Awarding the orchestra the name of this great Russian composer was in recognition of its role in promoting much of the music written by Tchaikovsky and for nearly 40 years the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra has been headed by Vladimir Fedoseyev. Tonight we hear Souvenir de Florence, which, despite being composed during a visit to Florence, contains distinctly Russian and folk-like melodies and rhythms, and Shostakovich’s dramatic Symphony No. 10, the first significant orchestral work to emerge in the Soviet Union after Stalin’s demise. The award-winning young Russian pianist Andrei Korobeinikov plays Rachmaninov’s captivating Paganini Rhapsody.

Regarded as one of the most artistically exciting and successful ensembles on the international classical music scene and including some of the finest musicians from over 20 European countries, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra (MCO) was established 15 years ago by luminary conductor Claudio Abbado. By 2008 the French newspaper Le Monde was calling the MCO ‘the best orchestra in the world’. Whatever they play, they play with a ‘chamber’ philosophy: intimate interplay between musicians, intensity and attentiveness. Every concert is an adventure. For this concert the orchestra is directed from the keyboard by Leif Ove Andsnes, an internationally acclaimed piano star, named ‘the most accomplished pianist of the new generation’ by the New York Times.

In the second half the Czech National performs its authentic interpretation of Dvořák's most famous symphony, which he wrote in New York while feeling homesick for his beloved country. Since then the New World Symphony has become one of the classical repertoire's most iconic works.

Brussels Philharmonic
Michel Tabachnik c o n d u c t o r Established in 1935, Brussels Philharmonic has worked with many leading conductors and soloists, and, in the course of its existence, has performed premieres by eminent composers including Messiaen and Stravinsky. It has taken on roles in the world of film too, including the musical soundtrack to the otherwise silent, multi award-winning film The Artist. Its Musical Director, Michel Tabachnik, has developed successful programmes for the orchestra combining traditional repertoire and music of our time: ‘We are not a museum, but a platform for living music. We try all horizons to find new ways of making music, new ways of performing music.’

Barry Douglas’ career was launched in 1986 when he won the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition held in Moscow, the first non-Russian to do so in nearly 30 years. He plays Rachmaninov’s First Piano Concerto, an extraordinarily accomplished work, written while the composer was still a teenager. Kodály’s childhood, in the small town of Galánta in particular, was steeped in the folk music of his native Hungary, and as a mature composer and scholar of Hungarian music was still as entranced by these tunes to compose his exquisite Dances of Galánta 50 years later. After the interval the orchestra performs one of Beethoven’s most popular symphonies, his Sixth. Known as the Pastoral, it reflects Beethoven’s love of nature and is one of his very few programmatic works. The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra has the Viennese tradition running in its very blood and this performance will undoubtedly be unmissable.

Sir Roger Norrington has changed the very way we hear the music of the classical period and as he enters his ninth decade, his performances are as revelatory as ever. He celebrates his 80th birthday this year by taking his Zurich Chamber Orchestra on a European tour, conducting Mozart’s first and last symphonies. The orchestra is joined by the award-winning American pianist Jonathan Biss, appearing for the first time at Cadogan Hall to perform Mozart’s most melodic and eloquent piano concerto, whose famous, sublime slow movement was used in the film Elvira Madigan.

Basel Symphony Orchestra Dennis Russell Davies c o n d u c t o r
One of Switzerland’s leading orchestras, the Basel Symphony Orchestra has a broad repertoire ranging effortlessly from the Viennese classics to contemporary music. Whether in the concert hall or the opera house, this internationally varied group of musicians constantly demonstrates its unique flexibility and artistic prowess. The orchestra performs a set of three concerts presenting visually inspired music with its roots in minimalism: from the intense and elegiac music of Philip Glass’ Cello Concerto No. 2 distilled from his soundtrack to the film Naqoyqatsi, to the exhilarating ‘tidal wave of brass and percussion’ in John Adams’ spectacular Harmonielehre, inspired by a vivid dream he had and which ended his 18-month writer’s block. The mysterious sound world of Arvo Pärt’s Lamentate, a homage to sculptor Anish Kapoor, and These Words, for strings and percussion, contrast with music from one of Michael Nyman’s best film scores, for Peter Greenaway’s Prospero’s Books, and his thrilling Trombone Concerto which dramatically pits soloist against sections of the orchestra.

The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra was established after the Second World War by the Russian government and continues to amaze audiences with its performances with highly acclaimed conductors and soloists. This evening they are joined by world-famous cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, performing Shostakovich’s demanding First Cello Concerto – a highly virtuosic piece with an astonishing cello cadenza that stands as a movement in itself. The programme includes two of Tchaikovsky’s most bold and intensely felt works, both full of drama and anguish and often performed together. The huge sound of a Russian orchestra playing Russian works that are in its blood promises an exhilarating evening.

Based in Paris it is composed of musicians from well-established European orchestras and ensembles. Tonight’s concert explores the works of Berlioz, a profoundly original composer and brilliant writer. The composer’s beautiful and atmospheric song cycle Les nuits d’été is performed by the critically acclaimed Canadian mezzo-soprano Michèle Losier. Symphonie fantastique was premiered in 1830, during Berlioz’s period of intense infatuation with a young actress. Through its movements it tells the story of an artist’s self-destructive passion for a beautiful woman, describing his obsession and dreams, tantrums and moments of tenderness, and visions of suicide, murder, ecstasy and despair.
