Why I’m looking forward to Autumn

Iain Burnside, Pianist / Broadcaster
But then the great thing about Cadogan Hall is its flexibility. In here the sound of a full symphony orchestra knocks your socks off, while the clarity of acoustic can also let you unravel the interwoven lines of Tudor polyphony. Lovers of ensemble singing are in for a particular treat this season, with a starry line-up that includes The Tallis Scholars, Monteverdi Choir and King’s Singers. If you’ve never seen I Fagiolini, then go. Their director Robert Hollingsworth is a genius, breathing life into a repertoire that for centuries has gathered dust on library shelves. There’s no dust on Nino Rota and Ludovico Einaudi – if you enjoy movie music, there are treats in store with those two very different masters. When it comes to Christmas, good luck. How to choose between Bach from the Academy of Ancient Music, the infectious enthusiasm of Maddy Prior and the naughtiest boys in town, Kit and the Widow?”

“What a feast, in just three months! It’s impossible not to be struck by the sheer range of events here at Cadogan Hall: from the close-up intensity of a late Beethoven quartet to a full-on Tchaikovsky symphony; from Grange Park’s rising opera stars in Madama Butterfly to the unique Venetian majesty of Monteverdi’s Vespers; from Stile Antico all the way through to Maz Jobrani.
The new style of this season’s brochure will help – events are listed in colour-coded sections so if you don’t want to miss the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing Elgar turn to the Orchestral section, if you want to book early for Ex Cathedra’s Monteverdi Vespers turn to the Choral pages or to find out more about the family show We’re Going on a Bear Hunt turn to the Contemporary section. There are 111 different events listed in this brochure so choose a few and create your very own autumn season of entertainment! As a curtain-raiser to our 400th-anniversary performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, the vibrantly French ensemble Le Poème Harmonique conjures up the carnivalesque atmosphere of 17th-century Venice, where the streets and palaces provided a cultural melting pot for the popular and artistic styles of the day. Along with one of Monteverdi’s most famous madrigals, the Lamento della ninfa, the programme includes rarely heard music by Francesco Manelli, the first composer to write operas for the paying public as opposed to the privileged court.

Orpheus Foundation’s annual Cadogan Hall concert is a must-see highlight of the calendar. This year the Orpheus Sinfonia – an orchestra for some of the finest young professional musicians in central London – will be 80 players strong. The orchestra’s reputation for energy and panache will be in its element for Prokofiev’s dramatic and passionate Romeo & Juliet. The soloist in Dvořák’s timelessly popular Cello Concerto will be the 25-year old Belarusian Aleksei Kiseliov and this performance marks this magnificent young cellist’s Cadogan Hall concerto début.

The Cyprus High Commission in the UK presents a concert on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus. It includes the UK premiere of Treasured Island by Christodoulos Georgiades and Sophia Serghi’s Shall We Dance?, a medley of evocative dances. The concert constitutes one of the emblematic events organised within the framework of the Anniversary programme in European capitals.
Abandoning Silence is a dynamic new concert series presented by The Human Culture Collective, aiming to raise awareness of human trafficking through orchestral music. The International Orchestra for Freedom, a fresh new orchestra of the UK’s top classical musicians from The Royal College of Music and The Royal Academy of Music are joined by cellist Thomas Carroll. The debut Prayer for Humanity composed by Julene Siddique is a symphonic narration of human rights and the honouring of universal values.

Even though Tchaikovsky’s musical output consisted of many romantic and memorable orchestral works, his equally well-crafted orchestral opera scores are often less well-remembered. The Polonaise from his opera Eugene Onegin is a fine example of his gift for this genre. His Violin Concerto was dismissed and regarded as unplayable and awkward; the Concerto’s dedicatee even refused to perform the work. Tchaikovsky thankfully stuck to his laurels and this Concerto has become a firm favourite for the concert platform. Though Tchaikovsky was experiencing great emotional pain while writing his ‘Pathétique’ Symphony, it arguably remains his most dramatic and inspired work.

