BASED ON THE BOOK BY
MUSIC & LYRICS BY JOE STILGOE · DIRECTED BY EMMA KILBEY Large in size and keen in nature, Zog is eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know. Zog tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet… a duel with knight, Sir Gadabout the Great! The smash-hit stage adaptation from Freckle Productions (the team behind Stick Man, Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and Tabby McTat) is back at Cadogan Hall and promises to be bigger, brighter and more roar-some than ever before! With lively songs from Joe Stilgoe (The Jungle Book, The Midnight Gang) and directed by Emma Kilbey, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog is a magical production for all ages.

MARMEN QUARTET
Celebrated British clarinettist Michael Collins is joined by cellist Adrian Brendel and pianist Michael McHale to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Austrian composer Alexander von Zemlinsky. Charged with fin de siècle intensity and taut musical drama, the young Zemlinsky’s Clarinet Trio was much influenced by Brahms, at whose recommendation it was published. A contemporary said of Brahms’s own Trio in A minor that ‘it is as though the instruments are in love with each other’. With its graceful waltz of an intermezzo and dashing finale with hints of Gypsy swagger, it’s a musical love affair played out in glorious technicolour.

British vocal ensemble the Marian Consort makes its Proms debut with a concert celebrating Renaissance master Josquin des Prez 500 years after his death. In a season of musical borrowings, three of Josquin’s greatest motets, all drawing on pre-existing material, are paired with three musical homages – including the kaleidoscopic Inviolata, integra et casta es by the first published black composer, Vicente Lusitano – that each rework Josquin’s own music for a new age.

Marmen Quartet
The prize-winning young Marmen Quartet, formed in 2013 at London’s Royal College of Music, makes its BBC Proms debut with Haydn’s vivacious ‘Lark’ Quartet, which opens with a soaring violin melody that gives the work its nickname. It is also the inspiration for the String Quartet No. 1 by Robert Simpson, performed in this centenary year of his birth. Its opening draws on Haydn’s own initial theme and its ingenuous coda reflects Haydn’s elegant simplicity, with a nod to Beethoven thrown in for good measure.

Former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Sean Shibe has been breaking down musical boundaries and winning awards since he erupted onto the classical music scene almost a decade ago. Now the young guitarist makes his muchanticipated Proms debut, joining forces with flautist Adam Walker and mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta for a concert celebrating the centenaries of two Argentine composers. Songs by Ariel Ramírez follow Astor Piazzolla’s Histoire du tango – tracing the dance’s colourful history from its origins in the bordellos of Buenos Aires via cafés and nightclubs to the contemporary concert hall. 06

A triptych of 20th-century sonatas by Saint-Saëns, Dutilleux and Poulenc forms the heart of this Anglo-French programme. The cool lines of Saint-Saëns’s neo-Classical sonata give way to the edgier, mercurial beauty of Dutilleux’s, while the Poulenc pays musical homage to its dedicatee, Sergey Prokofiev, ending with a ravishing lament. Eugène Bozza’s lyrical Fantaisie pastorale and Ruth Gipps’s vivid Sea-Shore Suite complete the recital.
Pauline Viardot and Her Circle Ema Nikolovska mezzo-soprano Malcolm Martineau piano
A household name across Europe during the late 19th century, Pauline Viardot was an international opera star by 18, studied the piano with Liszt, played duets with Chopin, charmed Saint-Saëns, Berlioz, Gounod and the writer Turgenev, and hosted the greatest musical salon of her day. She was also a fine composer, though one still heard too rarely today. BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Ema Nikolovska and pianist Malcolm Martineau invite you to step into Viardot’s drawing room for a lunchtime recital of music by Viardot, her friends and her contemporaries – including Gounod, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Chopin.

Frankie’s Guys
Josquin 500
A celebration of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons
Peter Philips director
Voted the UK’s best tribute in 2020, this award-winning celebration of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons proudly features West End leading men from hit musicals such as Jersey Boys.
The Tallis Scholars’ determination to celebrate Josquin des Prez, who died 500 years ago, concentrates on his 18 mass settings, all of which they have recorded as a set. The last of these recordings, and the programme for this concert, includes the iconic Missa Hercules dux Ferrariae, whose fame is based on how Josquin referred to his patron in just about every bar of his composition. This was done by taking the eight syllables of Ercole’s name and putting the same eight notes to them, over and over again. The result is completely mesmerising. But in order to discourage everyone from going into a trance, the movements of the Mass are divided up with a variety of other items, scored for exactly the same choir as the Mass. Josquin’s Veni sancte spiritus and Stabat Mater, alongside some quite different textures by Palestrina and Byrd, are designed to piece together a fascinating evening of great polyphony, ranging over a century in time.
Paying a charismatic tribute to Frankie Valli, his life, his music and his legacy; Frankie’s Guys are back (sanitiser in hand) and ready for 2021 with a fresh take on their award-winning show. Featuring unrivalled vocals, slick moves and side-splitting comedy (they think they’re really funny), this is a night out at the theatre you don’t want to miss! Taking you back to the era of live music – effortlessly recreated by their trusty (and cheeky) band, get ready to sing-along to over 20 timeless classics, such as Big Girls Don’t Cry, Sherry, Walk Like A Man, Oh What A Night! and many more. Gemma Rosefield cello Stephen Brearley conductor The Doctors’ Orchestra’s twelfth concert in support of Freedom from Torture opens with the brilliant Bartered Bride Overture by Bedřich Smetana, the acknowledged ‘father of Czech music’, and concludes with one of the greatest works by the greatest of Czech composers, Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor. The outstanding cellist Gemma Rosefield makes her second appearance with the Orchestra in Dvořák’s passionate Concerto, which he composed in the United States but is suffused with longing for his Czech homeland. As well as the dreaded flu the world had just emerged from the war to end all wars and America was now determined to dampen the spirits even further with Prohibition. Jazz came to the rescue.

Acclaimed British violinist Chloë Hanslip performs Korngold’s Violin Concerto in a concert full of musical tales with snippets of film music, folk song and storytelling. Korngold’s sweet and lyrical Violin Concerto shows the film music composer at his greatest powers, contrasted with Janáček’s dramatic retelling of Gogol’s Taras Bulba, a story of death and war. Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony completes the evening with its trademark warmth and much-loved melodies.
Liszt’s Hamlet weaves together drama and tragedy in a symphonic poem that depicts the Shakespearean hero, before awarding-winning Hungarian soloist Barnabás Kelemen performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3.
