SPRING EVENTS AT CADOGAN HALL Cadogan Hall’s new spring brochure brings you an extensive mix of contemporary music, orchestral masterpieces, opera, world music and jazz guaranteed to delight any music lover.

The Zurich International Orchestra Series continues in March with the first visit to Cadogan Hall from the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Oslo-born violin virtuoso Henning Kraggerud joins the orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. This spring we are also looking forward to the return of pianist John Lill on 12 May, performing with Moscow State Symphony Orchestra.

The Mariinsky Orchestra returns with the complete score of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Our resident orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic also comes with an enticing line-up of soloists and new for this season are RPO Preludes, a series of chamber concerts, curated and performed by leading musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, on stage before the main concert.

Jazz concerts include a recreation of the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s 1938 Carnegie Hall concert and 100 Years of Jazz in 99 Minutes (both back by popular demand!). We also welcome Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura and blues singer Eric Bibb.

Benjamin Beilman violin Riccardo Minasi conductor LCO welcomes Rome-born period performance specialist Riccardo Minasi, who makes his debut with a London orchestra to conduct Mendelssohn’s Italian, a symphony infused with the light, energy and passion of the Mediterranean.

Mendelssohn was an early champion of Beethoven’s majestic Violin Concerto.

Performing the virtuoso’s solo role is the gifted young American Benjamin Beilman, whose ‘handsome technique, burnished sound, and quiet confidence’ was recently hailed by the New York Times.

The concert opens with the vivid Overture to Médée by Cherubini – the only composer whose talents Beethoven thought matched his own – setting the scene for the tragic, bloody tale.

Before the interval it is joined by ex-Philharmonia Orchestra horn player (and Imperial alumnus) Mark Almond for Glière’s heroic Horn Concerto, and the concert opens with Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens with the massed voices of Imperial College Choir and the Thomas Hardye Singers.

After the concert you can meet the musicians and discover your own inner-hero as you try out some of their instruments in Cadogan Hall’s foyer.

A fundraising concert in aid of Freedom from Torture Wagner Overture to Tannhaüser Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme Brahms Symphony No. 3 Gemma Rosefield cello Stephen Brearley conductor For its seventh concert in support of Freedom from Torture, The Doctors’ Orchestra plays an uncompromisingly romantic programme featuring romanticism’s three central composers.

Brahms’ passionate Third Symphony is thought by many to have sprung from his probably undeclared and certainly unfulfilled love for Clara Schumann while the question ‘What is love?’ is at the heart of Wagner’s opera Tannhaüser.

The Orchestra is joined by the brilliant cellist Gemma Rosefield for Tchaikovsky’s charming but virtuosic Rococo Variations.

Glinka Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture Sibelius Violin Concerto Barber Adagio for Strings Beethoven Symphony No. 7 Eduardo Portal conductor Matthew Trusler violin In no other violin concerto is the soloist’s first note, so delicately dissonant and offbeat, more beautiful, than in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto.

Performed by one of Britain’s leading violinists, Matthew Trusler, this piece demonstrates Sibelius’ passion for the violin and complete understanding of the sound of the instrument.

Led by Spanish maestro Eduardo Portal, the Orchestra opens the concert with the lively overture to Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila.

Barber’s Adagio for Strings has been described as the American anthem of mourning, having been played at notable figure’s funerals.

Closing the concert is Beethoven’s stirring Symphony No. 7, a wonderful blend of orchestral gravitas and swelling tunes, recently used to great effect in the film The King’s Speech.

New to this season is a series of chamber concerts, curated and performed by leading musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. These concerts will take place on the concert stage of Cadogan Hall from 6.15pm, before the main concerts begin at 7.30pm.

Pete Long and his 13 piece big band Plus Joan Viskant Vocals Anthony Kerr Vibes This superb recreation of one of the greatest ever jazz concerts returns to Cadogan Hall following its sold out performances in 2012 and 2014. Goodman’s band included stars such as trumpeter Harry James, drummer Gene Krupa, pianist Teddy Wilson as well as guest stars from the Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestras. It was the first time in America that black and white musicians had shared the concert stage.