The set of six string quartets, Op. 18, saw Beethoven exploring new compositional territory. Though grounded in the classical tradition of Haydn and Mozart, these quartets demonstrate new attitudes and techniques, while being more traditional than his later quartets. The Quartet in E flat major Op. 127 opens the series of the last Beethovenian quartets, the first of a group of three commissioned by Prince Nicolai Galitzin in 1825. These three works broke new ground in quartet thinking and sound. Op. 127 reflects the compression and intensity of Op. 95, and ushers in the period of sustained invention and creative self-interrogation that went with the sufferings of the composer’s last years.

Beethoven had composed the first two movements of Quartet in A minor, Op. 132 in 1825 when he was taken gravely ill with an intestinal inflammation. The “sacred song of thanks from a convalescent to the Godhead” which beats slowly then rapturously at the quartet’s heart was his testament of recovery. Op. 59, No. 1 is the first of three quartets commissioned by Prince Razumovsky and is the first of Beethoven’s middle period quartets showing a departure in style from his earlier quartets. It is typically over 40 minutes long, unlike the earlier quartets which last around 30 minutes and requires a greatly expanded technical repertoire. Between the early quartets and Op. 59 set, Beethoven entered his ‘Heroic’ period, characterized by a broadened scale, emotional fire, and bold originality.

The B flat major quartet No. 6 contains one of the most tragic passages found in the entire Op. 18 and many writers have commented on the brief anguished slow passage at the start of the final movement as the real beginnings of Romanticism in music. Due to its musical dynamism and the powerful contrasts Quartet No. 1 in F major is considered the greatest work of the six. The last of the exciting and technically challenging Razumovsky Quartets, No. 3, lacks the explicit Russian themes of the first two but many commentators have heard a ‘Russian’ character in the subject of the second movement, the andantino.

Freddy Kempf has become one of the most important young artists of today performing to sell-out audiences all over the world. He has built a unique reputation both as an explosive and physical performer as well as serious, sensitive and profoundly musical artist.
Beethoven wrote his Op. 18, No. 2 quartet in G major between the years of 1798-1800. It has earned the nickname ‘Compliments’ because it is so polite and graceful in nature. Quartet Op. 74 has been called ‘Harp’ referring to the characteristic pizzicato sections in the allegro of the first movement, where pairs of members of the quartet alternate notes in an arpeggio, reminiscent of the plucking of a harp. Op. 131 was Beethoven’s favourite from the late quartets. He is quoted as remarking to a friend: “thank God there is less lack of imagination than ever before.” It is said that upon listening to a performance of this quartet, Schubert remarked, “After this, what is left for us to write?”

Op. 18, No. 4, the C minor string quartet, was composed in 1800 and is the only one to be set in a minor key. Another unexpected and curious structural feature of the four movement score is the lack of a slow movement, instead utilising both a minuet and a scherzo.

Op. 135, begun in 1826, was dedicated to Johann Wolfmayer just a few days before his death. Beethoven sent a note to the publisher along with the final manuscript: “Here, my dear friend, is my last quartet. It will be the last; and indeed it has given me much trouble. For I could not bring myself to compose the last movement.” It was not ultimately his last movement. Beethoven wrote one more. His last movement was the replacement finale for Op. 130, replacing the gritty grosse fuge, which will be played in the next concert; this much shorter and lighter finale was Beethoven’s final movement.

A quintessentially English concert devoted to the music of Edward Elgar, featuring four familiar yet distinctive works. The Serenade for Strings, full of youthful charm, and the melodious Chanson de Matin provide a wonderful showcase for the Orchestra’s string section. Elgar’s Sea Pictures, five wonderful ‘seascape’ poems that highlight the changing moods and colours of the sea, were composed around the same time as the magnificent ‘Enigma’ Variations, featuring the stirring Nimrod variation, profound and nationalistic in style.

The fugue is a single-movement composition famous for its extreme technical demands on the players as well as for its unrelentingly introspective nature. Originally composed as the finale to Op. 130, it was written in 1825-1826, when the composer was completely deaf. Unpopular with audiences of the time it is now considered to be among Beethoven’s greatest achievements. Igor Stravinsky said of it, “(it is) an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever.”

