Norman Gray AM CEO, Centre for Adult Education & Box Hill Institute
Our government is committed to ensuring that Victoria’s education system is the best in the country. High quality training and retraining is more important than ever before to Victoria’s future job growth. We are committed to providing genuinely accessible, high-quality education and training opportunities to all school leavers and adults across Victoria. Creating training opportunities for people to develop vocational skills, particularly within high-growth industries of the future, is critical to the growth of our economy. Our Back to Work Plan includes a commitment to create 100,000 jobs over the next four years. The adult education sector plays an important role in supporting workers access training so they can take advantage of new job opportunities. One of the ways we’re making Victoria the Education State is by strengthening our Learn Local adult education sector. Learn Local organisations provide accessible training opportunities to people within their local communtities. They specialise in reaching out and engaging people who are facing barriers to education and training, providing education opportunities for some of our most vulnerable citizens and offering them a stepping stone to new education and job opportunities. Lean Local organisations give people the skills they need for employment, and pathways to further education. These organisations are also social hubs for the community, providing life skills which complement a learner’s formal training and extra support for the most disadvantaged in our community. As one of the 300 plus Learn Local adult education providers in Victoria, the CAE offers the welcoming environment many people need to build confidence, improve their literacy and numeracy and reskill. CAE has a vital role in further education and ensuring people from all walks of life and all age groups have opportunities to learn and succeed. As one of the state’s largest adult education providers, CAE’s services to the people of Melbourne – both in the CBD and in other locations – are contributing to the strength of the Learn Local sector and are a significant element of Victoria’s workforce development. CAE provides its diverse range of courses year-round. I encourage you to take a minute to see if there is a course available that will help you develop new skills and take up new opportunities.

(Quelle surprise!). Discover the language of le Tour to enhance your appreciation of tour coverage on SBS and online at the ‘site officiel’ www.letour.fr. France is the country of food and wine; Paris is the City of Light; French cinema is too French to travel; French women are slim; The French are pretentious and arrogant; The French are always on strike etc, etc ...Vrai ou faux? Cold Cases: Jo Nesbo, Ian Rankin & Friends Scandinavian crime writing is notable for cutting away what are considered myths about a happy, egalitarian and welcoming society. Does this, and the interest in re-examining major historical events, provide Scandinavian crime writers such as Jo Nesbo with a special insight into current social problems? And does the seemingly less controversial past of Scotland limit the questions a Scottish writer might ask about his/her society? Or are Ian Rankin’s Edinburgh-based novels a means by which to provide social commentary from a different perspective? Dr Pauline Moore explores the questions and seeks the answers.

The Golden Trade of the Moors
Karen Manwaring, author of A Slow Walk Across Spain: Walking the Camino de Santiago, delivers a fascinating talk on the famous Camino’s history and its links to the Spanish Reconquista. The Camino’s history spans 1,000 years and has been influenced by Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Celtic, Basque, Roman, Goth and Berber cultures. At the height of its influence in medieval times, the Camino joined Jerusalem and Rome as one of the three great Christian pilgrimages.
Ed Weiss explores the fascinating history of the great trans-Saharan trade between the cities of the North African coast with their access to the entire Mediterranean, and the African states in the south, which produced gold, precious stones and animal skins. A trade which existed for centuries before Europeans with their sailing ships replaced caravans of camels and horses winding their way across the desert sands from oasis to oasis.
