With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

Southbank Sinfonia Stephen Bell conductor Southbank Sinfonia is taking off in a time machine and we’re inviting all intrepid time-travellers for the trip as we explore the countries, continents and characters that helped shape the music of today. Acclaimed cellist and conductor Dmitry Yablonsky performs a special birthday recital, joined by pianist Farhad Badalbeyli. Fayrfax Gloria from Missa Tecum principium Tallis Lamentations 1 Fayrfax Credo from Missa Tecum principium Fayrfax Sanctus from Missa Tecum principium Tallis Lamentations 2 Fayrfax Agnus Dei from Missa Tecum principium

Brahms Variations on a Theme of Haydn Barber Violin Concerto Dvorˇák Symphony No.9 (From the New World)

Peter Phillips director It is a very rare treat indeed to be able to hear the whole of Fayrfax’s Missa Tecum principium in one sitting. Newly edited for The Tallis Scholars by Tim Symons, this is one of the most substantial and virtuoso mass-settings of the entire period. Written for Christmas, the Missa Tecum principium presents its chant 12 times, each with a different rhythm, culminating in the most perfectly beautiful Agnus Dei in the whole repertoire. In between these colossal movements of Fayrfax the choir will sing something more compact, but just as intense, in the two Lamentations of Tallis.

Michael Sanderling conductor Sarah Chang violin The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the oldest and most respected symphony orchestras in Germany with a long history of success under some of the world’s leading conductors, including Kurt Masur, Herbert Kegel, Michel Plasson, Marek Janowski and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. Sarah Chang is recognised as one of the world’s great violinists. Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of eight she has performed with the greatest orchestras, conductors and accompanists internationally in a career spanning more than two decades.

NSO Chorus & Childrens’ Chorus St Paul’s Sinfonia Don’t miss the chance to see the first complete performance of this work by the composer of some of the world’s best-loved operas – La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Turandot… Discover this fascinating work, with the ‘lost’ last act, by the young composer ‘on the road to genius’. Its passionate story has much in common with Carmen. The distinguished cast is led by John Hudson, who has regularly sung the major Puccini tenor roles for ENO, WNO and Scottish Opera; by Mary Plazas, recently a sensational Madam Butterfly at ENO and by Antonia Sotgiu, whose current roles include Amneris and Carmen at the RAH (also for WNO). Nicholas Jenkins conducts and Tony Baker directs the team that presented last season’s Mireille. ‘Extraordinary quality one has no right to expect from a modest-sized company’... ‘World-class singing’. Dimitri Maslennikov cello Grzegorz Nowak conductor Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, from his opera Prince Igor, are amongst his most famous pieces, full of exotic melodies and vibrant orchestration. Cellist Dimitri Maslennikov has a special affinity for Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a delightful set of variations on an elegant theme inspired by Mozart. While living in America, Czech composer Dvorˇák was enchanted by the music he heard there, declaring: ‘These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America’. For his Ninth Symphony, Dvorˇák emulated this style, while also recalling the music of his homeland. The result is his most popular symphony, its famous Largo just one of many glorious moments. Tickets £40, £32.50, £25, £15

Joe Jackson and the Bigger Band

Friday 9 November, 7.30pm

Lambchop

Featuring Regina Carter These two concerts are part of Joe’s European tour to promote his new album The Duke. The show will consist of music from the album (Joe’s unique interpretations of Duke Ellington classics) and original songs taken from throughout Joe’s own 30-year writing and recording career, from Look Sharp to Rain. The six-piece ensemble – called The Bigger Band to set it apart from the small bands Joe has toured with over the last several years – features acclaimed jazz violinist Regina Carter, who made an important contribution to the album. Two former JJ band members will also be returning: percussionist Sue Hadjopoulos and vocalist/ multi-instrumentalist Allison Cornell. The remaining members are Jesse Murphy (bass, vocals, and tuba), Adam Rogers (guitar) and Nate Smith (drums).

Long standing, Nashville-based music pioneers Lambchop, arguably the most consistently brilliant and unique American group to emerge during the 1990s, return to London for a performance at Cadogan Hall on Friday 9th November. Their unclassifiable hybrid of country, soul, jazz, and avant-garde noise seemed at one time or another to drink from every conceivable tributary of contemporary music, its Baroque beauty all held together by the surreal lyrical wit and droll vocal presence of frontman Kurt Wagner.

The show will run for approximately two hours and there will be no opening act.

Ignatz Waghalter: The Lost Romantic

Chloë Hanslip violin Christoph Koenig conductor He may have been overshadowed by Wagner, but without Weber the history of opera would be very different. Weber’s Der Freischütz, with its atmospheric Overture, is considered the first important German Romantic opera – and had a huge impact on Wagner himself. Brahms and Wagner were rivals, splitting the musical world with their different approaches to composition, yet few can now resist the sunny charm of the Violin Concerto by Brahms. With its lyrical opening movement, exquisite, singing Adagio and vigorous finale, the Concerto is an ideal showcase for the talents of Chloë Hanslip. Dvorˇák’s Eighth Symphony is one of his most joyous, full of Bohemian folk-tunes and orchestral colour.

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.1 for Piano, Trumpet and Strings Delius The Walk to the Paradise Garden Sibelius Symphony No.5 Natasha Paremski piano Mike Allen trumpet Rory Macdonald conductor This delectable programme opens with the Tallis Fantasia by Vaughan Williams with its majestic theme of the English Renaissance meets the pre-war innocence of early 20th-century England. In the fascinating Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings by Shostakovich, the piano dominates, but both soloists shine with quick-fire exchanges and rhythmic verve. The Walk to the Paradise Garden is a gloriously seductive work, its sumptuous orchestration dripping with nostalgia.

Mick’s career spans five decades and takes in some of the most important names in rock ‘n’ roll history. After standing in for Eric Clapton at a Bluesbreakers’ gig a year later John Mayall was looking for a guitarist and at only 17 Mick was touring with Mayall’s legendary band. From there he became a member of The Rolling Stones, where he stayed for half a decade, contributing his trademark vibrato slide and song writing skills to numerous hit albums including Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. In his solo career Mick has worked on soundtracks and film scores, appeared with Mike Oldfield and recorded with Bob Dylan. In 1979 he released his first solo material, an album mixing rock, jazz and Latinflavoured blues and he continued touring, performing again with John Mayall and Eric Clapton and recording with The Rolling Stones. Now playing with a line-up of longtime friends and musicians this is a concert you do not want to miss.

From an early age, Ralph began his career by hitch-hiking around Europe with his guitar, emulating his hero Woody Guthrie. In the mid 60s he worked at a Cornish campsite, being maintenance man by day, entertainer by night, where he graced the stage at the ‘Folk Cottage’, a tiny barn in Cornwall that hosted an impromptu club, before eventually settling on the ‘streets of London’. During this period, Nick Drake’s last public performance was supporting Ralph at Epsom college. It was in 1969 that Ralph came to widespread attention though, thanks to an appearance at the Cambridge Folk Festival where all the audience sang along to the now classic anthem Streets Of London, thus launching a long term career penning and performing beautiful acoustic and folk politically conscious songs.