Founded by Henrik Chaim Goldschmidt in 2003 with the mission to perform concerts for peace, the Middle East Peace Orchestra is a unique collaboration between various ethnic groups of professional musicians. The performers come from Israel, the Palestine areas, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Scandinavia and are all handpicked virtuosos representing the best of their traditions. The music performed will combine an array of cultures with songs sung in Arabic, Hebrew, Chazanut, many of them compositions by members of the band. The programme is dramatic, passionate and poetic. ticketS £25 £20 £15 £10
Britten’s introduction to the orchestra has thrilled audiences young and old over the years with his familiar use of Purcell’s grand theme, presented characteristically by each instrument of the orchestra from piccolo to percussion. Equally popular is Mendelssohn’s virtuosic Concerto, with its swift and luscious melodies that require great dexterity from the soloist. Schumann’s ‘Rhenish’ Symphony acts as something of a musical journey, portraying scenes from along the River Rhine including the imposing skyline of Cologne with its towering Cathedral.

Freddy Kempf returns to Cadogan Hall to play Mozart’s lyrical Piano Concerto No. 23, with the Mozarteum Orchestra from Salzburg, Mozart’s native city. Written just five years before the composer died, the work features one of Mozart’s most poignantly beautiful slow movements. The programme opens with Schubert’s great ‘Unfinished’ Symphony, featuring brilliant melodies, triumphant harmonies and soaring orchestral passages, and ends with Beethoven’s evocative ‘Pastoral’ Symphony, celebrating the composer’s love of the countryside, with vividly descriptive passages imitating bird song and the sounds of a violent thunderstorm.

Mahler is known for large-scale symphonies, and his Piano Quartet Movement is the only surviving example of his chamber music, written at the age of 16. Only one movement was completed, featuring three contrasting themes, full of romantic ideas. Similarly, Wagner’s symphonic poem, Siegfried Idyll – written as a birthday gift for his wife – is a surprisingly intimate work, with the colourful music radiating expressions of triumphant love and affection. The programme ends with Mahler’s Songs of the Earth, originally a set of songs with orchestra, but later arranged for chamber orchestra by Schoenberg.
One of the world’s leading chamber orchestras, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is joined by three of today’s leading classical musicians to perform an exhilarating programme. Acclaimed worldwide for his purity of musicianship and expressive sensitivity, cellist Steven Isserlis joins his regular chamber music partner, American violinist Joshua Bell, to perform Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Cello – the composer’s last work for orchestra. Both solo instruments play truly virtuosic parts throughout, accompanied by rich orchestral harmonies.

The programme opens with Mozart’s sparkling Overture to the Marriage of Figaro, before talented young pianist Natasha Paremski performs Beethoven’s explosive Fifth Piano Concerto, a work that shows the composer at his boldest and most innovative. Although not Beethoven’s name, the work’s nickname ‘Emperor’ aptly evokes the music’s impressive scale and majesty, from the march-like theme in the first movement, to the gently lyrical second movement and triumphant finale. Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 was nicknamed the ‘Pastoral’, and moves from a lush, rural idyll to a fiery, dramatic finale.

Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya performs one of the most difficult concertos in the repertoire, Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, which requires both phenomenal technique and exceptional lyricism. The work’s three movements include thunderous climaxes, heavily romantic themes and extended firework displays of extreme virtuosity. In contrast, Debussy’s gentle Prélude à l’après midi d’un faune is an early masterpiece of musical impressionism, shimmering with evocative colours and sounds. The programme ends with SaintSaën’s Symphony No. 3, featuring virtuoso piano passages, brilliant orchestral writing and prominent sections for a pipe organ.

Ex Cathedra makes its debut at Cadogan Hall with one of the greatest works in the history of music. Demanding instrumental and vocal acrobatics, Monteverdi’s Vespers collection from 1610 is ambitious in scale and almost operatic in mood. Performed by just 10 singers and some of the country’s finest period instrumentalists, it is also thrillingly immediate and 16 October is a resonant date on which to celebrate the 400th anniversary of this famous collection.

Gluck’s retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice adds a happy ending to their story of love and loss. This original Italian version, first performed in 1762, was an operatic landmark, conveying extremes of human emotion in a simple classical style, most movingly in the famous aria Che farò senza Euridice? The chorus plays an integral part in the opera, as nymphs, shepherds, furies and blessed spirits.

