CELEBRATING 10 YEARS June 2014 represents a significant month for Cadogan Hall. It was in June 2004 that the hall first opened its doors to the nation's concert going public. That so much has happened in those 10 years is staggering.

Following the hall’s inaugural performance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and guest soprano Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Cadogan Hall has presented over 2600 live concerts performed by tens of thousands of gifted artists and musicians to over 1.4 million concertgoers. Combined broadcasts, including the internationally renowned BBC Proms Chamber Music series, have allowed millions more people all over the world to enjoy and participate in live music with us.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Schubert Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme Bizet Symphony in C Dimitri Maslennikov cello Alessandro Fabrizi conductor This programme boasts not one but two symphonies – and while Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 is famously incomplete, its two movements are full of memorable melodies and nuanced orchestral writing. Bizet’s Symphony in C opens with great energy and panache, and features a wistful Adagio, rustic Scherzo and effervescent Finale. In Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, the cello and orchestra explore a theme inspired by one of the composer’s idols, Mozart. At the work’s premiere, even Liszt was impressed... This concert will be dedicated to a project of rare scientific quality entitled ‘Music and Neuroscience’.

One hundred years ago, in 1914, Alan Kirby founded the Croydon Philharmonic Choir. For the next 40 years he conducted the choir, building up a fine reputation. The choir has continued to flourish and now boasts over 100 enthusiastic members of diverse ages and backgrounds. David Gibson, Music Director since 1999, is a dynamic and inspirational leader. He is also the Musical Director of the New London Sinfonia, our orchestra for this occasion. Under David’s encouraging and meticulous leadership the choir consistently achieves high standards. Gen Li piano Martin André conductor Martin André, internationally renowned conductor, directs the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra in an evening featuring awardwinning music and the winning concerto of the 2014 Trinity Laban Soloists’ Competition. Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra showcases the height of his folkloristic style, and Panufnik’s patriotic symphony pays tribute to Poland’s Christian history. Following his virtuosic performance at the Soloists’ Competition, Trinity Laban pianist Gen Li takes to the stage with Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, a lively, lyrical work and one of the most popular of the composer’s five piano concertos.

In the opening concert, Zukerman performs J.S. Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor. An exemplar of the Baroque concerto, the faultless melodic lines and perfectly balanced structure of the work are a given; what draws audiences to the work, however, is the yearning melancholy of the violin, which comes across in every bar of the concerto. Schoenberg’s string sextet Verklärte Nacht, his earliest major work, and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (Italian), conclude a programme spanning nearly two hundred years.

Take a step back into 1920s New York City and through the doors of Harlem’s hottest nightclub, The Cotton Club! Swinging at The Cotton Club is an actionpacked show celebrating the music, dance, and songs of The Cotton Club, New York City’s famous nightclub of the 1920s and ‘30s. Performances by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Fats Waller would have had the club swinging – whilst dancers such as Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers lit-up the stage with their breath-taking routines. Despite critical reception the work’s popularity has increased with time, and truly comes to life when performed by two exceptional soloists. The concerto is framed by Beethoven’s Overture to his ballet The Creatures of Prometheus, on which the fourth movement of the later Eroica Symphony is based, and Elgar’s ever-popular ‘Enigma’ Variations.

The Summer Music Festival concludes with a programme dedicated to the last three symphonies by Mozart: three masterworks displaying different facets of the composer at the height of his powers. Listeners will be brought on a journey through the majestic opening of Symphony No. 39, the contrasting darkness of Symphony No. 40 and the masterful ‘Jupiter’ Symphony, for which the composer reserved all of his greatest resources of composition.
The London Phoenix Orchestra returns to Cadogan Hall for a colourful programme of 20th-century classics, including Prokofiev’s towering Fifth Symphony and Bartók’s rhapsodic Violin Concerto No. 1. They are joined by multiple award-winning Canadian violinist Sadie Fields.