At the original concert, the musicians played without amplification and the wonderful acoustic of Cadogan Hall makes it possible for this concert to be presented in the same way.

Handel Messiah

From Paris to New York Handel Messiah The Van Swieten Band Charlotte Beament soprano Anna Harvey mezzo-soprano Jeremy Budd tenor William Gaunt bass Jonathan Williams conductor Ealing Choral Society and the Van Swieten Band, conducted by Jonathan Williams present Handel’s Messiah – one of the best-loved works of the choral repertoire.

First performed during Eastertide in 1742, and written over a period of just 24 days, it explores the coming of the Messiah, Christ’s Passion, Resurrection and Ascension into heaven.

At the end of his manuscript Handel wrote the letters ‘SDG’ (Soli Deo Gloria) meaning ‘To God Alone the Glory’. This inscription, together with the speed of the composition, has encouraged belief that Handel wrote the music in a fervour of divine inspiration.

Ealing Choral Society and the Van Swieten Band are delighted to return to the Hall for a performance of this jubilant work.

Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 is one of the towering masterpieces of the Baroque era. The grandeur of its conception was unprecedented. No other work from the period was written on such a scale, combining stunning choral bravura with the most intimate of solo songs. Anne Boleyn was brought up for a time in France, under the guardianship of Margaret of Austria, who was patron to some of the most famous composers in Europe. The critically acclaimed pianist Eleonora Bekova returns to Cadogan Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of the gifted young conductor Marius Stravinsky in a unique programme of Russian 20th-century music which combines much-loved classics and hidden gems.

Lyadov’s Baba-Yaga opens the concert. It is followed by the UK premiere of Sergey Zhukov’s quietly intense and meditative Piano Concerto Silentium, which was composed especially for Bekova. The evening receives a fitting finale with Prokofiev’s much-loved Fifth Symphony composed in 1944.

Inspired by the events of the Kristallnacht, Tippett’s secular oratorio A Child of Our Time is brought to life by a stellar cast of young soloists and the combined forces of Woking Choral Society and outstanding chamber choir Vox Cordis.

OSP’s leader Francesca Barritt is the soloist in music from the 1993 Steven Spielberg film Schindler’s List, and the evening opens with Ben Palmer’s exciting new choral work, a setting of Czeslaw Milosz’s poem Campo dei Fiori, which juxtaposes the burning of Giordano Bruno in Rome in 1600 and the poet’s experience of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943.

With its hints of opera writing intertwined with beautifully crafted solo arias, the work is neither small nor solemn, nor particularly liturgical.

Scored for two pianos and a harmonium, it has become a core member of the choral repertoire and is popular amongst choirs and audience alike. Join one of London’s leading amateur choruses for a vibrant performance of this glorious work.

The Enid Dust

APRIL

The Enid presents the follow up tour to their critically acclaimed The Bridge Show; Dust is a highly ambitious audio-visual production directed by TV illusionist Simon Drake (Secret Cabaret).

The Enid have received a succession of praise for their work in the last year. Founder Robert John Godfrey was crowned Visionary at the Progressive Music Awards 2014, along with lead vocalist Joe Payne being voted Best Male Vocalist in the 2014 Prog magazine Readers’ Poll.

Dust is the band’s first official release since the highly acclaimed comeback album Invicta in 2012 which triggered an accelerated buzz of interest within the classic rock and prog community.

Malcolm Dome of Prog magazine has described the band’s latest show as ‘The Enid entering the most enticing, engaging and engrossing phase of their career’.

An all-Mozart first half opens with the exhilarating, celebratory Haffner Symphony before Austrian pianist Till Fellner takes to the piano for his iconic compatriot’s Piano Concerto No. 22.

Closing the concert is Bizet’s Symphony in C, a vibrant showpiece demanding the type of virtuosic playing and shimmering string sound that made the Academy’s name.

Valery Gergiev conductor Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra return to Cadogan Hall with a concert performance of Prokofiev’s glorious ballet Romeo and Juliet, in joint celebration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare and the 125th anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev in 2016.

