Henning Wehn Westphalia is not an option

Join German Comedy Ambassador Henning Wehn for an evening of Teutonic jolliness at its best. After his last show tackled those well-known staples of light entertainment that are the British obsession with home ownership and the self-serving nature of most fundraising efforts, this time Henning’s having an unbiased look at immigration. He also wonders, if, generally speaking, people are competent. Luckily in his case this doesn’t matter as either he’s funny or he lives up to a national stereotype. It’s a win-win situation. Come along. Or else. Henning’s latest TV appearances include Have I got News For You (BBC1), Live at the Apollo (BBC2), Would I Lie to You (BBC1) and Bake Off - Extra Slice (BBC2). ‘Wehn wraps his vowels around the issues of immigration and identity. And he triumphs at it.’ (The Times) ‘His accent is not so much German as indescribable’ (Daily Mail)

London Chamber Orchestra Exploring Emotions: Love of Homeland and Wanderlust

Handel Messiah Tenebrae English Chamber Orchestra Grace Davidson soprano Kitty Whately mezzo-soprano James Gilchrist tenor Christopher Purves bass Nigel Short conductor Handel’s Messiah isn’t just an oratorio: it’s practically a national institution. Everyone knows the Hallelujah chorus, but if that’s all you know, you’re in for a wonderful surprise – and you don’t have to be religious to be stirred by some of the most heartfelt and uplifting music ever written. No Christmas is complete without it and tonight the English Chamber Orchestra has teamed up with baroque music expert Nigel Short and his famous chamber choir Tenebrae, plus some of the UK’s finest vocal soloists, to recreate the grandeur, the glory and the pure inspiration of this best-loved of all choral masterpieces.

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel Dvořák Symphony No. 9 (From the New World) Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor Derek Welton bass-baritone LCO’s Cadogan Hall season continues with an exploration of the conflicting emotions of love of homeland and a longing for the new. Inspired by master composer of the Tudor era Thomas Tallis, Vaughan Williams evokes the pastoral English landscape in his haunting Fantasia. In Songs of Travel, Englishman Vaughan Williams set to music poems by Scot Robert Louis Stevenson where we meet a resolute traveller determined to discover the world; while Dvořák’s New World Symphony is surely one of the greatest love letters to one country written by a composer from another.

Moulettes + 9Bach With Ayanna Witter-Johnson

The Bands of the Household Division Featuring musicians from the five regiments of Foot Guards alongside musicians of the Household Cavalry Band and the Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra the concert showcases an exciting eclectic mix of music and visually stunning performances. This inspiring repertoire of traditional and modern music from around the world includes the Harry James Trumpet Concerto, Ravel’s Bolero and a solo performance from this year’s winner of the Musician of the Year Competition. The evening promises to feature many of the finest soloists and ensembles from across State Ceremonial music, led by the Senior Director of Music Household Division, Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Roberts and culminates with the spectacular Windows of The World, which includes visits to Amazonia and the Rainforests!

Moulettes are one of the UK’s most unique touring bands. Having formed in early 2000s, they have fast become renowned for their breath-taking live shows. It is clear that few bands have the creative range and work ethic of Moulettes. With a brave approach to production and arrangement Moulettes look for peculiar ways of blending acoustic and electric instruments. Joining them for what is sure to be an extremely memorable show is Welsh alternative folk outfit 9Bach. Formed in 2005, 9Bach’s music is an atmospheric, evocative, and emotional hybrid of the Welsh folk tradition and of contemporary influences and working practices. Their songs are built on a deepened, almost ambient sound picture and they take you into the landscape and the emotions that it evokes.

The title ‘Scarlet & Gold’ evokes the ceremonial splendour and sparkle of the Guards’ uniforms and instruments which, combined with the beautiful setting of Cadogan Hall, promises an outstanding evening of musical pomp and grandeur.

They are joined by rising star Ayanna WitterJohnson. This vocalist, cellist, pianist, songwriter and composer from London is unlike any other with her live shows taking the audience on an intimate journey.

Harry Christophers conductor Vivaldi’s Gloria is one of sacred music’s most uplifting choral works and a joyful hymn of praise with moments ranging from festive brilliance to profound sadness. Composed in Venice, probably in 1715, for the choir of the Ospedale della Pietà, its wonderfully sunny nature and distinctive melodies and rhythms gives it an immediate and universal appeal. Bach was a fierce admirer of Vivaldi’s work, and his extraordinarily inventive Mass in G major complements the Gloria perfectly.

The English/Italian classical singer showcases songs from her highly anticipated critically acclaimed debut album, Singing My Dreams, an enchanting collection of classical and classic pieces and original compositions, some featuring lyrics by Carly herself. Singing My Dreams is the personal story of a little girl who fell in love with the MGM musicals; a teenager who sang in the piazzas of Puglia; a student who studied her craft at Tring Park and the Royal Northern College of Music; a rising international star who has sung with and is lauded by, luminaries including Andrea Bocelli, Elaine Paige, David Foster and particularly by her fellow artiste in ‘En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor’, José Carreras. ‘Carly is a wonderful person to work with. I admire her voice, artistry and her charisma. It’s a pleasure for me to sing with her.’ (José Carreras)

Rossini Mosè in Egitto

Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme Haydn Symphony No. 80 in D minor Respighi Adagio con variazioni P. 133 Haydn Symphony No. 97 in C major

Robin Newton conductor This is a rare opportunity to hear Rossini’s Moses opera in the finely crafted original Italian version. It tells the story of the love of a young Jewish girl for the son of the Egyptian Pharaoh at the time of the enslavement of the Israelite minority in Egypt. Among its highlights are the superbly atmospheric opening ‘Scene of the Shadows’, an unforgettable portrait of an entire people plunged in the deepest misery, and the closing scene whose celebrated ‘Prayer’ prefaces the parting of the waves, as Moses leads the Israelites to freedom and their own promised land. A concert performance in Italian with English surtitles. 5.45pm: Pre-concert talk by Richard Osborne (for ticket holders only)

Tickets: £38, £33, £25.50, £15

Nicolas Altstaedt cello/conductor When Joseph Haydn came to Britain, he sparked a Georgian media-frenzy – and he knew that London audiences deserved only the very best. Two of his most exuberant symphonies are at the heart of this concert, including the brilliant No. 97: a sensation in London in 1792, and just as entertaining in 2018! The award-winning Nicholas Altstaedt shares his passion tonight: and plays two delightful showpieces for his own instrument, the cello. Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations is a sparkling celebration of the 18th century by Russia’s supreme master of melody. And as for Respighi’s luscious Adagio con Variazioni: well, just think Puccini without words!
