PINCHAS ZUKERMAN S U M M E R M U S I C F E S T I VA L The illustrious violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in what promises to be an exceptional series of concerts, with great works hand-picked for each programme. The festival culminates in a concert featuring the last three symphonies by Mozart: three masterworks displaying different facets of the composer at the height of his powers.

On the Rossini day one of the three lecturers is Richard Peirson, senior repetiteur at the English National Opera who will discuss The Barber of Seville as well as his work behind the scenes at the ENO. The highlight of the Donizetti day will be the masterclass led by internationally acclaimed soprano, Nelly Miricioiu. She will talk about her iconic roles in the great opera houses and work with some rising stars on Donizetti arias.

Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra Part of Zurich International Orchestra Series 2013-14 Kodály Dances of Galánta Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 1 Beethoven Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral) Barry Douglas piano Andrés Orozco-Estrada conductor The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra is one of the most distinguished orchestras on the Austrian music scene and tonight performs a stunning programme of classical masterpieces.

Barry Douglas’ career was launched in 1986 when he won the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition held in Moscow, the first non-Russian to do so in nearly 30 years. He plays Rachmaninov’s First Piano Concerto, an extraordinarily accomplished work, written while the composer was still a teenager.

A fundraising concert in aid of Freedom from Torture

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 Rachmaninov Symphony No. 2 Ronan Magill piano Stephen Brearley conductor The Doctors’ Orchestra, playing once again in support of Freedom from Torture, presents two of Rachmaninov’s monumental but much loved works.

Held by some to be the most technically demanding of all piano concertos, Rachmaninov’s Third deploys bravura pianism not for its own sake but as a means of creating a work which is by turns thrilling, wistful and tender. Ronan Magill, tonight’s soloist, made his United States debut with it and his Rachmaninov has been praised for its ‘marvellous deep melodic line’.

Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, unlike his First, was a triumph at its first performance and has remained a favourite with orchestras and audiences ever since.

Classical Opera presents its first performance of Mozart’s magnificent late opera, allegedly written within 18 days during the composer’s final months. For a long time dismissed as the black sheep among Mozart’s mature operas, La clemenza di Tito is only now becoming recognised as a masterpiece, and with its combination of nobility and passion, virtuosity and economy of gesture, it can be seen to represent the apotheosis of the 18th-century opera seria.

In tonight’s rare live appearance the choir presents a programme of choral music old and new, sacred and secular including John Rutter favourites.

Formed in 1981 by their director John Rutter, the Cambridge Singers were brought together for the express purpose of making recordings.

The nucleus of the group was originally provided by former members of the chapel choir of Clare College, Cambridge (where John Rutter was Director of Music from 1975-79), supplemented by former members of other collegiate choirs. Today the choir is one of a number of freelance professional choirs on the London circuit, but unique in that its primary activity is still recording. Former members of the choir include such luminaries as Mark Padmore and Gerald Finley.

Brahms, though deeply affected by the deaths of his mentor Robert Schumann and later of his own mother, intended his Requiem not as a personal memorial but as a work of healing for all mankind. Undoubtedly his choral masterpiece, it is not a traditional requiem, but a series of settings of German Bible passages.

Ealing Choral Society joins forces again with Sinfonia Britannica under the direction of Jonathan Williams to present this wonderful work.

Sir Roger Norrington has changed the very way we hear the music of the Classical period and as he enters his ninth decade, his performances are as revelatory as ever.

He celebrates his 80th birthday this year by taking his Zurich Chamber Orchestra on a European tour, conducting Mozart’s first and last symphonies.

Ingrid Fuzjko Hemming returns to Cadogan Hall for a special one off performance in aid of animal welfare charities. Japan’s legendary pianist performs with special guest Vasko Vassilev, Concertmaster of the Royal Opera House and Bulgaria’s finest violinist.

The orchestra is joined by the award-winning American pianist Jonathan Biss, appearing for the first time at Cadogan Hall to perform Mozart’s most melodic and eloquent piano concerto, whose famous, sublime slow movement was used in the film Elvira Madigan.

Written for Bach’s first Good Friday in Leipzig in April 1724, the St John is the shorter and more intimate of his two surviving Passion settings. The London Chamber Orchestra perform an exciting programme of new and old in this, their concluding concert of the season.

Continuing the centenary celebrations of Benjamin Britten, the orchestra pay tribute to the composer with a performance of his much loved Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra – which has been the inspiration for this season’s LCO education project, Music Junction. The final movement of a new LCO commission, by Cheryl Frances-Hoad will see over 100 young people join the orchestra to showcase their work.

The evening will also feature Brahms’ Symphony No 2, its meandering melodies beaming with joy as it moves towards an exhilarating finale.

GETTING TO CADOGAN HALL The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport.

Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections.

Sloane Square Underground Two minutes walk Upon exiting Sloane Square Station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. (You will see Cadogan Hall’s tower immediately before you). Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street to the Hall.

Bus Sloane Street one minute walk Frequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street. Bus services include numbers 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 319, 360 and c1.

Taxi Rank Sloane Square one minute walk 8 pt Taxis are numerous in the area and there is a taxi rank located on Sloane Square opposite the Underground Station.

Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Companions of disabled customers are entitled to a free seat when assisting disabled customers at Cadogan Hall. Please note that companion seats not sold 48 hours prior to any given performance will be released for general sale.

Data Protection When making a booking your details will be recorded on to our database and may be used

by Cadogan Hall and our associates to inform you of forthcoming events. If you do not wish to receive this information please inform the Box Office at the time of booking.

Conditions of sale Please note that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded. Only one discount is available per booking. Children under five will not be admitted to Cadogan Hall except for family shows, where children over the age of one must have their own seats. We reserve the right to remove children from the auditorium if they are not well behaved. Price band structure reflects the level of comfort and clarity of view. We regret we cannot guarantee unrestricted view at all times due to the varying nature of performances.

Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell.

When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time.

Customers with hearing requirements The Box Office counter is fitted with a loop system to aid customers with any hearing impairment. The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. You will need to use an amplification aid.

Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure. To request a free copy please call the Box Office and ask to be added to our regular lists. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.
