HOME & GARDEN BE GREEN AND THE ENVY Kermit the Frog once said “it’s not easy being green” but as you browse this guide, you’ll see that we make it a breeze. You can start by making your environment green with our new Vertical Gardens course, and pair it with the popular Gardening for Small Spaces to really reach new heights. Once you’ve harvested a bumper crop, you can complete the cycle with our new Composting & Worm Farms course. Coupled with some of our cooking courses (page 12), you’ll be the envy of the neighbourhood! Alternatively, if you are already quite confident with your green thumb or green habits, then why not change colour? We have several décor and design courses to help you, including Interior Design: Working with Colour, and in our Craft section on (page 15), learn how to turn old t-shirts into rugs. It’s easy being green with CAE.
GARDEN Gardening for Small Spaces Small space gardens are a difficult and specialist area to design. Get it right and it will enhance the attractiveness and value of your home or unit and make for ease of maintenance. Get it wrong and you will be forever trying to fix it at great cost in time and money. Kathy Smalley has been designing small space gardens for over 16 years and shares her ideas and observations of what works best – covering plant selection, use of materials, colour, proportion and other elements of small space gardens.

You can control unwanted insects in your garden using two approaches: plants that either repel or confuse insects with a strong scent. • cotton lavender or santolina, tansy or wormwood (wormwood is especially good to fight off the white cabbage moth)
• Capsicum, chilli, cucumber, pumpkin and squash • Cornflower, echinacea, foxglove, geranium, marigold, roses and sunflowers.

Terry Murphy – Photographer and Collaborative Artist
TUTOR PROFILE
COURSE: Photography and Photography Walking Tours
Connect with us Covers similar course content as course above. Intensive format (fewer, but longer sessions).
Photography
With a background in the theatre and a variety of visual arts, Terry encourages his students to explore the fringe arts and subcultures such as burlesque and circus performance. He believes these areas offer more exciting, dynamic and challenging photographic opportunities because it’s not just a matter of point-and-click. A good photographer needs to take the time to understand and appreciate the art forms to fully understand how best to shoot them. Needless to say, Terry enjoys an environment where the photographer and the subject can work together collaboratively. Knowing this approach is new to a lot of people, Terry enjoys helping his students to see things in a different way and discover their personal creativity and style. For this reason he loves teaching at the CAE. Each student has something special to offer and it’s a joy uncovering that, especially when they come with an openness to learn and explore. Travel Talk
Why bother learning some of the language before you visit a country? You’ll probably be able to get by in English, right?
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” – Nelson Mandela
In many countries you probably will be able to find your way around using just English. But taking a short course in the language and culture of the countries you’re visiting can open doors to new conversations and experiences that wouldn’t otherwise have been available to you. Aside from the practical advantages of understanding signs, announcements and menus, you’re much more likely to strike up friendships with people you meet if you can engage with them – in their language. Here are some friendly ways to greet someone you’re introduced to for the first time in Danish, Greek, Indonesian, Croatian, Spanish, Japanese, Hindi and Mandarin.

PUBLISHING Q&A FROM ROBERT SKINNER, EDITOR OF THE CANARY PRESS What do you look for in a story? We publish a very eclectic bunch. There are trends though: we especially love stories that tackle big and serious themes, on the high seas for instance, or that explore grief and loss with a busload of 26 disappearing monkeys. How does a writer make a good first impression? We receive hundreds of submissions every issue, amidst a maelstrom of invoices and eviction notices. Most of the submissions are overwhelmingly competent, but they fail in some elemental way of sending sparks across that chasm between the writer and the reader. Make us believe in the magic of words again. (No small ask, we know!) What is a common mistake made by writers? We see a lot of unnecessarily solemn writing, as though people are trying to create “serious” literature just by taking out the jokes. Humour can be a wonderfully generous and underrated thing. We love funny. For a country that prides itself on its sense of humour, there’s not enough of it in our fiction. What should I do if I get rejected? Send it somewhere else! Sometimes we have to reject very good pieces for reasons of space, or tonal balance. It may well find a good home somewhere else. And do send us something again. We have published stories by writers we previously rejected a bunch of times. Either way, don’t despair. Keep reading and keep writing. What do we know? Follow us on facebook.com/CAEMelbourne for more upcoming publishing tips from Robert Skinner and The Canary Press.

1688: The Age of Reason and Revolution
