Russian State Opera presents Tosca

A Celebration of Howard Blake

Howard Blake Sleepwalking Concerto for Piano and Orchestra Diversions for Cello and Orchestra Elegia Stravagante (Duo Concertante) Howard Blake conductor Sophie Witte soprano Sasha Grynyuk piano Benedict Kloeckner cello Nicolas Dautricourt violin Join composer and conductor Howard Blake for a magical evening of some of his stunning works. Best-known for his soundtrack to the acclaimed children’s film The Snowman, he has a lyrical gift which demonstrates an intense musicality and knowledge of the popular mind. Each of the pieces in the evening’s programme is related in some way to the life and tragic death of Princess Diana. Sleepwalking, composed in 1997, is a meditation on her life, the Piano Concerto was commissioned for her 30th birthday, and the brand new Elegia Stravagante commemorates the 20th anniversary of her death.

After a successful tour with Carmen and Madama Butterfly last year, Russian State Opera returns with another beautiful production of one of the greatest opera classics – Tosca. Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a live orchestra, this Puccini masterpiece will be sure to intrigue and fascinate you. Tosca is a melodrama where love and politics collide. Originally set in Rome in 1800s, it tells the story of two idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi. Their trust is set to be tested by Scarpia, the ruthless police officer who has no boundaries. Scarpia has sentenced Cavaradossi to death. The officer is prepared to let Cavaradossi go if Tosca is willing to spend the night with Scarpia… One of the most emotionally engaging and popular operas of all time, this haunting tragedy with its breathtaking arias, will transport you to the world of romantic Rome, full of drama, passion, love, and betrayal. ‘By far the best company to bring Russian opera to British audiences’ (Stage Talk Magazine) Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Albert Hammond in Symphony

The Tallis Scholars

with the Leipzig Symphony Orchestra

Part of Choral at Cadogan 2017-18

Prolific songwriter Albert Hammond performs a rare UK symphonic concert, joined on stage by Germany’s Leipzig Orchestra, led by conductor Andris Nelsons.

Palestrina Laudate pueri Palestrina Virgo prudentissima Monteverdi Messa a quattro voci da cappella (1650) Allegri Miserere Gesualdo O vos omnes, Aestimatus sum Lotti Crucifixus Monteverdi Crucifixus Monteverdi Adoramus te Monteverdi Domine ne in furore Monteverdi Cantate Domino

Known for writing timeless classics performed by the likes of Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Leo Sayer, The Hollies and Starship, Albert will be presenting songs from his new record In Symphony, a celebration of his career spanning 50+ years. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, the songs on the album are reimagined versions of hits Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, One Moment In Time, When I Need You and many others, orchestrated and arranged by Grammynominated composer Rob Mathes (Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Jay Z). With 30 chart-topping hits and combined sales of 360 million, on this album Albert is giving a unique treatment to many of his own singles and ‘taking back’ tracks that have been worldwide hits for others.

Tickets: Stalls £38.50; Gallery: £32.50

Peter Phillips director This programme of Italian masterpieces is centred round the unaccompanied (or prima prattica) writing of Monteverdi, the anniversary of whose birth in 1567 is being celebrated. This a cappella style reached its zenith in the music of Palestrina and then acquired a more harmonic and even madrigalian focus, as shown in the Monteverdi works, a process which could go no further once in the hands of Gesualdo. Add to this Allegri’s Miserere – arguably the most famous piece of choral music in the world – and this promises to be an evening to savour. Southbank Sinfonia Family Concert

Jazz at Carnegie Hall

Lee Reynolds conductor

For over 100 years the greatest names in jazz history have performed at the world’s best known concert venue, New York’s Carnegie Hall. We begin in 1912 with the proto-jazz of James Rees Europe and then onto the roaring 20s of Paul Whiteman and the swing era of the 30s with music by Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong and Glenn Miller.

If you were creating a piece of music for an orchestra, where might you start? Perhaps a lightning bolt of sound to grab everyone’s attention… or an upbeat dance that gets your toes tapping… or a beautiful tune that gets stuck in the listener’s head? The options are endless, but with Poulenc’s action-packed Sinfonietta, Southbank Sinfonia’s musicians will help you explore some of the tools used to make brilliant music. In the concert, specially-made videos provide an up-close insight to the music being played. Afterwards, you can ask the musicians all your questions and try out an array of instruments. Ideal for children aged 5-11.

Tickets: Children £6.50; Adults £10

Following the huge critical acclaim of their album, Piazzolla and Beyond, London Concertante once again explores the theme of tango. Alongside its interpretation of Vivaldi’s stunning music, and as part of their groundbreaking new project, Tango Vivaldi, the ensemble develops the strong beats, dreamy slow movements, and sudden changes of texture of both Vivaldi and tango to create a rhythmical, powerful, hot-blooded and dynamic new sound in new arrangements and compositions by composer, David Gordon. Beethoven Egmont Overture Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Ravel) Ravel La valse

Cinerama (with strings and trumpet) The Membranes (with choir) Such Small Hands (with films)

Jack Liebeck violin Rimma Sushanskaya conductor Conductor Rimma Sushanskaya celebrates her debut with the National Symphony Orchestra by presenting a hugely attractive programme featuring Ravel’s vibrant orchestration. Notable for its colour and ingenuity, Ravel’s arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is a prodigious feat of instrumental imagination. In La valse nostalgic memories take a dark and unexpected turn, ‘a kind of apotheosis of the Viennese waltz, mingled with destiny’s fantastic whirl’.