One of the world’s best-loved ballets, Romeo and Juliet is inextricably linked with the Mariinsky company which, under its Soviet name Kirov, gave the Russian premiere in 1940. The original production, overseen by the composer, is still performed.

Bursting with memorable scenes and ravishing melodies, Prokofiev vividly depicts the whole cast of Shakespeare’s characters from the innocent young Juliet and the proud, haughty Capulets to the bustling market scenes where youthful high jinx suddenly turn into deadly combat.

Classical Opera and Ian Page continue their ground-breaking MOZART 250 series with the UK premiere of Niccolò Jommelli’s Il Vologeso, which was first performed 250 years ago on 11 February 1766 at the exquisite Schlosstheater in Ludwigsburg.

Jommelli (1714-1774) was one of the most celebrated opera composers of his day, particularly renowned for the dramatic intensity and emotional realism of his music, and the young Mozart held him in high regard.

The UK’s premier 1920s and 1930s dance band recorded their 40th anniversary concert at Cadogan Hall which has been aired frequently on Sky Arts TV to popular acclaim. The concert includes some of the hot tunes played by both Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington and orchestra, masterpieces from some of the great composers of the American Song Book, such as Irving Berlin and George Gershwin, as well as some of the greatest tunes from the British dance bands of the 1920s and 1930s.

All this is presented with the Orchestra’s inimitable style and panache, together with a good dose of British humour.

Classical Opera has assembled an outstanding cast, comprising some of the most exciting young British artists, for this important and eagerly awaited event.

Music icon Rita Coolidge has won two Grammy® Awards. Her song-styling crosses three genres, rock, pop and jazz, over more than a dozen albums, including 1978’s multiplatinum Anytime... Anywhere. An influential force amid the iconic music that built the pop/rock universe, several of her singles have become classics; We’re All Alone, Higher And Higher and The Way You Do The Things You Do as well as hit collaborations with Kris Kristofferson.

Christopher Warren-Green conductor The final concert of the season features a world premiere in which LCO is joined by participants from Music Junction, the orchestra’s groundbreaking community and outreach programme.

Beethoven’s Overture was written for a play by Goethe commemorating the heroic deeds of Count Egmont in his struggle against tyranny; and it’s easy to hear how Haydn’s Military Symphony got its nickname, its second movement evoking, according to one reviewer, ‘the hellish roar of war’.

We begin with a real rarity – an overture by Beethoven’s contemporary, Charles-Simon Catel, a popular figure in his time and the go-to composer when rousing military music was needed for state ceremonies.

2016 is a year of new projects and milestones as Rita releases her memoir in April and a new album in the summer.

Returning to Cadogan Hall after it sold out in 2013 this show encompasses the history of jazz from its beginnings in Ragtime through to the present day. The six multi-instrumental jazz virtuosi present a highly entertaining journey through the decades taking in everything from New Orleans to Be Bop, Swing to Latin, Hot to Cool, from Chicago and New York to around the world. An A to Z of jazz’s biggest names from Louis Armstrong to Joe Zawinul interspersed with fascinating and humorous stories from the music’s history.

It is, quite simply, one of the most daring and brilliantly executed evenings of jazz entertainment doing the rounds today.

Alexandra Dariescu will impress with Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody based on Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for solo violin. This muchloved work adds depth and dynamic energy to Paganini’s original work and will be electric on the Cadogan Hall stage.

What began as one of Tchaikovsky’s most difficult works to compose subsequently became one of his most well-known, as we hear his masterpiece, Symphony No. 5.

Together, they recreate timeless trio compositions starting with Joaquin Turina’s Fantasia, a passionate Spanish composition, whose tone is then contrasted by tender, concludes romantic Brahms’ Piano Trio. The concert peaks with Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2, the genius of raw emotion.

Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections.

ACCESSIBILITY Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Customers in receipt of disability-related state benefits, and members of our Access Scheme, may be entitled to concessionary ticket prices for some events or a free companion seat. Please contact the Box Office for a form to register for Cadogan Hall’s Access Scheme.

Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically.

However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell.

When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time.

Customers with hearing requirements The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. Please contact a member of staff on arrival to be given an amplification aid.

Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure.
