Once again Choral at Cadogan is proud to be presenting a wonderful series of concerts by some of the best names in choral singing. BBC Singers and the award-winning viol consort Fretwork open the series with works by two composers from the late Tudor and early Jacobean era set alongside two major works from living composers. This season The Tallis Scholars present two widely contrasting programmes: I have put together the first programme, Metamorphosis, to show how composers from three separate traditions interpreted the same texts: Catholic, Anglican and Russian Orthodox. Our second programme marks Arvo Pärt’s 80th birthday, in which we will perform some of his most effective tintinnabuli compositions alongside other Tallis Scholars favourites, including Allegri’s Miserere. We are delighted to welcome three groups for their first appearance in the series. Orfeó Català, who are considered one of the symbols of Catalan culture, will give a lunchtime concert of Catalan treats – music by Enric Granados, Pau Casals, Toldrà, Montsalvatge will demonstrate the remarkable legacy of this territory. From closer to home come Andrew Carwood and his superb ensemble The Cardinall’s Musick to perform a programme based around the Psalms of David. Gothic Voices will return to the British choral scene with a bang performing a programme of music dating from the 12th Century right up to the present day with a World Premiere by Andrew Smith. And it will be a delight to have the Choir of Westminster Abbey with us again to set the mood for Christmas with a seasonal mixture of renaissance and modern favourites. I look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be yet another special season of choral masterpieces at Cadogan Hall.

BBC Singers and Fretwork Voices and Viols The English consort song, in which voices and viols intertwine, was at its zenith in the works of William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons, and in this concert the award-winning viol consort Fretwork teams up with the BBC Singers to perform works by these two composers from the late Tudor and early Jacobean era. Sacred and secular 17th century music sits alongside two major works from living composers: Thea Musgrave’s Winter Words sets powerfully emotional poems about man’s inhumanity to man, and Nico Muhly’s My Days takes words from Psalm 39, echoing a setting of the same text by Gibbons.

The Tallis Scholars Metamorphosis We welcome back The Tallis Scholars in a programme that Peter Phillips has chosen to show how composers from three separate traditions interpreted the same texts: Catholic, Anglican and Russian Orthodox. It is interesting to hear how the sacred mood is so similar between the Renaissance and Modern composers, yet is achieved by quite different stylistic means. Once more The Tallis Scholars demonstrate their spectacular versatility.

The Choir of Westminster Abbey Nova, Nova The Choir of Westminster Abbey is renowned as one of the finest choirs of its type. Famous throughout the world for its performances at the great state and Royal occasions which take place in the Abbey, the Choir also undertakes an extensive programme of concerts, broadcasts and recordings, in addition to singing the daily choral services. In this rare London performance away from the Abbey, the Choir presents a rich and varied selection of Christmas music, from Renaissance masterpieces by Byrd, Gibbons and Tallis to contemporary carols by Matthew Martin and John Rutter. The centrepiece of the programme is Poulenc’s exquisite set of miniatures depicting scenes from the Nativity story Quatre motets pour le temps de NoÍl.

The Cardinall’s Musick Psalms of David The Psalms of David have provided inspiration for countless generations of composers. Sung several times a day during services in the Catholic rite and at the centre of Anglican Mattins and Evensong, they contain all human emotion, from pain and loss to rejoicing and exultation. This programme contrasts European composers including Allegri’s famous Miserere (Psalm 51) and other double-choir pieces by Victoria alongside more closely argued pieces by English composers. From the suave Gibbons, to the energetic Weelkes and the everinspired William Byrd the music reflects the wide-range of emotions found in the texts.

Gothic Voices Mary, Star of the Sea A celebration of the biblical matriarch Mary in her various guises – caring mother, virgin lover, guiding light. Ancient ritualistic texts explore her mythical and human aspects and are set to music by masters of mediaeval England. Contemporary settings by Joanne Metcalf (1958), Andrew Smith (1970) and Arvo Pärt (1935) relate the themes to the modern day.

Orfeó Català Song of the Stars Formed in 1891, Orfeó Català is one of Spain’s most historic choirs. Brought together with the express purpose of introducing choral masterpieces (the St Matthew Passion, the Missa Solemnis, the Mass in B minor) into the country, Orfeó Català was also the driving force behind the construction of the Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall and is still a symbol of huge influence in Catalan culture. The centrepiece of this Catalan programme is the Cant de les Estrelles (Song of the Stars), a work by Enric Granados which had been lost for decades and was recently re-discovered. Crowning the performance is a selection of works by Pau Casals, Toldrà, Montsalvatge and others, illustrating the remarkable legacy of this territory.

The Tallis Scholars Tintinnabuli 2015 sees not only the 80th birthday of the distinguished Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, but also the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Tudor composer, John Sheppard. To link them in a concert programme may seem capricious, but in fact they are aesthetically quite closely linked, in mood if not exactly in style. In fact Pärt’s deeply contemplative language is beautifully reflected in a number of the surrounding renaissance works – Tallis’s Sancte deus, Mouton’s Nesciens mater and Allegri’s Miserere being excellent examples.

Getting to Cadogan Hall The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional tube connections.
