Ravel P ict u res at an E x hibition Yuri Simonov cond u ctor Nikita Boriso-Glebsky violin Formed from Moscow’s finest orchestral musicians, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the great Russian orchestras of today. Regular visitors to the world’s leading concert venues, the orchestra presents a richly colourful programme under the baton of its chief conductor, Yuri Simonov. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D minor is one of the best known, but among the most technically difficult works for violin. Written in just 11 days, in 1878, the work has become well known for its rich melodies and expressive nature. It is performed by the young Russian violinist, Nikita Boriso-Glebski, winner of the 2010 International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition and International Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition.

Schubert S ymphony N o . 8 U n f i n i s h e d Mozart V iolin C oncerto N o . 5 Dvořák S ymphony N o . 8 Libor Pešek cond u ctor Nicola Benedetti violin The Czech National Symphony Orchestra, an integral part of cultural life in Prague, returns to Cadogan Hall with its Czech conductor, Libor Pešek. The orchestra is joined by violinist Nicola Benedetti to perform Mozart’s exuberant Violin Concerto. A recent winner of the Classical BRIT Award for Young British Classical Performer, Nicola has captivated audiences and critics alike with her musicality and poise. The evening opens with Schubert’s dramatic ‘Unfinished’ Symphony, and ends with Dvořák’s bright Symphony No.8.

Moniuszko O vert u re from the opera P a r i a Panufnik S i n f o n i a Ru s t i c a Bruch V iolin C oncerto Beethoven S ymphony N o . 5 Antoni Wit cond u ctor Kuba Jakowicz violin Antoni Wit, Artistic Director of the Warsaw Philharmonic, is one of the most highly regarded Polish conductors and an enthusiastic champion of Polish music. The concert opens with music from two revered Polish composers: Moniuszko, generally accepted as the father of Polish national opera, whose work is filled with patriotic folk themes and Panufnik, who was instrumental in the re-establishment of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra after the Second World War. Warsaw-born violinist, Kuba Jakowicz, performs Bruch’s richly melodious Violin Concerto, written when the composer was just 30 years old.

The orchestra has interpreted and performed Sibelius’ works on record and in concert throughout the USA, Europe and, of course, at its home in the Sibelius Hall, Finland. Violinist Elina Vähälä, one of today’s most sought-after Finnish instrumentalists, joins the orchestra under the baton of principal conductor Okko Kamu, to play Sibelius’ hauntingly lyrical Violin Concerto. ‘Elina Vähälä’s playing was blinding, answering all the demands of the music in power, virtuosity and soft melancholy. We are delighted to welcome them to Cadogan Hall, where they perform some of the best-loved music written by Russia’s most popular composers. Conductor Valery Poliansky is joined by his daughter Tatyana in Rachmaninov’s richly romantic Second Piano Concerto, one of the composer’s enduringly popular pieces. The evening opens with Tchaikovsky’s sparkling Polonaise from Eugene Onegin, and closes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful and exotic symphonic suite, based on Arabian Nights.

Their three-concert mini residency at Cadogan Hall in 2009 was a great success and we are delighted to welcome them back to close the 2011/12 Zurich season. The soloist for the evening is 18-year-old pianist Kit Armstrong, who, since making his concerto debut at the age of eight, has given recitals and concerto performances around the world to great critical acclaim. He joins the orchestra to play Schumann’s romantic Piano Concerto, written by the composer for his pianist wife Clara. The programme concludes with Beethoven’s mighty Eroica Symphony, a heady musical mix of revolutionary fervour and introspective angst.

Located two minutes’ walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections.
