Embracing Change Makes Family Medicine Stronger The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines career as “a ƉƌŽĨĞƐƐŝŽŶ ĨŽƌ ǁŚŝĐŚ ŽŶĞ ƚƌĂŝŶƐ ĂŶĚ ǁŚŝĐŚ ŝƐ ƵŶĚĞƌƚĂŬĞŶ as a permanent calling.” Something in that definition feels overly constraining and perhaps not an accurate reflection of ǁŚĂƚ ŵĂŶLJ ĨĂŵŝůLJ ƉŚLJƐŝĐŝĂŶ ĐĂƌĞĞƌƐ ĂƌĞ͘ dŚĂƚ ĚĞĨŝŶŝƚŝŽŶ ŚĂƐ Ă connotation of stasis. Family medicine is anything but static. Family medicine is dynamic.

Hep C Treatment as Primary Care: Alameda Health Consortium Experience Dr. Jan Diamond, MD, MPH, is a family physician who has experienced many transitions throughout her career. Dr. Diamond practiced for 26 years at Contra Costa Health Services, where she continuously adapted her practice and skills to meet the needs of the community, including training the system’s family medicine residents, providing HIV care in a pre-HAART era, specializing in geriatric medicine, attending on the inpatient services, and becoming one of the county’s expert hepatologists. Dr. Diamond retired from Contra Costa Health Services in 2013. Even though the breadth of her career had been expansive, after retirement from Contra Costa Health Services, when Dr. Diamond saw an opportunity in 2015 to better meet the needs of the community, she again took a leadership role in an innovative program that demonstrated the centrality of primary care in the health of communities. We’ve found, on the contrary, that treating a patient’s HCV can be rewarding for both the patient and the physician and care team.

We did a survey on the efficacy and satisfaction of the W WƐ ǁĞ ƚƌĂŝŶĞĚ ƚŽ ƚƌĞĂƚ , s͗ ϴϱ ƉĞƌĐĞŶƚ ƐƚĂƚĞĚ ƚŚĂƚ Ă ǀŝƐŝƚ ĨŽƌ , s ƚƌĞĂƚŵĞŶƚ ǁĂƐ ŵŽƌĞ ƐĂƚŝƐĨLJŝŶŐ͕ ĂŶĚ ŶŽ ŵŽƌĞ time consuming than a routine primary care visit. The ŵĂũŽƌŝƚLJ ƐĂŝĚ ƚŚĂƚ ŐĞŶĞƌĂů ƉƌŝŵĂƌLJ ĐĂƌĞ ǀŝƐŝƚƐ ǁĞƌĞ ŵŽƌĞ frustrating than visits for HCV. If I’ve learned anything in my short tenure as an attending, it’s the fact that we are constantly navigating transitions in life, but especially on the family medicine journey, a journey that can take you on many paths. The only certainty is indeed the uncertainty of what we may be faced with on any given day in clinical care.

That first job out of training is the learning curve of a lifetime – because the learning doesn’t stop and oftentimes
