzegorz Nowak conductor Roustem Saitkoulov piano
Orion, 'The Orchestra of Rising Stars', presents a programme of some of the most powerful and lyrical music by three of the greatest German Romantic composers, under the baton of its principal conductor Toby Purser.
For his Academic Festival Overture, Brahms emphasised the festive rather than the scholarly. Written to contrast with the more sober Tragic Overture, the work is full of ebullient high spirits, using student drinking songs as lively inspiration. At the heart of this programme is the glorious Piano Concerto No.3 by Rachmaninov. Like Rachmaninov’s Concerto No.2, this work brims with yearning passion, as well as showcasing the soloist’s dazzling dexterity. Tchaikovsky’s First Symphony rounds off the concert with one of the composer’s most vividly descriptive scores. He called the work ‘Winter Daydreams’, and the music charts a wintry journey through bare landscapes and cold mists, with folk-tunes raising the temperature in the finale.

Yuki Miyagi conductor Kemal Gekic piano Weber’s opera Der Freischütz was a breakthrough in the history of music. Considered by many to be the first German Romantic opera, it influenced composers including Richard Wagner. The work’s Overture contrasts lilting pastoral serenity with moments of drama and suspense. Few can resist Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2, a work which overflows with aching emotion, communicated through a piano part ranging from gentle poignancy to glittering display. Brahms was unsure of his Second Symphony, writing to a friend expressing ‘I don’t know whether I have a pretty symphony.’ Its lyrical beauty however makes it one of his most popular works, with soaring melody, pastoral imagery and a blazing brass fanfare to close. Howard Goodall writes: ‘Although the traditional requiem text calls for ‘eternal peace, rest and light’ for those who have died, it also emphasises judgement and everlasting damnation. I did not feel at ease with this approach to the appalling pain of loss and grief, so in an attempt to provide some solace for the living that mourn, I stripped down the old Latin texts to a few phrases in each movement and laid beside them words from English poems from across the last 500 years.’

The passionate duo, violinist Mayuko Katsumura and conductor Enrico Marconi, join the Philharmonia Orchestra in a programme featuring two gems of the symphonic repertoire. Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No.1 was composed during the post-war years in Soviet Russia (1947-48) but, due to severe censorship at that time, it was not performed until 1955. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is a masterpiece in a league of its own. Premièred on 1st December 1944, the oeuvre is developed in five-movements. The composer named it a ‘Concerto’ (rather than a symphony) to underline the virtuosic way in which every section of the orchestra is treated, alternating their role from ‘soloist’ to ensemble in turn. Premier rock ‘n’ roll legend Joe Brown goes from strength to strength as his contemporary achievements continue to gather momentum.
Glinka Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations Borodin Polovtsian Dances Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2
He has continued to break box office records and recently received MOJO magazine’s coveted Outstanding Contribution To Music Award as well as a much deserved MBE.
Philip Winter conductor Tim Posner cello solo Whitgift and Coloma Choirs
Sibelius Finlandia Poulenc Concerto for Two Pianos Tchaikovsky Symphony No.4 Enrique Bátiz conductor Horus Piano Duo Nóra Emödy & Ahmed Abou-Zahra Finlandia was written by Sibelius not simply as a celebration of Finland but as a sort of extended protest song against Russian rule. It was an instant hit with his fellow countrymen and features the famous hymn tune of the composer’s own creation. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is one of his most powerful works, charting a journey that begins with intense struggle against the caprices of Fate but ends with an electrifying finale in which the battle seems to have been won. Sandwiched between these great works is Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos: a rare treat. A work of sparkling colours and seductive harmonies, Poulenc’s work is a revelation – not to be missed. Rising Stars
Cadogan Hall and The Royal College of Music have collaborated to present Rising Stars. Rising Stars is a series of three concerts showcasing some of the very best RCM soloists and chamber groups. Be the first to hear these talented and award-winning young musicians. Future Dates: Tuesday 29 May, 7.30pm Monday 11 June, 7.30pm
Programme includes: Mouton Nesciens mater, Salva nos Cornysh Ave Maria, Ah Robin, Magnificat Browne Salve regina Fayrfax Agnus dei Peter Phillips director In 1520, in fields near Calais, there took place one of the most spectacular political meetings of all time. Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France met to seal a treaty of friendship between their two warring countries, with no expense spared. The two Chapels Royal were in attendance, and of course, tried to out-sing each other. They were led by two exceptional composers of the period: Jean Mouton on the French side, and William Cornysh on the English. We don’t know exactly what was sung then, but the music would have been the best each country had to offer, and perhaps it is good to be able to enjoy it now without the threat of a wrong note or some dissonant harmony sparking off an international incident...
