An Evening with Tom Paxton

Paris-Buenos Aires, Une Histoire D’Amour

With special guests Cathy and Marcy

Tom has had a music career spanning more than 50 years. The five decades have seen the recording of many enduring songs, and thousands of live performances around the world, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2009.

Maria Martinova piano Cyril Garac violin with the special participation of John Standing

“We are all born singing Tom Paxton songs” (Nanci Griffith)

The remarkable duo Martinova – Garac comes to Cadogan Hall for the UK launch of their highly-anticipated album ParisBuenos Aires, une histoire d’amour. Formed in the biggest classical tradition, these two musicians have also established themselves as two of the most emblematic names on the contemporary tango scene. In this program they elegantly combine French impressionist and Argentinean tango music. Legendary British actor John Standing will join the duo, giving voice to poets from the two worlds. This will be a mysterious and exciting journey through the aesthetic complicity between two cities – Paris and Buenos Aires – where music and poetry blend to reveal the pulse of life in all its aspects.

Celebrated amongst his peers and audiences alike, he is one of the most highly regarded, loved, and best known folk singer/ songwriters of his generation. With timeless classics such as The Last Thing On My Mind, Bottle Of Wine and Ramblin’ Boy, he portrays through his songs and his famously generous nature a true desire for justice, and to bring people together. Symphonic Soundscapes – The Music of Prokofiev and Sibelius Prokofiev Symphony No. 1 (Classical) Sibelius Violin Concerto Prokofiev Symphony No. 3

Haydn Cello Concerto No. 1 Haydn Symphony No. 45 (Farewell) Beethoven Symphony No. 8

Alexander Shelley conductor Chloë Hanslip violin

Trey Lee cello Christopher Warren-Green conductor

One of the most naturally gifted of all Russian composers, Sergei Prokofiev once described his musical personality as a mixture of ‘the classical, innovative, motoric, lyrical and grotesque’. Tonight the RPO performs two contrasting pieces and experience two different sides of his personality. Firstly beginning with his delightful Symphony No. 1, its classical and lyrical style combines Prokofiev’s distinctively strong harmonic and melodic style, which is in complete contrast to his bustling Symphony No. 3; full of energetic and vivacious rhythms.

Haydn famously claimed that he was so cut off by his long tenure at the Esterházy family’s estate in rural Hungary that he was ‘forced to become original’. The ‘Farewell’ Symphony was the composer’s subtle plea to his employer to let the orchestra return home to their families, and perhaps it was the sheer quality of the music that persuaded the Prince to release his orchestra. We find Haydn in far more upbeat mood in the First Cello Concerto.

In between the two symphonies we welcome outstanding British violinist Chloë Hanslip to perform Sibelius’ passionate Violin Concerto.

Tickets: £40, £32.50, £25, £15 ENCORE Members: £5 off top 3 prices Series and group discounts available

Unlike Haydn, Beethoven never tied himself to a single patron. His Eighth Symphony is one of his most delightful works, one that the great writer and polemicist George Bernard Shaw dared to declare ‘better than the Seventh’.

From Duke’s Take The ‘A’ Train to Dizzy Gillespie’s Manteca (a mix of Cuban rhythm and Manhattan magic) via Artie Shaw, Charlie Parker and many more. ‘Echoes of Ellington were in scintillating form and if the standing ovations were anything to go by the large audience also wants more of the same… and pretty soon too’ Arts and Culture Magazine ‘Gillespiana supplies a series of controlled detonations in which instrumental flair goes hand in hand with joie de vivre.’ The Times.

Part of Choral at Cadogan 2016-17

2017 marks the centenary of the original first lady of song. Award-winning jazz vocalist and Radio 2 presenter Clare Teal explores the many facets of Ella Fitzgerald – from her early days with Chick Webb at the height of the Swing Era, to her work in the 50s and 60s with Norman Granz celebrating the Great American Songwriters and culminating in surely the most treasured songbook series ever recorded.

Victoria Nigra sum Palestrina Trahe me post te Victoria Trahe me post te Chant Tota pulchra es Palestrina Osculetur me Victoria Nigra sum: Vadam et circuibo Chant Nigra sum sed Formosa Palestrina Nigra sum sed Formosa Lassus Veni dilecti Chant Dum esset rex Victoria Vidi speciosam Ensemble Plus Ultra Just one day after Valentine’s Day, the award-winning Ensemble Plus Ultra makes its Cadogan Hall debut with a selection of ‘Song of Songs’ settings, alongside readings of Shakespeare sonnets in a celebration of love. With music by composers including Tomás Luis de Victoria, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and Orlande de Lassus, this programme showcases some of the most beautiful and erotic of scriptural texts (the Song of Songs being essentially a love poem), set in a variety of styles.

Join Clare Teal and her mini big band (comprising the finest jazz musicians in the land) plus a special guest for this special celebration of Ella’s versatility – from small band to big band, from the warmth of her studio sessions to the joyful exuberance of Ella’s live performances. Beethoven Piano Trio No. 11 (Kakadu) Beethoven Triple Concerto Beethoven Symphony No. 4 Lorenza Borrani violin/director Luise Buchberger cello Kristian Bezuidenhout piano From early in his career, Beethoven made the piano trio very much his own. The youthful ‘Kakadu’ variations show his genius for taking a banal melody and sending it up with a sequence of brilliant variations. Beethoven took things a stage further when he set a piano trio against an orchestra in his Triple Concerto. Written a couple of years later, Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony finds him at his most delectably Haydnesque.

Completed in the 86th and last year of the composer’s life, these glorious songs express both the composer’s passion for the soprano voice and a mellow acceptance of life’s approaching end. Berlioz’s opera Beatrice and Benedict was also a late work but this time one crackling with wit, humour and vivacity. Rachmaninov’s first symphony, by contrast, was an early work whose disastrous first performance caused the composer to suffer a nervous breakdown but which has subsequently come to be recognised as a thrilling work of true genius.

ACCESSIBILITY Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Customers in receipt of disability-related state benefits, and members of our Access Scheme, may be entitled to concessionary ticket prices for some events or a free companion seat. Please contact the Box Office for a form to register for Cadogan Hall’s Access Scheme. Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities. The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time. Customers with hearing requirements The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. Please contact a member of staff on arrival to be given an amplification aid. Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure. To request a free copy please call the Box Office and ask to be added to our regular lists. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.
