Gaude Gloriosa Once again, Choral at Cadogan is proud to be presenting a glorious series of concerts by some of the best names in choral singing. New to the British choral scene are Vox Luminis, an outstanding group from Belgium whose recording of Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien has received several prestigious awards, notably the Gramophone ‘Recording of the Year (2012)’. If you are looking for a new group to follow, this concert is not to be missed. We are also delighted that John Rutter’s Cambridge Singers join us for a rare live performance of some of Rutter’s favourite works, which promises to be a real treat. We have two programmes dedicated to British choral traditions this season – Stile Antico celebrates the remarkable legacy of the Tudor Church Music edition, first published in 1922 by the Carnegie UK Trust, with masterpieces by Taverner, Tallis, Gibbons and White along with Byrd’s exquisite five-part Mass, while The Sixteen juxtapose the old with the new by showcasing Tallis’ Tunes for Archbishop Parker’s Psalter alongside music by MacMillan, Tippett and Britten. The Tallis Scholars offer two widely contrasting programmes: the first, a collection of Peter Phillips’ favourite works in celebration of his 60th birthday in a concert given on the day itself, and the second, a thought-provoking and beautiful collection of works designed to remember the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The BBC Singers team up with members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Karabits to perform a recently rediscovered Passion written by C.P.E. Bach. And to celebrate Christmas this year, we are joined by Temple Church Choir singing A Ceremony of Carols along with other Christmas treats to get you in the mood for the festive season. We look forward to welcoming you to what will be a special year.

Peter introduces and explains his choice from the stage, but the crowning glory is surely Tallis’ Gaude gloriosa, a work of famed length and complexity, a colossal architectural construction. By the final pages, which peak on the highest note in the entire Tudor repertoire, listeners (and singers) feel as if they have just completed the journey of a lifetime. The preceding remainder of the programme builds up to this masterpiece at the highest level.

In 1922, the Trust inaugurated the Tudor Church Music edition – a series of hugely influential volumes, unearthing a wealth of extraordinary music that had languished unperformed for centuries. Stile Antico celebrates this remarkable legacy with a programme drawn entirely from these publications, including masterpieces by Taverner, Tallis, Gibbons and White. Crowning the programme is the exquisite five-part Mass by William Byrd, whose modern reputation as the greatest composer of the English Renaissance was founded on these pioneering editions.

The choir’s home is the historic and beautiful Temple Church in London, 800 years ago the regal chapel to the Knights Templar. The centrepiece of this festive programme is Britten’s delightful A Ceremony of Carols. Alongside this masterpiece, the Temple Church Choir sings a programme ranging from beautiful settings of Ave Maria by Elgar and Bruckner, and Byrd’s exhilarating Vigilate, to contemporary arrangements of traditional carols.

Critics have also commented on the ensemble’s enthusiasm for sharing their passion for early music with their audience. Lionel Meunier has themed tonight’s programme around the Stabat Mater (Hymn to Mary) and combines seldom heard works with arguably the most famous setting of all by Scarlatti. Next to Lotti’s celebrated Cruxifixus for 8 voices, the audience has the opportunity to discover two rarely performed Lamentations. The first originates from the 8th century, and is performed in old French. The second by little known composer Allessandro della Ciaia from Sienna, the Lamentation Virginis in depositione Filii de Cruce, written in 1666. In this piece, Mary’s lament is interrupted by a chorus of Angels singing stanzas from the Stabat Mater poem, perfectly bridging the first half with the centrepiece of the programme – Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater. In this final piece the emotionally charged text finds one of its finest musical settings, expressed through a combination of extreme harmony and poetically tender passages. This promises to be an evening of Italian Baroque music at its finest.

A n E v ening with John Rutter Friday 14 March, 7.30pm John Rutter director In tonight’s rare live appearance the choir presents a programme of choral music old and new, sacred and secular, including John Rutter favourites. Formed in 1981 by their director John Rutter, the Cambridge Singers were brought together for the express purpose of making recordings. The nucleus of the group was originally provided by former members of the chapel choir of Clare College, Cambridge (where John Rutter was Director of Music from 1975—79), supplemented by former members of other collegiate choirs. Today the choir is one of a number of freelance professional choirs on the London circuit, but unique in that its primary activity is still recording. Former members of the choir include such luminaries as Mark Padmore and Gerald Finley.

Bach’s 20 children – was one of the foremost composers of the 18th century, though now he is almost completely overshadowed by the reputation of his father. A composer in all sorts of genres, both sacred and secular, his setting of the St John Passion, long thought lost, was re-discovered a few years ago in a Ukrainian library. In the year marking the 300th anniversary of C.P.E. Bach’s birth, tonight’s conductor Kirill Karabits performs his own new edition of this missing work, giving audiences an unmissable opportunity to hear a piece probably not heard since its first performance in 1784.

These come either from the tradition of the Armed Man (L’homme armé), or are based on a chanson actually describing a battle (La batalla). The peaceful element of the programme is provided partly by two movements from Victoria’s peerless 6-voice Requiem Mass and partly by some deeply moving funeral motets: Tavener’s work was sung at the funeral of Princess Diana; Mouton’s at the funeral of Anne of Brittany; and Lobo’s at the funeral of Philip II of Spain. In Pärt’s beautiful The Woman with the Alabaster Box, Christ refers to his own burial.