Schubert Masterpieces

Mendelssohn Verleih uns Frieden Schubert Symphony No. 8, (Unfinished) Schubert Mass No. 6 in E flat major Raphaela Papadakis soprano Amy Lyddon mezzo-soprano Bradley Smith tenor James Way tenor Laurence Williams bass Counterpoint Mark Forkgen conductor Schubert’s magnificent and rarely-performed final Mass was composed in 1828, just before his tragically early death. The setting is on a vast scale – principally choral, with the orchestral colour dominated by woodwinds, brass and timpani. The symphony was begun six years earlier; although unfinished, its two movements are complete in themselves as the sublime second movement resolves the tensions of the first. Both works combine Schubert’s mastery of classical structure with his own gift for lyricism but also include astonishing harmonies in the early Romantic style. Mendelssohn’s anthem is a graceful prayer for peace strongly influenced by Bach. Tickets: £30, £25, £20, £16, £12

Extrovert and engagingly freespirited, ECM pianist Stefano Bollani live is a veritable tourde-force, a musical torrent of improvisation and spontaneous humour, infused with the warmth and humanity of his Italian heritage. His love affair with the city of Naples stretches back years, and comes to exuberant life in a performance that resonates with the heart and soul of a city full of contrasts. Thelonious Sphere Monk remains a seminal figure in the evolution of contemporary jazz, a wayward genius and force of nature whose spiky, instantly recognisable piano style and writing refer back to jazz masters like Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington, but whose vision was of a future seen through the prism of a bebop revolution in the ’40s where Monk himself played a key role. Pianist Jonathan Gee and saxophonist Tony Kofi re-visit a previously landmark Festival project, playing all Monk’s songs in a day, with three concerts, each inspired by a classic Monk album, as well as recalling collaborations

with the likes of Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Gerry Mulligan, with an ensemble packed with British jazz talent, including Cleveland Watkiss, Byron Wallen, Jason Yarde, Jean Toussaint, Jim Rattigan, Andy Grappy, Ben Hazelton and Rod Youngs. Andrew Manze has been the Principal Conductor of the orchestra since the 2014-15 season. Lars Vogt has established himself as one of the leading musicians of his generation. Born in the German town of Düren in 1970, he first came to public attention when he won Second Prize at the 1990 Leeds International Piano Competition and has enjoyed a varied career for nearly 25 years. He joins the orchestra for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, premiered in 1795 with young Beethoven as soloist, marking the composer’s public debut.

Lau have made such a mark in the last 10 years – winning Best Group four times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, seamlessly blending the worlds of acoustic folk tradition and electronica, as well as the individual acclaim that Kris Drever (vocals, guitar), Martin Green (accordion, Wurlitzer, keys and electronics) and Aidan O’Rourke on fiddle have garnered. ‘Lau are a remarkable band — the most musically adventurous trio in British folk: exquisite and hypnotic, musicianship at its best’ (The Guardian). June this year saw the release of a selfexplanatory compilation Decade: The Best of 2007-2017, and in the autumn they’ll be taking off on tour to play the album live – two sets, with no support act. Rick Wakeman: Piano Portraits In Concert

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Following the sell-out success of his spring Piano Portraits UK tour, keyboard player, composer and broadcaster, Rick Wakeman performs an additional Piano Portrait show this November at Cadogan Hall.

Enescu Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 Grieg Piano Concerto Lipatti Concertino in Classical Style Tchaikovsky Francesca da Rimini

He made chart history in January when his Piano Portraits album became the first solo piano album to enter the UK’s Top 10. Initially inspired by the unprecedented reaction to his performance of David Bowie’s Life On Mars on BBC Radio 2 in early 2016, Piano Portraits features instrumental versions of hits Rick originally performed on (Space Oddity, Morning Has Broken and Wondrous Stories) as well as others specifically chosen for their wonderful melodies, including Stairway To Heaven, Help and Eleanor Rigby. He has also added a selection of some of his favourite classical pieces (Berceuse, Clair de Lune and Swan Lake). The show includes ten pieces from the album, plus other favourites, all interspersed with hilarious anecdotes from this accomplished raconteur.

Alexandra Dariescu performs Grieg

The concert will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Francesca da Rimini, which illustrates the tragic tale of Francesca, the beauty who appeared in Dante’s Divine Comedy. 6.15pm: Pre-concert Talk (in the main auditorium) Writer and Lipatti researcher Orlando Murrin talks about Dinu Lipatti’s legacy, including new information about his three visits to Britain, his composing career and the recent discovery of the only known film footage of the great pianist.