Ex Cathedra makes its debut at Cadogan Hall with one of the greatest works in the history of music. Demanding instrumental and vocal acrobatics, Monteverdi’s Vespers collection from 1610 is ambitious in scale and almost operatic in mood. Performed by just 10 singers and some of the country’s finest period instrumentalists, it is also thrillingly immediate and 16 October is a resonant date on which to celebrate the 400th anniversary of this famous collection.

reger Nachtlied Schumann Der Eidgenossen Nachtwache
Gluck’s retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice adds a happy ending to their story of love and loss. This original Italian version, first performed in 1762, was an operatic landmark, conveying extremes of human emotion in a simple classical style, most movingly in the famous aria Che farò senza Euridice? The chorus plays an integral part in the opera, as nymphs, shepherds, furies and blessed spirits.

Cherubini’s impassioned account of a scorned wife’s bloody revenge closely mirrors its Greek ancestry. It was first performed in Paris in 1797 (technically opéra comique because of its spoken dialogue, though with recitatives by other hands in later German and Italian versions). Its fury and horror were without precedent in French opera at that time.

The Academy of Ancient Music presents a festive performance of J. S. Bach’s music as part of The Bach Dynasty, a year-long celebration of the work of the Bach family. The exuberant Magnificat, written for Christmas Day 1723, forms the centrepiece of the programme, whilst two of Bach’s finest instrumental concertos provide music by turns virtuosic, playful and fiery. ticketS £40 £32 £28 £22 £15
Works by Arvo Pärt are central in the choir’s programme alongside classical and contemporary highlights including romantic colours in Mendelssohn’s Psalm settings, Nordic influences in the beautiful cycle of love songs Rakastava by Sibelius, and works by the famed Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek.

In celebration of renaissance master Tomás Luis de Victoria in the 400th anniversary of his death, this programme pairs Victoria’s famous Lamentations and the Pentecost motet Dum complerentur with Palestrina’s motet of the same title along with his Tribulationes civitatum and Tu es Petrus.
A Hilliard Songbook presents some of the ensemble’s favourite pieces, old and new, sacred and secular. Ranging from the Gloria of Machaut’s famous Messe de Notre Dame, via traditional Armenian Sharakans, through to Arvo Pärt’s recently composed Most Holy Mother of God.

Intermission is a charity which engages young people from London’s inner-city communities, giving them an opportunity to connect with and find their voice through the performing arts. An evening not to be missed for an extremely good cause.
Originally conceived as a Royal Balletcommissioned collaboration between composer Max Richter, choreographer Wayne McGregor and artist Julian Opie, Max Richter’s gorgeous score to Infra was written in autumn 2008 and premiered in November of the same year at The Royal Opera House in London. Expanded and extended from the original piece so that it could be released as an album on FatCat Records, Infra comprises music written for piano, electronics and string quintet. Ludovico Einaudi in Concert
Ludovico Einaudi Family friendly matinee
Elkie Brooks 50th Anniversary Tour
Maz Jobrani
A real event for lovers of Ludovico Einaudi’s music – the composer and his piano in a special solo concert setting. The Italian composer and pianist creates beautiful music from a quiet place: the welcome sound of stillness in a hectic world. And he’s an exceptional pianist: his beautiful and evocative music has kept him among the best-selling and most requested recording artists around.
Join us on Sunday afternoon for a family friendly matinee with Ludovico Einaudi. This performance welcomes young people and accompanying adults to hear a selection of Einaudi’s best known and much loved classics from his critically acclaimed solo albums. Einaudi’s sweeping compositions draw inspiration from rock, classical music and contemporary pop, but always with the piano at the centre of the sound. His work has struck a strong visual response with audiences and film directors alike; parts of his album Divenire were used in the soundtrack to Shane Meadows’ film This Is England and other past albums such as Eden Roc, Le Onde, I Giorni and Una Mattina have been woven into a variety of film scores.
Performing some of her classic hits, blues, jazz and perhaps a song or two from her forthcoming album, an electric evening with Elkie is guaranteed to leave you begging for more. Quite simply one of the most successful and popular singers the UK has ever produced. Now celebrating her 50th year in music, she is still proving to be one of the most powerful and versatile vocal talents of our generation.
With numerous hit singles, million selling albums and awards, her annual tours are a treat for fans old and new. Elkie is a stunning performer and whatever she does, she does it best live. Don’t miss the chance to see a truly great artist in action.