Dan Ludford-Thomas conductor Nico de Villiers piano/organ Nicholas Bootiman viola The atmospheric and lyrical Luminosity, in 7 movements for viola, organ, the Indian stringed tanpura and chorus, takes the listener through the 'transcendent beauty of creation', using all the forces to create moments of true stillness and overwhelming intensity. The 5 colourful movements of Vaughan Williams’ In Windsor Forest are lively and lyrical, while the melodic beauty of his Serenade to Music reduced Rachmaninoff to tears. McDowall’s Four Piano Solos, combine rhythmic vitality with atmospheric stillness, from the bustle of New York to an impressionistic soundscape of Venice. One of his last major works, first heard in Vienna in 1801, Haydn’s oratorio The Seasons built on the success of The Creation. Four cantatas describe the changing seasons from spring through to winter and the daily life of peasants in the composer’s Austrian homeland. From ploughing and sowing, tending the sheep and welcoming the summer sun, to hunting, harvesting and enjoying the fruits of the vine, Haydn celebrates the pastoral world and its Creator in music full of vitality and imagination. This performance will be sung in English.

Trinity Laban’s Saturday music department for young people (DfE Centre for Advanced Training) presents its end-of-year celebration and Prizegiving ceremony.
Perhaps one of the most loved pieces in the entire choral repertoire, Verdi’s thrilling and moving masterpiece is performed by the forces of the Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra and St Albans Bach Choir in their first joint venture together. Combined with four hugely talented soloists, an evening of memorable music is promised.
This showcase of large ensembles features more than two hundred students aged 10 – 19 in choirs and orchestras including Intermediate Strings, Concertante, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Fast Fiddlers, Big Band, Equal Voice Choir and Four Part Choir. Come and hear a range of music, from the sacred to the light-hearted, performed by these exciting young musicians.

This year marks the 300th anniversary of C. P. E. Bach, second son of J. S. Bach and the most musically rebellious of the younger Bachs. When Mozart wrote, ‘Bach is the father, we the children’, he was referring not to J. S. Bach but C. P. E. Bach. Baroque violinist Rachel Podger is joined by musical friends in a programme to explore the weird and wonderful world of this fascinating musician. At its core is the extraordinary and unprecedented C minor Trio Sonata – an instrumental dialogue between a ‘sanguine’ man and a ‘melancholic’, in which each tries to persuade the other to change his mood.

Richard Strauss was just 20 when he composed his Suite – and steeped in the conservative musical traditions of his horn-player father, who revered Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven above all. It’s a legacy present here in the young Strauss’s music, but developed and transformed into something altogether more rich and strange. Clarinettist Michael Collins and his ensemble London Winds set Strauss and his favourite composer, Mozart, side by side, presenting their very different takes on the 18th-century ‘Harmonie’ ensemble of wind instruments, and revealing the early seeds of Strauss’s signature lyricism that would eventually flower in Der Rosenkavalier.

Here the group celebrates the 80th birthdays of two major British composers – Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger is the soloist in Birtwistle’s Endless Parade, whose dark, maze-like landscape is matched by the languorous vistas of Honegger. The anniversary celebrations of C. P. E. Bach continue with the spiky, brooding textures of his Symphony in B minor.

Prior to her appearances at the Royal Albert Hall later this week and at the Last Night of the Proms, Dutch violinist Janine Jansen performs as a chamber musician alongside pianist Itamar Golan and violinist-turnedconductor Sakari Oramo. Although a familiar face on the podium, Oramo is only now making his Proms debut as a violinist. Two richly coloured works by Prokofiev contrast with the Fantasie for violin and piano in which Schubert leans towards the sublime, less than a year before his death.

Having joined Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé earlier this season for Elgar’s Sea Pictures, mezzo-soprano Alice Coote returns for a recital with pianist Julius Drake. Her programme of German songs includes Strauss’s Eight Poems from ‘Letzte Blätter’ – some of the very earliest and loveliest of the 200 or so songs he composed over his lifetime. Dedicated to his wife Pauline and a gift to her on their wedding day, the Op. 27 Lieder are also among Strauss’s most heartfelt. For Wolf, inspiration came more from literature: poems by the gentle pastoralist Mörike and the philosopher of emotion Goethe inspired him to some of his most expressive musical extremes.

BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Louis Schwizgebel made his concerto debut at the Proms earlier this season and now returns for a programme of chamber music. He is joined by the Royal String Quartet for a concert that concludes with Richard Strauss’s extraordinary Metamorphosen – heard here in the string septet form in which Strauss originally drafted it, before he expanded it for an ensemble of 23 solo strings. Alongside it is a rarely heard curiosity – Mahler’s contemplative Piano Quartet movement, the tantalising torso of a work never completed.
Celebrating his 80th birthday this year and the subject of one of this season’s Proms Plus Composer Portraits, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is one of the greats of contemporary British music. This programme chosen by the composer himself explores his wide-ranging sound-worlds, from the sleek and glittering chamber textures of A Mirror of Whitening Light (completed in 1977, shortly after his move to Orkney) to the confrontational music drama of Revelation and Fall. London Sinfonietta Principal Cellist Tim Gill is the soloist in Linguae ignis’s writhing plainchant melodies, and Sian Edwards returns to conduct, following her Proms Saturday Matinee appearance last year.

Along with fellow Lancastrian composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Sir Harrison Birtwistle celebrates his 80th birthday this year. The Proms marks the occasion with a concert from one of the UK’s leading new music ensembles, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. The group’s relationship with Birtwistle’s music is a long one, and here it performs three of the composer’s classic early works. Each explores the spatial dramatisation of music, playing aural games with the audience and exposing them to intriguing and unfamiliar textures, while never neglecting the ever-unfolding melody that is at the core of all Birtwistle’s music.
This year’s focus on William Walton wouldn’t be complete without his witty, genre-bending ‘entertainment’ Façade. Walton’s first big success, the work sets poems by his friend and patron Edith Sitwell to create a sequence of colourful, whimsical and piquant numbers for chamber ensemble and reciters. The whimsical side of Shostakovich is also represented, in his Four Waltzes. Arranged from the composer’s earlier film scores, they range from the good-humoured ‘Spring Waltz’, the faux naïf ‘Waltz-Scherzo’ and the charmingly kitsch ‘Barrel Organ Waltz’.

Waltz from ‘Faust’ Benjamin Grosvenor piano There will be no interval He may only just have turned 22, but pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is already a Proms regular. The British pianist returns for his first Proms Chamber Music concert, performing a mixed programme with a dance theme pulsing through it. He explores the waltz from the contrasting perspectives of Ravel and Liszt, exchanging bladed impressionism for dizzying virtuosity, while Mompou’s Paisajes transports us to Barcelona, offering an evocative vision of a city from which the composer had been distanced for many years. The contrast of nocturnal scurrying and warm radiance suggested the title for Judith Weir’s new commission, written specially for Grosvenor. GETTING TO CADOGAN HALL The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections.
Sloane Square Underground Two minutes walk Upon exiting Sloane Square Station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. (You will see Cadogan Hall’s tower immediately before you). Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street to the Hall. Bus Sloane Street one minute walk Frequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street. Bus services include numbers 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 319, 360 and c1. Taxi Rank Sloane Square one minute walk 8 pt Taxis are numerous in the area and there is a taxi rank located on Sloane Square opposite the Underground Station.
Parking A limited number of bays are available on Sloane Terrace, Wilbraham Place and Sedding Street after 6.30pm. Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Companions of disabled customers are entitled to a free seat when assisting disabled customers at Cadogan Hall. Please note that companion seats not sold 48 hours prior to any given performance will be released for general sale.

Concessions and student tickets Where general concessions are available this is defined as under-16s, full time students, senior citizens and persons out of work. For availability, please call the Box Office on 020 7730 4500. Group discounts Cadogan Hall offers generous discounts for groups of six or more. Discounts vary according to event so please call 020 7730 5744 for further information or to make a group booking. Data Protection When making a booking your details will be recorded on to our database and may be used by Cadogan Hall and our associates to inform you of forthcoming events. If you do not wish to receive this information please inform the Box Office at the time of booking. Conditions of sale Please note that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded. Only one discount is available per booking. Children under five will not be admitted to Cadogan Hall except for family shows, where children over the age of one must have their own seats. We reserve the right to remove children from the auditorium if they are not well behaved. Price band structure reflects the level of comfort and clarity of view. We regret we cannot guarantee unrestricted view at all times due to the varying nature of performances.
Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities. The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time. Customers with hearing requirements The Box Office counter is fitted with a loop system to aid customers with any hearing impairment. The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. You will need to use an amplification aid. Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure. To request a free copy please call the Box Office and ask to be added to our regular lists. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.
