Cadogan Hall presents the tenth Zurich International Orchestra Series with sixteen concerts performed by eleven international orchestras and an array of renowned conductors and critically-acclaimed soloists.

Over the past decade the series has presented nearly one hundred concerts from over forty orchestras. This series welcomes back nine of those orchestras including the Mariinsky Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Tonk端nstler, Dresden Philharmonic and Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Spanish Symphony Orchestra and Norwegian Chamber Orchestra make series debuts.

Throughout 2016 Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre are celebrating the 125th anniversary of Prokofiev’s birth with possibly the greatest concentration of performances of his works ever presented. As part of this celebration and following on from their concert performance of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet in April, Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra return to Cadogan Hall to present this complete cycle of Prokofiev symphonies.

In the first two concerts they are joined by Hungarian violinist Kristóf Baráti for both of Prokofiev’s glorious Violin Concertos.

The seven symphonies span Prokofiev’s entire career from the youthful and sparkling ‘Classical’ Symphony through to the lyrical and enigmatic Seventh Symphony, completed the year before his death. ’Valery Gergiev is a born Prokofiev interpreter’ Guardian ‘For those who like to hear the violin played at its sweet and acrobatic best, then Baráti is out of the top drawer...’

The evening’s performance begins with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral), originally dubbed ‘recollections of life in the country’, depicted by its buoyant melody and birdcalls.

Brussels Philharmonic’s programme tonight gives focus to French composer Guillaume Connesson, recognised as one of the youngest and most gifted contemporary composers of today and a firm favourite of Stéphane Denève, who has remarked on his ‘amazing orchestration… the quality of writing for large orchestra on the level of a Ravel or Stravinsky!’

Connesson’s short and sharp Flammenschrift (Letter of fire), written by Connesson with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in mind, is furious, lively and full of colour.

To end the evening, the orchestra plays Respighi’s four movement tone poem Pines of Rome, a dazzling and glittering display of orchestral colour.

It has been directed by renowned conductors including Roberto Abbado, Michail Jurowski, Jean-Jacques Kantorow and János Kovács and has performed with soloists including Nicola Benedetti, Renaud Capuçon, Maxim Rysanov and Konstantin Lifschitz. This evening the orchestra is conducted by their current Music Director and Principal Conductor Grzegorz Nowak, Permanent Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Australian born guitarist Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation and one of the UK’s most recorded and acclaimed guitarists. He was the youngest instrumentalist to have received a Fellowship Award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where he is currently Head of Guitar.

Pavel Kolesnikov, at the tender age of 27, has quickly become a critics’ favourite. Following his Wigmore Hall debut in 2014, the Telegraph gave his recital a rare five-star review and called it ‘one of the most memorable of such occasions London has witnessed in a while’. He joins the orchestra to perform Tchaikovsky’s deeply romantic and soulful Piano Concerto No. 1.

The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s passionate final symphony, which he reportedly considered to be his best and most sincere work.

Celebrating its 23rd birthday in 2016, the CNSO is one of the most popular orchestras in the world, touring extensively and attracting top international conductors and soloists. Pragueborn conductor Libor Pešek has been its Chief Conductor since 2007 and he opens the concert with a symphonic poem from Smetana’s patriotic Má Vlast, perfectly depicting the natural beauty of the Czech countryside.

Esteemed British cellist Natalie Clein joins the orchestra to perform Dvorˇák’s Cello Concerto – a work beloved by audiences and performers alike, it remains one of the most popular concertos in the cello repertory.

This season the orchestra brings with it two extraordinarily talented soloists.

It is joined by Alison Balsom, whose accolades include the 2013 Gramophone Artist of the Year and three-time winner at both the Classic BRITS and the Echo Klassik Awards. It is these achievements that have gained her an international reputation and her position as one of the world’s greatest trumpeters. She performs one of the most popular, and technically demanding, trumpet concertos.

After the interval, the award-winning pianist Gabriela Montero performs Mozart’s sublime and melodic Piano Concerto No. 14 and joins Alison for Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano and Trumpet. Gabriela’s visionary interpretations and unique improvisational gifts have won her a devoted following around the world.

The orchestra’s recently appointed Chief Conductor is Edward Gardner, acclaimed for his work with English National Opera, who showcases his superb musicians here in a colourful and compelling programme.

One of the outstanding cellists of today, Norwegian Truls Mørk, is the soloist for Elgar’s deeply-felt Cello Concerto.

Conductor Michael Sanderling has headed Dresden’s venerable 145 year old Philharmonic since 2011 and has a unique rapport with the orchestra. They return to Cadogan Hall to perform Beethoven’s first and last completed symphonies.

It seems fitting that Beethoven composed his First Symphony at the dawn of a new century, 1799-1800, for even contemporaries realized that his symphonies changed the conception of the genre. Beethoven’s First Symphony came at age 29. It appeared late in what scholars define as the first period of Beethoven’s career, just a year or two before the crisis brought about by his gradual loss of hearing.

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was completed in 1824, when he was almost completely deaf and it is almost universally considered one of Beethoven’s greatest works, and many consider it one of the greatest compositions in the western musical canon.

For its second visit to Cadogan Hall this season Brussels Philharmonic brings with it award-winning French cellist Jérôme Pernoo and they continue with their aim of introducing audiences to the present century’s best symphonic compositions.

Connesson’s Maslenitsa is inspired by the Russian Sun Festival, a lively start to the concert, celebrating the arrival of spring.

The Russian theme continues with Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante, the solo cello part of which calls for a player of exceptional technique and musicality, premiered in 1952 by Mstislav Rostropovich.

The final piece in the evening’s concert is Rachmaninov‘s final composition. It was, he said, his ‘final flicker’ and today many regard it as his finest music. Originally titled Fantastic Dances in three parts: Noon, Twilight and Midnight, Symphonic Dances is made up of three movements all in dance style. In fact, Rachmaninov had intended for them to be choreographed.

Cadogan Hall’s tenth Zurich International Orchestra Season closes with one of the finest orchestras in the world. The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1951, by Bolshoi Opera conductor Samuel Samosud and has since been conducted by some of the most respected artists and composers of the day including its Chief Conductor since 1998, Yuri Simonov.

Exceptionally gifted with an unusually broad repertoire, pianist Freddy Kempf has built a unique reputation as an explosive and physical performer not afraid to take risks, as well as a serious, sensitive and profoundly musical artist. He plays Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2, acknowledged as one of the greatest and most popular pieces in the piano repertoire for its glorious melodies, extensive lyricism and divine harmonies.

Getting to Cadogan Hall The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Located two minutes’ walk from Sloane Square tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional tube connections.

SLOANE SQUARE UNDERGROUND TWO MINUTES’ WALK Upon exiting Sloane Square Station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. (You will see Cadogan Hall’s tower immediately before you). Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street to the Hall.

BUS Sloane Street one minute’s walk| Frequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street. Bus services include numbers 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 319, 360 and C1.

TAXI RANK Sloane Square one minute’s walk Taxis are numerous in the area and there is a taxi rank located on Sloane Square opposite the underground station.