Early music iconoclast Philip Pickett joins forces with folk legend Richard Thompson in a programme of spicy ballads, folk songs and dances from Shakespeare’s London. With the internationally-renowned Musicians of the Globe they explore an eclectic mix of Elizabethan popular music from London's taverns, streets, coffee houses and private rooms, with a host of unusual instruments including violin, rebec, recorder, cittern, bandora, early guitar, viol and lute.
In their annual Christmas concert, Western Europe’s Leading Piano-and-voice-based Lounge Act will be joined at the hearthside by the 32 bauble-encrusted members of the Southbank Sinfonia. With their latest satirical songs the ‘astonishingly competent’ duo (Hexham Courant) will open the doors on the Advent calendar of 2010 to the glorious sounds of a full symphony orchestra, as Kit tries his luck on a yuletide vuvuzela.
All Angels and Hendon Band of The Salvation Army renew their association in this year’s concert of Christmas music. All Angels will be contributing several spots during the evening and there will be audience participation in carol singing to add to this ‘brass and voice’ run-up to Christmas Day.

First opened in 1907 as a New Christian Science Church designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm, the hall hosted congregations of 1600 in its heyday, however, like most other churches there was a decline in attendances. In the 1980s there was a congregation of barely 150. By 1996 the congregation was no longer able to cope and sold the building, which then fell into disuse. Cadogan Estate purchased the hall in 2000 to safeguard its future. Through their connection with Opera Holland Park, Cadogan discovered that the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was looking for a permanent base in London. Cadogan Hall was an excellent opportunity for the orchestra to benefit from Cadogan’s aim to bring the former church back into useful life in a manner befitting its character and civic presence. On one level the conversion of this large relatively modern listed building into a performance space seems straightforward. After all, there was a ready-made auditorium with a raked floor, a stage, a proscenium and a gallery. Unfortunately modern expectations of comfort and facilities let alone the requirements of building and licensing regulations meant extensive and fundamental changes had to be made.
The acoustics of the building were a big issue both in terms of environmental acoustics – the control of sound break-out from the building – and performance acoustics within the auditorium. The ceiling and the roof had to be re-detailed to provide acoustic insulation. Tuned resonator tubes were installed on the main ceiling and the walls under the gallery and the undersides of the tip-up seats in the stalls also have a pattern of absorption holes to retain the hall’s acoustic character. The new performance lighting and sound systems in the auditorium include the computer controlled theatrical lights on the ceiling. These provide lighting for rehearsals but really come into their own when they are programmed to rotate, change light beam colours and patterns and provide other special effects for performances. A large screen for films and visual presentations can be lowered and allows performances elsewhere to be relayed live by satellite or the internet. The organ installed in 1911 was carefully dismantled and put into store to await re-installation in its new home in a church in the Midlands. The organ casing, an integral part of the character of the Auditorium along with timber panelling and balustrading from the platform, was also put into store. When the organ screen was re-assembled and nearly a century of dirt was removed it was found that each of the column capitals and each of the carvings around the arching balustrade are unique – a surprise discovery that added to the richness of the building.
Despite the scale of the auditorium the combined effects of the stage, the steeply raked stalls and the low gallery create a surprisingly intimate venue where the audience experiences a very real feeling of being part of the performance. The stained glass was designed by a Danish nobleman. Baron Arild Rosenkrantz, had learnt the art of stained glass whilst working with Tiffany in New York. The designs for Cadogan Hall were said to exhibit “artistic simplicity of patterning and to provide efficiency of lighting and economy consistent with dignity”. There are no allegorical images and only one window has text. All the windows were removed and taken by a specialist to workshops for painstaking restoration. Although the Celtic knot motifs are simple and the use of colour restrained, the dramatic effect of the restored glass was another pleasant surprise during the refurbishment process.
