Journalist Rob McGibbon will be in conversation with a variety of celebrities, including BBC presenter John Humphreys, actress Felicity Kendal and newspaper editor Kelvin MacKenzie and Stephen Fry returns to Cadogan Hall in June in a debate about the Parthenon Marbles. July sees the return of the Cadogan Swing Orchestra with multiaward winning jazz singer Clare Teal, as well as the beginning of the Proms with artists including violinist Nicola Benedetti and pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.

Opening the festival music.se is the vibrant Orchestra of the Swan with soloist Hugo Ticciati. Rising Stars is a series of three concerts showcasing some of the very best RCM soloists and chamber groups. Be the first to hear these talented and award-winning young musicians. Programme includes: Mouton Nesciens mater, Salva nos Cornysh Ave Maria, Ah Robin, Magnificat Browne Salve regina Fayrfax Agnus dei In 1520, in fields near Calais, there took place one of the most spectacular political summit meetings of all time. Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France met to seal a treaty of friendship between their two warring countries, with no expense spared. The two Chapels Royal were in attendance, and of course they tried to out-sing each other. They were led by two exceptional composers of the period, composers to whom The Tallis Scholars have devoted individual recordings: Jean Mouton on the French side, and William Cornysh on the English. The Tallis Scholars cannot by themselves recreate the seething atmosphere of the original meeting but we can give an idea of the splendour of the occasion.

Nigel Short conductor Grace Davidson soprano Following the success of the charttopping album A Tender Light, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Paul Mealor come together once again with the Tenebrae Choir for an evening of sublime choral and orchestral music. Paul Mealor gained recognition when his motet Libi Caritas was performed at last year’s Royal Wedding. Mealor also composed Whenever You Are, sung by the Military Wives and crowned Christmas No.1 2011. Recently acclaimed on national radio as Britain’s favourite living composer, this concert presents a unique opportunity to experience Mealor’s music first-hand.

Principal Conductor Christopher Warren-Green is joined by long-standing friend, Julian Lloyd-Webber, whose joint passion for English music is represented in the programme, featuring Delius, Vaughan Williams and Elgar. This is entirely appropriate for marking, as this concert does, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
A special sport-themed Crash Bang Wallop! introducing young listeners to the brass section of the Orchestra. You’ll meet the noisiest members of City of London Sinfonia, as we celebrate the Olympic year through the iconic film music from Chariots of Fire, Fisher Tull’s Olympic Fanfare and Aesop’s wellknown fable The Tortoise and the Hare set to music. Enjoy one of Mozart’s earliest mature masterpieces – the Sinfonia Concertante – set against his greatest orchestral achievement, his Symphony No.41, the ‘Jupiter’. Mario Venzago conductor Kit Armstrong piano The Konzerthausorchester Berlin has been delighting audiences for more than 50 years and we are delighted to welcome them back to close the 2011/12 Zurich season. The soloist for the evening is 18-year-old pianist Kit Armstrong, who, since making his concerto debut at the age of eight, has given recitals and performances around the world to great critical acclaim. He joins the orchestra to play Schumann’s romantic Piano Concerto, written by the composer for his pianist wife Clara. The programme concludes with Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony, a heady musical mix of revolutionary fervour and introspective angst.

Steven Mackey electric guitar Anthony Marwood director/violin The Academy is joined by acclaimed violinist Anthony Marwood for an exploration of iconoclastic works. The evening’s programme features the London premiere of Steven Mackey’s Four Iconoclastic Episodes, a work scored for solo violin, electric guitar and strings. We welcome Steven Mackey as soloist alongside Anthony Marwood. In the context of great works by Shostakovich and Beethoven, the concert explores some of the most original thinkers of the 19th and 20th centuries.

A fusion vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Nikpay’s electrifying voice has mesmerized audiences throughout North America, Asia and Europe. His music, richly layered with soulful melodies, combines his Persian musical traditions with the Latin rhythms of Flamenco and the fluid beats of jazz. Accompanying him is a world class ensemble of artists with eclectic musical backgrounds creating sounds that blend musical elements from east and west; they are Farhadi on soprano sax, Ellis on percussion, Narezo on flamenco guitar and Clerks on bass. Stephen Fry takes up the cause of the Parthenon Marbles in this Intelligence Squared debate. Send them back to Greece, he’ll argue, as a gesture of solidarity with its people and as a mark of respect for the birthplace of democracy and rational thought. But it’s the British Museum, to which Lord Elgin presented these treasures almost 200 years ago, which has protected them and given them their global significance.

Intended as a companion piece for the Requiem, Sea and Stars, from composer Julian Philips with text by Simon Christmas, was commissioned by Ealing Choral Society to mark their 50th Anniversary. A traveller seeking the meaning of his own life on earth visits the fiery ‘hell’ around an undersea vent, where life began, and the starry spheres of ‘heaven’ which, perfect and unchanging as they may be, are therefore lifeless. He learns that meaning lies neither in the origin nor the destination, but in the journey from one to the other.
This year’s concert is held in honour of BMG Foundation’s Our Water, Our Life initiative and to raise awareness of the shortage of drinking water in developing countries. Amwaj – Water Symphony is a specially commissioned symphony composed by the conductor.

James Morrison trumpet London Brass James Morrison, the phenomenal jazz trumpeter, joins London Brass in a programme designed to show off the virtuosic skills of each player and the versatility of brass instruments. The players in London Brass are the best in their field including principal positions in Philharmonia, Hallé and Royal Opera House Orchestras and have, between them, recorded countless film soundtracks and toured with the likes of Paul McCartney, Tom Jones and many others.
For one night only, Cadogan Hall is transformed with a screening of the 1922 film accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing John Scott’s colourful score. The story of Robin Hood has fascinated and inspired generations of artists. Legend of the silent film Douglas Fairbanks was no exception, his classic 1922 film featuring a most impressive display of pageantry in which the hero defeats Sir Guy of Gisbourne to win the heart of Maid Marian. In the composer’s own words, ‘The film calls for an action packed score. There is romance, intrigue, terror, spectacle, suspense, and as the story progresses it demands more and more, culminating in the spectacle of a Royal wedding.’

L’Arpeggiata Christina Pluhar theorbo/director The tarantella, the entrancing dance form found in several Mediterranean countries, is the unifying thread here. L’Arpeggiata’s programme recalls the popular myth that the bite of the tarantula could only be cured by music and dancing, a remedy known since the Middle Ages as ‘tarantismo’. The associated songs and improvisations – tailored to match the varied symptoms of torpor, excitability and restlessness afflicting victims of the spider’s poison – are revived in a virtuosic performance that transcends generic boundaries. The innovative period-instrument ensemble is joined by dancer Anna Dego.

Joining forces to honour the 150th anniversary of Debussy’s birth we have three leading young soloists: two are current BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, and Jennifer Pike, BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2002, is a former member too. The Debussy pieces come from late in his career, when he embarked on a set of six sonatas for various instrumental combinations. He completed just three – of which the Sonata for flute, viola and harp can be heard later in the series (Proms Chamber Music 7). Ravel’s elegant Piano Trio gained a new following after featuring in the heart-rending 1992 film Un coeur en hiver.

One of Britain’s most popular young violinists returns for the second of three appearances this season, performing mostly in the company of her regular chamber music partners. The programme begins with the many-voiced solo of Bach’s Chaconne and concludes with Brahms’s most dramatic and tightly argued piano trio, No. 3 in C minor, composed in 1886 while on a productive summer holiday in Switzerland. The violinist is joined by Kiev-born pianist Alexei Grynyuk and German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich.

Debussy’s early quartet already reaches into the future with its sensual colour and improvisatory tone. The fourth of Hugh Wood’s five works in the form is a masterly four-movement piece: music of passion and closely wrought integrity, it was recently selected for Encore – a scheme run by the Royal Philharmonic Society and BBC Radio 3 designed to give repeat performances and broadcasts of works by living British composers. Made up of talented doctor-musicians from the UK and abroad, the orchestra is joined by the internationally renowned pianist Ronan Magill in a performance of Beethoven’s monumental Emperor Concerto. The Royal Medical Benevolent Fund is the leading UK charity for doctors, medical students and the families of both. We provide financial support, money advice and information to the medical profession in times of illness, accident, bereavement or other crisis.

The Violin Concerto by Sibelius is among his best-loved works, combining passionate lyricism with dazzling display. The Concerto finds an exciting exponent in violinist Jack Liebeck, winner of the 2010 Classical BRIT Award for ‘Young British Performer of the Year’. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony is one of his most powerful works, charting an intense struggle against the caprices of Fate, culminating in an electrifying finale in which the battle seems to have been won.

Vienna Boys Choir Kerem Sezen conductor For their return to the UK, the Vienna Boys Choir have devised a very Viennese programme, with music from composers closely linked to the choir’s history, contemporary composers, and its own arrangements of music by the Strauss family. Nothing reflects the Viennese mind and spirit quite like polkas and waltzes by Strauss.

Jane Birkin sings Serge Gainsbourg Via Japan Jane Birkin makes a rare London appearance singing the songs of her late partner Serge Gainsbourg. Jane was Serge’s muse and this special concert is a reinterpretation of his repertoire performed by Jane with a group of very special musicians, with whom she first performed in Japan soon after the earthquake.

Accessibility Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Companions of disabled customers are entitled to a free seat when assisting disabled customers at Cadogan Hall. The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections.

If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

Where general concessions are available this is defined as under-16s, full time students, senior citizens and persons out of work. Tickets are subject to availability and at the discretion of Cadogan Hall. A limited number of £10 student tickets are available for many of our concerts. Please note that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded. Only one discount is available per booking. Children under five will not be admitted to Cadogan Hall except for family shows, where children over the age of one must have their own seats. We reserve the right to remove children from the auditorium if they are not well behaved. Price band structure reflects the level of comfort and clarity of view.
